I wake suddenly. My eyes take in every passing ray of light from the traffic in the street below and without a doubt I know I've slept too long. It was night; I didn't know the time and I wasn't even sure where I was. I remember a few things but my brain isn't at its peak function yet and things are kinda fuzzy. I sighed and my body ached in protest as I sat up, my hands pressing into a mattress which I definitely knew I didn't fall asleep on.
"Hello...?" I whispered, the quilt sliding off my shoulders as I shuffled to get up off the... Well, I can't say bed because all I'm on is the mattress and that's on the floor. Strange design choice. "I'm too old for this..." I grunted as I stood up and nearly tripped over after getting tangled in the sheets. "Such beauty... Such grace..." I sighed again, my ears pricking as I hear a male voice talking outside the closed door, I couldn't hear anyone responding so either the guy was bat shit crazy and talking to himself or he was on the phone. Honestly, it could go either way.
I make my way to the door and slowly open it, my fingers brushing back my copper waves as I try and look remotely presentable. A yawn escaping my lips as I step out into the living room/kitchen area.
"I gotta go." He hangs up the phone and looks at me as I rub my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose as I fight a headache.
"I uh, I didn't mean to fall asleep." I spoke, apologetically. "It's hard to find places to sleep nowadays." That wasn't a lie, I did struggle. It's been days without me finding somewhere safe to laydown – I guess I didn't realize how much I needed it until now.
"It's fine." He responded; his tone less blunt than before.
"Did you move me to your bed?" I asked, looking down at the half-drunk coffee and toast on the kitchen counter.
"I couldn't leave you on the floor." He lifted his gaze to me and for some bizarre reason I felt my cheeks warm. I immediately looked away and cleared my throat, rubbing the back of my neck as I nodded.
"Well... Um, thank you." I gave him a brief smile and stood in the doorway awkwardly. "I suppose I should get going."
"And where exactly will you go?" He leant back against the counter, crossing his arms over his chest.
"I should get out of town, after exposing myself I imagine they're already on their way." My hands shook and he clocked it immediately, I didn't have enough time to hide it beneath the sleeves of my borrowed sweater.
"Who are you so afraid of?" He took a few steps towards me; he was so close I could feel the warm of his breath on my skin.
"You are already in enough danger, if I tell you about them... I can't risk you being a target." I dropped my gaze to the floor, looking at my toes as I shuffled on the spot.
"Do you think I'm not capable of handling myself?"
"Nobody survives them..." I swallowed deeply as I tried to bury my fear. "Not even you."
"You don't know me."
"And that's how we should keep it." I lifted my gaze in search of my clothes. "You don't want any part in this."
"If I didn't, I would have left you on the streets." His voice was stern and I bit my lip, he wasn't listening to me.
"I'm not like you Brian."
"It's Bucky."
"Fine... Bucky..." I looked up at him, my eyes glowing orange as I tried to remind him that I was different. "I have lived a long time, far longer than you have and..."
"I'm 106." He cut me off and my jaw dropped, my eyebrows raising.
"There's no way..." That's impossible, I mean... I was 114 years old and still looked thirty but I had my energy, my powers. All I could tell he had was that metal arm. "How?"
"It's a long story." He looked toward the front door and I tilted my head as I looked him up and down. He looked very good for his age.
"I bet it is." I was about to ask another question before the front door exploded a few feet away, throwing him into the Livingroom and me backwards into the bedroom. I landed on my back, the air knocked from my lungs and my ears ringing. They'd found me... Shit, that was faster than I thought. Okay, you've got this. You've fought them before; you've gotten away before. Just get up, help Bucky and get the hell out of there.
"Raev!" Bucky shouted from the other room as I was clambering to my feet. I could hear people entering the place and as I got to the door, an armed man stepped forward and I grabbed the barrel at the end of the gun that was aimed at Bucky as he fired a shot, my energy absorbing the bullet and blasting it back at the intruder with far more force, sending him backwards and knocking down two more men entering the room.
"We need to get out of here." I moved towards Bucky as he ripped off his sleeve, showing his metal arm in all its glory. I've never seen anything like it... It was quite beautiful.
"You think?" He muttered and I rolled my eyes.
"Just stay beh-" A grenade which looked like it was from way into the future, was thrown into the room and I didn't have a chance to disarm it before it exploded, dispersing a massive field of some kind of energy, it knocked us both off our feet and I heard the window smash from behind me as Bucky was thrown out of it a few seconds before I was.
"Bucky!" I used my energy to buffer myself towards him, wrapping myself around his muscular form tightly as we fell toward the earth. "Hold on to me!" I screamed as his arms moved around my shoulders and I used every ounce of energy I had to slow our decent enough before we landed on top of a car, the windows cracking and the alarm ringing as I groaned with his weight on top of me. Whatever that energy grenade was, it's messed with my abilities like I've never experienced before.
"Are...You, okay?" I stuttered as he brought his arms up beneath me to scoop me up and immediately get going into a sprint.
"I'm fine."
My head was on his chest as he sped away from the scene.
"Bucky, I'm okay... You can put me down."
"You have no shoes on." He pointed out and I looked down at my bare feet and finally noticed the chill.
"It's fine, please put me down..." He ran into an underground car garage and placed me firmly on my feet and I swayed a moment before finding my center. "I'm so sorry... This is what happens to anyone I come in contact with, I bumped into a woman on the street once and the next day she was found dead..." I clawed at my hair and started to pace; he didn't say anything – he just observed.
"I know you are capable of looking after yourself but you should disappear for a bit and I'll lead them off somewhere so you can be safe."
"That's not happening."
"Excuse me?" I stopped in front of him and turned. "This isn't a negotiation."
"I've dealt with worse people Raev." his voice held a different tone when he spoke this time, I knew he wasn't lying and I didn't dare ask for more information. Now was not the time.
"You have no idea what they are capable of, you've been so kind to me. I can't allow you to do this." I was stern when I spoke, my eyes holding his gaze as he looked down at me.
"You don't have a choice." He turned and walked away from me towards a black car, the only one currently left in the lot. "Get in."
"Bucky, please..."
He stopped and opened the passenger side door, his gaze watching me from over his shoulder. "Don't make me ask again."
I didn't have the energy to run away, he would catch me in a heartbeat and what else was I going to do? I had no shoes, I was in sweatpants and a sweater, I was in no fit state to go anywhere right now. I let out a deep sigh and walked toward him, sliding into the seat as he shuts the door firmly behind me.
"Where are we going?" I asked as he got in behind the wheel, starting the engine.
"To see someone who can help."
