More weeks had gone by and Gally had done well in recovering. Once Elise had deemed him strong enough to actually stand up out of bed he was more than happy. They took it slow still, testing his strength. It started with small walks around the room, and further progressed to him being able to go outside. He was an antsy person and didn't like laying in bed all the time, they learned the hard way when he was constantly caught attempting to sneak out of bed. But now that he was given permission he wanted to go any and everywhere.

Mel saw it as her chance to give him a tour of the small city they had and show him around. She started with the outside and worked their way in. Going from the outposts they had set up to watch for cranks, while also explaining what cranks were, then on to the gardens and the market. As they moved inward she showed him the housing areas and where he would most likely go once Elise was ready to release him from care. And finally ended the tour near the front walls that protected the Last city. Where WCKD and all the more wealthy were tucked inside safe and sound.

During the tour Gally told her more about the maze and how he and a bunch of other kids were all thrown in and expected to survive as part of WCKD's research in making a cure from them. It all sounded crazy to Mel but she believed it all. If an organization was desperate enough to take all the children, then surely they were capable of creating giant mazes for them all and having them run through it like lab rats. And in a way he said that this place reminded him a bit of it all.

"Once they left, I decided to go after them. But I knew I'd need the same type of key they had to even try. I had to find one of the grievers. Wasn't too hard since I followed the way they took. But some of them were still alive keeping guard of where the others found the way out. I tried to sneak to one of the dead ones closest to me, and right as I got the key one of them saw me and stung me. All those memories flooding back. I wasn't thinking straight and it ended up getting someone killed." He explained further as they found an isolated spot to have some lunch.

Mel listened carefully, giving him her full attention as he spoke. She gently put her hand on his shoulder which seemed to snap him out of the memory.

"You weren't in your right mind. Surely you can't be blamed for that." She replied hoping it gave any sort of comfort.

"In a weird way. I miss it, the Glade. It was home for three years. All I'd known since they took our memories before sending us up. We all had our share of work and responsibility and we made it work." He looked down at his empty plate, missing the taste of Frypans cooking every night.

"I can understand that. I don't think I could ever see myself leaving here. Even though it's not the best, I grew up in this. I barely remember much from before to miss it, I was too little." She smiled finding common ground for them to share. She then placed her hand to her pocket and immediately panicked when she felt nothing there. She quickly got up and looked around, angry at herself for not noticing it fall out.

Gally watched her frantic movements and got up himself. "Hey, what's wrong."

"M-My picture. It's gone, I always keep it in my pocket and it must've fallen out somehow. Dammit." She was now looking around the area and was ready to retrace her steps back the way they came.

"Wait, you mean this?" Gally asked as he pulled out the small picture from his own pocket. "I saw it fall when we were leaving the med room, picked it up for you and forgot I even had it." He then held it out for her.

Mel grabbed it quickly and looked down at it feeling instant relief as she sighed. After giving a quick thanks she chuckled at herself feeling a little silly for getting so worked up over a piece of paper.

He watched her a moment before gesturing to it. "Wish I had one of those. Something to remember them all by. To remember anyone really."

"My family." Mel spoke quietly, almost too low for him to hear. "It's the only thing I have left of them besides my necklace." She explained, gesturing to the butterfly dangling around her neck. "Without this, I don't think I could remember what they looked like, it's even hard just remembering what they sounded like."

Gally held out his hand, asking if he could see it. He didn't look earlier out of respect, plus it wasn't his and didn't want to seem disrespectful for someone who had done so much for him already and keeping him alive. He was trying to keep his manners in check. When she passed it to him he stared at it a moment and couldn't help but give a smile. It was a family picture, one like you'd expect it to be. Everyone smiling and happy, unaware of the future troubles to come.

"I was four. My brother was 6. It was taken right before we got here. When news spread about the virus and WCKD taking the lead on creating a cure our parents packed us up and brought us here. We traveled on a boat that took a few other families, we arrived here in the city after about a week." She explained as Gally continued to look at the picture, something in it seeming familiar to him.

"We were here only a few days before they started rounding up all the children and taking them. Some of the adults were smart enough and hid as many of us as they could. Afraid of what they'd do with us, while others gave them up willingly, hoping they'd be safer with them. Me and another girl were hidden under a floorboard, but my brother..He didn't get so lucky. They took him and I never saw him again after that. One of the reasons it's mainly adults here. But now you get to be added to the count." She smiled, wiping away at her eyes before any tears could fall.

"Holy!" Gally suddenly exclaimed causing Mel to jump and watch in confusion. Recognition finally setting in as he stared at the face of her brother.

"What, what's wrong?" She asked carefully taking the picture back and looking herself.

"He's your brother!" Was all he said trying to process.

"Yes that's my brother, what do you mean?"

"Newt! Newt is your brother!" He pointed at the young version of the boy. Mel's eyes widened, thousands of questions forming in her head as she opened her mouth to try and speak. How did he know his name just by looking at him? Then as the pieces slowly fell into placed it all clicked at once.

They were in the maze together.
