The first week of training had been brutal. Bella felt like her lungs would explode with all the running Magnus had them doing, but his point was that you had to get faster. Running and cardio would help that. Eric was terrifying. He did not give two fucks about who was hurt. You fought until you were knocked down on the mat. Tris had the hardest time with sparing, but she was still trying her hardest, trying to build herself up physically.

They were being allowed a night off from training. So, they ventured into the heart of Dauntless. There was music, tattoo shops, and other random things. Bella and Tris wandered in to get tattoos. They thought it would be nice to become something new.

The woman from the aptitude test was there. Bella and Tris both frowned.

"What are you doing here?" The woman hissed.

"Uh…tattoos." Bella and Tris said at the same time.

The woman looked around and then nodded then ushered her into a room. "I'm Tori." She introduced and had Bella sit in the chair first, while Tris sat to the side, watching. "You both are idiots." She said, her voice hushed.

Tris and Bella were confused. "Why?" Bella asked.

"There's a reason why I had to manually override your results."

"Wait, Tris, did you…"

Tris nodded, swallowing. "Tori, what does that mean?"

"It means that your lives are in danger, and no one can ever know what you two are." Tori said and held up a book, handing it to Bella.

"What are we?" Tris asked, her voice low.

"They call you Ascendants. No one can know, not even the people you think you can trust." Tori reiterate the importance of no one finding out.

Tris and Bella nodded. Bella felt scared for the first time since coming here. What was Ascendant? What did this mean, and why were both her and Tris the same? "I want this." Bella pointed to the celestial tattoo. It was a sun and moon, woven together, with stars around.

Tori nodded, and Bella passed the book over to Tris.

They were silent as Tori did their tattoos, which barely hurt. Bella's tattoo was on the back of her neck, and Tris got hers on her right collarbone, of three ravens. One for each of them. Tris, Bella, and Caleb.

Bella and Tris wandered out of the tattoo, shop. They didn't speak about what Tori had told them, afraid that someone would overhear. Bella looked at the salon and stopped. "I want to cut my hair. I have so much."

Tris nodded. "Yeah, your hair has always been thicker than mine. You should." Tris said with a slight smile.

Bella nodded. "What about blonde highlights?"

"That's bold." Tris said with a little laugh and a shrug. "Go for it."

Bella disappeared in the salon and told the lady what she wanted. When she left, her hair was cut off to her shoulders and a blonde balayage effect tinted the ends of her hair. She felt much lighter than before, and she was happy with the change. Change. Something that she was unsure of in the beginning, but now, she was embracing it.

"That looks good." Tris said with a big smile.

"Thank you." Bella said and then they were greeted by Clary and Caroline. "Oh hey."

Clary smiled wide. "Your hair looks great!"

"I wanted a change."

"Well, that is definitely a change." Caroline said, and then held up drinks. "Come on, let's have a little fun before we go back to the grind tomorrow."

Bella and Tris followed Caroline and Clary over to the bar area. They picked up drinks, and Bella tested the taste of the mystical drink she was drinking. It was fruity, and most definitely alcoholic. There was some trap music playing, electronic mostly, and Bella and Clary started dancing on the dance floor. They were soon joined by Tris and Caroline. They were having fun, enjoying the perks of being Dauntless.

From the sidelines, Jasper and the other guys, Will, Al, and a guy named Peter watched.

Also from the Shadows, the Dauntless leaders lurked, and that included Eric. He watched as the new recruits had their fun and drank the alcohol. He knew that they would be hung over, or not performing well in the morning, so that would be his chance to knock a few of them down a peg.

Four was also watching, keeping to himself until Magnus found him, slinging a arm over his shoulder. "Hmm. Our recruits are getting naughty, should we step in?" He purred in Four's ear, so he could hear over the music.

"No. They're doing it to themselves. They'll quickly regret it in the morning." Four said simply and stepped away from Magnus.

Another man walked over, his dark hair was shaggy, and his piercing blue eyes were like a brilliant ice color. "Well, well. Magnus, you got selected to head up recruit training this year with the big boys."

"Hmm. Damon. Don't worry, you'll get to have your fun too. I'm requesting for you to be added to my team." Magnus said, looking over at Four.

Four made a hmph sound. "Eric took Klaus as his second."

"Oh?" Damon asked. "Are they trying to kill the recruits this year? Oh right, the new rule. That's bogus." Damon said, and lifted his beer to his lips, taking a drink. "Who did you pick?"

Four raised a brow. "Alaric. He has the same views as we do." He said, looking towards the dance floor where Tris was dancing with the other girls. "What do you think about Tris Prior?"

"Hmm. She's slow, not as strong. Has terrible balance, and she can't seem to stay off the mat." Magnus inputted. "She's the opposite of her sister."

"I don't know. I see a determination in her. She's been training two hours before everyone wakes up in the morning, and she's the last to bunk." Four said.

"So is Bella." Magnus said. "There's five or six of them that are up before everyone else. They're taking it seriously. If it were up to me, I would give them points for that."

Four sighed. "But Eric's not allowing it." He muttered.

"How's the board looking? Where are these six recruits on the board?" Damon asked.

Four took a square device out of his pocket. "Jasper is 5th, Bella is 15th, Cristina is 22nd, Will is 29th, Al is 30th, Caroline is 31st, and Tris is 36th." He looked at the names. "Oh yeah, Jasper has been going and helping them in mornings." He mentioned.

Magnus blinked. "Oh right. There are seven of them. You know my math sucks." He joked.

Damon nodded. "Okay. So next sparring. Place Cristina and Jasper, Bella and Will, Al and Tris, and then…" he skimmed over the list. "Who is this guy? Alec?"

"He's Dauntless born. He's fierce. Not a good opponent for Caroline." Magnus said.

"What about one of the Cullen brothers?" Damon asked.

Four frowned. "Emmett is a large dude. He would kill her, and Edward Cullen changed to Erudite remember."

Damon blinked. "Oh, right. Alice is on the board. She's 21st. She could be a Segway in for…" Damon looked at the list again. "Caroline."

"You are terrible with names." Magnus pointed out.

"Yeah, I know."

Four thought about this. "So, what are you saying. We match these eight together, and hope that the one's ahead take it easy, and throw a sparing match?"

Damon snapped his fingers. "Bingo."

"He's not wrong Four. Whatever the Dauntless leaders are up to this year with kicking the bottom to be Factionless is a game changer. Some of these kids don't deserve that. Hell, no one purposely deserves to be Factionless. There are many uses for those that are not as physical as the others." Magnus explained, a serious look on his face.

"Eric was Erudite. He's smarter than that. He'll figure out what we're doing. It's too noticeable. We can't drag all of them from the bottom." Four said, hating that he would have to kick any one of them from Dauntless.

"Okay, work with the weaker ones subtly. Give them extra pointers. There are no rules against us helping the ones that are lacking." Damon said.

Magnus nodded his agreement. "Work with Tris. Four, she's Bella's sister, and I have a feeling if Tris gets tossed, Bella will go with her."

"Faction before blood." Four said.

Magnus snorted. "Seriously? You think that matters for real? They're in the same faction."

"He's got a point." Damon said and took a drink of his beer and looked at the list. "Oh look, my brother is in the top ten." He said with a smirk. "Dauntless born really have the upper hand. They should be scored separately."

"We know." Four said. "That was something I argued with Eric about, but they wanted it this way." He looked up, watching Tris dance with the others, the alcohol having a clear affect on her like the others, and he wanted to walk over and stop her from making it harder on herself for the next day, but he stopped himself. Unsure why he was wanting to help her so badly.

[4 am, the next morning]

Bella pulled her boots on and stood and stretched. Cristina was regretting all the drinking the night before, and so was Clary. Clary wasn't doing terribly, but she was on the cusp with Al and Will on the chart, and she needed to train more, so she was joining the others in their insane training at four in the morning, so she could try and stay ahead, or catch up. The training room was dimly lit, but they didn't need much light for what they were doing.

"Whose idea was it to drink so much?" Clary whined as they stretched in their small group.

Jasper grinned. "It'll be a challenge. All of this early training will loosen you up later before Eric gets ahold of all of us." He said, looking over at Bella, who didn't seem to be as affected by the alcohol. "Someone is a master at holding their liquor." He commented.

"No no, I feel like shit too, I jus hide it well." Bella said and did a few more stretches. Her and Jasper were the two on the board that were above the red and were probably pretty safe from being cut. Clary needed to keep ahead of the game. Anyone under rank 28th, which meant that twenty Dauntless recruits would be Factionless at the end of all of this.

Will looked at the board, seeing his name as 29th was concerning, and it worried him, but he was so close to getting above that line. "Has anyone noticed that basically half that are above the line are all Dauntless born?"

"Yeah, and the other half are not." Bella said.

"Only 16 Dauntless born are part of the 48. Thirteen of them are above the line." Will pointed out further.

Tris and Bella looked at each other. "Yeah, I know." Tris finally said. "Let's not focus on that. Let's just focus on getting above the line." She tried not to think about being 7 slots away. She felt like she was running under water, and everyone else was just faster than she was.

"Tris is right. Let's just get all y'all above the line." Jasper spoke.

"We've been training with you for a week now, and how is it someone from Amity is placed so high?" Cristina asked, genuinely impressed that Jasper was beating out a good bit of Dauntless born.

Jasper nodded. "Wanna know a secret?"

"Yes." The others said in unison.

"There were a group of us in Amity, that would have underground fight matches. We padded our hands, and we learned hand to hand from a couple Dauntless transfers a few years back. It's true that Amity wants peace, and there is a lot of love to go around, it still didn't stop some of us from feeling different." Jasper explained. "And you see where we ended up." He said with a smile. "Jake, Mike, and April are friends of mine. We were part of that fight club."

That did explain a lot. Jasper was toned, and had been learning hand-to-hand combat for three years before the choosing ceremony and the aptitude test. Bella found that interesting. She wondered who else was trained the same way that wasn't Dauntless born.

They started their training, which consisted of Jasper explaining different techniques, and helping with teaching how to put more torque in their strikes to create more power behind it. Bella and Jasper spared each other, but it was a teaching match. Jasper would correct Bella's stances as they sparred, adjusting her position, and showing her how to break through certain guards.

"You do realize, you're showing me all your weaknesses." Bella teased with a smile.

"Well, I'm not too worried about falling below the line." Jasper said with an easy smile.

Bella smiled. "Can you work with Tris? I think I'll be okay, but…"

Jasper nodded. "I understand. I'll work on her." He said with a wink, and then he broke off to go talk to Tris, adjust her stances like he had adjusted Bella's.

They finished their pre-training by six-thirty and went back to their bunks to just freshen up, before Eric drug them all back out to the training hall.

Eric watched as people punched on the bags, used the jump ropes, and did their independent training. He stood next to Four, with Magnus on the other side. "I think we're ready for another sparing match between the recruits."

"You know they were all out drinking hard, with their free time. You want to torture them." Four said, turning his attention to him.

Eric smirked. "Of course." He stepped out into the ring. There were no ropes, just a square, padded stage. "Okay. We're going to do some sparing. This is being graded. Peter and Bella. You're up first."

Peter jumped up on stage, his arms bare. He was cocky, and Bella had seen Jasper and Peter spare before, and she knew that Peter stepped before he punched. But he was strong.

Jasper patted Bella's shoulder. "Straight to the throat." He murmured in her ear and then watched her jump up on stage. Magnus noticed how close Jasper and Bella had gotten, and that intrigued him somehow.

Bella took her stance, and so did Peter. She was patient, waiting for Peter to make his move. Jasper's words rang in his mind. Peter stepped throwing a punch, and Bella moved to the side, waiting for his next step, and when he did, she moved fast, her hand blocking and wrapping around his arm, locking, and then she jabbed him in the throat, cutting off his oxygen, and then her leg swept his feet out from under him. The shock of Bella's hit, and the gasp for air disabled Peter for that moment, and Eric watched, looking at Bella and giving her a nod, and Bella, struck Peter in his nose with her fist, busting his nose open, blood spewing and then Peter was losing consciousness. Bella leaned back, clenching her fist, and blowing out a breath. A couple guys went up on stage and helped drag Peter off.

"Interesting." Eric said, and then looked at Four. "Peter was your strongest guy." He said with a small smirk. "Next, Caroline, Izabell." He called, and Bella stepped off the stage and walked off, shaking her hand a little. Jasper walked over to her.

"Hey. You, okay?" Jasper asked, looking at her hand, already swelling from the contact to Peter's face. He knew she broke his nose when he saw the hit.

"I've never….I've never broken something before."

"You broke your hand?" Jasper asked, reaching for her hand, and inspected it. He turned it over.

"No. I broke Peter's nose." Bella murmured. "I don't like this feeling." She murmured again.

Jasper nodded. "I know. It's part of being Dauntless. Plus, Peter is cocky, and needed to be reminded that he's not all that." He tried a smile. "You're okay though?"

"Yeah." Bella sighed, and looked back towards the stage. "We should go back before Eric realizes we're not watching." He muttered and they both walked back, standing there watching as Izabell knocked Caroline out.

Bella winced. She knew that was going to cost Caroline, and she felt the pain for her friend.

"Tris and…Jace." Eric said, his arms crossed.

Jace was Dauntless born, and he was a decently buff guy. His hair was a dark blonde, like Eric's but had more length to it. The sides were shorter than the top, and the top was pulled back in a man-bun. His golden eyes were unique compared to the others. He looked scary when you looked at him. Bella had watched Jace break Mike's nose earlier that week. She was afraid for her sister.

Four stepped in. "Eric."

"What, this will be fun." Eric waved a hand, a hint of amusement in his voice.

Four looked at Tris, and he worried for her. He glanced up at Jace, who looked at Tris, unsure of why Eric put someone on the bottom up against him, unless he was wanting to devastate her. He swallowed, looking over at Four, who gave a slight nod. Jace stretched, clapping his hands together and jumping up on stage.

Jasper moved to Tris' side. "He's a heavyweight. His right knee is weak, and he swings wide. Find an opening, and like Bella did with Peter, straight to the windpipe, if you can't, kick his knee out." He murmured quickly, before Tris got up on stage.

Eric narrowed his eyes at Jasper, seeing how he was talking to Tris, helping her. He wasn't sure he liked that. He would have to knock Jasper down a peg later.

Tris took the stage, looking at Jace. He looked at her, not saying a word, but he winked at her. His back was turned to Eric, so Eric couldn't see the wink, but Tris understood then, what it meant.

Jace started off swinging at Tris, and she moved to the side, dodging. He threw some more swings, and she dodged again.

"Stop dancing with each other." Eric warned.

Jace studied Tris and then winked at her again, hoping she got the message, and he swung wide, and Tris moved to the inside, her foot coming down to his knee. He had anticipated that she knew that his knee was his weak point, because Tris was observant he mused. Her fist came around, catching him in his throat, and if it wasn't for Four, and the fact that Tris needed a break, he would have avoided the pain. He gasped, choking for air, which made him stumble back, giving Tris more than enough opening to punch him again, and then she swept his leg out from under him.

Eric watched in shock as Tris took Jace to the ground, and then punch him in the face, his head lulling back. Tris moved back, trying not to look so shocked herself. Uriah and Jake moved to the stage, taking Jace from the ring. When they got him far enough away, Jace regained his balance, spitting blood.

Four glanced over at Tris as she got off the stage, his heart calmed down. He wasn't prepared to watch her get beat, and Jace had realized what Eric was doing, and gave Tris the opening she needed without it being obvious. But what was obvious was Jasper helping Tris. He knew Eric well, and that was a challenge that Eric would not take kindly to.

"Jasper." Eric called. "I've got a special for you."

Jasper jumped up on stage, prepared for whatever it was Eric had planned. He assumed he was about to be punished.

"One of our trainers is going to test you. You like to help your fellow recruits. Let's see how well you do without much help. Klaus," Eric said, and Klaus joined Jasper in the ring.

Klaus was taller than Jasper by a little bit, and he looked strong. His curly blonde hair was kept neat on his head, and his ocean blue eyes were swirling with amusement, when he looked at Jasper. Klaus was not Dauntless born. Klaus was Amity born like Jasper was, and Klaus knew Jasper well. Well enough to know that Jasper would make it really far in Dauntless. "I won't go easy on you."

"You never did." Jasper said, and then Klaus moved fast, and it was a full out, sparing match with Klaus and Jasper, their strikes were blocks, and their blocks were strikes. Jasper was more talented than he let on, and he spun, a spinning round house coming down across Klaus' face, breaking through a block, which caused Klaus to swing, and Jasper moved, dipping low, his other foot coming around. Jasper placed a hand on the floor, and then flipped backwards away from Klaus. Blood trickled from Klaus' nose, and he wiped it away before attacking again.

Jasper moved like fluid, shifting to the side, taking a stance that even Four didn't even recognize, and then he spun Klaus getting him into a headlock all of a sudden, kicking his legs out from under him, bringing Klaus too the ground.

"You couldn't beat me back on the farm, you can't beat me now." Jasper muttered in Klaus' ear. "Goodnight." He said, and Klaus lost consciousness, and Jasper released him, letting him fall forward onto the floor. Jasper stood, taking a hand and sweeping it through his hair, brushing it out of his face. He looked at Eric. "This is going to come back and bite me in the ass later, but, pinning me against my older brother wasn't exactly a smart move. If you knew Klaus or me at all, which I know you do, you would know that this was a failed pairing."

Magnus stifled a laugh and Four hid a smile. Eric did not look amused. "You're right. It will bite you in the ass." He said and got up on stage, him and Jasper were close to the same height their eyes level. "Points for bravery, standing up to a leader."

"Just so we're clear. I'm not afraid of you." Jasper warned.

Eric arched a brow. "You're not huh. Everyone is afraid of something. Just wait." He said and then he took a step back and looked around at everyone, he then turned fast, swinging at Jasper.

Jasper caught Eric's wrist, moving automatically and pinning his arm behind his back. "That was a bad idea. Now you've been humiliated in front of all the others." He said, and then pushed Eric away from him.

Eric's anger was clear on his face, but Four and Magnus stepped in then. "Good job Jasper, go ahead and go hit the shower." Magnus said, with a slight smile. He turned to Eric. "Time to update the board."

Four nodded, taking out his device and entered in the points for the ones that sparred, as did Magnus. Eric growled, taking his device out and punching in some points.

The board shifted, changing. Jasper was now third, Jace fell to fifth, Bella was now twelfth, Cristina moved up to twenty-first, Clary stayed where she was, and Will made it above the line. He was twenty-eighth. AL went to twenty-ninth, but Caroline fell to thirty-second, and Tris moved three to thirty-third. It was progress, and that is what mattered.

"Shower, get some chow. We have firearm training right after." Eric spat, glaring at the board, before walking off the stage.

Magnus looked at Four as everyone cleared out. "Did Eric not know that Klaus and Jasper are brothers?"

"I don't think he did. Eric doesn't research a whole lot. I think he was more interested in the Dauntless born he took. He has three weak links. I heard him talking about. He pulled their results from the aptitude test, and Clarke, George, and Alison tested for other factions. I think they were afraid to leave what the knew." Four said with a sigh.

Magnus nodded. "Well, shocking as it may, Tris and Bella both tested Abnegation. Bella shouldn't have tested Abnegation." He said and sighed. "Tris on the other hand. She holds that fierceness, and she's determined. She's got a great deal of potential. She's five away from the line. We have another month before round two."

"Yeah, let's hope we can get her there in time." Four said and then they left to go to the dining hall to eat before all the recruits filed in.
