Chapter 3

Aurelia stared at the man with obvious fear as she watched him slowly descend the steps, "It is days before school starts, and I find a young witch in my Tower when no one but staff is supposed to be here at the school. I do wonder why? Though the how is rather clear from the Time-Turner in your hands, my dear." The aged Wizard said walking towards her.

Aurelia looked around the tower once again to make sure she was not hallucinating. "Wh-where am I?" she stuttered her question.

"I do believe you would like to know when you are, rather not where you are. However, you are in my office and it is August 28th, 1973. Now, I should very much like to know when you are from and what your name is, as well as to why you are in my office?" He asked.

Swallowing back the fear, Aurelia suddenly realized who this Wizard was. She'd never met him, nor had they many photos of people from this far back, least of all current people, they had their photo abilities taken from them and not many people knew how to paint or sketch very well because they were all so worried about surviving rather than art. "Albus Dumbledore?" She asked curiously.

"Yes, that is me. But who are you?" He inquired once more.

With her breath now stuck in her throat, Aurelia stumbled back into a chair she'd bumped into and began to try finding her breath. "I-I'm Aurelia, Aurelia Aurora Newnan. I was born in 2015 on July 28th. Or at least I'm supposed to be. Maybe. I don't know how this works exactly." She went on rambling.

Albus eased a chair in front of her and took a seat himself, "You are safe if that is your fear dear child. Now, what happened?" He asked calmly. There was no point in panicking on his end, he was entirely safe, and no one to his knowledge had gotten onto his school grounds. Otherwise, he'd know about it. Other than this arrival, who had suddenly appeared in his study. Watching her carefully as the girl looked at him with renewed tear-filled green eyes, he nodded to her and let her break down. Her body leaned forward into her lap as she covered her face with her hands and wept for whatever reason that was unknown to him for the time being.

Glancing to one of the Portraits in his office he requested the object of the painting to fetch Poppy and McGonagall and took a moment to take in her appearance for memory. Her dress, her fearful confusion, her admitting of being at least fifty plus years in the future. Knowing that something happens between now and then, which would cause a child to come back in time, other than blank curiosity and the obvious lack of knowledge as to the consequences of coming back so far. Her time was likely erased, or very much altered. But she had also quite possibly created a separate timeline by coming back so far.

By the time she was getting done with her tears, Poppy and McGonagall were rushing in through his office in their night gowns and robes.

"Merlin's sake Albus, what's going on?" McGonagall asked upon seeing the platinum blonde child, her face was red and puffy, clearly crying and very distraught over something.

"I would like to know that myself Minerva. However, I think I would like to know her health. Madam Pomfrey, if you wouldn't mind?" Albus asked the Nurse.

Nodding, Madam Pomfrey approached the girl, thanking Albus for letting her take the seat he had risen from for her to sit and examine the child. After her examination, Madam Pomfrey sighed with a slight smile, "All in all she's in perfect health Professors, other than her distress that is causing her high blood pressure." Pomfrey informed them and stood from the chair.

Waving his hand to the chair, Albus watched it return to its previous place behind his desk. "Thank you, Madam Pomfrey, you may return to bed. I apologize for the lateness." Albus said to the Nurse, nodding his head to her in thanks.

Nodding her head in return to him, Madam Pomfrey said her goodnights to them and headed back to her room to get some sleep.

The two Professors waited patiently for Madam Pomfrey to leave as they turned their attention to the girl wiping her eyes clean with the handkerchief Madam Pomfrey must have handed her without them realizing it.

Albus sighed as he looked the girl over once again. She'd appeared out of thin air with a Time-Turner that was burnt out from the chard appearance of the sand glass that she was not noticing. "Now dear girl, would you please tell us what exactly has brought you here." He ordered. This time it was not in a question format. It was a clear statement that she was going to tell them.

Taking some time to recollect herself, Aurelia looked to the Wizard she'd only heard stories about, "… Tom Riddle, Professor. I wasn't originally supposed to be the one doing this. But my Professor, in the time I left, was killed and she handed me the Turner before she died. Handing the task over to me." Aurelia explained. "However, I'm clearly further in the past, meaning that the task I was supposed to do for her has not happened yet."

"And when exactly were you supposed to return to?" McGonagall asked with some obvious aggravation at a professor sending a child back in time to do their task! Dying or not the Professor should have known better! This girl clearly had no idea what happened when you went back in time. And just maybe her Professor, if killed, hadn't had the chance to explain consequences and the Rules of the Time-Turner. Huffing to remain calm, McGonagall took a seat in a nearby chair, "Forgive me Albus, but I must sit."

"Not at all, please sit Professor McGonagall. It is after all late, as well as a large, surprise to have such a situation occurring." Albus said casually. Returning their gazes to the girl, they waited for her to continue.

"Okay. Um, I ended up being chased by Riddles son, Bane, I got as far into the ruins as possible and my Professor's ghost yelled at me to just start spinning the turner. At this point, I do believe she didn't much care when I arrived as long as I was not there at that moment. But I obviously spun the Turner a few too many times. I'm sorry." Aurelia said sincerely. "Am I in a lot of trouble Professors?" she asked, worried they'd call the Authorities. And clearly, the Authorities were not under Voldemort's rule right now. But that didn't mean he still didn't have followers. She knew nothing of this time.

"Why were you traveling back in time?" McGonagall asked.

"To stop the death of Harry – I mean. I can't tell you all of that actually. At least, I don't think I can. Can I? Or is that breaking a rule?" Aurelia asked.

Now a bit less angry with the girls' Professor, McGonagall sighed, "No, you are not in trouble. And you can I suppose tell us, if you've gone further back in time then there's not much we can do right now." She admitted.

"Well, if you don't mind, I think I'll keep a few things to myself?" she asked with some nervousness showing through as she shrugged at her request.

Raising their brows to her the two professors shared a look before they nodded to one another, "Very well. When exactly was this Professor of yours supposed to return to?" McGonagall asked again. She was growing rather tiered in asking the same questions over and over again.

"Um, I believe it was 1994, I think. She was killed before she could get to the ruins to start the Time-Turner." Aurelia explained.

"Well, I'd surely say you missed that year by a long shot. And you said this had to do with Tom Riddle? As in, you-know-who?" McGonagall questioned with some curiosity. At the girls' nod, she sighed.

"What has happened in your time?" Albus asked.

"Um, well. After a certain person's death, he took power, attacked the school, and it's been in ruins since 1996, I think. I left the year 2028 when our underground Haven was attacked. Riddle's son managed to infiltrate the Order and the Underground." Aurelia told them, reliving the memory over in her mind painfully.

"And this son of his was chasing after you?" Albus questioned. This was rather curious to him now. Riddle having a son was strange to him. And dangerous.

Nodding to the Headmaster, Aurelia took a deep breath, her lungs were finally settling down and easing up from her panic. "Yes."

"Likely because he was trying to stop her. Albus, this does not mean her time, 2028, has been erased. If they get their hands on a Time-Turner themselves then they can go back to any time at this point and start killing us all." Minerva told Albus.

"Actually, there are only two Time-Turners, Professor McGonagall. You made very sure of that yourself." Aurelia told her. She figured she was breaking a rule telling the Witch Professor this, but she wanted to ease her worries like they were doing for her, simply by their presence.

Shocked, Minerva looked to the girl with some curiosity and confusion, "Oh?"

Nodding, Aurelia took a brave breath in, "After Professor Dumbledore passed away you destroyed every single Time-Turner you could possibly get your hands on. All but two. One you gave to your star pupil before you passed away, the second was buried with you. And no one knows where you were buried. Professor Granger made sure of that." She informed the woman.

"Oh? Well, how…Acceptable. Well, I suppose I owe this Professor of your great thanks." She said, not truly sure how to feel about that. But she supposed if times were that desperate then she would very much appreciate such measures. "Albus, what do you suppose we are to do? We can't just send her back there, her being here has likely changed even that. It's changed her life, she may not have even been born in her time that was created. And we can't simply call the Ministry, they'll… Well, they'll arrest the poor girl!" Minerva suddenly sputtered with worry.

Sucking in a breath, Aurelia returned to her panic, "No!" she cried with fright, jumping from the chair and made a run for the door. She shouted with fright at the door slamming shut and locking. "Do restrain yourself, child. I have no intentions of doing either, nor would I allow them to suffer a child to such cruelty of interrogation and Azkaban. You are no criminal Aurelia. However, if we tested your blood against any magical family that we may be able to track down some remaining family, see if maybe they'd be willing to take you in. Claim you were a lost family relative somewhere and you have been living in an orphanage that we likely missed. It happens, we aren't perfect. But we do try to find all of those magical Children, even those in orphanages." He said.

"But I'm related to the Lovegood and Diggory families. Other than that, I have no clue who else I could be related to." She told them with uncertainty.

"That's perfect then. The Diggory's son graduated a few years ago, they only have one child, they'd be pleased to take in a child with their blood. Though, we should try to figure out how to explain our late finding of you." Albus thought for a moment.

"Edger had a brother, he left shortly after Edger married his wife, it was years before Amos was born." Minerva reminded Albus.

"Ah, yes that is right. If I'm not mistaken his brother has not contacted them since he left. Though I should still look into that. Or… No, I don't believe that would be a good idea, they would require blood tests to be done as well, then realize we lied. It appears that the Diggory's may be the only option we have." Albus said as he thought to himself out loud.

"Albus, we can't possibly tell them we missed a child, first of all, she's over eleven years old, and clearly she's had the schooling in her time. And if she's telling the truth of her Professor being my personal star pupil there's almost nothing she won't already know up until a certain grade." Minerva informed him.

"She could always pretend to not know things. But I see your point, Professor. Even if she pretended to not know things the lack of challenge could cause a problem."

"Isn't there an Orphanage for Magical children?" Aurelia asked suddenly.

Nodding with a sigh, Minerva nodded to the girl, "Yes, there is, but unfortunately they have records of them which means you'd have been registered in the Ministry's books. They, as well as us, would have found you. Meaning for this to work we have to know for sure if Edger's brother has spoken to them in the last twenty-plus years. I'm sure they'd want to know who you're related to exactly. And we can't exactly tell them you're from the future because the Ministry will without a doubt find out soon after and come for you." McGonagall explained.

"So, then I'm not even safe here with my own family," Aurelia told her.

"No, that is not the case, necessarily." Albus said clearly, "As long as we can prove that you are related to them, I doubt they'd say no to taking you in. However, it comes to a worrying standstill that you were obviously taught and will without a doubt need to be given a placement test. If you pass, many people may inquire as to how you knew those things." He explained to her.

"Meaning I'd have to fail on purpose and go through the first two years during year three with extra courses to make up for the first two years I missed?" Aurelia finished for him with a soft groan. "I was afraid of you saying that. Not to mention the summer work overload." She said with a defeated sigh.

Chuckling at her, Albus softly grinned as he nodded to her observation. "Correct, summer work will be required for all students to undertake. You will need to stay on top of things for a while to catch up. I understand that this isn't what you expected to encounter and endure, but unfortunately, we can't have you just wandering around." Albus told her with some amusement.

Seeing his continued amusement, Aurelia huffed with some aggravation. "And you expect the Diggory family to just accept this news just like that?" She asked curiously and honestly lacking faith in her own biological family. "My father and mother aren't even born yet, and my grandfather likely hasn't even married my grandmother, and my great-grandparents will doubtfully believe this long-lost family member ploy." She told Albus, but his continued grin of entertainment was beginning to grow on her curious mind. Sighing with some dramatics, Aurelia gave up. "Fine, please tell me how you plan to convince them." She ranted a bit.

"You let me worry over that dear girl. Professor McGonagall, please take our guest to a room to sleep. In the morning and the coming days, we will get this all sorted out." He told them.

Nodding with a tiered sigh, McGonagall nodded, "Come, dear, off to bed. And a change of clothes I would think." Minerva told her with a sigh. They'd made it to the door before Aurelia gasped and rushed back to Albus, her hands digging in the small purse for something left them both confused until her whole arm slipped into the little purse and did an "Ah-ha!" and pulled out a letter, handing it to Professor Dumbledore. "My Professor had this written up, it was meant to go to you in 1994, Professor. But I believe you should have this now rather than later." She told him then rushed back to Minerva upon him taking the letter with a thankful smile and a gentle nod of his head.

Aurelia sighed as she pulled the covers over herself, the cream-colored night dress Minerva had sewn up for her quickly was very comfortable. "Thank you, Professor McGonagall." She said to the witch she'd never had the chance of meeting before her untimely death.

Smiling to the girl as she tucked her in, "You are very welcome, now sleep, I do not doubt that you've had a very stressful day. And an adventurous one. But do me a favor?"

"Yes?"

"Try to stay out of trouble. Especially with those boys, gracious, those boys are always getting into trouble. You'll do well to steer clear of those boys." Minerva ranted on before huffing her aggravation out about a group of boys had Aurelia curious, as well as a bit worried. "Goodnight Aurelia," Minerva said kindly to the girl before leaving the Gryffindor Tower. It wouldn't hurt to let the girls rest in her House tower until they got her sorted into the proper house.

"Goodnight," Aurelia whispered, her eyes watching the door close and the feel of the warm fire from the small fireplace in the center of the room light the small room around her. The many empty beds that would soon be filled with girls of the Gryffindor house. But the emptiness left her lonely and the realization that this was all real, this had genuinely happened. That her Professor's task had become hers.

To save Harry Potter.

But now she had to save more than just her Professor's friend. By her coming back in Hermione's place, Aurelia's task was much bigger than she had naturally thought as her Godmother's words echoed in her ears.

"Save them… Save us…"

Sniffing back her tears she certainly didn't want to let loose all over again, Aurelia snuggled deep into the mattress and the blankets around her, curling up into a scared little ball. "But I'm just a kid." She whispered to herself sadly.
