Chapter 3

Relena had closed the door slowly and leaned her back to rest on it. She clutched her hand across her heart. "Mommy, are you okay?" Logan had asked appearing right before her. "Yes, I'm okay. Let's get you ready for bed." Relena said picking him up and headed upstairs. Soon as she had settled Logan in bed, Relena made her way to her bedroom and stepped out to her balcony. The cool breeze blew against her hair as she stared up at the starry sky. "Heero…" she whispered.

The next morning Heero left in a hurry without a word. He immediately requested his driver to take him to the hospital. He knew in his heart he wouldn't rest until the truth was certain. Upon arriving at the hospital Heero took time to register what he was about to do. Half of him felt guilty and the other half he felt the urgency. He finally stepped out the car and made his way to speak with a close friend. Heero sat waiting patiently on a metal chair across a reception desk. He held the clear plastic that contained Logan's hair strand tightly. He closed his eyes and remembered Relena's voice echoing in his mind. He couldn't wait to see her again.

"So. You do have time to say Hi." Sally asked emerging from the door by the reception area with her arms crossed. Heero immediately stood up and approached Sally. "I need a favor Sally." Heero said holding up the clear plastic. Confused and intrigued at the same time, Sally took the plastic from his fingers. "Uh, you know what you're asking of me right?" Sally asked. Heero gave her no answer but a serious look. "Blood would have been accurate." Sally said turning around and went inside her office with Heero following after. "Okay, Heero I will send you the results with 72 hours." Sally said as she took Heero's samples and placed them in an envelope along with Logan's. Heero gave Sally a nod with nothing else to say and stepped out of her office. He walked down the hallway, entered the elevator and exited the hospital. He felt as if he was in an unknown trance. He couldn't wait three days, but there was no way to rush Sally. He just needed assurance.

It was Saturday with no plans in mind. Heero thought it'd be nice to take Relena and Logan out on a weekend day out. He scrolled his contacts to find Relena's name and pressed the call icon. It didn't take long for her to answer and when he heard her sweet voice he smiled.

"Hello?"

"Hey, it's me."

"Oh! uh..Heero is everything okay?"

"Yeah, just wanted to know if you and Logan want to go out today if you had no previous plans."

"I…I…" Relena began to stutter. Unsure why it was difficult to reply.

"Are you okay Relena?" Heero asked a little concerned.

"Mommy, I wanna go to the carnival today!" Logan chimed in behind her. Heero couldn't help but smile to himself.

"I take it you're free today. Seem Logan wants to go to the carnival. Mind if I tag along?" Heero asked.

Feeling defeated Relena looked at her son gave him a brief nod.

"What time can you pick us up?"

"I should be there in an hour. Is that too soon?"

"No, that's perfect. It's not too much to ask of you?"

"Absolutely not. I kinda asked remember?"

"Okay Heero, we'll see you soon."

"Hn. See you soon."

As they both ended the call they both weren't sure if it was good idea. Today would be interesting.

Heero decided to head home and change quickly into a more casual and comfortable attire. As he descended down the stairs he heard the sound of the main entrance door open. His mother appeared with a stunned look on her face.

"My word son, I haven't seen you wear outgoing clothes in a long time!"

"Mother, it's a nice day today. I'll see you when I get back."

"I'm just getting a few things before heading back to the hospital. Your father is getting much better."

"I'll stop by later…" he replied approaching his mother.

"Wait. Are you going out on a date?" She asked amused.

"Somewhat."

"Your father is in the hospital and you're going out on a date?"

"Then maybe I should cancel with Relena and Logan if you prefer me to head to the hospital."

Helena's eyes grew wide. She gave her son a very bright smile and squatted his arm.

"You're going on an outing with Relena and Logan! Can I come too?" she said loudly.

"Mother… you're going back to the hospital remember?" he replied with a little snicker.

"Fine, just tell Relena and Logan to join you during your visit later."

"I will ask them mother." He replied giving his mother a brief hug and exited the front door. Helena made her way up the stairs and her eyes fell upon a family photo. It had been taken years ago, when Heero was just about Logan's age. She smiled and thought to herself 'maybe…. Just maybe…'

Heero had arrived on time as expected. Relena was brought to a trance as she took in her boss's appearance for a Saturday. He looked handsome in a white polo shirt and khaki slacks. They weren't dressed in their usual work clothes. Today was different. Today was a day for fun. Heero on the other hand was lost for words when the pair emerged outside. Relena wore a nice blue dress with short sleeves and white sandals. Logan also wore a white polo with khaki shorts. Relena placed a hat on his head and adjusted it until it fit perfectly.

"Ready?"

"Yes, Heero. Let's go…" she replied tugging Logan's hand. Heero opened the door for them and ushered them inside. Something caught Relena's attention. It was the cologne she vaguely remembered. It was from the night they both shared together. That completely burned in her memory. She simply smiled at Heero as he closed the door.

The ride to the carnival was a short one. As soon as they reached the entrance Logan grabbed Heero's hand and pulled him to the gate. Relena retrieved their tickets and turned around to see Logan on top of Heero's shoulders. The sight brought a little pain in her heart but she simply pushed it aside.

"Alright guys, where should we start first?" Relena asked.

"Mommy, can we go to the Ferris wheel?"

"Aren't you scared? It goes up pretty high."

Logan turned to look at the Ferris wheel and said "I want to try Mommy."

"It should be fine Relena. He wants to experience the ride."

"Okay.. okay let's go…"

Relena handed the attendant their tickets and another attendant led them to their cart and closed the door. Relena sat on the cold metal bench and Logan went towards the end waiting patiently for the ride to begin. Heero sat next to her unsure if he should have sat across from her instead. The sound of metal clanking gave them the signal the ride was about to start.

"Logan, have a seat and put your belt." Heero said as he stood to sit in between. Heero checked the seat belt to ensure that it was secured. The ride began and Relena gave a little squeal which caught Heero's attention. They reached the top and sight was breathtaking. Logan's eyes beamed at the height they were in.

"Heero look! Everyone looks like ants!"

Heero gave Logan a little pat on the back. "Feel like you can squish them huh?"

"Yup! Like a big dinosaur!"

Heero gave a chuckle. The other occupant of the cart wasn't as thrilled.

"Logan, let me check on your mom. She hasn't moved."

"Mommy doesn't like being high in the sky."'

"Explains earlier …"

Heero approached her and noticed her eyes were closed.

"Relena?"

"Yeah?"

"Scared?"

"No…"

Heero placed his hand on Relena's. She felt the warmth and opened her eyes slowly.

"Scared of heights?"

"Isn't it obvious?"

"It's okay. I'm here…"

"I.. I know you are. It's just he wanted to go up here." Relena said as she looked at her son who continued to glow of happiness. "Thank you for coming with us today, if he wanted to go on the Ferris wheel I would have said no." Neither of them realized it but their hands were intertwined. Who had initiated it? The Ferris wheel began to move slowly and this time around. Relena began to tense and Heero tightened his hand on hers. Another wave of guilt crept up on Relena. She was relying on him again. She had to keep in mind that Heero was her boss and boss's son. As much as she wanted to be distant from him, it seemed impossible. The ride came to an end and Logan wanted to ride the merry go round. Heero sat this ride out and watched as mother and son board the ride. Relena had placed Logan on an elephant and began adjusting his hat again. The ride began and Heero stayed by the railing watching as the machine make its rounds. Every time Logan would see Heero he'd wave and Relena would wave too. Heero couldn't help but smile but something kept making his mind wonder.

"Hey, Sylvia isn't that Mr. Yuy?" Lyn asked. They both worked for Wing Corporation and decided the carnival was the only lively place to be in town. Sylvia couldn't see clearly as the man in question was facing the merry go ride his back faced to them.

"It couldn't be…"

"I have never seen him in regular clothes. He looks even more handsome now. What could he be doing here at the carnival? Someone like him at a place like this is quite odd."

"He must be here with someone."

"The ride is coming to a stop. Maybe he's waiting for someone to get off. Oh wait he's leaving."

Heero motioned to Relena his intention. He pointed at the food stand and she nodded. He thought it be best to line up now before the line grew longer. Relena and Logan exited the gate for the merry go round ride.

"Mommy, can you take me to restroom?" Logan asked showing his mom number one with his finger.

"Alright let's go, Heero's still in line for food I'm sure."

Relena and Logan exited the restroom and was met with a familiar face.

"Oh so you're here too? Isn't that a coincidence?" Sylvia said as she and Lyn headed towards the restroom.

"Uh, yes we are." Relena replied. She knew that Sylvia did not like her. Their first meeting wasn't a good one.

"We?" Sylvia and Lyn asked in unison.

"Uh, Yes my son and I."

Logan had appeared from behind her. He was afraid of the approach of the two individuals that were bombarding his mother with questions.

"Mommy, can we go now? I'm hungry." Logan asked as he pulled at his mother's bag.

"Are you here with your boyfriend or husband?" "Where's your dad little boy?" Sylvia asked as she looked at Relena then to Logan who went back to stand behind his mother.

"Eh.. oh No. It's just me and my son. His father…"

"Oh, so you're a single mother?" Sylvia asked cutting her off.

"Yes, I am. It's just my son and I." Relena replied hoping the pair would leave them alone.

"Must be sad to be alone, then again you work for Wing Corporation. You even managed to be on the executive floor with me and the presidents." Sylvia said crossing her arms giving Relena a smirk.

"We have to go Ms. Sylvia; I will see you Monday." Relena said as she pulled Logan along with her. She wanted to go home. The way she was spoken to was so degrading. Lyn had felt bad the way Sylvia spoke to their co-worker.

"Syl, what's with the attitude towards Ms. Relena?"

"She probably slept her way around to get where she is."

"That's none of your business. I heard she used to work for Wing Corporation before you did."

"She is actually very nice. She just got back and she's such a hard worker."

"Whatever. She better think twice if she thinks she can step between and I. Her intentions are obvious." Sylvia said as she went inside the restroom. Lyn watched as the mother and son walk farther and farther from view. 'Her son looks so much like .' she thought and went through the restroom doors.

Heero began to worry. It had been well over fifteen minutes and Relena wasn't back yet. His eyes began to wander and caught sight of a honey blonde headed his direction. He gave a wave and Relena smiled.

"Everything okay?" Heero asked as they sat at a nearby table.

"Bad lady!" Logan yelled out as he opened a box of popcorn.

"Bad lady? What bad lady?" Heero said as he placed the plastic straw in Logan's drink.

Relena hadn't said anything. Her eyes began to water and Heero reached out to her face, she pulled away. Heero was surprised at the reaction. He observed her closely and looked at Logan who eating popcorn on one hand and onion rings with the other hand.

"Logan." Heero said with a deep serious tone and continued.

"What happened to Mommy? What happened when you went to the restroom?"

"Umm… bad lady made mommy mad. She asked mommy about boyfriend or husband? Sorry Heero, I got scared."

Heero simply nodded and watched Logan continue eating his food. Heero had many questions to ask Relena. But as he saw her sadness and tears beginning to spill over the brim of her eye. He would wait until she was ready to talk about it. He pushed a corned dog in a basket towards her and went back to survey the crowd. An idea came to mind and Heero stood up to excuse himself.

"I'll be right back Relena. Logan watch mommy for me."

"Okay Heero." Logan replied with a mouthful of popcorn.

Heero found a huge brown bear seated at the middle of a game stand.

"How do you win that bear?" He asked the attendant.

"Five tries. You see that red dot in the middle? Try your best to shoot it with this pellat gun."

Heero nodded and handed him the money. He took his stance and positioned himself. He gripped the gun and pulled the trigger. Almost instantly each bullet hit the red bullet. He stopped to look and placed the gun down. Without a word he pointed at the bear and the attendant reluctantly handed it to him. The attendant stood in complete disbelief. 'How did he do that?'

Heero made his back to where Relena and Logan were sitting. He was happy to see that the corned dog had been eaten.

"For you…"

Relena looked up to see a big brown bear in front of her. She stood to grab the bear from Heero's grasp.

"Thank you Heero." Relena said and gave Heero a brief hug.

"Can you smile now?"

Relena gave a little laugh and nodded. Her tears were gone and her smile came back.

The trio continued to try different rides and made their way down the line of game stands. Heero had won Logan a variety of prizes. Logan was indeed happy and wished that things wouldn't change.

"Relena my mom was hoping you'd accompany to visit my father at the hospital."

"Of course, I'd love that. I'm sure Logan would love to go too…"

"Alright, let's get outta here."

Logan raised his hands up and Heero hoisted him up again on his shoulders leaving Relena to carry all the prizes from the days events. The ride to the hospital had take a lot longer than expected. Logan had fallen asleep in Relena's lap. Upon arriving at the hospital Heero opened the door to take Logan from Relena. They made their way up and the sound of Logan snoring echoed in the elevator. Heero carried him in his arms as Logan's head rested on his shoulder.

Helena heard the door creak open, thinking another nurse making their rounds.

"Mother?"

"Son?" Helena stood and placed her book down on table.

"We're here mother, Logan fell asleep." Heero said as he approached his mother. Helena softly brushed Logan's hair and smiled.

"It seems you had yourself a fun filled day" Richard said as he put the paper down.

"Hello everyone." Relena said from behind Heero.

"Ah, there's our VP in finance. How's everything Relena?"

"Let's not talk about work." Helena said looking at her husband with a warning.

"Alright Alright dear, we won't talk about work."

"Father, what have the doctor's said?"

"I won't be returning to work anytime soon.."

Heero nodded and Relena remained silent. Logan began to stir and he opened his eyes lazily.

"Where are we?"

Heero looked to see if Logan was fully awake. "We are at the hospital." Heero replied.

A loud gasp came from the little sleeper and Heero put him down. "Are you okay now?" Logan asked Richard. "I'm doing much better now that you're here." Richard said giving a chuckle.

Relena couldn't understand why fate had brought her and her son back into the world of the Yuy's. How was she going to explain any of this if word go out. She began feel like the world was caving in on her. Her son was calling her boss's parent's 'grandma and grandpa', she was going on dates with her boss and son. Somehow she knew she was messing up something. Her eyes were glued on the floor and her mind was flooding with questions.

"Relena dear are you alright? You seem to be very quiet dear." Helena asked quite concerned.

"On no Mrs. Yuy I am okay."

"Mommy cry…"

Once Logan had said those words Richard and Helena look to Heero. Almost immediately Heero put his hands up and said "No, it wasn't me!"

"Well, you can be very mean son." Helena said as she approached Relena.

"Bad lady made mommy cry." Logan continued.

Relena had to say something before she made to look like a fool. "It's nothing, a little misunderstanding at the carnival today." She said giving Helena reassurance.

"Mr. Yuy, I am glad that you are recovering well."

"You're going to have to keep an eye on Heero for me."

"Sir?"

"He'll be running the company in my absence. Assist him if you can."

"Ah, I see… of course ." Relena replied with a simple bow.

"You three look exhausted from today's adventure. Go home and get some rest." Helena said sweetly.

"We'll visit you soon! You need keep getting better grandpa!" Logan said loudly.

'Ouch there it goes again' thought Relena when she heard Logan say 'grandpa'.

"Alright, lets head home. Heero?" All she received was curt nod for a reply.

They arrive at Relena's house moments later.

"Thank you Heero for all the prizes! Today was fun! Can we go again?" Logan asked with excitement.

Heero squatted down and gave him a little shuffle on his head. "Of course buddy. Here's my number you can call me if ever you need anything." Heero handed him a little note with his cell number in which Logan placed inside his bag. Logan went inside ahead of his mother and closed the door.

"Thank you again Heero. I will see you Monday morning."

"Relena, whatever happened today. Let me know if I can help with anything."

Relena smiled and gave a nod. She turned to leave not realizing her tears were building up again. Heero could not squash the feelings inside him. He too was disturbed with what had transpired the moment he left them at carnival. 'Who would dare?' He summoned the courage and called out to the one woman who changed his life.

"Relena wait."

He was surprised when she turned to see her eyes glistening with tears. That's all it took and he took her in his arms.

Relena didn't know how to respond to the hug or the sign of affection. She just buried her head on his shoulder and let the tears fall with no words.

Heero was sure that whatever happened today would be delt with.
