~Chapte 3~
A few guards had come and took her to one of the cells. They had thrown her in and left her there. It had been a long and painful process, but 2847 had cleaned her wound as best she could.
She lifted the side of her jacket and shirt to find the metal bar had been rubbing. This was the same for her wrists. She didn't want to find out about her legs.
She lay on the cold floor facing the ceiling.
She had tried, but for the life of her, 2847 just couldn't sleep. She was too worried about what tomorrow would bring, and asking herself the same question over and over: "Why? Why am I here?"
After what seemed like an eternity, the cell door clanged. 2847 shot up into a standing position. Standing in the doorway were the two guards, as well as the Ventrexian.
He took a step towards her, causing her to step back. He smiled sadly and reached out his hand.
"It's alright," his soft, deep voice stated, "You can trust me. I'm not gonna let anything else bad happen to you."
2847 looked at him shyly, "W-will you promise?"
"Yeah. I promise."
2847 stayed where she was for a few moments, trying to figure out if he was lying. When she was satisfied with the strong feeling he wasn't, she walked towards him.
As she hesitantly placed her small hand in his, her nerves calmed.
The Ventrexian's smile brightened, "Come on, kid."
He was going to take his hand from hers as he moved o , but 2847's grip tightened, quickly moving closer to him.
He chuckled as they made their way out of the cell, "Name's Avocato. You got a name besides 'Subject 2847'?"
2847 shook her head.
"Hm. Figured as much." He looked down, smiling as he felt her relax, "What do you think of Lucky?"
2847 looked up, her left eye still half closed, and nodded, "I like that."
"Well. Lucky it is, then," he said as he faced the path again.
Avocato watched humorously as Lucky sco ed down her third plate of food like a starving animal.
"How old are you," he asked.
She paused, looked up, shrugged, then continued eating.
"Uh… favorite colour?"
Lucky swallowed and thought for a moment. Her eyes brightened when she figured out her answer.
"Cyan," she chirped happily before returning to her food.
Avocato nodded.
"Well, well, well," a voice sneered from beside him, "Whatta we got here, Avocato?"
Lucky stopped eating, gulping down her mouthful. Her ears flattened nervously, seeing a great yellow coloured being standing at the edge of the table.
"What do you want, Terk," Avocato spat.
Terk smirked, looking down at Lucky, "Just checking out the newbie."
Lucky could feel anger rage through Avocato. Feeling a heavy weight on her shoulder, she barked aggressively. She wheeled her head around and briefly bit down.
Terk yelped in pain, yanking his hand away. He glared down at Lucky, her fur along her spine raised.
Avocato burst out laughing as Terk cradled his bleeding hand.
"Why, you little…"
Terk raised his hand at Lucky, getting ready to strike.
Avocato looked down at her clenched fist as the electricity in the air shifted. Her once magenta eyes now glowed an electric blue, small bolts of energy streamed from the outer corners.
As Terk's hand came closer to her, Lucky simply flicked him. Electric energy erupted from her fingers, causing the lights to turn o .
Terk's whole body flashed as he flew backwards. Avocato was sure he saw Terk's skeleton for a brief moment.
CRASH!
The place - and Lucky - snapped back to normality.
Avocato's jaw dropped. He turned his attention to Lucky as she let out an irritated snort.
"What the? How did you? How did you do that," he questioned, awfully confused and curious.
Lucky shrugged, "I don't know. It's just… something I'm able to do."
"Well, what else can you do?"
"I can control fire and move things with my mind," she replied, "Though, I'm still learning the last one."
Avocato chuckled, impressed, "Okay, then! Remind me not to get on your bad side!"
"Speaking of 'bad side'," he added, "Best we get out of here."
Avocato opened a metal door.
"Welcome to your new home," he said.
Lucky walked in, her eyes widening.
The room was fairly small, having a bed and 4-seater couch. A small set of shelves occupied one of the walls. On the wall opposite those was a small fridge.
"It's pretty small, but…"
Avocato stopped as Lucky ran over to the couch. She flopped on the couch and grabbed one of the dark blue cushions. A smile spread on her face. Her tail thumped on the grey couch as she hugged the cushion tightly.
Avocato couldn't help but laugh as he shut the door. As he walked passed, Lucky propped herself up on the back of the couch. She watched him with a small smile as he grabbed a small box from one of the shelves.
"It was you, wasn't it?"
Avocato raised his brows in confusion, walking to the front, "What do you mean?"
"Who saved me," she replied, turning to face him, "You're the one who got me from space."
"You're pretty smart, I'll give you that. But, I'm not sure 'saved' is the right word."
Lucky sat Indian-style with her long legs crossed. She smiled, "Well, sure it is. If you hadn't come along, I probably wouldn't be living!"
"And if I hadn't come along, you wouldn't be stuck here with a bung eye."
Lucky's smile faded. She turned her eyes to the floor, her ears drooping. "I wouldn't worry about that," she whispered, "I've had a lot worse…"
Avocato sighed. He opened the box, showing the medical stu inside. He grabbed the little bag of alcohol wipes.
"Now. This is going to hurt, but I need you to stay still. Okay?"
Lucky faced him again and nodded.
Avocato gently placed the wipe on the wound. Lucky hissed, fighting the urge to pull away. He carefully cleaned it, then got up to put the rubbish in the bin.
"How was that," he asked, kneeling in front of her again.
Lucky's brows creased, "My face feels numb."
"That's normal. Especially for something as deep as that."
"Is there," she paused to yawn, "Anything else?"
"Unfortunately, yes. It needs stitching."
Lucky gulped nervously, "Does that involve… needles?"
Avocato paused. He was about to grab the needle and thread, but changed his mind.
"Nah," he replied, grabbing the strips and glue, "I'll see if this works first."
Lucky sighed in relief, visibly relaxing.
For the rest, Lucky had sat perfectly still. Once it was finished, Avocato had put the box back and sat with her on the couch.
"Am I sleeping here," Lucky asked.
Avocato thought for a few moments before replying, "How about we take turns? I'll sleep here tonight, then you'll sleep here tomorrow. Sound like a plan?"
Lucky nodded her head happily as she yawned.
He chuckled, "By the looks of it, you need to get to sleep."
Lucky nodded again and got up. Taking the cushion she was still hugging, she fell onto the bed. Moving the blankets with her mind, she covered herself. She snuggled into the pillow.
"Night, Avocato," she whispered tiredly.
A small smile crossed Avocato's face.
"Good night, Lucky."
