The Great War, one of the darkest times in Remnant's history. With Mantle and Mistral against Vale and Vacuo, the people fought each other as well as the Grimm for ten years. But outside of either side, there was a third faction, one that benefited the most from this war. It was called Hydra.
Hydra's goal was simple: to instigate the war even further and let the four kingdoms destroy each other so they could rule over Remnant in their place. Lead by the merciless Red Skull, Hydra has had a hand in some of the Great War's bloodiest battles. Thankfully, Hydra's actions were discovered. Some like-minded individuals from all four countries exposed them and fought back against them. So to counter Hydra's threat to the world, these Allies worked on a project that could bring peace to the world: Captain Remnant.
Private Steve Rogers was born frail in the kingdom of Vale, not really fit for military life and severely lacking in any strength. But despite his small size, Rogers had a resolve to protect Remnant and ensure peace throughout the four kingdoms, which is why he volunteered for the Allies' project to create a super soldier, a being capable of facing off against several Huntsmen and Huntresses at once. And thus, Captain Remnant was born. As a gift for his contribution, the King of Vale presented the captain with a gift, a shield made of a rare metal called vibranium; super light and one of the strongest in Remnant.
Ever since he became a super soldier, Captain Remnant lead his own squad called the Howling Commandos and fought back against Hydra's meddling as well as ensure some battles in the Great War were resolved with as little casualties as possible. Even his own best friend and skilled acrobat, Bucky, stood loyally by his side.
After the king of Vale was forced to deliver a devastating blow to the enemies, the war was about to be declared to be over. Instead of accepting the chance to rule, the king invited the leaders of the other kingdoms to the island of Vytal to form a treaty and establish the future of Remnant. Little did they know that Hydra was planning to interfere, so the Howling Commandos had one last mission to do.
The Red Skull gazed outside his castle in the middle of an island close to Mantle. He stood in the balcony watching the vehicles drove toward him from the distance. He took a deep breath and kept his bald, fire-red head calm.
"Stop them from interfering." Red Skull commanded the Hydra soldiers behind him. "They must not interfere."
"Hail Hydra!" the soldiers pledged as they armed themselves and waited at the gates.
The Hydra soldiers pointed their guns and waited for the doors to burst open. They were ready to open fire. The sound of the engines stopped, but after a minute, there was nothing there. They waited for a moment with their guns locked, but there wasn't anything happening at the time.
"Excuse me!" called a young man's voice from above. The Hydra soldiers looked up and saw a man in a blue uniform wearing a black mask over his eyes. "Is this the right evil Hydra headquarters? If not, could you give my friends and I directions?"
With the soldiers distracted, the Howling Commandos immediately broke through the castle doors and fired at them. The Hydra soldiers tried to fight back, but then, their guns were knocked out of their hands by a flying discus. It flew back to the commandos where the leader caught it.
Captain Remnant stood proudly in his special uniform, one that was decorated with the four colors of the four kingdoms. It was the same color scheme as his vibranium shield, but it also had a big star in the middle.
While the commandos began securing their new prisoners, Captain Remnant met up with Bucky.
"What's the situation, Bucky?"
"Not good, Cap." Bucky replied. "The Red Skull's got a missile. A big one. He's going to fire it right at Vytal."
"Then we're going to stop him." Captain Remnant said. "Dugan, you and the commandos are in charge of disarming the missile. Bucky and I will go after the Red Skull."
"Knock him dead, Cap." Dugan said with a salute.
Captain Remnant and Bucky ran off up one stairway to another taking out any Hydra soldiers they came across.
One of the soldiers was brave enough to shout. "Cut off one head, two more shall take it's place!"
Cap's only response was throwing his shield at him to knock him out followed by, "Let's go find two more."
The next few hallways had a lot fewer guards. It concerned the two, but it gave them a chance to talk.
"So this is it." Bucky said. "After today, the war will be over. Got any plans, cap?"
"Well, the king of Vale did promise me a nice little retirement plan." Captain Remnant answered. "A quiet house in the suburbs that connects to a nice beach. Even Howard Stark promised to contribute."
"Any chance that Peggy Carter can be a part of that too?" Bucky asked. "I see the way you look at her."
Steve smiled. "Yeah. She's certainly something. I did promise her a dance as soon as I returned."
"I'm happy for you, partner." Bucky said.
That was when the two of them came across a large, metal door with the Hydra logo on it. It was a circle with a red skull inside of it. And that skull was attached with red tentacles. Cap and Bucky nodded and crept up. They were about to burst through the door when it opened on its own. Suddenly, the two were surrounded by Hydra soldiers with their guns pointed at them. The Red Skull himself stood behind those soldiers sporting his black military uniform.
"Captain Remnant, I advise you stand down." He said.
"Not gonna happen, Skull." Captain Remnant replied. "We can get through your forces."
"You might," Red Skull said, "But your partner won't make it out alive if you fight."
"That's what you think!" Bucky shouted. He was about to fight, but Captain Remnant stopped him. "Cap, what are you doing?"
"He's right. I'm not gonna let you die." Captain Remnant said.
"How noble, and very foolish too." Red Skull said. "At this very moment, my missile is locked on Vytal. Once it lands and the kingdoms' leaders die, all their people will be vulnerable to a Grimm attack. And once the dust settles, Hydra will reign supreme."
"Don't think you got the upper hand, Skull." Captain Remnant said.
The Red Skull chuckled devilishly. "Do you mean your Howling Commandos? I'm afraid they're walking right into a trap. Observe." He pulled out a black radio phone and pressed its side. "Lieutenant Strucker, status of the targets." There was no answer, which made the Red Skull confused. "Lieutenant, I need your answer." Still nothing, which made the Hydra leader upset. "Answer me!"
"Hi there! Sorry, but Strucker can't answer right now. He's a bit tied up at the moment."
Cap and Bucky were thrilled hearing the voice of a friend.
"Dugan, well done!" Cap shouted. "What happened?"
"Well, we ran into an ambush, when suddenly, Howlett… Well, I think it's better you should see for yourselves." Dugan replied. "Anyway, the missile is being deactivated right now as we speak."
The Red Skull growled as he crushed the radio in his hand. "Destroy them now!"
The Hydra soldiers were about to fire, but Cap caught them by surprise by repositioning his shield. The sunlight that reflected off of it shined right into their eyes blinding them. That gave both Captain Remnant and Bucky the chance they needed to strike back at the Hydra goons. They tried to shoot the super soldier, but they were still disoriented by the light to aim right. While this was happening, the Red Skull began to climb up his nearest ladder.
"He's getting away!" Bucky shouted.
"Not on my watch!" Captain Remnant said before knocking out the last Hydra soldier.
The two of them followed the Red Skull's lead chasing him to a black, aerial ship with the Hydra logo on its side. He took the pilot seat and hovered it, but in the nick of time, Captain Remnant jumped up and grabbed the ship by its edge. Bucky joined him by grabbing his leg, and they were both pulled up by the super soldier's strength.
Once they were inside, they were greeted by a gunshot that struck at Bucky's arm. His aura took the brunt of it, but he and his partner took cover to avoid the Red Skull's line of fire.
"You think you can end it all when you stop me?" shouted the Hydra leader. "Even if you end me, there will always be Hydra! There is more to this world than you can possibly imagine, and when we fall, we must come back stronger! That is why when you cut off one head, two more grows in its place! As it was taught to me by Sa…"
Suddenly, an inhuman creature popped out of the passenger seat next to Red Skull. He gasped as this floating Grim orb shot its spiked strings right around his neck.
"What's going on? I didn't fail you, my queen! We can still…"
Suddenly, the Grimm pulled itself back pulling the Red Skull out of the jet. But during his extraction, he was still gripping onto the steering wheel, which broke upon impact. He fell out of the aircraft right when the Grimm stopped itself with its strings still around his throat. Once he landed suddenly, a brutal cracking sound was heard from his neck leaving him tangling in midair.
Bucky was taken aback by what he had witnessed alongside his partner. "Uh, Steve, what was that?"
"I don't know." Captain Remnant said. He then noticed that right outside the aircraft, they were approaching the continent of Mantle. A large tundra could be seen in the distance. He also saw the steering wheel missing while he felt the descent. "Right now, it doesn't matter! We need to get off this now before we crash!"
Bucky scurried around until Steve Rogers found a parachute… only one parachute. "What do we do?"
"You take this. I'm a super soldier. I'll be fine if I just jump."
"All right." Bucky said.
He was about to accept the parachute, but the aircraft suddenly got a strong turbulence. Captain Remnant lost his balance and fell backward, right at the open door with the parachute still in hand.
"NO! BUCKY!" Cap shouted as he fell. The last thing he saw was the aircraft with his partner inside crashing right at the tundra shore. That was when he lost consciousness as he hit the cold water.
Ever since that day, peace was established between the four kingdoms, the Howling Commandos disbanded, the last of Hydra's resources were confiscated, and Captain Remnant was honored throughout all of history… even when he returned.
When Steve Rogers opened his eyes, he groaned after a very long rest. He suddenly found himself in a blue bedroom resting on a comfortable bed. He slowly got up and encountered somebody who stood next to him. It was a young woman with white hair, a white military uniform, and carried a sabre. She watched him with admiration and respect.
"Welcome back, Captain Remnant. My name is Winter Schnee. It's an honor to meet you."
"What…" Steve said holding his aching head. "What happened?"
"A science team found you in an iceberg." Winter said. "It seemed when you fell, you were frozen alive. That's normally fatal, but Dr. Erskine's super soldier serum seems to have saved you, which is amazing after all this time."
"All this time?" Steve asked. "What do you mean by that?"
Just then, the door opened up. A man in a white uniform walked in and gazed in awe at Captain Remnant.
He chuckled. "Until this very moment, I thought the science team was pulling my leg. I was even considering having them shot for a sick gag. But now, I see they were telling the truth. Captain Rogers, my name is James Ironwood, general of the Atlas Military."
"General?" Steve asked. "No, you're not the general. That's someone else." Both Ironwood and Winter shared concerned looks, which Steve noticed. "What?"
"Captain, I hate to break this to you," Ironwood said, "But you've been frozen for a long time. Most things have changed."
Steve had a concerned look. "What? How long have I been frozen?"
Ironwood frowned for a brief pause before answering. "About a hundred years."
One Atlas agent made sure no one was following him. He looked at every side before entering his office. He then pressed a button at the side of his desk revealing a secret door opening at the wall. He stepped inside and walked down the dark hallway until he came across a Grimm, the same kind of Grimm that attacked the Red Skull in the Great War; a Seeker.
From that Grimm, a woman's voice came out. "Agent Jasper Sitwell. What news have you brought?"
"You're not going to believe this, ma'am." The agent named Sitwell said. "An excavation team managed to find the body of Captain Remnant from the Great War."
"And that concerns me because…"
"Because he's still alive. He's probably up on his feet right now being debriefed by the general."
On the other side of the call, a pale-white woman in a black dress widened her black-and-red eyes with interest. She sat in her Grimm-like throne room speaking to Sitwell through her Seeker.
"I see." She said. "I want you to keep an eye on him. Make sure he doesn't become a threat to my plans."
"Yes, ma'am." Sitwell said. "But what shall I do if and when he decides to get involved?"
"Make sure he doesn't become a threat to my plans." The ghoulish woman repeated. "Captain Remnant prevented me from my goals once, and I will not let that happen again. We've worked to hard to be stopped now at this point. And of course… Hail Hydra."
Author's Note: In honor of the finale of the Falcon and Winter Soldier coming tomorrow (great show so far), Captain Remnant has made his debut. I call him Captain Remnant because obviously, there's no America in the RWBY universe. And we also have the Hydra of this universe. Hope you enjoy. Any and all comments are welcome.
