Hi! If you're here, thank you for reading! This chapter isn't as good as the first two (in my opinion), writer's block, I guess? Anyway I hope you enjoy :).
"Are you sure you'll be alright without me?" Jack had asked Elizabeth earlier this morning. Eliza was now a month old, and Nathan needed Jack back at the jail.
"I'll be fine." Elizabeth had laughed at his worry, but now she wasn't so sure she could get through the day without him.
Little Jack was missing having his mother's full attention. In turn he had been fussy all morning, spilling his breakfast on purpose, throwing his blocks all the way across the house, and throwing tantrums every time Elizabeth said something he didn't like.
Eliza was also fussy today, she had already spit up three times all over Elizabeth, and cried every time she was set down.
Elizabeth sat on the couch on the verge of tears, when Abigail knocked on the door.
"Come in," Elizabeth said, her voice still a little shaky.
"Elizabeth, are you alright?" Abigail sat beside her, rubbing her shoulders
"Oh, I don't know, It's Jack's first day back at work, and I thought I would be ok, but Little Jack isn't being very cooperative and Eliza is fussy, and look at the house, it's a mess. I can't let Jack come home to this." She said all in one breath, tears streaming down her face.
"Elizabeth, you should have called me earlier." Abigail chided gently, "I have an idea, if it's ok with you."
"Tell me," Elizabeth said quietly
"Well first, let's get you cleaned up. Wash your face, comb your hair and change your dirty dress. I'll take care of the children for you." She instructed
Elizabeth did as Abigail told her, then came back downstairs, "thank you Abigail, I feel better already."
"That's good. Now, Rosemary and I will help you around here for the rest of the afternoon. You can focus on your little ones, they need you." Abigail revealed the rest her plan
"I can't ask you to do that!"
"You didn't ask, I'm offering." Abigail winked as she turned to the door to fetch Rosemary.
"Oh! Elizabeth! I have a wonderful idea!" Rosemary began
"What, Rosemary?" Elizabeth answered rolling her eyes, for this was Rosemary's fifth wonderful idea in one hour
"Do you have a long piece of strong fabric anywhere?"
"I think I do, why?"
"Oh, just bring it here."
She brought Rosemary the very long piece of Yellow cotton.
"Great! Just let me fix it up for you." Rosemary pulled a sewing kit out of her bag.
Moments later Rosemary cried, "I'm done!"
She held up the fabric, which was now two loops crossing each other. One side could open and close, thanks to the buckles Rosemary had installed.
"Uhh, what is it?" Elizabeth was confused
"Oh, you people really are tiny-minded." Rosemary said dramatically.
Abigail and Elizabeth looked at each other, laughing at the unintended insult
"Let me show you," Rosemary walked towards Elizabeth,
"you put it over you body, make sure your arm is in this hole,"
she pointed where Elizabeth's arm was sticking out of,
"you put Eliza in through the open side,"
she lifted Eliza and slipped her into the pouch made by the fabric against Elizabeth's body, "and then you close the buckles."
"A carrier?" Elizabeth asked, "that really is a wonderful idea, Rosemary, now my hands are free, but Eliza won't fuss. Thank You."
Abigail and Rosemary stayed and helped Elizabeth get the house in order. They stayed to visit a little while more, until they saw Jack coming from the front window, then they ran out the back door.
"Elizabeth." Jack ran up to her and embraced her, he lifted her and kissed her, sending chills up her spine.
"Jack, I'm so glad you're back."
The next day...
"Fiona!" Rosemary welcomed Fiona, who was stepping out of the stagecoach.
"Rosemary, Hi!" Fiona gave her friend a hug
Rosemary's eyes caught a glimpse of the girl climbing out behind her, 'She would make a good match for Nathan.'
But Rosemary's matchmaking skills weren't necessary, For Nathan had seen her too, and had thought she was beautiful.
He decided to go up to her, "Hi, I'm Nathan Grant, welcome to Hope Valley."
"Constable Grant, Thank You for the welcome. I'm Hannah Gray." She smiled, thinking he was very handsome.
"Do you need help with your bags?" He asked
"Uh, sure," She answered, "I'm staying at..." she pulled a piece of paper out of her pocket, "the 'Queen of Hearts'?"
"That's right this way," he started towards the door carrying her trunk.
"Lucas!" Fiona dropped her bags and ran to his arms, "I missed you." She said in between kisses
"I missed you too, like crazy." He looked into her deep brown eyes, pulled her closer to his chest, and stroked her curly hair.
"Lucas, I've been doing some thinking while we were apart. I missed you so much. Let's get married?" She raised one eyebrow in that way that made him want to pull her to the bedroom
"Married?" He was surprised, but happy, "Yes! Yes!" He swept her off her feet, kissing her passionately, when he realised that everyone in the saloon was watching them, he led her into the office with him.
Meanwhile at the jail, Nathan couldn't stop thinking about Hannah. Her brown-red curls, her bright green eyes, her wide smile, and the sprinkling of freckles across her nose and cheeks.
'If she stays for a week, I'll ask her to dinner with me.' Nathan made a deal with himself.
"A penny for your thoughts?" Jack had just walked in
"A penny would be nice, but some thoughts a man likes to keep private." He laughed
"You really have become secretive lately."
"Fine. There might be a little bit of a girl, and-"
"A little bit of a girl?" Jack bit his lip, trying not to laugh
"Just a little bit." Nathan laughed realising he made no sense
"Jack, I think Little Jack needs us to spend some time with him. Having a whole other person in the house is a hard change for a three year old." Elizabeth had been noticing his need more and more lately
"Why don't we leave Eliza at Rosemary and Lee's for an hour, when you're done." He gestured to the his daughter nursing on his wife's chest.
Rosemary welcomed her 'niece' with open arms. Little Jack thoroughly enjoyed his 'Mommy/Daddy time'. They read stories and played a few games, drew a few pictures, ate ice cream. they even had time for a short walk before Eliza woke up crying for her Mommy.
'This is it. This is my beautiful little family.' Jack thought contentedly as they walked back to their house that evening.
