Okay, this can be ignored by all but a certain user that decided that, after I got irritated at their willful ignorance of Sora's perspective, decided to block me.
You are literally ignoring the fact that Sora doesn't know this fucking world. Just...ugh, just fuck it. People make assumptions, and if you want to ignore the fact that she is obviously biased and keep pushing your own perspective, fine, but getting angry and blocking me because I told you that you can literally go read any other damn story if you don't like how Sora is written as a flawed character is just...whatever. Not naming names so I don't start a witchhunt, but you know who you are.
And, again, just so you really get the message: There are 434,000 other Naruto fanfictions you can go and read.
Chapter 3
As the students filed out of the academy and towards the fighting arena, Sora trailed along near the back of the group, her mind working feverishly.
Sora from before had the same attitude as she would have, of not really getting involved with the other students, and while that was good for avoiding dealing with annoying brats, it meant that she wasn't likely to be able to approach anybody and get them to work with her. If she came up out of nowhere and told them what to do, they'd probably tell her to shove it. That meant her plan to get the groups of students fighting was out the window.
And, unfortunately, she couldn't really think of any other way to incite that conflict and also distract Karatachi-san long enough to land a hit. All it had to be was a clean hit, so a senbon or kunai to the flak vest she was wearing would definitely count, but all she had available to her was the basic academy techniques and her Iryojutsu. While powerful in regards to being able to modify internals, it required direct contact, and could easily be shaken off by circulating chakra in the same way that Shinobi dispelled Genjutsu. Iryojutsu required stability, so chaotic Chakra would completely ruin the technique.
Besides, getting direct contact on Karatachi-san meant she'd be better served just directly stabbing her with a weapon. Doing any kind of Jutsu bullshit wouldn't matter if she could land a clean and undeniable stab on her. Of course, she'd have to get to point-blank range to do that, which meant she'd probably be on the ground in an instant without even getting a weapon close to her.
So, that just left ranged attacks. She had a pair of Kunai and three Senbon, so she really couldn't afford to just throw them around haphazardly. If she threw one, she could expect to not be able to get it back, so it would need to be absolutely necessary. Sora hummed as she tried to piece together a new plan which would let her at least do one of her quests if not the other. It wouldn't be the end of the world to fail one of them, but it would be irritating.
Failing to get even a modicum of a victory over Karatachi-san would be annoying, but there was no punishment, and the other quest gave her leeway and she guessed at having a few weeks before any sort of conflict actually kicked off, so even if she couldn't incite a battle between students here, she had time to find other ways to satisfy that quest. But it would definitely be a feather in her cap if she could manage to do her first two quests simultaneously somehow.
Then it smacked her in the face. She could use a clone, disguise it with a henge and have it appear to almost maliciously miss an attack that would hit one of the other students, then act like it was just normal that a plebian like whoever was hit should take what they are given. Que angry arguing and have her clone slip in amongst the group. The confusion and the anger would stop level heads from prevailing and would lead to a ton of infighting. Karatachi-san would probably be at least a little confused when all the students started fighting and wouldn't quite be sure of what to do, or would either intervene, or watch with amusement, and that would be just the slightest bit of an opening for her to attack.
But then...was it her that needed to land the attack? It implied it, but the quest did just say to land a clean hit on her, not that it had to be Sora specifically that did it. As long as someone managed to land a hit, in her mind that meant she could claim to have assisted and get at least partial credit, thus satisfying the condition. Likely not, but it was nice to hope.
Coming up to the fighting arena, Sora was the first to see Karatachi-san with her Byakugan, who was in the process of limbering up, and though she'd vehemently deny it to any who asked, she watched her with a certain amount of awe. It wasn't every day you got to see someone who excelled so much at killing people after all. All the more reason for her to really want to land a hit on her. Getting a personal interest from someone so powerful, while a risky venture, had the potential to pay dividends.
Of course, she kept those thoughts hidden from her face, her normal unamused and uncaring face on display as she trailed along at the rear of the group, appearing to not give a damn about the entire situation. Inwardly, she was already piecing together who she would copy, who to attack, how to disguise it best, where to be when the fighting kicked off, and how exactly to best leverage the engineered situation to her advantage.
It strained her mind a bit thinking about so much information and how best to use it, especially since she was usually a pretty direct person, but this was necessary to her future. If this went well, she'd level up at least once, perhaps even two or three times, as well as dictating exactly how her future was going to go, so it was most definitely worth it to put in maximum effort.
The best target to copy would be one of the snottier kids, the clan kids who had no bloodline and thus were higher in Kirigakure's hierarchy and looked down on the others. She would make a clone of one of them using the henge, then hit one of the bloodline kids. When confronted her clone would be aggressive, say something provocative, then when attacked would avoid it, strike back, then make a visible sign of using the replacement technique before disappearing in a puff of smoke.
This would make it look like the clan kid hit them, didn't care, and was fully willing to fight but ran away like a coward after getting one good hit in. She might need to on-the-fly mess with them in different ways, but this should hopefully spark other kids to get involved and spiral the entire thing out of control and into an all-out brawl. Then all she had to do was get the drop on Karatachi-san while she was distracted by the sudden infighting and she'd be golden.
Her plan cemented in her mind, Sora came to a stop at the back of the crowd, listening as their teacher told them the rules, what was and wasn't allowed, all that kind of thing that they all already knew. In this fight, they were allowed to use as much force as they could bring to bear, the underlying message being that they were brats who couldn't bring enough force together collectively to hurt their teacher, let alone an experienced and accomplished Hunter-nin.
He then gave them a minute to find a position to start off from, and immediately the class split into multiple groups, the three blocs of students being the largest, then the smaller scattered groups of friends or loners, including herself. She eyed the clan kids, eventually picking one out who was fairly average, the only interesting part of him being the fact that he had pretty nice blue eyes. She could have picked literally any other clan kid, but decided on him simply because she had to choose someone.
Then she selected a bloodline kid to target, settling on one of her original targets, the Yuki kid. He was part of a fairly well known and definitely powerful clan, and an attack on him would be pretty serious, which hopefully would incite the other kids to anger, thus procking the attention of the other clan kids, and the civilian bloc would probably get involved just through spillover fighting. Even if the civvy bloc didn't get involved and focused on Karatachi-san, that was still 2 out of three, which should definitely fulfil her quest requirements.
Sora let a thin smile slip onto her lips as she cemented that plan in place, preparing to use a clone technique followed by a henge. "Is everybody ready?" She glanced at the teacher, who was surveying the entire group of students with something approaching amusement. "Then...begin!" Immediately a good chunk of the class charged towards the visible Hunter-nin, and for a brief moment Sora wondered whether she'd even need her plan, since it looked like some of the kids were going to hit each other deliberately just to get a shot at Karatachi-san.
But, it was better to make sure, so from far back, she used the clone technique, and forced down the involuntary reaction to a perfect clone of herself appearing beside her, instead forming the necessary hand seals to henge the clone into her chosen target. It took her three seconds between casting the clone technique and using the transformation technique, so with 100 chakra drained away and fifteen more, 5 for each second, she was already down by over half her pool, and she'd have just fifteen seconds to perform her plan.
Immediately the clone dashed forwards and she moved to exit the area her clone came from, leaving less tying her to it. She kept her eye out and tracked the black hair as it charged towards the group. Unfortunately, she could already see that her chosen target wasn't available, but that wasn't a big deal really. Her clone switched targets to another, and from her safe-ish position, Sora took out one of her precious senbon.
Relying on the training that Sora from before had undergone to use the weapons, she flicked her arm back them forwards, tossing the small metal spike towards her target. It sheared through the air and slammed into his chest. That wasn't quite where she intended to hit, she wanted to get him in a limb, but it would suffice for her purposes. Her clone came out of the throwing stance it was stood in and made a 'tch' shape with its mouth before looking away.
Sora grinned widely as she saw that the kid she had hit was understandably furious at having just been hit by a senbon, even if it hadn't gone super-deep, and immediately they flicked their hands into several hand seals and formed a large shard of ice. Her clone took note of this, made a suitably surprised and angered face before making a hand seal for the substitution jutsu and dispersing into smoke, leaving the ice-user targetless.
It didn't take them long to acquire the kid she had copied and fired their ice spike at them, getting him in the stomach, nearly in the same spot she had hit him with her senbon. The one who was hit traced the ice back from where it was fired and, rather than being logical and looking at the situation, they themselves got angry and formed the hand seals for a jutsu to fire back.
When a bullet of water fired out and smacked the Yuki kid in the face, leaving a very fast-forming bruise, several of the other clan kids, as she had predicted, leapt to his defence, readying techniques of their own. Smirking, Sora continued on her current path, having been watching as Karatachi-san methodically and rather brutally put down any kid that got near her, leaving a dead space around herself.
Sora used her Byakugan to keep an eye on the brewing infighting between the clan kids and the bloodline kids. Irritatingly enough, the civilian kids were pretty much keeping out of it, they were all trying to fight Karatachi-san and not paying attention to the fighting that was ramping up between the two blocs. The isolated kids were also doing the same, mostly because attracting the attention of either group would end very poorly.
When the kid she cloned ended up impaled through the stomach by another two spikes of ice and collapsed, that was when she realized that maybe she slightly underestimated just how much of a powder keg she had set off. Evidently Karatachi-san had been keeping an eye on the conflict as well, since when that occurred, she immediately ramped up just how brutal and efficient she took the kids down, pushing her way in a matter of moments to the impaled kid.
Once there, she made a clone of herself, which began...actually fighting? That was...the clone technique wasn't a physical clone, if it touched anything with even a little force it would burst into smoke. But this clone was actually beating up anyone who got near, while Karatachi-san herself was examining the wounded kid. "So, anyone here know any medical techniques?"
Sora blinked as she heard Karatachi-san speak for the first time, watching for a few moments as the clone continued to fight any student that tried to attack. Mentally adjusting her plan, she stepped forwards. "I know a little, but I can't maintain the technique for very long." She very quickly found herself face-to-mask with Karatachi-san's clone, which grabbed her and used a jutsu she didn't know to suddenly pull them both to the location of the wounded student and Karatachi-san herself, the real one.
"Heal him." Raising an eyebrow, Sora knelt down, looking at the injury closer up. With her Byakugan she already knew that the ice spikes had perforated his stomach and the acid within was now leaking out and slowly eating at his internals. Shrugging to herself, she looked at Karatachi-san's mask, hiding her amusement as she could see behind her mask that the woman had raised an eyebrow at her.
"We'll have to remove the ice, and probably get a proper healer, he's got stomach acid eating at his insides." Karatachi-san nodded, then grasped hold of one piece of ice and looked at her. "Whenever you're ready." With that, the woman suddenly pulled the piece of ice away, leaving a gaping hole in his belly. Thankfully he was long-since rendered unconscious, otherwise he'd probably be screaming right now. She then swiftly removed the other two, glancing at Sora.
Activating the Mystical Palm Technique, Sora laid her hands upon the edges of the open wound, not caring about the blood or the other contents that messed up her hands as she again drew upon the original Sora's experience using the technique. She meshed that experience with her own somewhat more advanced knowledge of biology to focus on his stomach, pulling together the edges. After just a scant few seconds of healing, the ability puttered out, and she was treated to the sight of rather visible confusion on Karatachi-san's face. "I can't maintain the technique for very long, it's-"
Sora was cut off when the woman reached out to her and put a hand on her shoulder. After a few moments, a feeling like warm water being poured over her shoulder and down towards her chest came across her. Flicking her gaze to the small bars that denoted her health and her chakra levels, she was surprised to see her chakra levels suddenly ascending quite rapidly. She compartmentalized this and instead re-activated the Mystical Palm Technique, going straight back to healing the wounded student.
All while this was going on, she kept an eye on the clone as it beat down the last few belligerent students and went to start to quell the fighting happening between students. It wasn't quite as effective a distraction as she had hoped for, but it had done its job well enough. With the stomach now closed, Sora started to mend the musculature that had been forced away, doing small repair work based on what her Byakugan let her see.
It was amusing to think about just how perfect the Byakugan actually was for a medic. Using it, she could see all the little injuries that the student beneath her hands had attained over his time at the academy, all the little scars and cuts. It also let her see places where fat was building up in his body, places where his bones had been damaged and healed like his knuckles. Quite honestly, it was a more intricate view of the human body than any medical diagram she could have asked for.
Finally, after sealing up his belly, leaving a visible scar for an actually trained medic to go in and fix everything she had done wrong, she looked at her bloodied hands and hummed, eventually just wiping them on his own ruined clothing. He was going to have to get rid of it anyway, and it was pretty well covered in blood, so a bit more didn't matter. The warm feeling she had gotten accustomed to faded as Karatachi-san took her hand away, and Sora saw with her Byakugan as the woman shut her eyes, probably a little tired from doing what she could only call a chakra transferral.
Immediately she whipped out a kunai and, rather than try to throw it and risk failing, she pivoted, lunging forwards. Sora could see, almost inch by inch, as Karatachi-san's eyes opened, apparently sensing, somehow, that something was wrong. But it was too late. Even with her speed and her experience as a Hunter-nin, she couldn't stop Sora's attack from landing. The clone had already whipped around and was heading for them, but it was too far.
Sora slipped the kunai towards Karatachi-san's throat, and brought the weapon to a stop brushing her neck, opening a small cut but not further than that. The clone had stopped as soon as her skin was touched by the blade, probably recognizing what had just occurred. "I think this counts as a win in my book." Sora then rather quickly found herself flipped over and slammed against the ground.
Despite the pain that rippled across her back, it didn't remove the grin from her face.
Okay, maybe she should have thought her plan through better.
At least five students had to see med-nin for serious injuries, the most critical being the one she had healed. One student had outright died after a spike of earth stabbed through their head. Nobody 'knew' it was her that did it, all they knew was that she took advantage of the situation to land an uncontestable 'hit' on Karatachi-san. Nobody was denying that she could have slit her throat if she was an enemy ninja, barring of course the fact it was all a training thing and if Karatachi-san thought she was actually going to cut her throat she would have probably done something drastic.
What confirmed it for her was that her two quests were completed, giving her 4480 experience total as well as the uncommon tanto she was promised, which currently was sitting in her inventory. It had a damage of 35, that was pretty nice all things considered. The 4000 instead of 2000 experience also meant that The Game at least registered that she had landed a clean hit on her, or at least the ability to pivot into one. She didn't want to actually injure Karatachi-san, that wouldn't be the wisest move, so simply slightly cutting her and having her razor-sharp blade against her neck counted towards her bonus objective.
So, all in all, it was a win for her, and a rather significant loss for the class in general. None of the other students had managed to even get close, and while it slightly rankled her pride, Sora knew that without the distraction and the sudden onset exhaustion from draining so much of her chakra, Karatachi-san would have blocked her attack even with her eyes shut and even if her back was turned.
That was one thing she really needed to look into, chakra transferral. It was obviously a draining and very debilitating technique considering how it brought a Hunter-nin to the point that an academy student, albeit a uniquely-advantaged and, dare she say, ruthless one, could beat her, but it could also be useful. Maybe. She wouldn't likely ever use it to help someone else do something, but if she could find a way to turn it from transferral to taking chakra instead, she could drain people and use that to fuel her techniques, like some kind of vampire drain or something.
Shaking her head, she refocused. She had been asked whether she wanted to attempt to replicate taking down a Hunter-nin, and, well, she wasn't an idiot, she said no immediately. The only reason she got her victory was because of multiple overlapping factors. If a Hunter-nin went into a fight with her seriously, she'd have her ass handed to her with ease. No, she turned that 'opportunity' down, and when asked just told them that she was basically forced into the fight, so she decided to make a plan that would result in the best chance for her success.
Apparently not only was that the right thing to say, but it was kinda indicative of what they were actually looking for with the Hunter-nin corps. Hunter-nin sometimes got forced into really bad situations, like how she got forced into the fight, so the fact that she was willing to find a serious plan for success even when it really appeared hopeless that she could even make Karatachi-san blink meant she was definitely in the running for consideration to the Hunter-nin corps, when she had more experience of course. As she was right now, anybody else would chew her to pieces, and the fact she recognized that marked her out as a lot more applicable for the corps than any of the other more bone-headed students.
As it was, the students that were too injured were sent or in some cases taken to the hospital to be treated, and the rest were basically told to roll up their sleeves, wipe off the blood and get back to class. Maybe in the other villages it was different, but in Kiri, survival of the fittest was very applicable. If you weren't tough enough to take what life threw at you, you weren't tough enough to be one of those strong enough to choose their own fate. That was an idea Sora could wholeheartedly get behind.
Amusingly enough, the fact that she had landed a hit on a Hunter-nin didn't really seem to matter much to the students, they left her as isolated as ever, perhaps somehow even more so since she was probably being perceived as having somehow stolen their win. She'd need to keep her Byakugan open just in case some of the students decided that she was getting uppity and they needed to get a little revenge on her, under the guise of teaching her a lesson.
Well, if they wanted to come after her, it just meant she would be able to test whether fighting without killing or permanent maiming would give her experience.
