When the morning came, Mac had finally gotten on the line with someone and he was in another room with Dr Hunter. "So what is Miss Drop's condition?" The people who ran all the orphanages in New York had to be aware of what condition she was in. "We want to get her file out there."

"Well if it's the same to you, I want to adopt her. But she's stabilizing. She had her head smashed into a mirror on the Medical Examiner's van door as they had just arrived back. When they came back with a gurney for the body, Rayne was there and she was unresponsive. We found two bullets. One outside of her body and one in it. Her back was hit. I'll allow Dr Hunter to explain," Mac answered knowing that Aubrey would be the best one to explain it.

"Rayne was shot and the second time, the bullet managed to nick her spinal cord. It's damaged but I think if we can get her onto immediate physiotherapy that she will recover and get her mobility back," Aubrey answered calmly. "I do agree that Mac would be a good candidate. He's a Crime Scene Investigator, his girlfriend works at the Lab and already some of the team is protective of her," she added. Mac smiled at Aubrey with the statements assuring they would be the right choice.

"Rayne is a minor and from the background we're running at the moment, Mac Taylor does check out as does his girlfriend that's indicated on the details you sent over about an hour ago. I'm presuming that you and your girlfriend have spoken about this Mr Taylor," the man began calmly.

"Yes. I'll take the custody of her as it would be easier on the both of us as she came from London and if she goes there and stays for some time it doesn't damage her," Mac responded honestly. As the man kept writing things down he smiled in relief. "I should warn you though that where we found her, we have to also hold her around as a suspect potentially," he began and the man seemed shocked as a sound was heard. "I don't think she did it, but she was one of the only people with access to the house, so I think she knows something."

"What do you intend to do?"

Mac sighed and Aubrey looked at him frustrated. "Rayne's memory will already be foggy due to the bash to the head. I'm not going to force it but I do want her to go through something at the precinct. I want her to draw the attacker if she can remember him."

"You just said her memory will be," he began before Aubery realized and made a sound.

"Dr Hunter has figured it out. Very recent memory will be shot. So who attacked her might be a little fuzzy, but our medical examiner guesses the children we found? They've been dead for about 4 days," he informed and he then took a breath. "I don't ever want to put a child through this, but she's the only one who will be a witness to the murder that we can talk to. The other children are already across the city and gone by now. Rayne won't be subjected to too much. But we do need to see if she knows something and if so, what she remembers."

"Be careful," the man advised before chuckling. "Besides that gruesome bit of information it seems she'll be in good hands," he added. When Mac hung up, Aubrey looked at him and he sighed nodding at her. She didn't want to believe that Rayne's home was the scene of a murder.

"You still want to go through with it? Telling her?" Aubrey didn't know if it was the best course of action with a child of all things let alone an adult that was recovering from an attack to their head. He sighed and nodded knowing he had to tell her about what happened.

"Flack and I have to bring it up. She might be able to recollect something about his face or what he was wearing. My team has already taken all the evidence and we just need something we can use to help identify the attacker."

As they walked into the room they watched as Peyton and her were working through some workbooks that Mac had brought over for her to be doing while she was waiting to be discharged. Flack caught up as well and Mac nodded motioning for Aubrey to walk out. She nodded and Peyton followed knowing it was going to be hard for them to do as well. "Rayne, before you had your head bashed in, do you remember these people?" Flack showed their faces only from the autopsy since he didn't want her to see the gruesome scene yet.

"Yeah they were in the same room as me," she answered hesitantly and then Flack knew she was covering something. She was starting to be cautious with her words and that meant her mind was remembering something.

"They're dead," he informed revealing the more gruesome cards of pictures with their bodies and Rayne took no time in flipping them over. "You flipped them quickly. You know they were dead?" She didn't answer and he then noticed that she was starting to tap her finger. "Rayne, did you see what happened?" Mac noted everything became standstill with her and it was evident what the answer was. She knew what had happened to the kids.

"They were bashed and frozen," she responded after a few minutes and Mac looked at her. "He froze them first so they wouldn't fight," she responded finally. He sat with her and looked into her eyes and could see pure terror in her face.

"Did you see who attacked them?" She nodded and he looked at her. "Was it the man who was saying he ran an orphanage still? Was it him?" She shook her head and he frowned. It would have been much easier if it was, but it was clearly someone else. "Can you remember features about him? What his face looked like?" She nodded and then covered her head and Mac held her to his chest. He knew what it meant. She had been trying to block him out. "I know it's hard. But I just need you to help Flack. If he pulled up a program to digitally draw him out, could you?" She nodded and Mac sighed in relief. "When we leave later that's what we'll get over with right away. That way you don't have to deal with this anymore."

When Peyton and Aubrey walked in, they looked at Mac and he nodded sadly. "She was able to perfectly describe what happened to the bodies and it matches Sid's autopsy. He said they had been frozen first and then beaten. She said the same thing," he warned as Flack was sitting with Rayne. They were working through the homework packages and Mac sighed. "She's not going to have an easy transition." He then saw Aubrey with the papers and he read through them and looked concerned. "She can't walk?"

"We tested that last night. She can't stand up longer than 2 minutes and can't pull her legs to move," Aubrey answered. "She's got a long recovery like I warned you. Her abdomen wounds will heal, but the one on her front, needs to be cleaned once a day, preferably at night and then recovered up with a bandage."

"The one that's right below her diaphragm?" Mac wanted to make sure and Aubrey nodded so he wrote it down quickly. When he looked in he saw Flack helping her put the books away and he picked her bag up revealing a new set of clothes that Mac had bought and she covered her mouth smiling. "I never thought I'd see the day a child got so excited at new clothes."

"Well being hidden from the world, I'm sure that owner didn't buy her something," Peyton answered before she looked to be changing finally. "She's having struggles because she can't stand up fully yet," Peyton chuckled and then finally smiled as she finished. "There we go. She's got it," she teased quietly.

"She'll learn. But I'm sure we'll have to remind her there will be pain but it stops if she perseveres," Mac chuckled. As they were ready to leave, Mac looked at Peyton. "You go get the car, I'll help Rayne," he answered and Peyton looked at him. "I want to talk to her. You got your chance. It's my turn."

When he walked in Flack chuckled and looked at Rayne. "We'll talk more when you get to the station. I expect that smile to still be there," he teased and she shrugged at him and he looked at Mac. "Be easy on her. The deaths are taking their toll."

Nodding, he sat down beside Rayne as the door closed. "Dr Hunter is going to get a wheelchair as you can't walk for very long to get you to the car," he began and she nodded. "Peyton told me what you two talked about last night. About how that place was considered the final stop for anyone?" She nodded and he carefully took her into his arms and he noticed she slightly began to shake. "I promise. We're not giving you back ever. You won't be given up on. You sadly got picked by two of the most stubborn people in the city." She choked out a laugh and he smiled at that knowing he could get her to laugh.

When Aubrey came in, he helped her carefully get into the chair and as they wheeled out, Mac noted that Rayne did look to be concerned and scared. When they all were into the car, he glanced back to see Rayne looking at the scenery. But when they arrived at the precinct, he kept his facade and he had a weapon on hand. Not that they'd go after him, but he now had Rayne and Peyton to protect. When Flack helped her move from her wheelchair to the seat, he nodded at Mac. "We'll be okay for a while."

"I'm just going to go talk to a few friends about the case. I'll be back in about an hour," Mac warned her and she nodded at him. As he looked at Flack he turned very protective and stern. "I better not hear of one convict touching her."

"Go solve the murders already. I'll do what I need to," Rayne answered and Mac chuckled nodding and leaving her with Flack who then noticed her face and he then chuckled.

"I guess I have to fix one problem before we start solving a murder." He then pulled up a computer program and he had a picture of Rayne from when Peyton and Mac had gotten her smiling the night before and he was there to get a picture. After a few minutes he had it cropped to make her look really silly. "Now if I don't see a smile on that face, I'm going to send this picture to every boy in your school," he warned trying to sound intimidating but playful. He waited a few minutes and then as he saw her looking at what he did to her picture she smiled and began laughing. "There we go. That's better." He then opened the program. "Now relax and just try to think back to what you saw. Could you see how his face was shaped?" He scrolled through options and he then saw her look in thought.

"Like Hawkes's," she answered and Flack smirked grabbing the face shape Sheldon Hawkes had and he looked to her and she nodded. He then showed her eyes and she reached for a pad of paper that he had on hand for her if she could only describe it by a rough sketch. He noted they were almond shaped almost and he then glanced at the drawing and then at her and she nodded. "Smaller though than the picture," she answered. Flack shrunk the eyes down and she nodded. "That's them. They were a deep blue," she answered and Flack looked for the color and put them in and she nodded again.

"You remember a lot about our killer huh?" She nodded and he then looked at her knowing he had to ask. "Rayne, Mac didn't ask me to question you about this, but I want to know. Did you get attacked by the same person because he saw you? Is that how you remember every detail. The eyes and everything?"

"I don't think he saw me," she answered. Flack looked at her and she looked back. "I really don't think he did," she responded assuring him and Flack frowned and she looked at him. "You don't believe me."

He shook his head. "I think you were hoping he didn't catch a glimpse of you. But he saw you from wherever you hid out. So when you were attacked, it was him trying to finish the job and leave no witnesses alive. You didn't leave that house again until 3 days after the murder. Whoever had you to begin with, couldn't be discovered. So he left the bodies. You finally leave the house and he takes his chance. He shot you in the abdomen not once, but twice. This was in hopes of the bullets finishing you off. He didn't realize what a fighter you were. You got back up and began to run away according to cameras. When you got to the Crime lab, we didn't get a clear shot but he slammed your head forcefully into the window mirror of the driver's side. Seeing you fall to the ground and not moving he thought he finished the job. But again, because you were a fighter, you survived," he answered. "That's why I want this description because the better we have, the faster we catch him." He then looked to see what he had next and he saw a nose. "Alright scroll through these and tell me," he began before she pointed to the third from the bottom. "So we have a thin nosed man."

"Yeah," she answered. She then looked at Flack and said something that was on her mind. "Mac will find him?"

"We all will. Mac's already very protective of you. As is Peyton and the others on Mac's team. He has his own preferred detectives and everything. Everyone can't wait to meet you once Mac is guaranteed you're safe to do so. He also wants to make sure that you aren't in harms way before they all meet you," he added as he pulled up lips and she looked through them and shook her head. "Can you remember something distinctive that might give us an idea?"

"I know they were thin but that was because he was baring his teeth at the girls," she responded. Flack thought about it and then got an idea and drew out the lips and then imagined them coming back together and as he showed her she pointed to his third sketch of the teeth being bared and he smirked grabbing the lip shape. "His ears weren't like the typical ear you see. Like the bottom part looked like it was one with his jawline almost." Flack looked up a picture and pointed and she nodded. There was no lobe that was similar to her's or even Flack's.

As he pulled up facial features that were characteristic she pointed to the scar. "Where was it?" Flack knew he had to place it to he had to know. She drew a line over her one eyebrow and he put it on making her nod. He then pulled up hairstyles and she pursed her lips. "Think carefully because there are some styles that are the same somewhat." He then got an idea. "Here. Looks at some hairstyles of my male colleagues. Tell me if you see it." She pointed to Adam Ross and he nodded putting it in. "What color?"

"Dark brown." Flack was about to continue before he realized a reason she might not have identified the lip shape as he looked at Adam's hair. He pointed to the beard on Adam and she pursed her lips. "What?"

"Did he have a beard?"

"No. Like there was a shadow of something but no hair," she explained. Flack smirked going back to facial features and placing a 5 o'clock shadow on the man. "That's him," she answered confidently and Flack smirked sending it off to Mac.

Meanwhile in the lab, Mac got the image on his computer and took it over to the others who were waiting. "This is who Rayne recognizes as attacking the girls," he informed before he got a call from Flack. "Hey. So she drew him up."

"Yeah but here's the kick that I'm afraid of. I discussed it with Rayne and I think it's the only way she remembered that face so well. He saw her witness the crime. So that attack on her that ended just by Peyton's Medical Examiner van," he trailed.

"It was to finish the job. Clear all witnesses and make sure he never got caught. But he didn't anticipate Rayne to survive in the alleys."

"No. He watched for her though and so when she ran down the road and got to the van, she paused as we saw on the video to catch her breath and to try and stop the blood. He used that to his advantage and smashed her head into the window. She was practically lifeless when we found her so he thought what we did. That she died. But again she fought against the odds and survived."

"So we aren't just looking for a murder suspect," Stella breathed looking at them. "We're looking for someone who's going to attempt to take Rayne's life as many times as necessary." She then looked at the picture and frowned. "No convicts with that look. Are we sure it's not the man who had her under lock and key?"

"No. It's not. Rayne just came back with my partner and we made her look at the owner again and asked if she was certain it wasn't him. She assured us it wasn't. She positively denied the owner's involvement in the murder but acknowledged finally that she was a victim of kidnapping even though she didn't know that."

"I'm sure she's not swallowing that pill very easily," Stella answered. "She'll need to talk to someone about that and about what happened to her. Being shot twice and having your head bashed in as an attempted murder, no less a child, would be traumatic."

"She's got an appointment with Dr Jahara," Peyton answered and Stella looked at her. "She worked in London and moved here a year ago. I knew her well," she explained. As Stella and the others looked at the picture they all frowned. "We have to find him."

"It'll be harder than normal. She said the 5 o'clock shadow showed signs of growth. While it can't grow that quick, we now know he has a beard. So he might use a fake one until the real deal grows in."

"He won't get far. Not with us," Mac assured looking resolved to get the answers.
