Chapter One: Bring Honor to Us All

Elsewhere in China, the sun started to rise over an estate. In one of the many rooms in the house, a young Red Heeler Dog was getting ready for an important day. Chili Redler was wearing a white top and blue skirt while having a little breakfast as she prepared. She used a pair of chopsticks while reciting, "Quiet and demure."

Grabbing a clump of rice from the bowl she then said, "Graceful. Polite." She placed the clump of rice in her mouth and said with her mouthful, "Delicate."

Grabbing up a paint brush from behind her ear, Chili painted a few more words onto the fur of her arm to help her. She looked at the scroll before stroking the brush, "Refined. Poised." She finished with the last word, "Punctual."

But the sound of a rooster crowing made her look out the window before realizing that she was not the last thing. Scrambling out of the bed Chili said, "Ai-yah! I'm going to be late."

Chili ran through the house to get what needed to be done before heading off. She called out into the house, "Little brother!" The Red Heeler blew on the ink on her arm while running. She stopped in another room and called out, "Little brother!"

Chili heard the sound of snoring and looked down to the floor. Sleeping peacefully was a little blue animal that looked like a cross between a bear and a koala. Chili kneeled down and said, "There you are. Hey, Stitch."

The sound of her voice roused the little blue creature from his slumber and he scrambled onto his feet. Chili smiled, picked him up and asked while placing him at the ready, "Who's the smartest little thing in the word?"

She walked over to a stack of corn sacks while asking him, "You want to help me with my chores today?"

Stitch gave a sound that sounded like a cross between a bark and saying yes. Chili laughed a little before tying the bag of feed to him along with a bamboo stick that held a piece of meat on it. When she let go, Stitch growled as he tried to grab the piece of meat and started running out into the yard to feed the chickens. Chili opened the door to let him out, but the little blue creature ran into the wall beside the door. Chili winced from it before Stitch got back up and chased after the piece of meat again, this time heading right out the door. Chili laughed as she watched him run through the yard with the feed bag dragging behind him and the contents spilling out in a trail. The chickens reacted by flocking to the trail and pecking at it. Stitch ran all over the place, even past the horse King who watched the little creature go. The horse nickered while casting at the Dog at the door.

With that done, Chili walked back into the house to get the rest of her chores done. Stitch ran through an opening while continuing to chase the piece of meat while doing Chili's chore for her.

Up in a family shrine on top of a hill, another Red Heeler Dog with a blue robe, black pants and short, black whiskers and the fur on his head tied back, was placing a burning incense stick on the chained dragon holder. Then Scout Redler carefully got down on his knees, placed his cane to his side, clasped his hands together and asked his ancestors, "Honorable ancestors, please help Chili impress Lady Wendy the Matchmaker today."

But Stitch came running into the shrine and spilled the contents on the floor before running back out. The chickens had followed the little blue creature, came clucking in and started pecking at the corn on the ground. Scout looked to them before up to the marker in front of him and really pleaded, "Please. Help her today."

Chili came walking up the stairs of the shrine with a tray, a teapot and a cup on it. She was now dressed in a green top, white skirt, blue overshirt and a red belt tied around her waist. She happened to notice that Stitch was whimpering as he tried reaching for the piece of meat. Deciding to help the little fella out, Chili pushed the bamboo stick down and allowed Stitch to grab hold of the treat and eat it.

"Dad…" Chili said before turning back to the shrine, "I've brought you your…"

But she gasped when she accidentally bumped into him and dropped the tray. While the tray and the cup fell to the ground with the latter shattering, the teapot was sent tumbling through the air. Luckily, Scout was able to use his cane to catch the handle. Scout looked to his daughter and said, "Chili."

"Don't worry, I brought a spare." Chili reassured and brought out said spare from a back pocket. She poured some tea into the cup while her father tried to say, "Chili."

"Remember that the doctor said to have three cups of tea in the morning…" Chili reminded as she finished. She handed the cup to him and said, "And another three at night."

"Chili." Scout said to get her attention. She looked to him and he said, "You should already be in town by now. We are counting on you…"

"To uphold the Redler family honor." Chili finished with a proud smile. Then she hugged him and said, "Don't you worry, Dad. I won't let you down."

Behind her back she pulled down her sleeve to hide her notes a little better. Turning around she walked down the stairs, "Wish me luck."

"Hurry!" Scout shouted after her. The older Dog sighed before looking down at Stitch before watching his daughter go and said, "I'm going to go and pray some more."

Without another word, Scout Redler walked back into the shrine.

Over in the town, everyone was hustling and bustling about through the road ways. Standing by a building where the girls got ready before meeting with Wendy the Matchmaker, a Red Heeler, wearing a purple dress, was standing nervously on the side. Grace Redler looked about for her daughter. A Pomeranian stepped out of the building and said to the Red Heeler, "Grace Redler, is your daughter here yet?"

The Pomeranian shuddered when she said, "Wendy the Matchmaker is not a patient she-dog."

"Of all the days to be late, Chili…" Grace said with a groan. Looking up to the sky she said, "I should have prayed to the ancestors for luck just like Scout."

"How lucky can they be?" A voice from behind said. Grace looked back to see an older Red Heeler in a blue dress and an apron tied to her waist walking up to her with a small cage in paw. Lucy Redler looked up to the sky and said, "They're dead."

Grace gave a small smile as she appreciated what her mother-in-law was saying. Then showing Grace what she bought Lucy said, "Besides, with this, I've got all the luck we'll ever need."

Grace looked into the tiny cage and saw a little blue cricket inside. Lucy walked away while the cricket chittered. Lucy looked to the little critter inside and said, "Now, this is your chance to prove yourself, little fella."

The blue cricket seemed a little nervous for what the old she-dog had in mind. Lucy placed a paw over her eyes and took a step into traffic. Grace noticed what she was doing and called out, "Grandma Lucy, no!"

But the old Red Heeler kept going and people started shouting and animals grunted when they tried not to hit her. Some dogs tried slowing down when it seemed like they would hit her. A huge dust cloud erupted on the street and chickens were sent a clucking from the wreck. Lucy came walking out of the dust cloud and onto the other street with her eyes still covered. When she lifted her paw from her eyes, she saw that she was still okay. Lucy gave a laugh before turning back Grace, "Yep, this cricket sure is a lucky one!"

But when she saw some of the dogs in the wreck she winced and said, "Maybe they need a little more luck."

Grace gave a sigh of relief while the scared cricket inside the cage fainted. The sound of a horse neighing caught her attention and she looked to see Chili riding on King's back coming up. The horse jumped over some of the debris and towards Grace. When the horse stopped in front of the building, the young Redler hopped off and lifted her arms and said, "I'm here."

Grace gave her daughter an annoyed look from how her daughter looked a little dirty. The young she-dog had some hay in her fur and on her clothes. Chili noticed the look her mother was giving her and asked, "What?" She then remembered what happened and said, "But, Mum, I had to…"

"I don't want to hear any of your excuses." Grace said before pushing her daughter towards the building. With a nod she said, "Now, let's go and get you cleaned up."

Lucy took hold of King's reins and guided him along. The Pomeranian opened the curtain, looked over Chili when she walked in and started singing…

Pomeranian: This is what you give me to work with

Well, honey, I've seen a lot worse

She pushed Chili behind a paper foldout and helped her out of her clothes. When the Pomeranian was done she pushed a screaming Chili into a wooden tub.

Pomeranian: We're gonna turn this sow's ear

Into a lovely silk purse

Chili sat up in the tub and shivered from how cold it was. She rubbed her arms and said, "It's freezing in here."

"It would have been a lot warmer had you been here on time." Grace said with a knowing smile. The Pomeranian came back with a vase of water before splashing it down on Chili's head.

Outside the preparation building, two little dogs ran up to the door. One was a six- or seven-year-old Blue Heeler while the other was a five-year-old Red Heeler. They giggled from seeing Chili getting a path. Chili got the water out of her eyes when the Pomeranian continued…

Pomeranian: We'll have you washed and dried

Primped and polished till you glow with pride

Trust my recipe for an instant bride

You'll bring honor to us all

The Pomeranian left to go and get a few more things to help Chili. Grace grabbed hold of Chili's right arm and happened to turn it over. She then questioned, "Chili what is this?"

"Uh, notes." Chili said and pulled her arm away. Then she sheepishly admitted, "In case I forget something."

Grace rolled her eyes while Lucy walked up and handed her daughter-in-law the cricket's cage, "Hold on to this for me, deary. We're going to need a lot more luck that I originally thought."

She walked off to get the necessary things. Later when the bath was finished, Grace had invited the two little girl dogs in to help while Chili put on a blue top and white skirt. While two other she-dogs were getting Chili's outfit done, the little girls were drying and brushing Chili's fur and sang along…

Bluey: Just wait and see when we're through

Sheep Dog: Boys will gladly go to war for you

Bluey: With good fortune

Border Collie: And a great hairdo

Bluey, Bingo, Sheep Dog and Border Collie: You'll bring honor to us all

They finished making sure that Chili's fur was all dried and combed out. Grace came over, took Chili's hand and led her out. Other she-dogs were getting ready to present themselves. Grace looked to Chili and sang with the other she-dogs…

Grace and other she-dogs: A girl can bring her family

Great honor in one way

As they walked through a street, Chili saw a few old dogs playing a game against one another. The one with a bushy mustache on his snout smiled as he was winning while the other more plump dog looked a little bored about losing. Chili took a look at the board before moving a few pieces around. The proud dog became shocked while the plump dog seemed to enjoy the tables turning.

Grace and other she-dogs: By striking a good match

And this could be the day

While Chili looked happy to have helped out, Grace quickly back and grabbed her daughter's arm before leading her off. The plump dog boasted to the one with the mustache who just gave him annoyed look.

Grace, and the two little girl dogs lead Chili into another building where they started to complete her outfit. They put a longer pink sleeved over shirt with a dark red skirt over the white one as they sang…

Border Collie: Men want girls with good taste

Calm

Grace: Obedient

Sheep dog: Who work fast-paced

Grace: With good breeding

Sheep dog: And a tiny waist

Chili gasped when the sheep dog and her mother tightened a red ribbon around her waist. She looked to them as her mother and the other two dogs stepped in front of her and sang…

Grace and others: You'll bring honor to us all

Once again, Grace led Chili outside to another building while most of those getting ready sang…

Everyone: We all must serve our Emperor

Who guards us from the Huns

As they were walking by, two boy dogs playing with wooden swords ran by before one of them grabbed a doll from a little girl dog. But before they could get very far with the doll, Chili was able to grab it back before handing it back to the girl. The little dog smiled at her before hugging the doll tightly.

Everyone: The men by bearing arms

A girl by bearing sons

In another building, Chili sat on her knees while a Chocolate Lab prepared some makeup for her. The Chocolate Lab dipped a brush into some red paint before applying it to Chili's lips as she and Grace sang…

Grace and Chocolate Lab: When we're through you can't fail

Like a lotus blossom soft and pale

How could any fellow say, 'No sale"

You bring honor to us all (3x)

The Chocolate Lab had finished with a quick swipe of the brush to Chili's eye lashes. When Chili opened her eyes, she was a little put off by all the make up on her face. Her face was covered in white paint, pink blush, black eyeshadow and red lip stick. But she didn't make too much of a fuss. Grace unwrapped a cloth before placing a comb with a blossom on her daughter's head behind her ear. With a smile Grace said, "There. Now you're ready."

"Not just yet." Lucy said and walked in with the two girls behind her. The young Blue Heeler held a jade necklace while the little Red Heeler held an apple in her paws. The little Red Heeler looked to the apple before nearly taking a bit out of it. But Lucy was quick to grab it from her and placed it in Chili's muzzle while saying, "An apple for serenity." She placed a small pendant in Chili's pocket, "A pendant for balance."

Chili removed the apple from her mouth and looked to her grandmother with a smile as the older she-dog sang…

Lucy: Beads of jade

For beauty

She placed the jade bead necklace around Chili's neck who stood still so Lucy could clasp it together. Then tilting Chili's head up with a paw she sang…

Lucy: You must proudly

Show it

Grace walked over with the Lucky Cricket in its cage in her paws. First handing it to Lucy, her mother-in-law who then attached it to Chili's ribbon belt while she sang…

Lucy: Now add a cricket

Just for luck

And even you can't blow it

When she was ready, Chili started heading for the door. The two little girl dogs met her and the Blue Heeler said, "Good luck, Chili."

"We hope that you find your true love." The Red Heeler said with a big smile. Chili smiled back and said, "Thanks, girls. I'm going to need it."

The two watched as she walked out the door. When she stepped out, Chili held her fan close before looking up into the sky and sang…

Chili: Ancestors, hear my plea

Help me not to make a fool of me

She looked back to her mother and grandmother who stood with the two young dogs. She thought of all that was riding on meeting with Wendy the Matchmaker…

Chili: And to not uproot my family tree

Keep my father standing tall

Grace noticed that Chili didn't have the umbrella that all the other girls had and quickly rushed to give it to her. And as she handed Chili the umbrella, Chili ran to catch up as she and the other girls were a little nervous as they sang…

Chili and Girl Dogs: Scarier than the undertaker

We are meeting our matchmaker

The townspeople got in on the song as they walked by…

Townspeople: Destiny, guard our girls

And our future as it fast unfurls

Chili stood at the back of the line as it progressed through the town. She glanced a peek to see how she should present herself. The Red Heeler then stood tall with her umbrella in front of her…

Townspeople: Please look kindly on these cultured pearls

Each a perfect porcelain doll

Grace, Lucy, the girls and the rest of the crowd watched with pride as they walked up to the matchmaker's building. The girls ahead of Chili finished the song…

Girls: Please bring honor to us

Please bring honor to us

Please bring honor to us

Please bring honor to us

Please bring honor to us all

Chili and the other girls stood before the doors of the matchmaker's building with Chili standing in the middle. All five opened their umbrellas while kneeling and placing the opened umbrellas in front of them. Chili then took a deep breath as she hoped that this would go well.
