"Good Merlin, there has to be a better way to do that!" Hollis thought. She sat up, and opened her eyes only to fall back onto the bed she was on and groan from the sudden onslaught of thoughts and memories. "When Death said it would hurt, he wasn't bloody joking was he?" Her head was filled with information about this DImension, who Thanos was, what her powers were and how to use them. It was all incredibly overwhelming.
Apparently, in this DImension it was already 2010 and the technological advances were insane. There was a crazy man flying around in a tin can, a super soldier that had been turned into a popsicle and a giant green creature with anger management problems. Thanos seemed to be an alien of sorts whose planet died out due to overpopulation and a lack of resources which led him to this mad crusade. He also had kidnapped two girls who he raised to be his daughters, but who he treated like weapons. When an image of him flashed through her mind Hollis had to stop herself from comparing him to an overgrown prune.
Her new powers were extensive. She could call on spirits on a moment's notice by simply focusing on them and willing them to show up due to her merging with the resurrection stone. She had full control over her mind and the elements thanks to the elder one attaching itself to her margical core and could turn invisible with a thought. And on top of all that she could do wandless magic as easy as if it were breathing. The events of the past few days had her running on low and with the information overload she was left completely and utterly drained. Laying there, processing everything that she had learned, she drifted off to an uneasy, deep sleep.
When Hollis woke up, the headache had subsided to a slight throbbing behind her eyes. Looking around she saw a large room with dark navy blue walls, white furniture and gold accents. It had a wall full of bookshelves that stored the books she had taken from her vaults and some new additions that Death must've added. In short, it was a Ravenclaws wet dream.
Shaking her head, she got up and walked through an open door into what was apparently her new bathroom. The floors were smooth white tile and all the cabinets were grey wood. Walking in further she saw the shower, and without a second thought, stripped and jumped in. Standing there under the hot water, Hollis' mind wandered.
"What the bloody hell am I going to do with myself now? Any magical career is no longer an option, and I refuse to just laze around all day like Dudley and Ronald do." Finally it hit her. She could do the one thing she'd always done in secret without anyone holding her back. "I suppose it's official then. I can homeschool myself, maybe get a job on the side to keep busy."
With a plan set in her head, Hollis got dressed and grabbed her bag. In her rush, she forgot that she had absolutely no idea where the bloody hell she was. Looking around in the sudden brightness she overhead people speaking in distinctly american accents. Walking around the corner she found a newsstand.
"Merlin save me," she thought, reading the paper and looking up with a disbelieving laugh. "I'm in New York!"
It took Hollis the better part of that day to find her way to a bookstore and buy what she thought she would need to pick up her schooling. Since she had stopped attending muggle school right before what was apparently middle school in the States, she figured she could pick right back up with relative ease. She was actually rather proud of how mundane her day had been in the grand scheme of things and bought herself an ice cream cone as a reward. Hollis should've known better than to celebrate prematurely.
She was walking by what seemed to be a more industrial area that was rather quiet, which, honestly, should've raised her mental alarms, when it happened. One second it was quiet and she was happily licking her coffee ice cream and the next there was the ring of gunfire, followed by a loud explosion and suddenly she was on the ground, her ice cream smushed underneath her and her shirt ruined.
Grumbling, she pushed herself up to her feet and took a defensive stance. "One day, just one bloody day, I don't think that's too much to ask." She was expecting an ambush, maybe a gang fight gone wrong. What she wasn't expecting was a man shouting in what sounded like German and shooting blue lasers from a gun being chased by a man in purple leather shooting arrows. "What kind of shit show did I just walk into?" Thankfully for Hollis she was more used to lasers than she was bullets so when one shot towards her, her war instincts kicked in and she rolled forward, and the man, being surprised that what was clearly a confused civilian somehow out maneuvering him and getting close enough to attack, was shocked to find that he was suddenly disarmed and on the floor.
Blowing a piece of hair from her face Hollis looked down at the man on the floor. Sighing when she saw him ingest something, she reached into her bag and summoned a bozar. Shoving it into his mouth she looked back at the confused, but still alive man.
"What? Did you only have one dose?" she rolled her eyes. "Amateur."
Picking up the laser gun she tossed it to the leather clad archer. "I'm assuming from the fact that he just tried to commit suicide and there's the slight outline of a badge in your pants that you're some kind of authority and this man is a criminal, so you have fun with that and with him. Maybe try to keep a civilian out of it next time, yeah?"
"You don't seem like much of a civilian to me. Who trained you?" he asked in a hard voice.
With a sad look in her eye Hollis replied, "Unfortunately, I am just a civilian and my Godfather taught me most of what I know." Stepping off of the German, she walked backwards and picked up the remains of her ice cream cone. Gesturing to herself she said, "Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to go clean myself up. Good day strange archer, Mr. Evil German man" With a nod to both she turned and jogged around the corner. She heard the archer knock the man out and chase after her so she turned invisible. She saw as the man came around the corner and looked around, his gaze settling at her hiding spot for a moment. She could feel her Chosens try to tell her something through the bond, and looking at the archer leave she knew they'd meet again.
"I have a feeling things are going to get much more interesting sooner than I expected."
With that, she dropped her shields, turned and apparated on the spot, missing the mysterious archer watching from above.
