Hi, readers! This is the third story in the short story collection of mine, Tower Troubles. I don't own the Titans, and I hope you all enjoy!
Happy reading!
It was early June, but the days were already growing unbearably hot. The air conditioning in the Titans Tower had already given out a number of times since the month had started, and whenever one of the Titans went out to buy groceries they always had to rush the frozen produce among other things meant to be cold in before they melted all over the place.
Even the Titans themselves had adjusted to the blistering heat, all of them undergoing an outfit change. Robin had switched from spandex green pants to looser black shorts, even taking the liberty of shortening his black and yellow cape. Cyborg couldn't do much for his own appearance, but he was constantly adjusting his body temperature and trying to refrain from using his sonic cannon as much as he could due to the amount of heat that had to build up in order for it to fire. Too much heat would overload his systems and likely would cause him to automatically shut down while the systems repaired themselves.
Raven was still wearing her usual belt and leotard, but she'd neatly cut off the long sleeves, making it look a lot like a ballet top. She'd even ditched the long cloak, so now a surprising amount of her body was exposed. There had been looks from the other Titans at the change in appearance, specifically Beast Boy since it seemed out of character for Raven, but one four-eyed death stare had silenced whatever remarks the team had stored up.
As for Beast Boy, he had switched to a short sleeved version of his usual uniform shirt, shorts instead of a jumpsuit, and taken off his trusty gloves. He'd already sweated through them anyway.
Starfire didn't have to make a lot of changes to her attire, obviously. The short skirt and the tube top were pretty airy already, and Starfire needed solar energy to fully operate anyway. But she'd removed her knee-high boots, which left her barefoot.
But it was around one p.m. when the heat, grew so intolerable that Robin and Beast Boy just completely removed their shirts.
"Why is it so hot?" Beast Boy whined, sliding his sweat-drenched shirt over his head and tossing it aside. "Jeez, it's like we're living in an oven. It's gotta be like a million degrees-" his voice was suddenly muffled as he shoved his head into a freezer drawer- "and I can't take this."
"Okay, that was way over-exaggerated, but I agree," Raven calmly interjected from her criss-cross position some meters above the couch. Her pale skin glistened with sweat. "Will someone check the temperature?"
Robin, fanning himself rapidly with his bare hand, pulled his communicator from his pocket and shut it on. "It's ninety-five degrees."
Beast Boy yanked his head back out of the freezer to yell, "Ninety-five degrees? I might as well be melted! How is anybody supposed to-"
"Do me a favor," Raven cut in dully, "and shove your head back in the freezer."
Beast Boy sighed dramatically and did as told.
Cyborg was frantically turning a knob in his arm, a look of intense focus on his face. "There's no way I'm gonna be able to keep up with this heat." He looked up to the ceiling scornfully. "Whoever's in charge of the temperature up there needs to chill out."
"The temperature is rather high, even for Tamaran," Starfire informed the team. She seemed cheerful as always. "On my home world, the average temperatures were in the eighties of gornubs."
The rest of the team guessed that meant degrees.
"Maybe someone should fix the AC." Robin drawled as he mopped his dripping face with a towel. "You know, again."
"Like the thing would hold out more than ten seconds," Raven countered, tucking damp strands of violet hair behind her ears. "There's no point."
"Even the freezer doesn't even feel like a freezer," Beast Boy groaned, popping his head back out and slamming the door. "I'm going to drown in my own sweat!"
"You'll live." Raven replied listlessly. She didn't seem the slightest bit concerned with Beast Boy's plight.
"I'm telling you Raven, it's all fun and games till I'm a puddle on the floor!" Beast Boy wailed.
"Yeah, yeah, we're all hot," Cyborg muttered, still fidgeting with his mechanical arm. "But no matter how much I adjust my temperature, my systems still won't cool down."
Beast Boy cocked his head and stared at the half-robot for a few seconds, then his eyes lit up, signaling that he had an idea. "Stay right there, dude," Beast Boy told him, and Cyborg looked up, confused.
"Why-"
"Maybe this'll work," Beast Boy assured him, and with that he shape-shifted into an elephant, switched the sink faucet on, and began to fill his trunk with the tap water. Cyborg watched, an eyebrow raised in skepticism.
"Whaaaat are ya doin'?" Cyborg queried suspiciously, eyes narrowing. Starfire glanced up curiously from her seat on the ground to observe Beast Boy and Cyborg, catching sight of Beast Boy's shirtless body.
"Why do you lack the shirt?" Starfire asked the changeling, an interested look on her face as she flew up behind him.
"I would die even more than I'm already dying if I kept that thing on one more second," Beast Boy bleated through his trunk-ful of water. "Just a little more...done!" He withdrew his trunk from the sink and aimed it at the distracted Cyborg, closing one eye to get a more precise view.
"You are dying?" A look of alarm descended onto Starfire's innocent face. "We will perish with the shirts on?"
Beast Boy was too occupied with himself to tell Starfire otherwise.
"No, Star, that's just an-" Robin began quickly, rushing toward her. Raven turned her head in surprise.
"The Earthly heat will not take my life force from my body today! Glorpnarp Kar!" the alien shouted, like-colored eyes blazing. With that, Starfire ripped out her own top, exposing her bare upper body completely.
"Wow," Raven mumbled awkwardly, lowering her eyes.
"Starfire-" Robin instantly spun back around on his heel, away from the alien, his face turning red.
"I have defeated the high temperatures!" Starfire announced jubilantly, slamming her purple tube top on the ground. "I will not be passing away today!"
Beast Boy turned, trunk still filled to the brim with water- and caught a glimpse of Starfire, floating in the air absolutely topless.
"Gah!" Beast Boy gargled, and out of shock and embarrassment, without thinking, he blew the water stored in his nose all over the common room, drenching Robin, Raven, Starfire, and everything around him- but mostly poor Cyborg.
"D-dude! Wh-what-what-" arctic blue sparks were flying from the metal man left and right as his movements grew erratic, sudden, and jerky. "Now-now l-look what you made me d-" Before he could complete his sentence, all of a sudden, Cyborg's red cybernetic eye dulled, the sky blue glow on his metal parts faded to an indigo color, and he toppled to the ground with a loud bang. A small, robotic message emitted from his body, saying in an emotionless voice, "Systems reloading."
Beast Boy quickly morphed back into his normal form and ran over to the fallen Cyborg, peering into his cybernetic eye. "Loading...two percent." He turned back to his fellow Titans, who were both dripping with tap water and sweat, and who all looked extremely unamused. Starfire was still topless, but thankfully her arms were folded across her chest in annoyance.
"Uh...pool day?" Beast Boy joked nervously, scratching the back of his head and putting his hands behind his back guiltily.
Raven, whose hair had darkened significantly due to the sopping mess all over her and everything else, sighed as she looked from the guilty Beast Boy to the ticked off Robin to an exposed Starfire to a malfunctioning Cyborg.
"Well...there's a lot to sort out here."
