Breaking uncertainty
"To be honest, he's feeding me up!" Rebecca Catalina shouted as she slammed back her glass of beer on the bar table.
Riza took a sip from her cocktail, grinning lightly as she looked at her best friend being angry, once more, about Jean Havoc, 1st Lieutenant freshly back into the military after his recovery, and more importantly, boyfriend of said best friend.
It had been one year since they'd begun to go out together, and because of the anti-fraternization laws, Rebecca had left her uniform to settle in Central and help Madame Christmas to rebuild her bar and informant network.
"I swear to you," she continued. "If he does the same again, I won't hold back. Twice we plan a date, twice he arrives late, as if nothing was wrong, without any real excuse!"
"And yet, you still love him. Isn't that a good sign?" Riza asked.
She knew, from a reliable source, that Havoc didn't leave HQ late when he had a date with Rebecca and worked hard enough to finish all his paperwork before leaving. She didn't know however why he was late.
"Maybe, but I don't know why, I'm afraid to lose him, for him to leave me and stop loving me…" Rebecca emptied her glass and sighed.
"Reb, he always seems eager to see you. It's been really hard for him with women before you. So he doesn't realize that you want to be with him for a long time, he wonders when you'll be tired of him. But be sure of one thing: he cares for you."
"Then what's happening? Why is he late?"
Riza shrugged and admitted she didn't know anything. "I think that if you want to know what's happening, you'll have to face him and ask for answers directly."
"Argh!" Rebecca grumbled. "Okay, but that will be when I'll be ready."
Riza glanced to the door of the bar and straightened a bit. "Actually, you might have to ask earlier than you want." She said, smiling faintly.
Rebecca turned and froze at the sight of the men who had entered the bar. Roy Mustang and the man they'd spoken about for half an hour, Jean Havoc, stepped in the room, dressed elegantly.
"What's happening? Riza, tell me it's only a coincidence if they're here!" Rebecca whispered angrily.
The adjutant of the youngest General of all Amestris history glanced at her sheepishly.
"I may have let them know that we would go out for a drink together and that if they joined us we could be happy." She said in an innocent tone.
"You "may"? You told them everything, didn't you?"
"Rebecca, calm down! I'm sure everything will be fine."
Their argument died as soon as both men arrived next to their table. Havoc stayed silent, openly looking at his girlfriend, and Mustang nodded at them and smiled at Riza. "Hawkeye, you're stunning tonight. What are your feelings about another drink, but with me?"
Riza rose, heat growing on her cheeks. "Gladly. By the way, you're not so bad yourself," she said, pointing at his suit. He normally wore it for civil formal occasions of cover missions that involved such dress code.
They left together, much closer than an officer and his subordinate should be, since Riza's hand rested now on Roy's arm. Rebecca and Jean stayed, looking at each other a bit awkwardly. Eventually Havoc cleared his throat, embarrassed.
"Hawkeye told us you would be here tonight and that would be an opportunity to see each other." He seemed quite nervous, and Rebecca's mind turned and steamed while she kept a blank face. She didn't need to worry, did she?
Jean sat on Riza's chair. "Becca." It was the name he'd given her when they'd begun to date. "I think you're worrying about why I was late for our last dates."
For sure she was!
"To tell you the truth, I couldn't make it in time because I was too nervous. I know it seems surprising, because you didn't see it, but I'm honest. What I'm trying to say… I've got something to tell you for some time now, but I haven't managed to find enough courage to do it."
He rose from the chair and knelt in front of Rebecca. She was scarlet red and had felt too many emotions during the last minute. Anger, fear, sadness, then joy and love, that overwhelmed her. Her heart was pounding like a drum in her chest.
"Rebecca Catalina, it's been a few years we know each other, and it may seem early in our relationship, but I feel like it's the perfect time." He took a small box out of his pocket and opened it. A ring bearing an emerald stone laid shining in it. "Will you marry me?"
Tears burned Rebecca's eyes as emotion overwhelmed her. She'd begun her night complaining about Jean Havoc and finished it with a ring on her finger as she accepted his proposal. She would have to thank Riza for meddling in her heart matters, for she'd been efficient, as always.
For now, the most important thing to do was to kiss her fiancé.
