Bella's dream that helps her figure out Jake is a wolf is taken directly from NM chapter 12. I really like that her dreams were so important in canon and will be trying to do some other things with them too. Also I'm using it because her nightmares and other issues stemming from Edward leaving were really brushed aside and I'm not doing that either.

CHAPTER 3

My dream that night was different than usual. I realized it was the same dream I had over a year ago on the first night I knew Edward was a vampire. It started the same way at least, I was in the woods near the beach with Jacob when suddenly the dream changed…

"Jacob dropped my hand and yelped. Shaking and twitching, he fell to the ground at my feet.

'Jacob!' I screamed, but he was gone.

In his place was an enormous, red-brown wolf with dark, intelligent eyes.

The dream veered off course, like a train jumping the tracks.

This was not the wolf that I'd dreamed of in another life. This was the great russet wolf I'd stood half a foot from in the meadow, …

This wolf stared intently at me, trying to convey something vital with his intelligent eyes.

The black-brown familiar eyes of Jacob Black.

I woke up screaming at the top of my lungs." (New Moon, google edition pages 197-198)

Alice wrapped her arms around me and mumbled words I couldn't understand, desperately trying to soothe me. My breathing was still erratic and I buried my face in my blankets in case I had to muffle more screams. I felt a breeze from the window and then Jasper's larger hands replaced Alice's tiny ones on my shoulders as he pushed as much calm as possible at me. Finally I could breathe easily again and I pulled the blanket away to look at my friend's distressed faces.

I didn't say anything for another minute. My body was calm now but my mind was still spinning out of control with questions and memories of the stories Jacob had told me on the beach. The first story of the Quileutes being descended from wolves and could even take their forms. But changing from human to a wolf would mean they're... "Werewolves" I finally gasped, "that's what Jake wanted me to figure out."

"The nightmare? You dreamed about the werewolves? No wonder you were screaming. I can't believe Charlie didn't come in." Alice whispered and moved up to hug me again as Jasper stepped back.

"He doesn't come in anymore," I admitted as I pulled the blanket between me and Alice's cold body. I probably shouldn't have said that but between Jasper's calm cloud and my exhaustion it took too much effort to filter my thoughts much.

"What do you mean anymore?" she asked, "how long has this been happening?

I sighed and closed my eyes. "Since you left," I whispered, my voice was so quiet I could barely hear it. "It was a different dream tonight though." I didn't exactly want to discuss my nightmares when I had to go back to sleep.

Alice gasped, "oh Bella, we're so sorry. We're all coming back, we shouldn't have left. It'll get better now. You'll see." She said quickly.

I just hummed in response and kept my eyes closed. Sure, they'll all be back but Edward still doesn't want me. They're all going to have to leave me again soon. I have no idea how I will be able to face him and I couldn't even think of hearing him say those words again. I definitely wouldn't survive it a second time. I forced myself to stop thinking about vampires and werewolves and the things they say. I pulled my arms and the blankets tighter against the hole in my chest and went back to sleep.

The next morning I woke up with Alice at the foot of my bed and no Jasper in sight. I slept a little later than usual and Alice noticed me look towards my window. "He left to start getting the house ready for everyone," she explained. "We called them last night after you went to sleep. They'll be here tomorrow night." She hesitated for a moment. "But Edward hasn't responded yet."

I winced at his name and nodded. I guess that was to be expected about him since he was off alone. I forced the thought away and focused on how happy I would be to see the rest of them. "That's good about everyone else though. I'm excited to see them."

"They're excited to see you too. And Carlisle said we should tell you about our treaty with the Quileutes. So you figured out their wolves and basically we won't hurt any humans or go on their land and neither side will reveal what any of us really are."

I nodded. I vaguely remembered Jake calling me a pale face as he told me the keeping secrets part but he had thought it was just a made up story at the time.

"So that's why we didn't just tell you last night. Plus my visions were spotty but I could see you would figure it out somehow. I wish we could have done without the screaming though." she shook her head with a slight frown. "I still have a few blank spots in my visions today, especially where you're concerned." She surveyed me with narrowed eyes like I might disappear right then.

"I need to go to La Push. Jacob said to go talk to him when I figured it out," I said with a shrug.

"That's what I thought!" Alice shouted, "the wolves are creating these blank spots. When they chased Laurent in the meadow I couldn't see you anymore and last night in the woods I could barely see anything until we were all going back inside. And now I see you leaving today and then coming home but nothing in between!" She was practically bouncing with this new information.

"Well, I'm glad you figured that out." I smiled at her energy. "I'm guessing Charlie is gone since you're shouting."

"Yes he went to La Push fishing again. I can barely see him right now." She sounded a little frustrated at that. "He left you a note reminding you he will bring us pizza for dinner tonight so you don't have to cook."

"Okay I still need to see Jake, but I'll be back before Charlie comes with dinner." My dream reminded me of the stories but I still needed the details filled in. Like how he was able to be a wolf in broad daylight and somehow managed to chase a vampire down and kill him...

"I can see that I can't stop you Bella, so please be careful. We can't go there and he wasn't lying when he said it wasn't safe last night."

"Jacob would never hurt me Alice, he's my friend."

"Of course he wouldn't intentionally hurt you, but accidents happen so just please be careful. I'm already going to be so worried about you since I won't have any visions." She was practically begging now. "If he starts to get angry you need to back away from him. Give him as much space as you possibly can."

I remembered Jake's trembling arms from last night and Jasper's warning not to get any closer. That at least made a little more sense now.

"Okay fine, I'll try," I agreed. I knew Jacob wouldn't do anything like she was imagining but I also didn't want her to worry about me.

"Good, I will leave mine and Jasper's phone numbers for you so you can call me when you get back home and then I will come and talk to Charlie and pretend to eat pizza," Alice said much more cheerfully.

"Have you thought about what to say about all of you coming back? I don't want him to be angry."

"Yes, it will be better to wait a few more days. Tonight we'll just tell him we are having a girls night and catching up. Then I will 'go home'" she said with finger quotes, "for a couple days and come back and tell him we are all moving back here. Then we will have Carlisle and Esme talk to him too and smooth over the details."

I nodded slowly, that made sense, as the parental figures they would be more convincing.

"I'll leave after you eat breakfast so you can go talk to Jacob." She threw some clean clothes at me. "I hate that you disappear when you get to La Push though," she frowned.

"I'll be fine Alice," I promised. Just going to hang out with my other best friend who is also a supernatural creature. I smiled a little at how crazy that would sound if I said it out loud to anyone else.

When did my life get so strange?

I spent the drive to La Push going over everything I remembered Jake telling me last year again. I remember he said his own great grandfather was supposedly one of the wolf protectors and made a treaty with a group of the "cold ones" because they were different. That group was of course the Cullens and that's the part I was so focused on last year but now the wolf part was true too.

I pulled up to the little red house and Jake came out the door still shoving a piece of toast in his mouth.

"You came!" He looked so relieved. "Did you remember? Did you figure it out?" he rushed up and hugged me tightly. His skin felt unreasonably warm even through my jacket.

"I did," I replied, "and I can't breathe."

He set me down and took a few steps back. "You know now! The other guys probably aren't going to like this, but since you figured it out there's nothing they can do." His smile looking like the old sunny Jacob again.

"Why won't they like it?" I asked. "We can figure something out Jake, I won't let you ignore me again."

He started toward the beach and I followed his lead. We kept a bit more distance between us than we used to. "Definitely not ignoring you but it's still not entirely safe to be around me. Phasing can be dangerous until we can control it. Although I seem to be doing better than most of the others so early on. Which will make being able to see you much easier." He finished with a huge grin at me.

"Okay slow down. Barely any of that made any sense Jake. I came here with a bunch of questions about this whole secret wolf gang you're in and you just gave me a bunch more." I shook my head, this was still very weird.

"Yeah, so first of all not a gang, we're a pack," he said matter of factly. "And phasing is what we call changing from wolf to human and back again. I phased for the first time about two weeks ago. When we went to the movies and I felt sick," I nodded remembering at least that much of his story. "I was even worse by the time I finally got home. My dad said I looked awful and I just exploded. That was it, I could have seriously hurt him just because of one little comment."

"That's terrible Jacob." I guess it really was easy for them to get angry and phase.

"I had to ignore you because it wasn't safe for anyone besides the other guys while I adjusted to phasing and plus we're not allowed to tell anyone. My dad only knows because he's a tribe elder."

"And you turned into a giant wolf in front of him the first time," I reminded him.

"True," he agreed and then shook his head. "You're taking this surprisingly well."

"I am pretty understanding about weird stuff but I'm not entirely sure about that," I said and shook my head too. "The past twenty-four hours might catch up to me in a big way pretty soon."

"That's possible too I suppose," Jake answered studying me. "It has been pretty crazy this weekend. I was outside your house last night because I wanted to protect you, you know."

I felt a little sheepish over how I had yelled at him last night. "I was very surprised you were there since you've been completely avoiding me. And Billy was giving me excuses or not answering my calls at all. At least I know why now."

"I know, I really didn't have much choice but it'll be better now, I promise," he said sincerely.

I just nodded as we sat down on opposite ends of a log and were silent for a minute.

"What else do you want to know? Now that I can talk about it this is great." He looked so excited.

"Why couldn't you just tell me, since I already knew?"

"I physically couldn't tell you no matter how much I wanted to. Sam is the alpha and ordered us all to secrecy about it."

"Alice and Jasper wouldn't tell me until I figured it out either. She said it was because of the treaty."

"Well at least they respect something." Jacob grumbled as he crossed his arms.

I changed the subject away from the Cullens. "You killed Laurent yesterday."

"That was that blood suckers name?" He narrowed his eyes a little, "you looked like you knew him so we debated whether he was with Cullens or not. But when he was going to kill you, we had to attack. I hope he wasn't a friend."

"No Jake," I waved my hand to dismiss the thought. "You definitely saved me, thank you."

"Good. If he was with the Cullens we would have had a problem. They're supposed to bite a human before we can attack them."

"Well I'm very glad you didn't wait then." I shuddered and decided to continue avoiding the subject of the Cullens.

"Me too."

"For the record, red eyes mean they drink human blood and golden eyes mean they drink animal blood, so they're the good ones," I informed him.

"Sure sure, pay attention to the eyes of the leeches," he said as he shook his head.

I decided to ignore that last comment and changed the subject again. "So what else is there about being a werewolf? And why isn't it the full moon when you become one?"

He laughed, "the full moon is just a myth Bella, tribe legends say we phase whenever we need to protect humans from the cold ones."

"Is everything a myth about every supernatural creature?" I sighed. We were getting back into extremely weird territory.

Jake shrugged and laughed. "I don't know, but the best thing about it is the speed, we can run really fast it's so cool."

"I see." I should have guessed as much since they were able to chase down a vampire. The thought of Victoria being out to get me suddenly popped into my head again.

"The missing hikers and the bear sightings?" I started, "Are those because of you?"

"The bears are us yeah," he grimaced. "The missing hikers are because of the two bloodsuckers. Though we got the one yesterday, there's another one with red hair that's been around. We can't figure out why, but when she finds her mate dead Sam thinks she'll take more chances and slip up."

"Victoria," I shivered as I explained. "Laurent wasn't her mate, James was. The Cullens killed him last year because he wanted to kill me. Remember when I got hurt in Phoenix?" He nodded and I could tell he was trying to stay calm. "That's why I left and Edward barely saved me in time." I traced the scar on my wrist from his bite mark and wrapped my arms around myself like I always did when I thought of him.

"Jesus Bella, he got that close?" Jake's eyes were wide with disbelief when he noticed the scar.

"Yeah," I nodded slowly, "so Victoria, the red head, is after me because Edward killed her mate so she wants to kill his. That's what Laurent told me yesterday." I winced at his name and realised this whole thing was ridiculous because Edward didn't even want me as his mate anymore.

"We should go tell Sam and the others. Now that we know what she wants we can coordinate better." He stood up. "We won't let her get to you Bella, I swear."

I got up too. I didn't need to leave yet but if he was going to tell the other wolves I should probably not be around.

"Come on, I'll grab Sam at his house so he can call a pack meeting. You can meet him and Emily too."

We went back to his house to grab my truck and then drove over to Sam's.

"Stay by the truck for a minute while I explain to Sam that you know about us and try not to stare at Emily when you meet her. Okay?"

"Okay," I agreed. I hoped he wouldn't get too mad at Jake for me knowing about them.

We got out and Jake went to the door. He knocked at the same time he yelled, "Sam, get out here! I've got new intel." He grinned back at me because I was the source of this 'intel' like some kind of bad spy movie. I bit my lip to keep myself from laughing.

Sam came outside then and Jake stepped back onto the porch. Sam glared between Jake and I for a second before he spoke. "She's not supposed to be here Jake. What were you thinking?"

"I made her a promise. And I didn't tell her, she figured it out from what she already knew about the legends." Jake hurried to explain himself. I suppressed another smile because he in fact had told me a year ago, before he knew it was a big secret to keep.

"Fine," Sam finally said, "what is this new information you have to tell me."

"The red head we've been chasing is after Bella." Jake gestured to me as he spoke. "She wants her because the Cullens killed her mate last year."

Sam frowned. "Well, that definitely changes things, come inside and we'll talk more before we call a meeting with everyone." He turned to go back inside.

Jake pulled me up the porch to follow him in. Sam was now sitting at the small circular table in the kitchen with his arm around a woman with three deep scars running down the side of her face and neck. So that's why I was warned not to stare.

"Bella, this is Emily and Sam. Emily and Sam, Bella." Jake introduced us as he sat down on the other side of Sam.

"Hello," I squeaked and sat next to Jake.

"So you figured out a way around Sam's order?" Emily asked Jake.

"She figured it out. She already knew about the vampires." Jake waved his hands in my direction.

Emily and Sam both nodded. "I guess it wasn't too hard to put together then," Emily said with a small smile.

"Not after yesterday," Sam agreed.

I blushed at the memory. "Thank you for that." I looked between Jake and Sam. "For saving me, you didn't have to."

"We did actually. It's our main job to protect humans from vampires Bella," Sam answered. He didn't look as intimidating now as when I used to see him outside with the others in the pack.

"Okay," I nodded, unsure of what else to say.

Jake jumped in the conversation, "So its like I said Sam the red head-"

"Victoria," I supplied.

"Yeah, what she wants is Bella so we need to change our patrols to be closer around her house." Jake exclaimed.

"Of course," Sam looked thoughtful. "What about the two Cullens that are back, if they're staying we can't be on their territory." He looked at me for an answer.

"The Cullens are coming back. They want to stop Victoria too," I said hesitantly.

"What?" Jake yelled, startling me. His hands were in tight fists on the table top but at least they weren't shaking like last night.

Careful Bella, don't say anything else yet. Edward's voice was suddenly in my head and I just sat there stunned.

Jake calmed himself again and looked at me with the same hurt expression I saw last night in the woods. I knew bringing them up would be a bad idea.

"Well I guess we can't exactly stop them." Sam said with a pointed look at Jacob. "Can you tell them that the treaty is still the same."

"Sure," I agreed right away. I'd get more of the treaty details out of Alice later if I needed to.

"Well I guess that's it. We need to meet with the rest of the pack Jake."

"I was going to ride home with Bella, just in case," Jake said.

"I don't need an escort Jake, and you shouldn't be coming back alone." I began to defend myself but then remembered Victoria could be lurking anywhere and how panicked I was yesterday.

"Yes you do Bells, I'll ride with you in the truck and then phase and run back," he said, "it'll be fine and we can be sure you're safe."

"Fine, lets go." I would still worry about Jake but I knew he would worry about me too.

As I started driving Jake told me that Emily was Sam's fiancée and her scars were from an accident when he was still new to phasing and she was unfortunately too close one day.

"Accidents happen," I repeated Alice's words from earlier. "Phone calls are still safe Jake, you better return mine from now on," I warned him again.

"I know, I know," he waved me off and then grinned his wonderful sunny smile. "I'm so happy to have you back Bells, and I have no reason to do that again. Have I mentioned how happy I am that you figured it out so quickly?"

"Yeah once or twice so far," I laughed at him.

When we were almost to my house he brought up the Cullens again but I was still careful about what I said about them. I was still wrapping my head around the fact that he knew their secret too.

"They think they can just come back like nothing ever happened? And you're just going to take them back?"

I stopped him from saying anything else. "It's exactly like I told you last night Jake it's my decision."

He scoffed one last time and grumbled something under his breath but we rode the rest of the way in silence.

A/N This story is beta-read by russianred and a couple other friends who do not have accounts here for me to credit but I am grateful to them anyway.

We're three chapters in and Bella got to see Jake again. Just letting everyone know now that I despise love triangles so that will not be happening. Let me know what you think so far!
