Kate swirled around the dance floor, catching a glance of Jack with each twirl. Jack had his hand on the small of a tall blonde's back. Her eyes narrowed, Jack's ex had been a blonde and she assumed from old photos that Sarah was much taller than she was. Kate couldn't shake the gnawing suspicion that maybe tall blondes were his type; perhaps if they had met in the real world he never would have noticed her.
"You're a pretty good dancer," she whispered to the red headed man when he dipped her. It nearly took her breath away to lock eyes with him; his green eyes were almost the same shade as her own. It was like looking into her own eyes.
"You're not so bad yourself," he purred, gently pushing her closer to him. Kate knew what he was doing but didn't mind, he was a nice enough guy and a good enough dancer. She rested her head on his shoulder, feeling her body relax slightly.
Jack felt his jaw clench. Kate had been talking to the red headed man for maybe a half hour and now her head was on his shoulder? He swayed uncomfortably back and forth. The woman dancing with him barely spoke and Jack assumed she barely danced based on her skill. He remembered how it felt to have Kate as his partner. The two would dance for hours, lost in each other's movements. She seemed like a paper doll on the dance floor, so light in his arms and floating across the dance floor. It burned him up inside to see the man's hands on her; even when she wasn't his, she was his.
When the song ended, he shook hands with the blonde before approaching Kate again. "A dance?" She smirked at him as if he were a guilty pleasure and for a moment he wondered if he was. Whether he was or not, she nodded and took his hand when offered.
"I saw you and that blonde dancing," Kate purred as they began dancing.
"Where were you?" He feigned innocence.
"Dancing with a handsome gentleman."
"I didn't even notice you on the dance floor," he tried to play it cool. He took the slightest of steps forward to get a glimpse of her furrowed brow, a clear sign he was getting under her skin. He couldn't let Kate know how much it bothered him; being vulnerable about his feelings hadn't gotten him very far. He needed to make her feel that same yearning that he had felt since he'd lost her. He needed her body to ache for his touch the way his did for her.
"Good," she played along "it would have been weird if you saw that kiss," she shrugged.
"You didn't kiss him!" Jack burst out possessively.
Kate grinned like the Cheshire Cat. It was almost too easy with him. They had the same reaction to seeing each other with someone knew. The only difference was she would be damned if she ever let on to the way it made her feel to watch Jack with another blonde.
Taking a moment to regain his composure, Jack pulled her tighter against his body, close enough for her his desire for her stirring. She put her head on his shoulder as a meek attempt to hide the way she bit her lips with closed eyes. Carnal desires took her over and she knew she was caving.
"I should probably go," she whispered as the song ended. "I don't want your mother watching Aaron too late..."
"Oh?" Jack wagged his eyebrows in victory. "Gotta make a quick escape?"
She maintained eye contact as she opened her small clutch, which was overflowing with business cards and napkins with numbers sprawled. "I'd say I won."
"I forgot about that silly contact; I think I made a real connection with Jade," he pushed.
"Well, blondes are your type," she rolled her eyes as she pulled herself away from him. "I'm leaving."
He sighed as he watched helplessly while she took off towards the quickest exit. He knew better than to chase after her. The best thing was to let her wind herself up until she was ready to explode.
Then, he just had to be there to reap the benefits.
