Chapter 3: Mother Anarchy loves her sons

"Carajo..." Esteban groaned, he slowly got out of bed, his head was hurting. He felt as if someone had drilled into his skull.

'Joder... Last time we felt this shit was after the renovation of El Carmen. We drank like no tomorrow...' His other self said grabbing his head.

'I for once... Agree camarada.' Esteban said. He grabbed the red ball and started bouncing it. He started throwing it against the wall.

'What's our schedule like today camarada?' His other self asked as he sat on his desk.

'Keep looking for an exit. Doubt we will find it today though. Might try to pick the lock from my door and maybe see if I could loop a camera.' Esteban simply stated.

He looked at his clock and saw it was still 4 in the morning. He sat on a chair putting his legs up on the table and kept throwing the ball.

"The horses are covering miles trotting swiftly, For us liberty is precious, Through the slot of the machine gun I'm seeking for the enemy in the dust." He began singing in Ukrainian. A song he had learned from his time in Ukraine. 'Anarchy mom loves her own sons' was maybe one of the most emblematic songs of the anarchist movement a song from the time of the black army.

"Anarchy-mom loves her own sons, Anarchy-mother will not betray, With lead rain she will make blue the enemy, Anarchy-mother for us!" He sang loudly smiling if something could get him in a good mood was singing.

His mood was quickly dampened as he saw a familiar monochrome appear as if out of thin air. He glared daggers at the bear who didn't seem to mind.

"What do you want Monokuma?" Esteban asked acidly the bear tilted its head.

"Why are you so angry at me? Do you not like it here? If not maybe you should murder someone!"

"Never pendejo" Esteban said with dry laughter.

"Come on! You've killed before! What is one more body to the count?" Monokuma asked wabbling to the other seat on the other side of the table and sitting down.

"I kill when necessary not out of some sick pleasure maldito!" Esteban growled. "I know that together we can all escape."

"Ugh your idealism... It's unbearable!" Monokuma said as Esteban groaned at the bad joke. "But... What if someone tries to murder someone else?"

"I know someone will try sooner or later. But I will stop them" Esteban said calmly.

"If you stop them and the others find out... What will they think of that filthy criminal? They might reject them... Try to kill them!" Monokuma argued, Esteban nodded giving the bear reason.

"True but I believe in reformation. Everyone can change."

"Hmm your classmates might not agree! A potential murderer might be too far gone in their opinion!" Monokuma said laughing.

"No one is ever really too far gone." Esteban said with a genuine smile on his face. The bear froze as if trying to process the words.

After a few seconds the bear spoke up. "Even your classmate Togami?" Monokuma asked grinning.

"Yes-" before he could finish he felt his head screaming out in pain.

'No! We both know it ain't true Camarada his other self said.

'It is true... Even the ruling class can be reformed through labor.' Esteban said.

'Ask for work. If they don't give you work, ask for bread. If they do not give you work or bread, then take bread.' His other self said angrily. 'The bourgeoisie murdered our only family. They kill and maim in the name of profit. They all die or the revolution is never secure!'

'I will not fall into the traps of old. If we execute without trial, if we start terror like that... We will end like every revolution, a shadow of their former selves.' His head hurt more as he stumbled out of his seat and tried grabbing onto his self only to fall to the ground.

The ringing got louder as his other self looked at him in disgust. He heard muffled voices, voices that slowly got a bit more clearer.

'Anti revolutionary sentiment will be punished by labor or death.' A voice said.

'You want us to turn into fucking butchers!' Another voice argued.

'The revolution cannot be bloodless. Those who believe that there can be peaceful existence with the statist only need to look how they ended...'

'Camarada Vargas I understand your point but bring them up again and you will regret it!' A voice boomed. It sounded so... Familiar. Esteban groaned in pain grabbing his head. He saw Monokuma grab something and toss it to him.

Esteban saw it was a familiar set of pills. Without even hesitating he took on and gulped it the pain slowly subsiding.

"We can't have you dying out of nowhere." Monokuma said laughing. Esteban stood up gasping his forehead dripping with sweat. "Having you die like that would be so boring. Besides I have a proposal."

"What?" Esteban simply asked.

"I now understand it. To destroy your hope I need to break your ideals. Have everyone devolve into murder..." Monokuma said.

"What do you propose?" Esteban groaned.

"Simple really soon you'll receive motives. They will be enough reason for someone to kill. If they don't kill within the next 24 hours of the motive I will open more of the school." Monokuma explained.

"Monokuma... Why do you care so much about breaking me?"

"Why?" The bear asked confused. "Because unlike the others who cling onto hope you cling to your ideals. Ideals are stronger than hope. Break them and the person truly has nothing but despair."

Esteban looked at him and glared. Whoever controlled Monokuma had an obsession with him. He tried remembering all the enemies he made and tried to see who would have set something as depraved as this but no one seemed to fit.

"I believe that together humanity can accomplish great things. We just need to free ourselves from our shackles."

"Hmm... Well this has been enlightening but I have to go! The work of a headmaster never ends. Also... Do not tell anyone about our little bet. That would really ruin it don't you think?" Monokuma said threateningly as he disappeared.

Esteban looked at his other-self. He simply sat on the table saying nothing. Just looking at him.

'You are too weak' he simply said. 'They will break you.'

'No... I won't.' Esteban said confidently.

Junko watched from the cameras. She chuckled dryly remembering the first time she heard Esteban say something like that. Back when she was Ryoko. He tried reasoning with Yasuke when he fell to despair. Oh what a beautiful sight she thought.

Yasuke argued that no matter what he did or how he helped Junko she would never care for anyone but herself and how her despair was all-encompassing. To be fair she agreed with him, she had used him. He was a reliable tool. But it would be lying to say that her time as Ryoko made her... Like him...

He was ready to try to kill her until Esteban stepped in. He pinned him down. To this day she doesn't understand Esteban. He had always been this enigma. His plans had her always guessing. His thought process and actions had always kept her guessing. She found him amusing.

Being the ultimate analyst had always been a curse to her. Her processing power had rendered most things in life pointless. She knew the outcomes she knew how people would react. The longer she lived the less life made sense. That's why she loved despair, the one unpredictable thing in her life had always been that. Well that was until Esteban walked into her life.

Back onto that fateful night. Yasuke struggled, he wanted to kill her. He repeated how only killing her would bring him peace. And how he now understood she was completely gone no matter what he did.

Esteban argued with a phrase that she would never forget. "No one is ever truly gone."

She didn't understand why he had faith in her changing at one point or another. It didn't make sense, was it him being naive? She knew that wasn't the case. Although he held his belief in humanity Esteban had always been pragmatic. He had done unspeakable things in the name of his revolution.

Was it a crush? She had considered that but quickly discarded it. Esteban had been clear that while he enjoyed Junko's company for philosophical arguments he didn't see her that way. It was clear to her he seemed to be more interested in the detective and that pig she called sister.

She had decided to ask him why he believed in her before the killing games. Back when it was clear he had betrayed her. His simple answer was 'sometimes I don't know why I do things.' A typical answer when he didn't want to say what he really thought.

"Hmm... No one is truly ever gone huh?" She said hugging a Monokuma. "Somehow I doubt that. Out of all the people I've met I really don't understand you Esteban..."

Esteban sat in his room, he had a copy of the conquest of bread in his hands. One of his favorite books. Whoever had supplied him with those books had really made him a favor. His headache had subsided thanks to the pills and his other self had gone quiet.

He saw him out of the corner of his eye. Always judging him even though he didn't say a thing. He hadn't left his room out of respect for others. The last thing he needed was people thinking he was out to get them.

"Good morning, everyone! It is now 7 a.m. and nighttime is officially over! Time to rise and shine! Get ready to greet another beee-yutiful day!" Monokuma said. He looked over to his clock and let out a sigh. He barely slept yesterday and now he had to go out there. He would need a cup of coffee.

He went into the shower and turned it on. He let the hot water splash on his face. He let the water flow through his hair. As he stood under the water he traced his fingers down some of his scars. Many of them came from his time in El Carmen and the many brawls he had been involved in.

Others came from his time learning from guerilla groups. Others from heists, most of them had a story. And if he were to be honest he could probably recall most of the stories behind them.

He went directly to the cafeteria. He quickly made himself a sandwich and started making coffee. He heard someone come in, slightly turning his head he saw it was Kyoko.

"Buenos dias seƱorita Kyoko!" He said smiling at her.

"Hello Esteban" she simply said surprising him.

"Wait you understood?"

"I know a bit of Spanish." She said calmly.

"Wow... Tell me would you like a cup of coffee?" He asked her.

"Why would you make me a cup of coffee?" She asked wearily.

"Because I'm making one for myself too?" He said confused. "Kyoko I'm just trying to be nice."

"Why?"

"Do I need a reason?" He asked incredulously. "We are stuck in here camarada. We must work together and as I told you before I trust you."

She scratched her chin while she looked at him. What was his endgame? She thought to herself.

"Very well" she said as Esteban clapped.

"Good! How do you like your coffee?"

"One teaspoon of sugar, a bit of milk." She simply said as he went and got the stuff out.

"Interesting. Personally I like it black. It's a kick in the gut but it wakes me up!" He said laughing. She watched him, making sure he didn't do anything suspicious. He finished both cups and handed her one.

He took a sip of his and smiled. "Dios mio... That hit the spot!"

She took a sip of hers and was taken aback by how good it was. It felt familiar... She didn't know where she had one like this before but she definitely enjoyed it.

"I take it you liked it." Esteban said grinning.

"It is good..." She conceded. "Where did you learn to make coffee like this?"

"In my hometown of El Carmen. A local priest named Antonio Xejeira taught me. He was A good man, he gave me to eat when I was out on the streets." He said reminiscing about the old priest.

The priest came all the way from Spain to teach the word of God. He was an old man in his late sixties. White short hair and a short beard. A man who had always spoken against violence he was to Esteban like a voice of reason in an unreasonable world.

"Hmm I see... How long were you homeless?" She asked without tact.

"Jesus... You have no tact so you?" Esteban asked chuckling. "A few years, I didn't keep count."

"It is better to ask than beat around the bush is it not?" She asked.

"Of course... It's just... Nevermind... Hey Kyoko if you find anything keep me updated okay?"

"Only if you do the same."

"Of course!"

"What happened to the priest?"

"What do you mean?"

"You said was, implying something happened."

"Yes, he was anti-violence and condemned it. A gunman came in during one of the assemblies and shot him." He simply said. "Can we stop talking about that?"

"I apologize if I overstepped"

"No worries... Let's just... Forget it okay?" He said calmly. Esteban knew he had awful luck, everyone he ever considered family had pretty much died. It was a sore spot.

After eating Esteban decided to look around. Ask some people and see what they've found. He left the cafeteria and started walking to the dorm area. If he was lucky he would find someone there.

He saw two familiar figures talking. It was Makoto and Sayaka. If he were to be honest they looked cute together. Despite the situation he noticed Makoto was surprisingly optimistic.

"Good morning" he said to both of them.

"Good morning!" Makoto said smiling. Sayaka cowered behind him looking at Esteban. He let out a sigh and nodded.

"Very well, I'll be leaving." Esteban said calmly walking past them.

"W-wait!" Makoto said.

"Yes?" He asked turning his head.

"I hope we can work together!" He said. Esteban's eyes widened. Makoto seemed to hold no fear nor resentment towards him. It was refreshing...

"I hope that too camarada" he said as he left. He did not fault those who actually saw him as a threat. He probably was the only one here who had experience actually killing people.

"You are far from what I expected." A voice said snapping him out of his thoughts. It was Celeste, the ultimate gambler who had been hanging out near the bathrooms.

Esteban put his guard up, he had heard of the black widow in his time robbing banks. A heartless woman with a gambling addiction and no remorse she was the type of person Esteban loathed.

"Sorry to disappoint" he said dryly. "Is there something you need Ludenberg?"

"There is no need for all this hostility." She said calmly as Esteban rolled his eyes.

"I know about the black widow. The amount of people you've ruined..."

"I do what I must to accomplish my dreams."

"That would be admirable were it not for the fact of what your dream is." He said calmly.

"A bit harsh coming from someone with a list of crimes as long as yourself."

"What would you know?"

"A lot actually, only person who could realistically claim to be the ultimate heister would be the one they called 'San Salvador'"

"What makes you think I am him?"

"The body build, you're the same height and he is the only one with a list of heists that could be called 'ultimate'"

"What do you want Celeste?" He asked crossing his arms.

"Nothing really, I just want to start from zero. I want to get to know such an enigmatic figure." She said smiling at him. He rolled his eyes as he huffed.

"Something tells me you want money."

"Me? What makes you think that?"

"I know your game, I may have not met you but I have certainly heard of what you do." He said glaring at her. "You seem awfully calm."

"Why wouldn't I? You wouldn't hurt me?"

"How would you know that. I mean you know my track record."

"Well in all those heists you've never hurt a civilian. Surprisingly most hostages only have nice things to say about you. I take it that you want to get out but you aren't willing to break the code and image you've built." She said a bit cockily. He glared at her, she definitely knew how to push his buttons. But if it was just money she could have just said it. Then it hit him.

"You're desperate to get out..." He said as he slowly started grinning.

"I don't know what you are talking about." She said calmly.

"The queen of lies is so good she is trying to tell herself she is okay being stuck here forever" he said chuckling.

"I would ask you to refrain from taunting me." She said losing a bit of composure.

"You probably think I'm the only way you're getting out without killing right?" He said laughing. "And you don't want to kill till you have the full picture!"

"Shut your mouth you goddamn hooligan!" She yelled surprising Esteban.

"No accent huh? So you are Japanese, I bet your name isn't even Celeste." He said laughing. "Sorry 'Celeste' not everyone can be named something exotic."

"You are an insolent piece of shit!" She said a vein popping in her forehead.

"A piece of shit you need Celeste" he corrected. "Of course I'll find a way out. And you can help make it faster."

"How?" She said calming down a bit.

"Simple really. Keep an eye on everyone. And I mean everyone. If you have an inkling of suspicion someone will kill tell me."

"Why does that matter?" She asked.

"It's easier to work my magic when no one is killing each other like animals."

"Hmm... I can manage that." She said going back to her normal persona.

"Good, well I'll be seeing you later Celeste" he said sarcastically. He chuckled as he left. He saw his other self glaring at him. Since the pill he had gone quiet and had started just glaring at Esteban.

"Hey bro!" A voice said. He looked around and saw Mondo.

"Hello camarada" Esteban said smiling.

"Found anything useful?" He asked.

"Working on that. Whoever planned this was meticulous."

"Goddamnit!" he yelled in frustration.

"I understand the frustration camarada" Esteban said sympathetically. "But once we get out we'll teach whoever put us here a lesson."

"Hell yeah bro!" He said fist-pumping. "I gotta ask what does camarada mean?"

"It's like bro, it's just what we used where I come from."

"I feel honored bro" he said pulling Esteban into a hug.

"No problem camarada we gotta stick together."

"Hell yeah! Hey after this is done wanna go out with me and the gang? We could ride around." He said as Esteban looked at him amused.

"Why me?"

"Cause you're my bro, besides you must have some sweet rides right?"

"Well I have stolen a few vehicles." He said chuckling. "Maybe we could tear the streets for a while." Esteban offered.

"Hell yeah! You'll fit right in with the crazy diamonds!"

"Sounds like fun! Be on the lookout for anything out of the ordinary okay? Anything helps."

"You got it bro!" He said.

Mukuro was worried, Esteban had changed a lot. She wondered how much of him had been changed and what Junko meant by things getting harder for him. There had only been one person who had taken a genuine interest in who she was and that was him.

At first their meeting had been cold. Esteban didn't hold mercenaries or military contractors in high regard. He said they were just used because it was much harder to hold them accountable. That... Was certainly true, and she didn't blame him for all he had suffered.

But then... He attempted to get to know her better. He seemed genuinely curious about her. When he started working alongside with her and her sister he was the one who kept the things in order. While a wildcard himself he always protected Mukuro from anything Junko might do to her.

She knew she wasn't worth the effort. That she loved her sister and if this made her happy she was okay going through it. But he had none of it.

She still wondered why Junko decided to work with him. They both left it clear they wanted different things and this arrangement was out of convenience. They both played cat and mouse. Esteban always being one for unpredictability, the things he came up... Even Junko looked surprised sometimes.

Now she wondered... What if she had said yes back then... When the world was falling to chaos and despair grew Esteban extended her an olive branch. He trusted her and asked her to join him in his efforts molding the new world.

She said no, her love for her sister was too great to ever betray her. For the first time she saw Esteban saddened. 'Maybe in another life it could have worked...'

Could he have meant it? She wasn't so sure. It had been clear as day that he had developed a strong bond with Kirigiri. But through all of that he kept going back to her. Even if she was... Ugly... She didn't have what the others have, she was just a pig...

"You seem to be worried" a voice said snapping her out. Esteban was leaning on the door to the laundry room.

"Eh! You scared me!" She said going back into character.

"Sorry" he said chuckling. "I am told I'm very sneaky." He walked in and sat on a chair in front of her. "How are you holding up?"

"How do you think?" She snapped at him. "Aren't you supposed to be looking for a way out?"

"I am but I also wanted to check on you." He said giving her a smile making her blush.

"M-me? Why?" She asked struggling to keep character.

"Well Junko... I trust you, Chihiro and Kyoko the most." He began explaining. "While I won't let anyone die you three are my priority." He said. He grabbed a magazine from the table and looked at it.

The Junko in that picture was clearly different from the Junko he had met. He knew something was off. Even with photoshop it seemed a bit exaggerated she would look that different.

But she must have her reasons, he wasn't stupid though. He would be careful around her keeping his guard up just in case.

"Something wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing... It's just I don't understand the need for photoshop..." He said showing her the picture. "You are beautiful just the way you are."

"I-I... Thank you" she said as she became a blushing mess. He chuckled and stood back up. "Well I'll let you be Junko. I'll go check on the others" he said walking out.

As soon as he left a bear popped behind Mukuro. It threw another knife which she caught effortlessly.

"You dumb pig!" The bear said. "You are breaking character!" It scolded.

"S-sorry Junko..." She said apologetically.

"Hmph students these days can't keep their hormones in check..." Monokuma said. "If you wanted him so much you should have fucked him when you had the chance."

"W-what?"

"Ups did I let that slip? Come on Mukuro did you honestly think he would have offered you a place in his revolution had he not liked you?" Monokuma asked rubbing salt on the wound. "Offering you a spot? That's like marriage for someone as unpredictable as he was!"

Mukuro felt her heartbreak as she tried to keep herself controlled.

"But the boy was never good with decisions like this. He is an anarchist in every sense of the word even believing in nonmonogamy." The bear said blushing and sweating. "Sooooo kinky!"

"I-I see..." Mukuro simply said.

"But you wasted your chance. Now you're Junko Enoshima to him. All the memories are gone. And his mind is wrestling with what to believe."

"What do you mean?" Mukuro asked.

"Some of the things I did are working even better than I expected. You should have seen him..." The bear blushed heavily. "His face as his mind seemed to be ripping itself apart. It was beautiful."

Mukuro felt something she hadn't felt in a while... Anger... Anger at what he was suffering, he trusted her and she failed. But maybe... Just maybe it wasn't too late...
