"Okay so Mike's dropping off a test in twenty" Clara placed her phone on the bench when she re-entered the kitchen
"You told him?"
"Given that we're already expecting he kind of figured it wasn't for us but I've told him he needs to keep his mouth shut especially when around Mum"
"Since when has he ever done that"
"I can be pretty persuasive, take sex away for a week and he will cave" she smirked when the doorbell rang
"Who's that?" Kate raised an eyebrow
"Are you expecting anyone?"
"No I wasn't even expecting you, it's probably just Mike"
"Stay here" she held a hand up moving down the hall, pulling the door open Clara looked at the intruder in confusion
"Uh hi…" he pushed his hands into his pockets
"Dylan?"
"I hope you don't mind; I got the address from a friend I kinda was hoping to see…"
"Me?" Kate stepped into view
"It's late Dylan you should head home" Clara interrupted
"I know I'm sorry I just needed to see you" he looked past her at Kate
"It's okay CeCe why don't you wait out front for Mike" Kate placed a hand on her sisters back
"I'll be right outside if you need me" she moved past Dylan
"Come in" Kate motioned to Dylan who entered immediately.
"So should I be scared or humbled that you found my address?" Kate walked into the kitchen with Dylan following behind
"I have a friend who is a former cop, he looked you up for me"
"Wow getting your police buddies to track me down you really don't give up do you"
"Like I said earlier, once you taste the forbidden fruit"
"Forgive me but didn't you show up here not the other way around" she raised an eyebrow
"Touché"
"So why are you here Dylan?"
"Honestly, I'm not exactly sure, after getting your address I didn't think of what next until I ended up here…"
"Okay…"
"Katie! Your package is here" Clara called out
"I'll be right there!"
"Package?"
"Look it's late, you should really go" Kate went to move past him
"How about a night cap, a little get to know each other over hot chocolate?" he asked hopeful
"I don't know.."
"Please?"
"Okay… you'll find the mugs in the cupboard above the microwave, hot chocolate in pantry" she shook her head
"One hot chocolate coming up" he smirked when she continued down the hall.
"Your not letting him stay are you?" Clara scowled handing over the paper bag
"Look on the bright side, if it's positive at least I don't need to track him down"
"Kate…"
"I'll call you in the morning, go home be with your husband" Kate pulled her into a hug
"This really isn't the way you should…."
"I'll be fine"
"Fine but you call me the minute you know, or if you need me" Clara reluctantly pulled away from the hug
"I will I promise" Kate nodded
"Good"
"Tell Mike thank you" she held up the paper bag when Clara moved out onto the front porch
"Don't wait to long, it's better to know then wonder"
"Goodnight Sis" Kate smiled closing the front door.
Taking a deep breath Kate made her way back up the hall into the kitchen placing the paper bag of the chair near the bench she smiled softly when Dylan turned around with a mug in his hand
"One hot chocolate with some weird sprinkles I found, you know their kind of shaped like…"
"Thank you!" Kate quickly interrupted when he placed it on the bench
"I'm not going to even ask where you got penis shaped sprinkles" he laughed grabbing his own mug without sprinkles
"My sister's sense of humour isn't exactly rated PG"
"I see how it is blaming your sister for your dirty mind"
"My mind is as clear as the sky on a warm day" she lifted her mug to her lips
"Mm-hmm" he moved past her over to the couch.
...
"So, what's with all the boxes?" he asked placing his empty mug on the coffee table
"I just moved here last month" she placed her own mug down
"Where were you before here?"
"Sydney I was working at my Parent's bar there"
"Your parent's own a bar?"
"They did, it was sold six months ago after my Father had a heart attack"
"Oh I'm sorry…"
"It's okay.. they sold up and moved down here to Cairns and Mike offered me a job at Flynn's so I finished up things in Sydney and moved down here" she smiled sadly
"And when you say 'finished' things up does that include the ex-husband?" he asked nervously
"You know about him?"
"Mike kind of let it slip when I was checking you out earlier tonight"
"Of course he did"
"Your ex.. um he's out of the picture?"
"We've been separated for a year, the divorce was made final today"
"That must be hard" he gave her a sad look
"It was to start with but then I realised everything he wanted was just a fairy-tale to him, he had all he ever wanted and it wasn't good enough"
"That's crazy, how could he not be happy with having you as his wife?"
"When we met in high school he was the biggest player, had a different woman every week"
"And you were attracted to that?" he raised an eyebrow
"Not that part, it was the other part people never saw he was sensitive, caring and he was very, very sexy"
"Sounds like a pompous jerk" Dylan huffed
"Are you jealous?" Kate laughed
"Pfft-no"
"Yes you are, you're so jealous right now" she pushed her foot across the couch nudging his leg
"Just continue with the story" he shook his head
"He must have run out of women eventually because when I was nineteen and working my first job at a local coffee shop off the Uni campus he tracked me down and I thought he was different, more mature grown up"
"He wasn't?"
"At first maybe, but after we got married he changed started sneaking out, keeping secrets"
"How long were you guys married for?"
"Oh um…" she bit her lip "about three years but we were together for ten"
"And he what? Decided to just go back to his old ways"
"According to him I was too smothering and sneaking out was the only way he could have fun, but when I found out he cheated with an old school friend that was really the last straw for me" she picked at a loose thread on the couch
"Kate I…" Dylan moved along the couch towards her
"He said 'it isn't what it looks like' I caught him with his dick in another woman and it isn't what it looks like"
"I'm sorry you had to go through that, but you know not all men are like that some of us treat a woman the way she's meant to be treated" he said softly pulling her into his arms
"Like you, you mean" she sniffled with a slight laugh
"Me, Mike my friend down at the docks Charge" he brushed his hand through her hair
"Thank you…" she mumbled lifting her head to meet his eyes,
biting her inner lip she lifted her head closer to his surprised when he pulled away shifting off the couch
"Uh.. so thanks for the hot chocolate, but I should head out it's late" he cleared his throat
"Sorry I…" she moved to stand
"No it's okay"
"I overstepped"
"No I'm just trying to be a gentlemen"
"You a gentlemen?" she teased
"I know, I know" he step forward placing a kiss on her forehead
"I'll see you out…" she looked up at him
"I'll see myself out, it's late you should head to bed" he winked moving back towards the hall
"Well I do remember saying that when you first showed up"
"Goodnight Kate"
"Goodnight…" she smiled giddily when she heard him walk up and the hall and exit her apartment.
Pulling her jumper on just before lunch the next day Kate shook her head when her sister's face lit up the screen on her phone,
pressing the answer button and putting it on loudspeaker she dropped it on the bed
"No CeCe he didn't stay the night" she laughed pulling her hair out from her jacket
"How did you even know I was going to ask"
"Because it's you, and you can't help yourself"
"As a matter of fact I'm actually calling about something else" she answered, Kate practically hearing her roll her eyes through the phone
"The test?" she asked softly sitting on the end of the bed
"Did you take it?"
"Ah no, no I haven't"
"Kate!"
"It's fine, I'm not Pregnant"
"How do you know that? You haven't even taken the test" she huffed, picking up the phone Kate took it off loud speaker and placed it next to her ear
"I got my Period last night, so I can assure you definitely not pregnant"
"Right…"
"It must have just been out of routine after missing my birth control"
"Well good, good…"
"Good" she nodded
"Good" Clara laughed softly
"Listen if that's all I really got to head out, I'm on the lunch shift today and your husband needs my expertise with the delivery orders"
"He is hopeless"
"You married him"
"Yeah, yeah listen we still on for dinner tomorrow?" she asked hopeful
"Absolutely"
"Great, see you then"
"Bye Sis" Kate hung up the phone throwing it back on the bed she ran her hands through her hair,
taking a deep breath she moved off the bed to finish getting ready for work.
