Elena noticed sunlight streaming through the edges of an area of the room. She noticed there was loose fabric hung on poles, and behind part of the fabric she realized there was a translucent section of the building.

Humans are peculiar. Why make these buildings to block out the sun and then open part of it up only to cover it again?

That has always confused me, as well, she heard Castiel's voice join hers in her mind.

She pulled back from him and looked over, confused and surprised.

"How did you know what I was thinking?"

She was feeling more vulnerable at the strange experience of waking up as a human. He noticed her discomfort and frowned slightly.

"I am sorry, I did not intend to be intrusive. I heard your voice in my mind and assumed you were speaking to me."

Elena shifted her weight and moved to a sitting position, looking down at him curiously.

"With my family, we spoke to each other like that. I never really thought about it before. I didn't realize it was something I could still do in this form."

Castiel tilted his head as he laid on the bed looking up at her, prompting Elena to smile.

Definitely an angel thing.

"I do not understand," he said. "Have I done something humorous?"

She laughed and shook her head.

"No, Castiel, it's nothing. Just something I was thinking of."

"I think you are getting the hang of this. I did not hear what you were thinking at all."

Elena watched him stand up and tried it herself, still having difficulty with balance. Castiel's eyes swept across her naked figure before meeting her gaze again.

"We'll have to find you something to wear aside from my coat," he told her.

Elena remembered what he had said about humans and their clothing.

"Oh, right. Where would we—" she started to ask when he suddenly disappeared.

Elena took a step back and almost fell, regaining her balance just in time for him to appear next to her with some pieces of fabric in his hands.

"You can borrow these from Dean for now until we can get you something else," he told her.

Elena looked at what he was holding out to her, unsure of what she was supposed to do. Castiel waited patiently for her to take the fabric from his outstretched hands.

"I really have no idea what I'm supposed to do with any of that," she said finally.

"My apologies. I have grown so accustomed to some of their ways."

He helped her get on what he explained were various types of clothing. A pair of pants, along with a shirt, both of which hung off her frame.

I wonder why they call it a pair of pants if there is only one item.

Castiel had also brought some boots so that she wasn't walking around barefoot. She tried to step forward and had to grab him to keep herself from falling. With a little practice, she was moving around more easily, but then her foot slid right out from the boot. Elena frowned and sighed, frustrated the difficulty in tackling something as simple as walking. For the most part Castiel had remained quiet, standing back and allowing her to get used to things.

"It will get easier," he finally told her. "The boys will help you get clothing that fits and assist you until I can find some answers." He took her arm in his hand and they walked back to Sam and Dean's room. Both were dressed and looked ready to go. Castiel nodded to them both.

"Thank you again for agreeing to assist. I will return as soon as I can."

Elena felt a familiar tightness in her throat when he turned to stare at her, his gaze feeling like it was piercing her soul.

"I will get you some answers. I will find a way to fix this."

She started to feel warmth behind her eyes again, putting her arms around him and hugging him tightly as she tried not to cry. He brought his arms up around her and held her back, until she finally pulled away a little. He loosened his grip and before she could say anything he was gone again. Elena looked at Sam and Dean, who were sharing some sort of message with their faces and mouths moving, but no sound coming out.

"Something feels strange," she said, and they both looked at her.

Elena was starting to feel quite uncomfortable by the buildup of pressure in her lower body, something she had been ignoring since she woke up. The ache was becoming unbearable.

"Strange how?" Sam asked.

Almost immediately, she felt the pressure relieve itself and her legs felt warm as liquid traveled down them.

"Oh, I feel much better now."

Dean and Sam stared at her pants, then each other, and slowly looked back to her.

"Feel free to keep those pants…" Dean trailed off.

He shook his head at Sam, who shrugged his shoulders.

"Okay, I'm gonna go grab you a few things at the store. I'm pretty sure I can find some clothes that will fit you. Don't pee on anything before I get back. Actually, just don't pee on anything in general. Sammy, you can help get her cleaned up and explain to her what a bathroom is."

Sam raised his eyebrows and shook his head, sighing.

"Yeah, uh, thanks, Dean. Let's just hope Cas gets back with some answers soon. Like, before she has to do more than just pee."

"No offense, Sammy, but I'm gonna leave all that up to you. I'll be back," Dean said, still laughing and shaking his head as he walked out.

"Did I do something wrong?" Elena asked, uncertain about what had happened.

Sam sighed and shook his head, his expression softening.

"No, no, you didn't do anything wrong. People use these things called toilets, which are in bathrooms, to do what you just did in your pants. Uh, eliminating in your clothes and on yourself is not something people do, it's not clean and it smells, too. We also take a shower or a bath each day to stay clean."

Elena smiled and nodded, excited to have remembered something that Castiel had mentioned.

"Yes! Castiel told me about how offensively you smell if you do not clean yourselves regularly!"

Sam paused for a moment and then laughed awkwardly.

"Ahh, yeah that sounds about right," he said, rubbing the back of his neck with a hand. "I'll show you what to do in the bathroom, it's not that difficult. Just know if you start to feel any, um, pressure in that lower area of your belly, you should probably use the bathroom. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it."

Elena followed Sam into the bathroom and listened intently as he explained what each item was. She learned new words and the functions of items that people used daily. Being human was proving to be quite complex. Surviving until she could get back to her actual body would be draining.

"This is all much more complicated than anything I've ever had to do just to survive each day. Thank you for explaining everything. I'll get myself cleaned up now," she said, and Sam nodded.

As he turned to leave, he reminded "Don't put the water too hot or else you'll get burned."

Elena sighed as he left the room and closed the door. She enjoyed the feel of air against her skin again as she got undressed. Wearing clothing was uncomfortable and still annoying. She didn't like the way the fabric felt against her when she moved, the way it bunched in the corners as she bent her arms or legs. It was heavy and felt scratchy against her skin. She climbed into the bathtub and knelt down, remembering what Sam had shown her to get the water to come out. She flicked the drain catch once she had a good temperature and the water started to pool around her body. Elena shifted into a sitting position with her legs stretched out in front of her.

The water felt nice around her body. She sniffed the air and noticed the smell Sam mentioned.

I never used to worry about this sort of thing. There's so much to learn.

Elena said the word "bathtub" aloud a few times as the water rose, enjoying hearing the way the sounds bounced around and the way it felt when she said it. She splashed the water around herself, thinking back to times when she would play with her family in the lakes and ponds nearby. If she closed her eyes she could almost hear them again. A deep ache sat heavily in her chest, an insurmountable sorrow. That burning feeling started again in her eyes and Elena forced herself to focus on the task at hand of washing up. As she contemplated whether or not she needed to wash her hair yet with the shampoo, she heard a knock.

"Hey, uh, Dean's back with some clothes for you whenever you're done," Sam called to her.

Elena decided she could tackle the hair problem a different day if she was trapped here that long. She climbed carefully out of the bathtub, clutching the side of it and keeping her body low. Balance was still troublesome, but she managed to stand up. She opened the door and walked out of the bathroom into the main room. Dean and Sam were talking about something and turned to face her when she walked out. They both made a strange noise and looked away, Sam staring up at the top of the room like it was the most interesting thing he'd ever seen and Dean with his arm raised in front of his face with an awkward grimace across. He glanced briefly back at her and away again.

"Uh, look," Dean said, clearing his throat. "People usually aren't so naked around other people, especially people they don't know that well."

Sam laughed.

"Yeah, Dean, tell that to the waitress back in Flagstaff last week."

Elena could see Dean shoot Sam a dark look briefly before shaking his head.

"Way to teach her how to use a towel, Sam. Your clothes are over on the bed right there, uh, the underwear goes on before the pants."

Oh, darn, I forgot about the towel.

She walked over to the bed where Dean had left the clothing. She didn't recognize the trapezoidal shaped fabric, that must be the underwear that Dean had referenced. After a few mishaps, Elena managed to get dressed. She was surprised that everything had fit, and she felt much more comfortable with the clothing Dean had picked for her. It was still a strange sensation, but this material didn't feel as scratchy on her body. Sam and Dean were both turned away from her still, shifting around awkwardly as they waited.

"All set, I think," she said.

When they turned around, Sam's eyebrows raised in surprise and a smile etched across his face. Dean looked proud and nodded at a job well done, giving her a little whistle.

"Lookin' good, Elena," he said as he closed one eye quickly while keeping the other open. She wasn't sure what that meant, and couldn't help the frown that appeared. He held up his hands in a non-threatening manner.

"Only joking, it was a compliment."

Elena raised an eyebrow and thought about what Castiel had said, of human expressions and tone making it difficult to tell the meaning of things sometimes. This must be one of those times. She sighed, wondering when he would return.

"Okay, so we should probably get some food in you. Sammy teach you about using the potty like a big girl?"

Sam rolled his eyes and shook his head.

"Jesus, Dean."

Elena perked up at that.

"Do you know him? I've missed him! It's been so long since I last saw him," she told them.

Dean and Sam had been heading for the door but stopped and turned to face her.

"You...knew Jesus?" Dean asked slowly, giving her an odd look.

Elena nodded excitedly.

"Yes, of course I know him! He left us long ago on a journey from our realm. We had always been aware of all that exists in this realm, well, generally speaking. Not the fine details of every species but an overall understanding. Jesus was quite interested in humans. I don't know how exactly but he managed to get God to turn him into one. How do you two know him? How's he doing? I'd love to see him again!"

How could I not have thought of this sooner! It will be so good to see him again! I'm not alone after all!

Sam and Dean just stared at her, mouths agape. Dean was the first to recover.

"Wait, wait, wait...you mean to tell me that Jesus was a...a unicorn?" He could barely get the question out.

Elena nodded.

"Of course. I thought you might know that since you knew his name? We didn't hear anything after he left. Isn't he still here?"

Sam and Dean looked at each other, Sam finally shrugged.

"Uh, so, long story short, our understanding is that he was born as the son of God, grew up, performed a bunch of miracles like healing sick people, turning water into wine, and generally being an all-around nice guy, and then got murdered for it. A few days later they went to where he was entombed and he was gone, as legend has it...no one really knows what happened because it was a couple thousand years ago. There are entire religions based on all of it, millions of people around the world worship and follow them."

Elena looked at Sam curiously.

Perhaps this is one of those times that they are teasing?

She decided to laugh, which didn't seem to be the right reaction based on the looks they exchanged with one another.

"Oh, you're serious. I'm sorry, it's difficult at this point to tell what might be humor. The son of God? I wonder how humans got it so wrong. I can't believe he's gone, though. I thought for a moment that maybe I wasn't alone, but I guess I really am."

"Well, not alone exactly, you've got us and Cas," Dean offered.

"Yes, for now."

"Well, let's get you some food, you'll feel better after you eat," Dean said, and she followed the two of them outside. They walked over to a chunky block on wheels.

"What is that thing?"

Dean looked at her, crushed.

"Thing? This beauty is no mere 'thing,' she's a priceless work of art. Perfection. My Baby. What dreams are made of," he said wistfully, gazing off into the distance.

Sam rolled his eyes.

"It's called a car, it's how we and most other people get around. Don't mind Dean, he's got an unhealthy obsession with this thing."

"Hey, this unhealthy obsession has saved your ass on more than one occasion," Dean retorted, prompting Sam to roll his eyes.

Sam helped her get inside and secured, explaining each thing as they drove the short distance to the diner.

"I have no idea what any of this means," she said to them, glancing at the menu.

"Well, since Dean here doesn't seem capable of speaking to a woman for anything beyond trying to get in her pants, I'll help you out. This is English that we're speaking, and it's what the menu is written in. There are many languages across the world."

Elena raised her eyebrows and shook her head a little, once again confused by what she felt was a pointless complexity of humans.

"Speaking of languages, how do you know how to talk?" Dean asked.

"I don't know, exactly. I mean, I always spoke with my family, but it was in our heads. I don't know a lot of words for the things you humans have created."

Sam sat up a little straighter as Elena spoke.

"You're telepathic?"

"I guess, if that's what that means. It wasn't exactly words in our heads though, it was more like implied thoughts and feelings. I'm not really sure how to explain it."

Dean frowned and shrugged.

"Well, I don't know what you're used to eating. If it's what I think it would be, this is gonna be a brand new experience for you. I'll order a few things and you can try them and see what you like. Are you cool with eating meat, or do you want me to just stick with non-meat options?"

Elena's face contorted with confusion and indecision.

Meat or non-meat?

"Don't worry about it, if you don't like your bacon or sausage I'll eat 'em," Dean decided for her, and Elena noticed him doing that weird one-eyed blink thing again.

Sam and Dean were sharing one side of the table, which Elena appreciated. While they'd been helpful thus far, she still didn't feel particularly comfortable with them. She wondered how Castiel was doing in tracking down some answers. She hoped he was okay, and not in any danger from whoever might be behind this. The waitress took the food order from the boys and Elena sat quietly, unsure of what to say.

When a vessel of water was placed in front of her, she immediately went face-first to enjoy some. She hadn't realized how thirsty she was until she was lapping at the water. After drinking a little bit she pulled her face up and realized that Sam, Dean, and the waitress who had plunked the water down in front of her were all staring at her.

"You okay, honey?" the woman asked her.

"Much better now, thanks!" She replied cheerily.

Sam started coughing and held his hand up to his mouth, but she could see a smile behind his fist. Dean looked at the waitress and shrugged.

"Just picked her back up from the asylum. What can I say, she hasn't been quite right since that tractor accident. Got her head done in something awful."

The waitress just stared at Elena for another moment before shaking her head and sighing as she walked away. Elena looked between Sam and Dean, waiting for one of them to explain whatever she had done wrong.

"Uh, usually we use a straw or just drink out of the cup like this," Sam explained, demonstrating with his own water.

Elena raised an eyebrow and did her best to copy Sam. She spilled some water down her front. It was hard to get the angle just right to get in as much water as she wanted without it overflowing what she could take in. The waitress came back and put a couple more vessels with some brown steaming liquid in front of the boys. Elena reached for one and Dean blocked her hand with one arm and tapped her hand with his other.

"Uh-uh, baby steps for you, missy," he chuckled. "God only knows what a unicorn on a caffeine high looks like."

When a spread of food arrived, Elena felt her mouth watering at the sight and smells. Sam quickly explained the different foods, utensils, and what she might expect from each item in front of them. He did his best, but there was no way he could have prepared her for the explosion of sensation with the first bite she took. The depth and difference in flavors and textures was overwhelming.

"Oh, this is incredible," she moaned, eating a piece of bacon.

It looked like the easiest thing to handle quickly, and she was not disappointed with her first taste of human food. Dean snorted and nodded.

"I like a woman who likes a good piece of bacon," he laughed.

Sam rolled his eyes and elbowed Dean's arm. Dean feigned hurt and then laughed again. Elena would've tried to study their back-and-forth but she was absorbed in a whole new world. The bacon was gone from her plate too soon. She decided to try the small circles next. There was some sort of liquid substance on them, but she didn't care, she just opened wide and shoved in as much as she could from one, feeling the sticky sweet liquid dribbling down her chin. Humans may be the strangest creatures she had ever known, but this was one aspect of humanity she might just miss when she was back to normal.

"That's friggin' hilarious," Dean laughed as Sam tried to get Elena to slow down. He gestured to the silver items to the sides of the plate.

Oh, darn. I forgot about those.

"Sorry," she tried to say aloud with a mouthful of pancake.

Food spilled out and Dean put his head in his hands, unable to stop his laughter. Elena did her best to mimic Sam the rest of the time, trying to use the fork and knife to eat. Being a human was hard work.
