Chapter 3: Oh So High

Addison woke up to the knocking on the door with a pounding headache. Squinting her eyes she turned away from the blinding light of the morning sun. She felt a bit nauseous and when she started to push off from the bed to get up dizziness hit her like a train. She was angry at herself for having drank so much that she was feeling like this.

After hearing two more knocks she reluctantly got out of bed and answered the door. She was confused when she saw the room service person smiling at her with breakfast.

"I... uh..." Addison began her voice raspy from sleep.

"This was already paid for ma'am. They said your girlfriend left it for you." The woman said happily.

"What?" That woke her up very quickly.

"May I?" The woman said and Addison backed into the room allowing her to bring the cart in. "Enjoy breakfast. She left this for you. And don't worry I didn't read it." She said with a wink handing her a folded paper and walking out of the room.

Addison stared after her for a moment holding onto the note. She looked back at the cart and pulled it with her to bed, sitting at the edge. She cursed at herself as she tried to recall the events from the night before but could not.

"A girlfriend?" She shook her head.

Then remembered the paper she had in her hand. The 'girlfriend' had left her a note. She unfolded the paper to find a delicately handwritten note.

Morning Addison,

Sorry I couldn't stay until you woke but I had to be in the hospital for rounds and you needed more sleep. Hopefully you're not feeling too sick. I told them to make sure you had a good breakfast and some aspirin. I'll see you at the hospital later. You can give me my shirt then.

Yours

Meredith

Addison reread the note three more times, still shocked at the discovery. That woman had thought Meredith, her husband's mistress, was her girlfriend. That had to be a joke. There was no way. What could she possibly have done to have someone think she and Meredith were together?

Wait what happened last night?

Frantically she looked about the room looking for signs of anything, really. She looked down at what she was wearing and low and behold she was wearing a shirt that really was not hers. It was a very comfortable Dartmouth shirt, soft from wear. Her hand shot to her mouth in disbelief.

Why am I wearing her shirt? What the hell happened last night?

She really wanted, needed, to find out but first she needed food and the damn aspirin.

All of Bailey's interns excluding Izzie were in the locker room getting ready. George was in a bad mood because this morning he had had to call a cab to get to the hospital. Alex seemed to be stuck in his head. Meredith was quiet but seemed to have some sort of discomfort. Cristina was the only one acting somewhat normal. They were almost all good to go when George slammed the locker door.

"What crawled up your ass, Bambi?" Alex asked with a raised brow.

"You weren't on call. Where did you sleep? You could've at least told me you weren't going to be home." George said as he turned to Meredith who was gulping some pepto bismol.

"Mer are you ok?" Cristina asked her, eying her suspiciously.

"I think this whole Derek and Finn thing is getting to me. All this stress is giving me an ulcer." Meredith said, hand on her stomach.

"Just McDreamy and McVet? No one else?" Cristina winked at her. Meredith chucked an empty water bottle at her. Cristina caught it and burst into a fit of giggles.

"Let's go, people. We have rounds!" Bailey called from the hallway.

All the interns filled out and followed Bailey much like ducklings do their mother. They managed to get through every patient before Bailey had to hand their assignments. As they walked out of the last patient's room Bailey finally addressed Meredith's state.

"Everything alright Dr. Grey?" She eyed her as she took the chart to the nurses station.

"Yes Dr. Bailey. I just need to make a choice." Meredith said leaning against the wall as she noticed Derek walking towards her.

"Dr. Grey, I'm clipping an aneurysm today. Would you like to scrub in?" Derek asked, trying to woo her.

Meredith looked at him and felt another twinge of pain on her stomach. She looked down to the ground and heard the telltale sound of Addison's heels. Meredith turned to look at her and felt yet another twinge of pain. Her hand shot down to her stomach as the wave of pain had been a bit more aggressive than the rest. Addison knitted her brows in confusion as she noticed the action but walked straight to Bailey.

"Miranda, I was wondering if I could have Gr-" Addison trailed off as she saw a very familiar face with Richard dressed on a Seattle Grace white coat. "Oh, my god."

"Oh my god." Derek echoed as he noted the individual as well.

"Oh god." Meredith said just before she began to throw up.

"Meredith." Derek tore his attention from Mark and placed a hand on her shoulder.

"No." Meredith swatted away his hand.

"But Mer-" he tried again.

"No." Meredith said firmly.

"Are you pregnant?" George asked out loud. Meredith looked up and glared at him.

"Have you and Finn..." Derek trailed off.

"No! Ahhhh." Meredith started to reply to him as yet another wave of pain hit her.

"Alright enough! Yang, take her to get some scans and draw some labs." Bailey commanded. Derek made to follow the two interns but Bailey stood in his way giving him the look so he walked the other way. Meredith was thankful for the tiny doctor.

Cristina led Meredith to an exam room after doing the scans and labs. Meredith's pain was increasing by the minute and she kept clutching onto her stomach. She lay on her side almost in a fetal position with her back to the door. After a few minutes there was a knock on the door. Cristina called to whoever it was to come in.

"Hi, Dr. Bailey wanted an OB to take a look and I was there so I'm here." Addison said coldly.

"Oh. Ok. She's in a lot of pain. I'm going to go get Bailey and see if we can give her something." Cristina said and as Addison nodded she left.

"Alright Grey, could you try and lay flat for me?" Addison said as she wheeled the ultrasound machine over. Meredith winced and whimpered as she did. Addison demeanor completely softened then.

"I'm sorry I'm making you hurt more." Addison added as she helped her straighten up. "There may be something wrong with the pregnancy."

"Not pregnant. No sex." Meredith managed to get out as another wave of pain made her shake.

"Oh. Here hold onto me when it comes again." Addison offered her arm to Meredith, a small smile on her lips.

"Thanks. It's going away." Meredith breathed out as she held onto Addison's arm.

"Alright. Let me take a look here to make sure your uterus and ovaries are ok. It'll be a bit cold." Addison said as she placed the gel and massaged it in with the probe to take a look.

"Addison." Meredith whimpered again as yet another wave hit.

"It's ok. You're ok Mer. Breathe." Addison soothed.

'Mer... sounds prettier when she says it' Meredith thought to herself as she heard Addison address her.

"It looks clear." She announced as a knock came from the door.

"She's got appendicitis. We have to remove the appendix." Bailey said as she walked in with Cristina trailing behind.

"That should be a simple procedure. You'll be fine Grey." Addison said as she turned to her with a smile.

"Good. Grea- ahhhh!" Meredith began but was abruptly interrupted yet again by more pain.

"Why don't we get her something for the pain? Yang, bring me 0.5 ml of fentanyl and let's set up a morphine drip." Addison called out before Bailey had a chance to.

Cristina brought the fentanyl quickly and then left to get the morphine drip set up. Addison took the IV kit to get Meredith hooked on.

"Dr. Montgomery I can do that." Bailey offered but Addison was already disinfecting the area with the needle ready to go.

"It's alright I got it. I'm a pro with needles." Addison said as she flawlessly inserted the needle and set up the IV. "See? All done." She smiled at Meredith who looked at her in awe.

"Teach me!" Meredith said enthusiastically with a smile before a frown took over thanks to the pain.

"Ok, let's fix that." Addison said as she pushed the fentanyl in.

"Thanks." Meredith said after a couple of minutes with a groggy smile.

"Yang let's get her to a room." Bailey ordered as Cristina walked in followed by George.

"I'm on your service Dr. Bailey." He said sheepishly.

"I know now get a move on and get us an OR slot." Bailey said and he was off quickly.

Throughout all of this Meredith had yet to let go of Addison. She smiled up at the attending like an idiot even when the redhead was not looking at her. Suddenly Addison's pager went off and Karev walked in.

"Dr. Montgomery you need to come check on that woman." Alex said bitterly. He was still angry he had been stuck with OB, especially now that Mark Sloan was in Seattle Grace.

"Right." Addison went to pull away from Meredith but she tightened her hold. "Umm... Meredith, I need my arm."

"Ok." Meredith said but did not let go.

"Meredith?" Addison tried again to pull away but Meredith just cocked her head to the side as if confused. "My arm?" Addison pointed out.

"Right..." Meredith said with her idiotic smile. "Wow."

"What?" Addison looked at her.

"Pretty eyes." Meredith simply said and sank herself on the bed closing her eyes.

The room grew silent before George burst in to help get Meredith to a room. His entrance seemed to shake everyone out of their thoughts. Awkwardly, Addison excused herself and followed Alex to the patient's room while Cristina and George took Meredith to her room.

A couple of hours later found Meredith, high on morphine, with Cristina in her room. Cristina had brought a few charts to work on while she watched Meredith. The blonde was humming to some song when Derek walked in, his McDreamy smile in place.

"Heyyy McDreamy's here!" Meredith exclaimed happily.

"Hey there, beautiful." Derek said as he gently caressed her cheek. "Are you happy you have a boyfriend that works at this hospital?"

"You are just one of many people I happen to be interested in." Meredith said with a smile.

"Really?" Derek played along.

"Mmhmm." Meredith responded and as if on cue Finn walked in.

"Hey." Finn said as he walked in with a fruit basket.

"Well I think I got things to do. Would you two keep an eye on her?" Cristina asked, getting up attempting to leave as quickly as possible.

"Look at that Cristina, now I have my McDreamy and my McVet." Meredith said cheerfully.

"You look beautiful even if you're in that bed." Finn said, trying to gain some ground.

"She knows. I already told her." Derek countered.

"Oh god." Cristina rolled her eyes.

"You know who we're missing Cristina?" Meredith said with an innocent smile.

"Mer." Cristina warned.

"McHot!" Meredith exclaimed and whooped.

"McWho?" Derek asked confused.

"McHot." Meredith said in a duh tone.

"Who is that?" Finn asked.

"Meredith." Cristina warned again to no avail because Meredith was already replying.

"Addison Adrianne Forbes Montgomery, of course. Have you not seen her?" Meredith said, a bit irritated. "She's beautiful. She's hot! Why would you ever leave her? I wouldn't have." She continued as a matter of factly.

"That's easy. I love you." Derek said oblivious as to what Meredith was really saying.

"I want Addison." Meredith said, tearing her attention from the two men before her.

"She's working Mer." Cristina explained.

"I want Addison!" Meredith whined. "Derek... Finn... go get me Addison." She continued.

"Meredith, Cristina told you she's working." Finn tried to reason.

"I want Addison." Meredith pouted. "You." She pointed at Finn. "And you." She pointed at Derek. "Go get me Addison."

"What's come over you?" Derek looked at her as if she had three heads.

"It's the drugs, Derek." Cristina said quickly as Meredith began to hum once more.

Thankfully for Cristina Derek's pager and Finn's phone went off simultaneously. They looked at each other trying to challenge the other to speak first.

"I have an emergency case." Finn sighed heavily. "I'll come see you after though, Mer." He leaned over and kissed her cheek sweetly. Cristina chuckled to herself as she saw Derek's face.

"I also gotta go but I'll check in on you before surgery." Derek said with his McDreamy smile and kissed her forehead.

"Are you out of your mind?" Cristina said her hands on her waist and shaking her head once both men were gone.

"What?" Meredith asked with her idiotic smile as she pressed the button for more morphine.

"You're not allowed to have any more drugs after this." Cristina sighed in defeat.

"Cristina... I want Addison." Meredith repeated what she had already said.

"I know but she can't come right now. If you like I could go get her but you need to be quiet. Ok?" Cristina offered and Meredith nodded much like a child would with a smile.

As Cristina gathered her things Meredith saw Addison walk by her door and yelled her name.

"Addison." Meredith called. "Dr. Montgomery!" She called out louder.

"You bellowed, Dr. Grey?" Addison said walking into the room. "You certainly are. Aren't you?"

"I have to go. See ya Mer." Cristina scurried away quickly closing the door behind her.

"Hi." Meredith smiled at Addison as she approached to read her chart.

"Looks like your surgery is coming up." Addison informed her.

"Are you ok? You seem angry." Meredith asked a bit more seriously.

"Fine. And it's nothing to do with you. It's just Karev." Addison said quickly. "How are you?"

"I'm trying to choose between a few people." Meredith said looking at her intently.

"Yeah well..." Addison said, turning around to leave.

"How do you know when someone is the one?" Meredith asked but Addison ignored her and continued walking. "How did you know Derek was the one?"

"Excuse me?" Addison stopped dead in her tracks and turned to face her. She walked back to Meredith standing by the foot of the bed.

"I know you hate me and all. You don't owe me anything. Nothing... no... thing." Meredith said and seemingly lost herself in thought. "What was I saying?" Meredith asked as she noticed her once more.

"Derek..." Addison replied.

"Right. How did you know he was the one?" Meredith asked again.

"Derek is one of those people. I just knew he wouldn't hurt me. Not on purpose not like I hurt him" Addison replied.

"He hurt me. When he chose you." Meredith said.

"I should've let him go. Stepped aside. I should've... a lot of things." Addison said with a sad sigh.

"Me too. A lot of things. But I don't blame him. I mean I still don't get how he could leave you, all leggy and fabulous." Meredith said with a smile. Addison chuckled a bit and looked at her.

"I don't hate you." Addison said after a while.

"How come the only two times we've talked like this we have either been drunk or high?" Meredith asked, tilting her head.

"I don't know but I hope we talk when we are both sober soon." Addison said with an amused smile.

"So so so pretty." Meredith said as she mirrored her smile causing Addison to blush.

"It's time to go Mer." George said as he walked in without knocking as he often did breaking the small moment between them. "Dr. Montgomery, everything ok?"

"Y-yeah. All good here." Addison said quickly, turning to leave.

"Hey Addison." Meredith called.

"Yes?" Addison replied looking over her shoulder. Meredith looked at her with a sweet smile.

"Can you give me my Dartmouth shirt after surgery? You looked hot in it but it's my favorite."

And then there were 3. And oh god was I laughing to myself during this whole thing hehe. Btw there were snippets from the dialogue from Season 3 episode 4. Hope you enjoy it! Please remember to review and tell me what you think. ;)
