A Peace Meeting
It was past midnight. Hiccup was sleeping peacefully in his bedroom up above. His parents were having a lecture admits one another.
"I didn't mean to hurt him Valka. But how is he supposed to be a guardian or more importantly the next chief if he can't even defend himself?"
"You're always so hard on him. Just give him time,"
"Time?! He's fifteen Valka!" Stoick's body with quivering with panic. "He can't always rely on others to help him!"
"You never should have put Spitelout against him,"
"I didn't mean to do it. It's not my fault my brother doesn't respect our son,"
Valka just crossed his arms and rubbed her eyebrows. "Stoick…there's something else we should discuss about,"
"Oh, please not about the idea of making peace with the other clans," her husband slouched in his chair rubbing the cycles under his eyes.
"Stoick…it's only a matter of time before our clans tear each other apart. Do you really want our son to live in this type of world?"
Stoick, stubborn as always, sighed, hanging his head down.
"Have you always wondered about the prophecy?"
"That's just an old Viking legend,"
"It's not just an old legend. I believe it refers to Hiccup. I took him to the Dragon Gem's cave. He heard the spirit of Toothless communicating to him. Nothing like that has happened to anyone before. And don't you remember what's so special about his birthday?"
"Valka…there is no hope that the Night Furies will return. Hiccup is safe!"
"If our clans don't learn to trust one another again, this archipelago will become an ongoing battlefield of both land and sky until there's none of us left. And once they find out about Hiccup's connection to the last night fury, what do you think they'll do to him?"
"Then we make sure that never happens. Nothing will happen to Hiccup. So as long as no one finds out,"
"Stoick! You know that's not possible! This is a legend that has passed downed to everyone in this world since the beginning of dragons! One day the last Night fury will be found and once it does, it will find the human with home it shall form the first bond. I am convinced more than ever that it is with our son. You know the signs Stoick,"
Stoick wanted to talk back. No words came out. He rubbed his creased forehead. "Then what are we to do?"
"Do you want your son safe? Do you want him to grow up and become a chief to lead in a better world?"
Stock stared up at her with wet eyes. "Of course I do,"
"Then we must take the first step,"
"Woah, woah, woah…" Hiccup interrupted. "You're saying you invited our enemies over for a feast?!" already he was against the idea.
"Hiccup let me tell you something," Valka sat him down. "Five hundred years, our clans were once unified harmonious as one!"
"But that's ancient history mother," he said. "The five clans have been at war with one another for centuries since the Darkgon's defeat,"
"Only because they believe the Dragon Gem gives us peace and prosperity. We assume things about them. I want you to live in a world where you're safe and living in prosperity. And the legend I told has been passed down for generations in every clan in the archipelago. People have a way of knowing who they talk about,"
"You think they're goanna think that a runt like me is this guy from this prophecy? It can't be me. Since when did you start believing that?"
"From the moment you were born. There's something I've never told you Hiccup. About your birthday. You were born on the night of the Dragon Moon, the event under which Toothless used the Dragon Gem to defeat the Darkgons. For a long time, I've believed that that makes you worthy of prophecy. Since seeing you hear Toothless's voice inside that gem, I am now convinced more than ever that you're the one,"
Everything that Hiccup was hearing seemed to make his mind more unsettled. He was speechless, flabbergasted, sick to the core with this revelation. He wanted to argue. No words came out.
"We kept it secret from you to protect you. Now that you're old enough to know, you're old enough to realise how much we need to bring peace between these five lands. As long as we are at constant war with them, you are not safe. I believe we can a unity again. But someone must take the first step,"
Hiccup allowed his mother's words to flow through his mind like rivers of knowledge. He didn't know what to say. He had never ever thought in his life that there was a part of him that was special. He felt his birth date did not make him special. He remained speechless.
"Trust me,"
Valka's kind voice lifted Hiccup's spirit a bit. He managed a smile. He looked out into the distance wondering how this was going to turn out.
Hours later, herds of dragons from afar were seen beyond the horizon. They were split into four groups: the Outcasts, the Berserkers, the Defenders of the Wing and the Wingmaidens each with their own unique types of dragons.
Hiccup was dressed up in his best green noble garments. He stood at the front between his parents, though he stuck closer to Valka's side. Stoick noticed and looked sad.
"I'm really nervous mum," Hiccup confessed.
"It'll be fine Hiccup. All you have to do is be yourself. You have a strong and courageous heart,"
He looked into her face and saw confidence aimed right at him. "Okay,"
Stoick wanted to say something but couldn't. The horn blew and he coughed his throat and stood up straight. They turned towards the approaching crowd split up into four groups. The Outcasts wore silver armour with giant helmets. Their leader Alvin had a bushy beard and bushy hair. Their dragons were Monstrous Nightmares and Whispering Deaths.
The Defenders of the Wing wore only black. Their leader Mala had golden outlines around her black royal outfit, and she was the only Defender whose face and hair was concealed by a dark mask. Only showing their eyes to the public, the Defenders frowned at all those who weren't part of their clan. Behind them was a giant Eruptodon and a herd of Gronkles.
The Wingmaidens didn't ride on dragons. Instead, they wore baby Razorwhips on their backs to lift them up into the air. They wore silver armour to match their dragons of status and they carried spears. Atali, with strawberry blonde hair tucked behind a silver and bronze circlet, carried a sharp spear. Although motherly with her Razorwhip, she remained disdainful of the huge companies of men surrounding her and her clan who were only females.
And finally, the Berserkers wore purple clothes with silver outlines. Their main dragons were Skrills. Their leader Oswald seemed the more peaceful out the four leaders. Beside him was a young boy with orange hair.
Stoick looked nervous when he saw all their enemies all here together. They didn't seem the least pleased. They were on guard with all their weapons. Already the atmosphere was tense and awkward.
"Things look a little tense Val," he spoke over to his wife.
"You know why this is necessary Stoick," she reminded him. He remained still. "Are you seriously going to keep standing there?"
"Mmm?" Stoick was shaken out of his train of thought. "Oh yeah. Yeah sure," he rotated round to all his agitated and uncomfortable men. "You all know why we're here everyone. No fighting anyone. Understood,"
They bowed and they nodded. Stoick however frowned when he saw that his brother Spitelout was frowning. He frowned back. He turned his attention back to the crowd and cleared his throat.
"Welcome fellow clans. We welcome you the Outcasts, the Defenders of the Wings, the Wingmaidens and the Berserkers to the isle of Berk. For five hundred years we have been enemies. But now we have change to unite our clans to live in harmony once again. I have invited you all here….to…to make peace. We can be unified,"
Everything was quiet. That was when a cackle rose into the air. "Nice try Stoick!" the outcast chief bellowed. "Why have you really brought us here?! To rob us?!"
Stoick was about to lash out when Valka grabbed his shoulder, gesturing him to calm down.
"That is not why we have invited you all here!" she spoke up, doing her best to keep everything calm. "We've invited you all here to unite!"
"To unite?!" Atali demanded. "How do we know you won't steal our baby dragons?"
"And why would Berk with his hairy hooligans want to unite when it has the most powerful object in all the lands?!" Mala demanded. "We know you smelly Hooligans use the Dragon Gem to bring fertility to your island!"
"That is not true!" Stoick spoke up. "We protect the Dragon Gem!"
"From us?!"
Already three of the clans were getting into an argument.
"This was pointless Stoick!" Spitelout shouted from behind. "We told you it was useless inviting our enemies to our home! Who knows what they might be doing?!"
This only made the situation worse. The three clans started accusing Stoick of leading them onto Berk to harm them. Valka frowned at Spitelout for making things worse.
"Guys! Come on!" Valka pleaded, sparking everyone's attention. "Are we really going to start fighting like this when we haven't got to know each other?!"
"Anyone hungry?!" Hiccup held up a bowl of chicken bites. "We have a special feast prepared for everyone!"
No one said anything. He noticed the Berserkers still hadn't done or said anything. He walked down awkwardly offering a meal to the chief.
"Would you like anything chief Oswald?"
Oswald didn't frown but he remained unmoved.
"Come on dad!" the boy next to him said angrily. "He's only offering you some food," when his father didn't make a move, he stepped forward. HE tried some of the chicken bites. "Mmm!" he marvelled at the taste. "These are so good! You must try one father!"
He implored his father to try. Oswald gave it a try and went 'mmm'. "These are delicious! Forgive my rude manners…" he drifted off asking for a name.
"Hiccup," Hiccup answered.
Nearly everyone burst out into peals of laughter. Even most of the Berkians burst out laughing too when they saw how funny they found Hiccup's name.
"Hey! Stop that!" Oswald's heir shouted. Everyone silenced. "Is that really how you treat a host? How dare you?! All he did was just offer you a feast?!"
Everyone held regretful faces.
"So are we going to have a feast together?" Valka asked again.
Taking careful glances at one another, the four clans reluctantly nodded, and they stepped forward. Valka smiled a little though Stoick remained a little agitated. They turned and they started leading their large number of guests towards the great hall. Hiccup followed them a quite a distance. He noticed the Berserker heir who had stood up to him walking right near him.
"Hey. Ahh…" he sounded awkward. "Thank you…for sticking up for me and for being the first one to accept my island's hospitality,"
"No problem," he said. "It's just like your mum said. We shouldn't judge people before we get to know them. Name's Dagur,"
"Dagur…mmm. What an interesting name,"
"Tell me Hiccup. Are you a fan of night furies?"
"Yes. I quite love those dragons,"
