This is the white space from 7x09, so basically the whole Jay is missing situation, I´m writing another one shot based on 7x10, you´ll get to see more Upstead in that one.

TW/ Vomiting

Kim woke up at 4am, now getting used to morning sickness, it had become part of the routine, she couldn't remember the last time she had slept for more than 2 hours straight. She made her way to the bathroom, emptying the contents of her stomach, before getting in the shower, trying to wash away the sweat that covered her body. Thirty minutes later she was eating breakfast, and by breakfast it meant she was eating a bowl of cereal without milk, knowing that was the only thing her stomach would be able to handle. After she was done, she started feeling nauseous again, her efforts to keep breakfast down being of no use, she ran to the bathroom and leaned over the toilet, staying there for about 20 minutes, she got up, too exhausted to even brush her hair. She headed back to the bed and tried to get some sleep before having to leave for work. She ended up falling asleep for an hour.

Half an hour later, she arrived to the district, being more than aware of her appearance. For all she knew she probably had bags under her eyes as a result of the little sleep she had gotten that night, and she was probably pale, she didn't feel well. She went past Trudy´s desk, trying to go unnoticed, but failing at said cause.

"Burgess, come here"

"What´s up Sarge?"

"You look sick"

"I´m fine"

"Sure"

She quickly turned around and ran upstairs, ignoring Platt´s concerned face. She took off her jacket and sank in her seat, hoping nobody would notice her. The nausea came back within just a few minutes, she ran her hand through her hair, taking deep breaths. This was going to be a long day. Not being able to ignore the nausea anymore, she ran to the bathroom, not noticing Adam was following her. She leaned over the trash can, feeling someone rub their hand on her back, while holding her hair in a ponytail. When she could finally look up, she saw Adam there, it was weird, they were stuck in this limbo where neither of them knew what to do, they weren't together, but they weren't just friends, they were going to be parents, but that wasn't certain yet either. Somehow all that uncertainty weighed over them, more than they thought it would when they first found out she was pregnant. A million words lingered on the air between them, but they were reduced to Adam´s words: "I know you are working through a lot, but I just want you to know that whatever you decide I'm okay with, if you wanna talk about it, if you don´t wanna talk about it. Just, I´m here, for you." Her mind got rumbled up at those words, all she could get out was "I do appreciate it, it´s just". She got out of the locker room as fast as possible, Adam still following her.

They ran into Hailey in the hall, she was worried, they both knew her well enough to know that. "Have you guys heard from Jay?" That couldn´t be good, if anyone were to know Jay´s whereabouts, it would be Hailey, so they knew he was in deep. Coming back into the bullpen, Platt´s stern look was more than enough to tense up the atmosphere.

"Hey, is Halstead on a UC run?"

"Not that I know about."

"State's Attorney is all over me. He's supposed to be in court right now. Hailey, you know anything?"

"No, I called him a few times, but"

"I did too. No answer. So I ran the GPS on his truck. It's parked on a street in Englewood"

And just like that, Kim and Adam´s worries had been pushed aside, Jay was missing, and finding him was now their main priority. "Are you sure you´re good to do this?" Adam´s soft voice played at her heartstrings, but she couldn´t put her walls down, not when her entire future was on the line. "I´ll be fine when we find Jay, we can deal with this later." They both made the way to their truck, it was now a race to find one of their own. Hailey was a mess, she needed someone to keep her grounded right now, and keeping their secret well hidden and in the back burner seemed the best way to be able to be there for their friend.

The clock kept ticking, no sign of Jay. Hailey was losing it, her mind was all tangled, it wasn't just her partner who was missing, it was her best friend, the person she trusted the most. The case dragged on, and they didn't seem to be getting anywhere. As much as she wished it wasn´t the case, Kim´s maternal instincts were starting to kick in, she made a mental note to check in on Hailey, making sure she wasn´t freaking out too much. "Hey Hails, how are you holding up?" she softly put her hand on Hailey´s shoulder, "I don´t know, what if we don´t find him? What if it´s already too late?" She grabbed Hailey´s shoulders, just like Adam had grabbed hers that morning, forcing the detective to look her in the eye, "I know you´re scared, but you can´t think like that, not now, you gotta try to stay positive, he´s smart and strong and, no matter what, I´m sure he cares too much about you to leave you, he´ll be fine." Hailey looked at her, letting the words sink in, he couldn´t leave her, not now, not ever, he was her safe place. "Thanks Kim". They both parted ways, heading into their respective cars, going out to search for more leads.

After a few hours, they´ve found a lead that seemed to be their final answer. All of them were nervous, Atwater was doing a buy. They all took positions, they were nervous, with one of them already in danger, everyone was much more nervous than usual, the stakes were incredibly high.

As soon as the suspect grabbed his gun, Kim got a shot from where she was located but the other suspect ran away. After a few minutes, they heard Hailey over the radio, knowing she had caught him. Even though they were getting closer, Jay was nowhere to be found, they were running out of time and leads, and that wasn´t good for anyone.

A few hours later, they finally caught a lead that seemed definitive. They found a warehouse and, even though it seemed closed off, Hailey had managed to get inside, which ultimately made everyone much more nervous. They couldn´t hear what was going on inside, that was until they heard a gunshot and then complete silence. A few minutes later, the team managed to break into the warehouse. Their hearts dropped when they realized Jay had been shot, it was bad, all they could do was tell him to hang in there, but the prospect of him not surviving was truly terrifying. The ride to the hospital was a blur for all of them. Kev, Adam and Kim rode together, Kevin staying behind the driver´s wheel, while Adam sat next to him, and Kim stayed in the back seat.

They all arrived at med 15 minutes later, they were joined by a bunch of officers in the waiting room, but at that moment all they could focus on was Jay. They had taken him to surgery as soon as the ambulance had arrived. Hailey sat in a corner with her head in her hands, Kim sat next to her, and put a hand on her shoulder, "Hey, he´s gonna be okay, you gotta stay positive", Hailey just looked at her and broke down, Kim put her arm around her and let her breakdown in her arms. After a while, Hailey´s sobs started to cease, when Kim noticed she was starting to calm down, she spoke again. "We should get you cleaned up" "Okay", Hailey´s voice was barely audible, but she stood up and, with Kim´s help, made her way to the bathroom. Kim took a paper towel and wet it, helping Hailey wash off the blood from her hands. They both got out of the bathroom and sat next to each other, Vanessa also sat with them. They all felt like time was going by extremely slow, with no news of Jay yet.

The unit just stayed there, waiting in silence, meanwhile, Kim was starting to drift off to sleep, it had been a long day for all of them, but Kim had barely slept and she could finally feel the exhaustion taking over her body. Vanessa saw her struggling and asked softly, "Hey, Burgess, you okay", "Yeah, yeah I´m just tired, it´s fine", at that moment Hailey looked up to her friend, taking in her look, she had bags under her eyes and looked pale, "Kim, you sure? You look pale" "I´m fine, don´t worry guys".

Adam overheard the conversation and went to check on her. He crouched down and whispered, "Hey, you need anything?" "I´m fine", "Come here", he signaled towards the door and started making his way outside, she followed him. "You feel okay?" "Yeah, I just feel really tired" "Did you sleep alright" "Kind of, sort of…not really, but I´m fine, I promise" "Okay, let´s get you back inside". They got back inside and Voight was waiting for them, "Okay, I know we´re all worried, but I need one of you to keep me updated on Angela Nilsen" "I´ll do it sarge", Kim said, willing to avoid the questions that would come from her sudden disappearance with Adam a few seconds ago. Nonetheless, Vanessa started firing questions at Adam while Kim was gone. "What was that about?" "What?" "The two of you, what was that?" "Just checking in on her" "Sure". Vanessa was new to the team, but they were all surprised at how easy she had picked up on the team dynamics, she knew that Hailey and Jay had their thing, and so did Kim and Adam, she was also surprised at how oblivious they all were, it was like always being with a bunch of idiots who were clearly in love, but didn´t do anything about it.

An hour went by, they still haven´t heard from Jay. After another hour, Will came into the waiting room…
