This takes place after A Tangled Gathering.
It was the next day, and Kingdom DunBroch had never been more festive than before. Of course, the kingdom had barely turned past three decades. But never had it been so decorated. The stone castle, a grand architecture, was dusted and furred with more rugs, curtains, and cushions than before. It had its charm like an early medieval castle, but some of the decors gave it some more life.
Queen Elinor was impressed and delighted with them. Her husband wasn't as detail-oriented but paid no mind. Still, he did notice all the decorations in his kingdom. It was impossible not to.
All over DunBroch, people were feasting and decorating their homes and the rest of the place with flags, Pictish stones, and colorful banners. All of this accentuating colors of green, red, tartan, and plaid combinations.
Along with the visiting dignitaries, merchants came along for a chance at spreading their influence, buyers, and/or pockets. They mixed and mingled with people and each other more than anyone. It was an opportunity they couldn't pass up.
Queen Elinor smiled as she saw it all. The additions to the highland games make things more festive. Foreign guests could be found everywhere, though some stayed in the "sophisticated" tent. They were mostly ignored, seeing as they barely ventured further out of it.
"You think enough decorations were put up?" The queen walked her husband.
"From the looks of things, I'd say more than enough," King Fergus said, noticing his guests admired their surroundings. He saw Arrendelle's royalty walking around. He and his wife wanted to greet them, but their daughter decided to do that for them as she had walked a pace over already.
The king tried reaching out to Merida, but a hand from his wife stopped him. He looked down to see Queen Elinor smiling at him.
"We'll meet up with them later. It's been a while since she last saw her friend," Elinor said as she guided her husband. "Now, let's get something to eat before we have to greet any more guests."
While a bit resistant, Fergus complied as he and his wife went for some refreshments. He could remember the letters Merida and Anna exchanged that brought some joy to his daughter's life. The princess didn't have many friends, especially girls, mainly due to the visits from the suitors and guests. After a few months of many invitations and courting attempts, Merida needed some time with friends.
Anna was particularly taken in by the colorful decorations mixed with the lush green scenery. There were tents filled with people sitting down and enjoying some Scottish cooking. However, many visiting dignitaries avoided haggis. They couldn't stomach the sight of it. She had been so excited only Elsa was adequately able to keep up with her as the sisters were separated from Kristoff.
The man grumbled at his luck but knew he'd eventually meet back with the sisters and walked off with his reindeer, Sven.
Elsa did admire the Celtic festivities, though she questioned some games planned like the log toss. While simple, the game of strength was not something the Queen could get engrossed in, nor were the looks she saw from some of the contestants.
Though the attempts of showing off and wooing did get some knights to try and participate, whether out of their desires or the protection of a queen's honor, no one knew.
Elsa and Anna were still curious but decided to question later since they wanted to enjoy the sights and the festival.
The two royal females went to see more, where they found the Celtic princess walking towards them. Anna rushed over to greet her fellow redhead.
"Merida!"Anna shouted once she saw her.
The red-haired princess smiled when she saw them.
"I missed you!" Merida said as she hugged the other girl.
"I missed you too!" Anna said before releasing her from the hug.
Merida then noticed Elsa, who was quiet but wore a smile. The two may not be friends exactly, but Anna was acting mediator as she smiled at Elsa.
"It's good to see you, Queen Elsa," Merida said with a bow. Mentally she hoped she used the proper greeting. It was hard to tell with Elsa, but the ice queen replied with a smile.
"As it is good to see you as well, Princess Merida," The Ice Queen said.
Anna looked between the two as she watched. She knew Elsa was not the most social person but could connect and talk with people. The ice queen had maintained order in their kingdom, and things were never bleak or dull. Though if there was one thing Anna knew, Elsa took a while to make friends real friends. It wasn't that she was resistant but rather take things slowly.
Which meant Anna had to take the lead on events like these.
"Well, come on. The festival is just starting," Anna said in an eager voice, pointing to the tents and games.
That got Merida and Elsa's attention as they left to see the next game, the stone put. It seemed the same as the caber toss, but this time it was a large stone thrown. Despite the fact it was more straightforward, in that it was a distance thrown, Elsa walked away as Anna and Merida did the same in favor of other athletics, such as archery and horse races.
As they walked along to the archery range, a woman in a pink dress with brown hair and green eyes spotted the trio. She immediately rushed over to greet them, calling them out.
"Elsa! Anna! Merida!"
They turned to see Rapunzel running over and giving her cousins the biggest hugs. It had only been months, but it felt more like years for the brunette princess. The letters they sent were fun, but it was better to meet in person.
"Rapunzel!" Anna said as she returned the gesture. The two hugged similarly as Merida and Anna did earlier. Rapunzel then gave the same to Elsa, who smiled at her family and then to Merida. The Coronian princess was welcomed anywhere in the Highlands as far as Merida and her parents were concerned.
"It's so good to you all again," Rapunzel said.
"I take it you have a safe trip?" Elsa asked.
Rapunzel nodded.
They saw two more familiar faces running over in the forms of Eugene and Cassandra. The man reached them first, panting as he stopped to catch his breath.
"We just arrived a while ago. Blondie, here, made a race towards the place as soon as she saw the tents," Eugene added. He pointed to Cassandra behind him, who as out of breath as he was. "Cass and I could barely keep up.
Merida and Elsa glanced at Rapunzel. The brunette didn't look any worse for wear, nor was any presence of sweat found on her. Anna just giggled as the group let the last two grab a moment to collect themselves.
"You guys want to join us?" Anna asked as her laughter died down.
Rapunzel gave a smile but shook her.
"Sorry, but it's been a long journey, and well, Eugene and I want to check out more of the festival. We'll catch up later, alright?" Rapunzel said.
While Elsa and Anna were happy to see their cousin again and wished to spend some time with her, they respected Rapunzel's wishes and let her be. Waving goodbye, the trios separated as they left to explore the games.
"We'll definitely catch up later!" Anna shouted.
Elsa would have given a minor reprimand if Rapunzel hadn't replied in the same manner.
"Meet up tomorrow?"
"Yes!"
The groups then walked away as the ice queen needed to talk to her sister.
"You know we are at this event representing Arendelle again, right?" Elsa asked.
Anna gave a sheepish smile in response, knowing full well she'll have to keep her shouting to a minimum. The sisters shared a stare before Elsa relented. She couldn't stay mad at Anna.
Merida, Anna, and Elsa walked around the
Of course, there were some consistencies. Elsa could. Feel the gaze of men as they stared. Some tried their luck at flirting with the Arendellian royals. It either had them turned down or were pushed back by some nearby guards under order. If Kristoff were around, he'd shoo any of the men who flirted with Anna.
Merida rolled her eyes and chuckled. While she was sick of suitors, she couldn't help finding the irony funny.
Poor girls. She thought in amusement.
They soon arrived at a tent, but unlike the others, this was far more decorated. It had a regal purple tarp with some gold trimmings.
It was a tent for those visitors who would want a recluse from the Scottish traditions. The lords and clans had argued against it, but it wasn't right to have their guests uncomfortable. Besides, it wasn't permanent, and it's only for a few days.
"We have a lot of names for this tent..."Merida said as she showed it to her guests. Looking inside, they saw a makeshift ballroom with a bar inside. They were very detailed with an expensive carpet below. Small tables were scattered as servants went around with drinks. None of them were people of the kingdom and were brought over with the visiting diplomats.
The trio could make out comments and conversations as the visiting royalty spoke over wine and snacks. One man complained about the structure of the castle as his wife remarked how dreadful the attire seems. A duchess agreed with the latter, talking about how uncivilized it seemed. The final comment was how one of the servants almost dropped one man's special luggage. While it was debatable about how special it was, the women figured they heard enough and closed the curtain.
"And this is the reason why," Merida added in a whisper.
Walking away, Anna and Elsa felt some understanding for such a place but couldn't help wondering what the point was. Visiting a foreign domain meant learning the culture one had developed—especially with such a new kingdom.
But such were some set in stubbornness. Hopefully, those in the tent would be more flexible as the days went by. DunBroch wouldn't likely make any trades or alliances with those who would reject its people and traditions.
"If we ever host an event like this, let's make sure not to allow a tent like this, " Anna remarked. Elsa chuckled at the irony, for such an idea would not be necessary.
The trio walked around, taking in the sights, everyone, and then some. Many tents allowed the girls to rest and enjoy refreshments. However, Elsa could make do without the stares.
"Thank you for showing us around, Merida..."Elsa said politely as they walked away from a game of Maide-leisg.
"Eh, think nothing of it. After all, it's supposed to be a princess's duty to show her guests around..."Merida answered with a wave.
The air was calmer as the ice queen, and Celtic princess grew used to each other. The sites were lovely as they continued. Soon, it was time for a fighting competition, and all the royals went to see. This event was made for those who wanted to test their might. Or just to fight without getting in trouble. Whichever was the case. However, it was mostly the latter.
The girls found themselves seats as they watched. The crowd cheered as the burly man yelled in victory. He lifted his arms, enticing the crowd for more as his beaten opponent walked away.
"Who's next?" he said.
The crowd was eagerly silent as they waited for anyone to come up. And from the bleachers came a young, skinny man in armor.
"I'll be your next challenger."
"Hey, isn't that—?" Anna asked before being shushed by another member of the audience. While rude, she ignored it as she watched in silence.
The Highlanders, both on and off the field, laughed on cue. They compared the boy with their large champion. It appeared to be no contest between the two, yet the challenger stood proud despite the man being twice his size.
"And what would you're name be?" the burly man asked, leaning down.
"Sir Justin. Knight of Gabylonia."
"Well, Sir Justin, you think a wee lad like you can handle a warrior like me?" The man taunted, flexing his muscles.
"I've handled worse," Justin quipped as he got into a stance.
The burly man smirked at Justin, guffawing at the comment. He noted the confident glint in the challenger's eyes. Though he felt bad having to beat someone far below his weight essentially, the man respected the knight's wishes and cracked his knuckles.
"Very well," the burly Celt said. "But don't blame me when your spine snaps in half like a twig."
Justin nodded with a grin as everyone watched. Merida, Elsa, and Anna, who knew the knight from before, didn't know what to expect. Yes, he held his own during an invasion, but this was different. The man was more than twice his size.
A man blew a horn, starting the fight.
The burly man charged forward, screaming, but Justin took a stance and avoided him. The knight held his foot out and tripped the man. With the hurt warrior Rolling forward, the crowd gave a cheer and laughed as they watched.
"Oh, looks like the little rabbit has a few tricks..."The large warrior quipped as he got up. He knew now to take the fight more seriously and carefully walked over to the knight.
"A knight must train to fight those bigger than him," Justin quipped as he lowered his stance.
The royals and guests looked in awe as the two fought. The burly man cracked his neck as he paced slowly around Justin before rushing to him. He managed to grab Justin by the arm before slamming him down.
"Had enough, little rabbit?"
Justin picked himself off the ground. He shook off the dirt before glancing back with a grin.
"I take it that was suppose to hurt," the knight quipped.
The burly man laughed as the crowd joined. The fight was getting more exciting as the combatants circled each other, waiting for one to make the next move.
Anna, Merida, and Elsa watched with some intrigue. The battle escalated quickly from a one-sided appearance to a real match. Highlanders and visitors cheered as they watched Justin duck under his opponent before grabbing a leg and pull. The knight ran back a bit before wh carving forward with a kick, connecting as the burly Celt lifted himself and turned around.
It didn't push him far but knocked a bit of wind out of the Celtic warrior. The two ran toward each other. While the fight was fun, they couldn't overreach for time. There were still others who wanted a chance to battle. It was time to end this.
Justin tried to punch the man but found his fist caught. He attempted with the other fist but was met with the same results.
With a smile, the burly man swung Justin up, intending to slam him down again. However, once the knight was in the air, he slammed his feet into the man's head and proceeded to send a flurry of kicks his way. After a few moments, the Celt had enough and relinquished his grip before he fell.
Justin raised his arms in victory.
As the crowd cheered, the burly man got and clapped his hands. He walked over to the knight and slapped him on the back while guffawing.
"That was a good fight. Next time we battle, I won't take you as lightly," the Celt said.
"Nor will I," Justin retorted, and the two shook hands.
Justin walked out to the stands, where Talia greeted him with a hug. The girl gave a kiss on the cheek and smiled. The knight turned to see the company of Merida, Anna, and Elsa and quickly knelt, as was the proper conduct of a knight greeting royalty.
"Greetings, your majesty," Justin said, kneeling. "Pardon my lateness in manners, but—"
"Oh, it's fine...Sir Justin, right?" Merida interjected.
"Yes, your highness."
"It's fine. Really. You don't have to worry much about manners here," Merida said, pointing to another tent. A few Celts had a disagreement where they then started name calling as they challenged the other to take a hit with raised fists.
"Uhh...right," Justin said as he stood up. "But I think I'll keep to my manners."
"With who's coming, that may be tough, " Talia sparked as she gestured to someone coming.
It was a bearded man in purple robes who walked over. He seemed jolly and patted Justin's shoulder in approval.
"See, I told you he could do it," the wizard said, leaning to the left before looking right and talking in a deep, foreboding voice. "Well, I still say there were doubts!"
Everyone but Justin and Talia watched in horror as the man twisted his head and turned his body as he seemingly argued with himself. It was an odd thing to see and somewhat entertaining to watch, as first the wizard looked to his right waving his wand all dainty before taking a few steps forward and turned around laughing maniacally and used the wand with more vigor.
Elsa looked to Anna, unable to think about what to make of the situation. She had been gifted with magic all her life, but it was the first time she had seen such a strange man. It was hard for her to tell if the man was magical or not.
"Are you alright?" Anna asked.
"Oh, we're fine," Melquiades said as he waved. "Karolius and I were just having doubts about who was right."
"The man was twice Justin's size!"
"And we've seen him handle worse."
"Against a few scrawny crooks!"
"There was an army."
"ANd that compared to the burly man how!?"
"Sometimes, you are just impossible."
The argument went on as people watching thought the man was part of the festivities. Eventually, Justin had to intervene before a "magical duel" started, and that's when things would get crazy. But not in the magical sense.
"Is he gonna be alright?" Merida asked, perplexed by the man's behavior. She reached out for something to defend with, unnerved by the man.
"Ignore Melquiades or Karolius," Talia quipped. "He or they are a bit of an oddball."
"But a valuable friend when you need him," Justin added.
Both halves of the wizard thanked the knight as the group decided to journey the highland games together. There was still plenty to see, but it was the first day, so the group took things slowly, enjoying the stands and merchants with their stocks.
It was true. Most, if not everyone, was enjoying themselves. Even those in the Tent of Sophitiscation couldn't complain much. Now, if they could only step outside and experience the Gaelic festivities, then maybe things could be better.
The group walked along and saw some familiar faces from the Grand Kingdom Meeting before. They saw the young King Arthur walking about the tents. However, it was difficult for him to partake in anything with his knights surrounding him. Sir Bart and Sir Kay, noticing the group, bowed in respect as they led the boy king. In a new domain of unknown allies, Merida and the group were a relief for the trained warriors.
"Princess Merida, thank you for the invitation. The festival is great," Arthur said with a smile.
"Yoor welcome, but it's mae father and mother yoo should be thankin. They're the ones who sent out the invitations," Merida replied.
The boy king nodded. He was about to ask about the traditions and sights of the lands, an act that previously exhausted Princess Rapunzel and Prince Eugene, but his attention was distracted by the smell of some baked treats at a nearby tent. The boy had forgotten to eat in his excitement and excused himself. His knights followed as Merida was spared an exhausting event.
The Celtic princess smiled at the mostly happy faces she saw as she, Elsa, and Anna walked along.
"This isn't so bad," Elsa commented, dropping her shoulders a bit.
"See? I told you so," Anna said, lightly elbow jabbing at her sister.
Elsa wore a playful smile. She had to admit she was enjoying herself. The music was festive, and the food, while some weren't appealing to the eyes, was delectable. Perhaps she had misjudged her idea to decline the invitation months ago.
She looked to Merida, who was laughing with Anna. The two were good friends, and it made the ice woman happy to see her sister smiling.
And that's when everyone could hear a loud horn.
"Dragons! Incoming!"
