LENOX:

A few minutes later I see them bringing Mrs. Black into surgery. After I do my pre surgery scrub and get ready, I walk over to her to talk with her one last time before surgery.

"How are the nerves?" I ask.

"Not so good but Dr. Gerandy says you are the best so I trust you. Just don't let my baby die please. I can't handle the loss of another baby. Just promise me you will do everything you can?" she says with tears threating to fall down her check.

"I promise I am going to do my best to keep that baby in there longer but I can not guarantee that will happen. If something goes wrong I will deliver your baby and if that happens I will be staying here to take care of your baby. Y'all are both in good hands." She nods at that and I can tell that helped her a little bit.

"Okay we are going to get started now. I will see you after surgery. Remember to breathe, I got y'all." I nod to the anesthesiologist to start putting her under. Once she is under I address my team.

"Okay team we are going to take this slow. We are going to make sure no mistakes happen at all." Everyone nods at me

I station two nurses to watch not only her BP monitor but also the baby's. There only job during surgery is to monitor them to let me know at the first sign of the BP dropping. After about 20 minute's I start the surgery. I start by making my incisions on her stomach to be able to get the instruments positioned correctly. My plain is to do this with barely any cuts. This has gone well in the past but every mom is different. Everything goes along smoothly at first.

"Okay I am about to cut the tumor away. Watch those monitors like a hawk and team be ready." As I am saying that I cut the tumor away from the uterus. I hear Isabella's and the baby's BP monitor going off.

"Oh no you don't Isabella!" I say and then she flat lines. The stress from the baby and the rush of blood from cutting the tumor is causing her to flat line.

"You start chest compressions." I say to the nurse who was watching her BP.

"Lets get ready for a emergency c-section now! We have 5 minutes to get the baby out before something happens."

I see them getting everything setup. I grab the scalpel and make the incision. Two minutes later a little girl with jet black hair and light brown skin is born. She is not making a sound so I rush her over to the NICU bassinet. I grab my stethoscope to check her lungs and heart. Her heart rate is very faint and she is struggling to breathe. I immediately intubate her. After she is intubated she becomes stable.

"Get her up to the NICU and start her on antibiotics and steroid's!"

I rush over to Isabella and I see that Dr. Gerandy has already closed the incision. I nod my head at him to thank him. I notice Isabella's heart rate is back in normal range now.

"Y'all did wonderful. Thank you! Get her to the ICU and I want her monitored 24/7 for the next day at least. Also start her on antibiotics as well. I will be up in a minute."

I walk out the OR to scrub out. I head towards the NICU to make sure baby Black is okay. Before walking into the NICU I scrub my hands and put on a PPE gown.

"How is she doing?"

"She has stayed stable and has handled the steroids and antibiotics well so far. She weighs 1 pound exactly and is 7 inches long." Nurse Sarah says.

"Thank you! I'm going to let Jacob now." I say as I'm walking out the door. I make my way to the waiting room. I see him sitting with seven other men. He looks at the man next to him and the man nods at him. After that Jacob gets up and walks over to me.

"Jacob first and for most your family is stable." He let out a shaky breathe. "When I do surgery I make sure my mommas are adjusted to being put under before I began surgery. When I removed the tumor both of their BP's tanked and then Isabella flat lined on us. I preformed an emergency c-section and delivered your beautiful little girl. Her heart rate was very low so I intubated her. She is now stable and in the NICU. I have started her on antibiotics and steroid's. The steroids will help develop her lungs more. She will be in the NICU for a while. I'm not for sure how long but I will be her doctor until she is able to go home. She weighs 1 pound and is 7 inches long. While I was working on your baby, Dr. Gerandy was able to get Isabella closed up. After the baby was born and she was closed up, she became stable. She is in the ICU right now. We have started her on antibiotics to help prevent any kinds of infection. I expect she will be able to go home in a few days. I can take you up to see them both but I do wanna warn you that your daughter is hooked up to all kinds of machines right now. You can bring someone with you."

"Thank you so much for what you did and keeping them safe! I can never repay you for this. Seth you can come with me and guys would you all mind waiting here a little longer?"

"Yeah we can." They all said.

"Alright if your ready we can head up."

"Yeah I am. Come on Seth." He said. I looked to see which one is Seth but before I saw him my eyes landed on someone else instead. He had a hard look about him. He was the tallest one out of all the men. I would say he is about 6'6 and you could see his chiseled muscles through his tight white t shirt. While I was checking him out, I could feel a set of eyes on me. I let my eyes travel up his stomach and when my eyes meet his, I felt a weird feeling come over me. It felt like a million steal cables just linked me to him and I could feel his emotions. He was worried but also happy. I wanted to go over to him and ease the worry away. When I finally pulled my eyes away from him, I noticed the others staring at us with their mouths open. I cleared my throat and tried to get my train of thoughts back together.

"Sorry about that. If y'all will follow me." When I walked away from him I felt a whole open up inside of me and for some reason I know that it would disappear if I went back to that Greek god in the waiting room. Once we reached the NICU I have the guys scrub their hands and put on a PPE gown.

"She is right over here. You can reach in and touch her hand if you like. I know she looks tiny but she has the spirit of a fighter. While she is staying with us here you can come everyday to see her." I stepped back to give them space with her. Jacob had some unshed tears in his eyes as he looked at his little girl. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I reached in to grab it and I saw a message saying Isabella was beginning to wake up.

"Isabella is beginning to wake up. Would you like to head on up to see your wife?" They both nodded and followed me out.

"I'm going to go in first and check on her. Just wait right here." Before I turned away to walk in, I noticed they shared a look between them. When I got into her room she was beginning to open her eyes.

"Hey. How are you feeling?" I ask

"Sore but nothing unbearable. What happened?" she asked worryingly

"I'm glad you are okay. I'm going to get Jacob and Seth and then I will go over how surgery went." I stuck my head out in the hallway and told them they could come in. When Jacob entered the room he rushed over to her and gave her a quick but passionate kiss.

"While I'm going over your surgery I need you to remain calm. Can you do that for me?"

"Okay. I think can." She said

"First and for most you have a daughter and she is stable. Just remember that please. Now when I preform surgery I like to take my time and not rush it. I give my mom's time to adjust being put under. After I knew you was okay and comfortable I started. When I cut the tumor off your uterus, you flat lined and the baby went into stress. I tried to give the baby a minute but it was not helping. I preformed an emergency c- section and delivered a beautiful little girl with the prettiest jet black hair. When she was born I checked her heart rate and lungs and saw that heart rate was not stable and she was struggling to breathe. So I had to intubate her to help. She is now stable and I have started her on antibiotics and steroid's to help her. Once she was born you became stable again. If you stay stable tonight I will transfer you to a normal room tomorrow, but you little girl will be with us for a while. You can come see her whenever you like though. I do have a video of her, would you like to see it?"

"Yes please!" she said as tears were falling down her face. I pulled my phone out to bring up the video.

"She is so tiny. Are you sure she is okay?"

"Yes I'm sure but we will be monitoring her around the clock. Keep in mind she might be tiny but she has the spirit of a fighter. I do want to discuss something with you. Are you willing to breastfeed? The reason why I ask is because breast milk has been proven to help preemie babies."

"I was already planning on breast feeding so yeah thats fine."

"Oh good! I will bring you a pump tomorrow so you can start pumping. I'm going to step out in the hall so y'all can visit for a minute."

I walked out into the hall to start my charting. While charting I couldn't help but to let my mind wonder back to that stranger in the waiting room. I have never been the type to become immediately attractive to someone. He was a different story though. The logical part of me is saying to stay away from him but I know I can't. Maybe its just lust but as soon as I think that it feels wrong. Someone clears there throat behind me and it causes me to jump.

"Sorry about that mam but they have both fallen asleep and I don't have the heart to wake them. Is it alright if he stays the night? Fun fact about those two is that they have never spent the night apart from each other in years. Also can you show me back to the waiting room?" Seth asks. I peak around him and see them cuddled up to each other. I don't have the heart to wake him up to get him on a cot. I also feel like Seth gave me the fun fact story to guilt trip me into letting him stay.

"Yeah thats fine. He would have probably worried about them all night anyways. Let's head on towards the waiting room." As we start the walk back I realize Seth likes to talk.

"How long have you been a doctor?" he asks

"For almost 5 years now." I say

"You don't look that old" I stare at him for a second and wonder does this man not have a filter.

"I was the smart kid in high school and graduated high school when I was 14 and then I went straight on to college. After that I applied to medical school and spent my time training." I say.

"Oh thats super awesome!" He says. I decide to flip the questions back on him.

"What do you do?" I ask

"I'm a cop like my dad was. Well technically he was my step-dad but I always considered him my dad." When he finishes that sentence he looks away from me. I could see he was struggling to keep tears from falling.

"Well I think that is awesome that you decided to follow in your dads footsteps. I bet he is very proud of you. I know that I just meet you but I'm proud of you." He looks at me and smiles.

"Thank you! What about you. Did you follow in your parents footsteps?"

"The simple answer to that is no."

"Well if you ever need a friend to talk to I'm here for you." He gives me the biggest grin he could manage

"Thank you!" I say as we reach the waiting room. As soon as we enter all the men stand up.

"They are both doing fine and y'all can come back tomorrow during normal visiting hour and see at least Isabella. Jacob is passed out asleep right now and I can tell all of y'all are tired. So go home and get some rest."

"Hi my name is Sam. Thank you for taking great care of them." The Greek god says as he extends his arm out to me to shake. As soon as my hand touches his its like a high power voltage shock is going off.

"Hi I'm Dr. Lenox McCarty and you don't have to thank me."

"They are my family and you saved two of them tonight. We are going to host a BBQ in your honor for what you have done." I stare at him for a second. No patient's family has every thanked me like that. Maybe its normally for small town people to do that.

"I can't accept that but thank you anyways." I say but I'm mentally kicking myself for saying it.

"Nonsense you will attend. Have a good night." He says and removes his hand from mine. They all start walking out the door. I don't know who this Sam is but damn I'm going to have to find out. I make my way up to NICU to check on my tiny human patient.
