Digimon Adventure:
First Encounter
Chapter 3
"Tai! Kari! Sota!" We suddenly heard our dad call out in a slightly slurred voice, making Tai whip around before scampering to the door and grabbing onto the handle, using all his strength to hold it in place as Koromon slowly turned his head to look at the door. I could see dad's silluete in the slit window of our door as he tried to open it. Luckily, Tai was able to hold onto it long enough for dad to eventually give up on trying to get in to give Kari, Tai and I a goodnight kiss.
"I told you to stop." Mom's muffled voice stated from the other side of the door. "Enough already! Think of the neighbors, too. You're always like this..."
I watched as the shadows moved away, mom's voice fading and both Tai and I let out a sigh of relief. Then, I noticed Koromon was moving and I quickly followed, Kari already by our window and opening it.
"Kari, get down from there! What are you doing, you dummy?!" Tai snapped from his spot by the door, hands still on the door handle. Kari climbed onto Koromon's back and I quickly followed suit. Koromon moved, his large body breaking parts of the wall that surrounded the window and shattered some of the glass. "Man, I'm gonna get grounded for this..."
"Piggyback?" asked Kari as she looked at Koromon's large eye.
"Kari, Sota- no!" Tai shouted out moments before Koromon jumped, making me yelp while Kari laughed as I tightened my hold on Koromon's scales. We landed on a car, crushing it and making the car alarm sound.
"That was scary..." I whimpered but Kari didn't pay much mind to my words.
"Now, let's play horsey!" She chirped before Koromon ran out of the parking lot and away from the apartment complex that we lived in. We came up to an intersection and he stopped, looking around. "Remember to look both ways when you cross the street! See any cars?"
Koromon made a growl that sounded like a no.
"Do you even know what a car is?" Koromon made the same growl before he started to move again. "Just be careful then."
We continued on before we noted a light coming from around the corner behind a building. Koromon trotted over and rounded the corner and we found that the light was coming from four vending machines that were humming lowly.
"Soda...I'm thirsty. Are you?" Kari asked me and I nodded before she slid from Koromon's back. he let out a humming growl before reaching over and placing his claws on the part where you'd usually put yen in. His pushed his claws into the machine, breaking it. He lifted it up and cans tumbled out of it, landing on the ground at his feet. "Mom just puts money in but I guess that works to."
I watched as Kari hurried forward and she began to try to pick up a few cans but some slipped from her grasp. Koromon flung the broken vending machine away, letting it crash to the ground a few feet from us before he began to walk again. Kari noticed and quickly followed after, asking Koromon where he was going but there was no answer. Only thing he did do is to stop to allow Kari to climb back onto his back next to me before he continued on his way.
"You should have told me you wanted to go." Kari scolded but he gave no indication he heard her, just continued on his way. Then, he stopped in the street, walking towards one way when the car passed him and then the other when another passed. "You know, we shouldn't be playing in the street."
He repeated the process, saying nothing to us and I couldn't help but grow sad at the silence we were getting from him. "Koromon...you're not talking to us anymore?"
Again, he was silent and seemed to stare at the red taillights of the car before bright lights suddenly illuminated us from behind, making Koromon look and then, he jumped right over the Truck that almost hit us and landed back on the ground, his whole body turned towards the truck.
"Can we do that ride again?" asked Kari.
"Koromon...?" I questioned when I noticed Koromon's jaws opening and a faint redish light coming from it. I could also feel the heat.
"PEPPER FLAME!"
A deep, growling voice came from Koromon before he let loose a fireball that missed the truck and hit a telephone booth instead, making it go up in flames. I could only stare at the burning booth as Kari let out a whimper before Koromon moved on and Kari moved up to hang off of Koromon's head as we went on. I was still reeling from the damaging power that our friend had now- could I still call him my friend after this?
Then, we suddenly stopped and I could hear an engine a little ways off, making me look. I could see a bus standing there and Koromon was staring straight at it. "Koromon...don't do it. Koromon!"
"Why are you looking at that bus?" asked Kari before she began to beg him. "Please don't blow it up! I know, my mom says that they are always late, but they can't help it!"
Koromon watched as the Bus began to turn. His mouth began to open, getting ready to shoot a fireball at it.
"Don't be a bad boy!"
A whirling noise caught his attention, making him look up, causing Kari to cry out in surprise as she hung on. I looked up and saw a few helicopters flying high above us.
"I wanna go home now, okay?" Kari whimpered but Koromon paid her words no mind and instead, shot the fireballs at the helicopters but they couldn't reach. He began to follow them as quickly as he could before he eventually gave up and stopped near some bridges, him watching as the helicopters fly out of sight.
"Can we...go home now..?" I asked Koromon as Kari slide down to be next to me. Koromon said nothing and, instead, tilted his head up towards the night sky, his eyes darting around as if he was trying to look for something. I looked up and saw a large oval shape in the sky that looked like an oversized egg. Then, it split open and a figure fell from it, down towards the city below. Koromon quickly trotted forward and down some stairs and under a bridge, his keen eyes watching the figure, which turned out to be a large green bird with a plate on its head and a pair of arms. We had met our second Digimon.
"That's a big bird..." Kari commented.
"Koromon.." I looked up at my friend but he didn't look away from the bird, even as it flew over us. The combination of Koromon whirling around and the wind caused Kari and I to fall off Koromon's back with a cry.
"PEPPER FLAME!"
I looked up and saw Koromon unleashed three fireballs towards the bird, though the bird was faster and the fireballs hit the side of a building. Kari and I stood up and, as the bird passed us again, we quickly latched onto Koromon as the wind whipped around. Koromon moved out to the middle of the road and began to shoot fireballs at it again and Kari and I quickly followed, trying to get him to stop.
"Koromon, no!" I cried out.
"Please, don't fight!" Kari begged as she placed her hands on his stomach before we were whirled around and was face to face with Tai, who looked tired.
"Kari, come on, we gotta go! It's too dangerous! Sota, we gotta get away!" Tai told us but we just pushed him away and turned back to Koromon, shouting his name and trying to get him to listen. I could feel Tai trying to get a good hold on both of us and try to get us away but we didn't listen- like how Koromon wasn't listening to us.
"PEPPER FLAME!"
The fireball left Koromon's mouth and I heard it hit. I then heard a new voice let out a evil sounding chuckle from behind us, making the cold grip of fear wash over me.
"Now, it's my turn." The squawky voice stated before I heard electricity start to crackle.
SONIC DESTROYER!"
The crackle of electricity intensified for a moment before an explosions over our heads made me cover my ears. The bridge above us began to crumble and fall. Koromon lifted his arms up and tried to shield us with his body from any rocks that could crush us. Tai did his best to cover our body with his own and we stayed like this for what seemed like forever, even after the collapse finished.
Then I heard bits of rumble falling and landing on the ground but...it wasn't from the now collapsed bridge. I could hear a growl from above us as the night breeze ruffled our hair. Tai sat up, looking at bot me and Kari. "You both okay?"
"Uh huh." I nodded.
"Who's that?" asked Kari as her eyes traveled up. My eyes followed her line of sight and my eyes widened in awe at what I saw. He was bigger than ever and had a brown, three horned helmet on his head, red eyes and blue stripes all over him.
"Koromon...?" Tai looked up at the large dinosaur.
"I'm Greymon, now." Our large friend stated in a very growly and roughish voice as he moved his head, making the rocks that laid on it fall off and onto the ground before he looked down at us, mainly Tai and Kari.
"You can be whoever you want...big guy..." Tai told him as he continued to stare.
"A sign..." I spoke up, making Greymon turn his attention fully towards me. "Of our friendship..."
He stared for a split second before his eyes turned towards the bird, the look changed from soft to hard in that second. He let out a threatening snarl before he stood up and threw his head back before a light and blue glow started to come from his mouth.
"NOVA FLAME!"
A blue and white fireball hurled itself out of his mouth and to the bird and as it tried to dodge, the fireball hit its wing, taking it clean off. The bird let out a pained squawk as it landed on the street. As it began to get to its feet, Greymon let out a roar before he charged towards the bird and slamming into it. He locked fingers with it and began to try and push it back.
"Grey- Greymon!" Kari cried out with tears streaming down her face.
"Don't...quit." Tai encouraged Greymon quietly as he watched the battling monsters. The bird began to push Greymon back before grabbing him by the neck and managed to topple the other over onto his back. It went to strike at him with his claws but Greymon managed to catch the attack, putting them into another handlock as he got to his feet. I could see him jerking his head up and it was only when the bird had hit Greymon away that I saw his nose horn had went into the bottom beak. Greymon landed on his side, skidding back a few feet before he started to try and get up. Electricity began to cackle again and I could see the bird was getting ready.
"Greymon, look out!" I called out to warn him but it was too late.
"SONIC DESTROYER!"
There was a flash as the bird shot its electricity at Greymon, causing an explosion. Tai quickly grabbed Kari and I and brought us close to him just as Greymon landed close, his head landed beside us.
"Oh no, Tai, he's hurt!" cried out Kari as she got out of hour brother's hold and try to run to Greymon but Tai quickly grabbed her and held her back.
"Kari, there's nothing we can do!" Tai told her.
"Greymon!" I called out worriedly before I looked over at the bird and saw that it was coming towards us.
"Greymon, get up!" Kari cried out again.
"Greymon, wake up! He's coming!" Tai tried but still, nothing. I could hear the bird starting to charge its electricity back up.
"Please Greymon, you gotta get up!" I pleaded as tears started to stream down my face, my arms outstretched and reaching towards him. My arms dropped when he didn't wake up and I just started to let out small cries. Then, I heard Kari trying to use her whistle but she kept coughing and she couldn't get loud enough.
"Kari...it worked on me..." I heard Tai mumble to himself before realization hit both of us at the same time. He grabbed the whistle from Kari, took a deep breath before blowing into the whistle as hard as he could. The shrill sound echoed through the street as Tai blew for a good minute before he had to stop, panting as we Kari and I held our breath, staring up at our friend.
Red eyes snapped open and Kari and I cheered. Greymon got up, throwing his head back once more as he let out a loud roar.
"Go for it!" Tai told him.
"NOVA FLAME!"
He unleashed his attack, this time in a blue and white stream of flames. It engulfed the bird and it glowed brighter and brighter, making all of us throw our arms up to shield our eyes from the light.
"GREYMON!" I heard Kari call out, making me open my eyes and look. The sun was rising and Kari was in front of me and Tai, our friend nowhere to be found. "Where'd you go?! Don't you want to play with us anymore?!"
Tai made her way up to her and wrapped his arms around her, bringing her against him so she could cry into his night shirt. I made my way over to them.
"Don't cry Kari. Maybe we'll see him again." I stated, trying to cheer her up while I did my best to hold my own tears back. She and Tai looked at me, the older giving me a sad smile before bringing me into their embrace and we took comfort in each other's presence...
...At the time, we didn't realize that this night was the catalyst to our destinies that would come in a few years time. Our fates were intertwined with the Digimon ever since this night, the night we had forgotten and the night we eventually remembered.
