Disclaimer: I don't own Atla.
Katara glared at him, taking his confidence as arrogance and rolled her eyes.
—Yeah, big Avatar, I forgot that you can do whatever you want.
He ignored her obviously mocking comment, and wanted to say something, but got interrupted by a little girl calling.
—Katara!
The little girl came running and slipped on the snow, making her fall face-straight into the snow, in front of Aang. The waterbender widen her eyes out of shock, and wanted to come help the girl, but the Airbender was faster.
He gently lifted her up, cleaning the cold snow that was on her face. Her skin tone was slightly darker than his friend's, and her eyes were another shade of blue, while her dark hair was put into two cute braids.
Katara couldn't help but stare in awe, in this past week, she has seen Aang only like the avatar, a very powerful bender that was meant to stop the war. But now he was in front of her, gently brushing snow out of the 4 years old girl, and the waterbender couldn't help but smile.
When the little girl started crying loudly, Katara wanted to come in, when the Airbender made her a sign with his hand and gave her an expression that says "I got it".
He quickly gave her some comforting words, before taking out some marbles out his pocket and doing a trick Katara has never seen before.
The little girl was so mesmerised by his "magic" trick, which was just him using his airbending on a few marbels, that she calmed down immediately, forgetting why she was crying.
—Should we head back?
Aang asked, looking at Katara that just nodded.
—Hinnun, you shouldn't be going this far from the village, on your own.
Katara told the girl, in gentle tone, trying not to upset her again and to also educate her.
—I'm sorry, Katara.
The waterbender smiled at her showing that it is fine and took her hand into hers, in case she will decide to run away.
The little girl looked at her left, seeing the Avatar pretty close to her and held his hand too, being in the middle of the young adults. Katara blushed, feeling her heartbeat go up really fast, gulping at the realization that they looked like a family and let go of the little girl's hand that frowned at them.
—I wanna hold your hand!
She said and the older girl sighed defeated. Aang thought she was uncomfortable, and let go of the girl's hand too.
—No, no, no! You're getting it all wrong! I just want to hold both of your hands!
The little girl screamed. Katara and Aang gave each other a look, and both decided it will be better to not upset her again.
The two headed back, the tension grew thick when none of them said anything, mostly from Aang's side, he felt like he should initiate a conversation but he just couldn't get a hold of his words, being pressured by the fact that they might not have any "alone time" soon, if you could call it that, cause they had a toddler to care about.
Katara on the other hand was much more anxious, not so much about Aang but mostly because of how she reacted in front of her father and masters. "Sokka will tease me so much! "she thought to herself and sighed, while Aang seemed caught in his own thoughts, Katara glanced at him for much more than she'll like to admit, she took her time to finally notice their height difference, not bigger than 4 inches (10-11cm). She never thought about it until now, but she found him pretty attractive, pale skin, blue tattoos that went over his bald head and arms, all pretty unusual to what she was used. He had a troubled look on his face and his grey eyes seemed to wondering in other places she thought she could never reach, Katara felt jealous of him. He seemed so free and she was not.
Aang finally decided to ask her about the things he didn't know about the Water Tribe culture, he looked back at her, they made eye contact staring into each other's eyes for a second or two, before the waterbender broke it, looking away embarrassed.
"Good job, Katara, you got caught staring at him" she scolded herself, as her cheeks were heating up even more.
—I-
Aang tried to say, but got interrupted by a familiar voice.
—Katara! I got scared you ran away!
Her brother said, going in for a hug that she didn't have the time to reciprocate before he broke it off. Katara rolled her eyes at his comment.
—Ran away and what? You think I will leave my big brother all on his own?
She teased him with a small smirk and the surprised look on his face, turned soon into one that screamed "I just got disrespected".
—Please, I can live happily without you.
Sokka said rolling his eyes, not wanting to let her win the argument. Deep inside, he knew that this was not true, since their mom died, Katara has been the one to take care of him and without her, he would be helpless.
—Oh, yeah, right, Mister I-never-washed-my-clothes-before.
Aang smiled quietly, not wanting to interrupt their argument. He looked in admiration to the two siblings, seeing clear on their faces that they didn't mean the harsh words they were saying to each other. The Airbender soon became aware of the effect her brother had on the waterbender, she seemed annoyed, but he could hear happiness in her tone. Sokka was very special to her, so he will also be for Aang.
After he left, Aang never returned back to his masters and just spent his day in the tent, taking a nap and meditating, trying to put his thoughts in other, but the waterbender seemed to already mess his mind up. He frowned, not being able to take her beautiful blue eyes out of his mind, they were sad, but he saw in her something very similar to fire benders: the passion and determination from her eyes.
His "meditating" was soon interrupted by some kids whispering outside his tent, Aang opened the door, seeing two little kids, the girl was whispering to her brother something he could make up as:
—Come on, you talk to him, don't you remember when I took the blame for you?
Then the boy responded with a defensive voice:
—Because it was your fault!
The airbender couldn't help but laugh at the two, making them soon get really shy.
—Come on, speak up-
The little girl said through her teeth feeling embarrassed because of her brother.
—Ughh, fine!
He said annoyed, rolling his eyes. Aang wondered if when Katara and Sokka were younger, they acted like that too. He never understood sibling bonds, because he treated all of the monks the same and couldn't get more attached to any more than he did to Gyatso, but that was a different situation.
—Avatar Aang, dinner is ready!
The boy smiled at him, trying to seem as confident as possible, even if his voice cracked, he hoped the airbender didn't notice. He did, but just ignored it and smiled, thanking them for telling him.
Aang tied his robe again that already loosened up because of the time he spent inside and went to the usual dining to room that got quiet when he arrived. Eyes were pointed at him and he bit the inside of his cheek, knowing that he messed up. The Avatar told himself that he doesn't need to feel guilty for leaving because he did it for a good cause.
At the head of the table, there was Hakoda with two 3 empty chairs near him, knowing that the water tribe man likes having his children close to him, Aang left the two chairs empty that were the closest to him, and took the third empty one. The 3 masters and a very old woman were occupying the other sits.
"Where is Katara? " he sighed starting to play with the fork while the men continued talking about his training and other boring stuff.
Finally, the tent opened and Aang smiled hopeful that he will see the beautiful girl, but his expression dropped in disappointment when he saw her brother instead, which immediately sat next to him, on the right of his father.
—Ugh, do I really look that bad today?
Sokka said with a serious tone, touching his freshly shaven face, he didn't mean his words, because he already knew he looked really good, but Aang didn't pick up on his sarcasm.
—Oh- oh no! I-
The Warrior laughed at his friend, touching his shoulder in a brotherly way.
—I was just teasing you.
The airbender mumbled an "yeah" and let a nervous laugh, trying to calm down.
—So.. Uhh.. Where is Katara?
He blushed, but his friend didn't seem to notice and spoke uninterested:
—She's doing some girl stuff, you know, they always take so long to get ready.
Aang just nodded, letting his chin rest on his palm really bored.
—Sokka, why don't you move on your father's left?
The Water Tribe boy gave him a confused look, knowing that he'll need serious reasons to move from his usual spot.
—I kind of want to talk with your sister.
Aang tried to say as nonchalantly as possible, begging that he wouldn't question him.
—Do you have a crush on her?
