Hayleen Spilker's mother had told the story of her birth thousands of times. In fact, she was one that her daughter asked over and over again to laugh at the chaos she had created by wanting to be born so suddenly. According to Ladena Lichliter, her beautiful and loving mother, the nurse had sent her to her house at noon, as it was supposedly a long time before the baby was born, and she had ordered her to return in two hours. Hayleen had ended up being born at two in the afternoon in her own home only with the assistance of her mother's best friend who had arrived at the last minute, after robbing a poor unsuspecting neighbor's taxi, to simply play the role of stopping her in her desperate attempt to come to life.
What Ladena certainly did not mention very often, and especially to people who are not her daughter, is that in addition to having been a quick and painful partum without an epidural, the postpartum had been one of the most worrying moments of her life. Of course, it didn't take long for situations to come that were even more terrifying, like the Flare and the damn virus that she couldn't stop.
Certainly what had happened that afternoon was a closely guarded secret between Dr. Alessa Jhonson, mother and daughter. Not even Randall Spilker knew such important details about his heir. Perhaps deep down Ladena already knew that the father of her baby was not trusted for this momentous matter.
The story had been told to little Lyn by her mother and her aunt Alessa at a very young age because they knew that she was not like the other children, she was much more intelligent and mature, more than capable of keeping such an important secret for her future.
On March 5, almost two years before the Flare, Hayleen Spilker had come into the world with strange marks on her body. Soon her mother and her aunt Alessa found out that the black spots on her collarbone and neck were boy names. At that moment none of them really understood what they meant but they knew it was not normal and a sense of horror and deep concern had settled in Ladena to stay.
It was soon proven that her mother was right. Those marks did not bode well for Lyn's future, she had made the right choice by hiding the marks from her husband and everyone else.
What her mother did not know at that time was that for less than a year there had been births of babies with strange black spots on their skin. It was something that certainly parents and relatives tried to avoid talking about, not for the same reason as Ladena but for fear that something is wrong with their children.
Most of these babies were born with small triangles on the nape that would probably end up hidden by their hair. However, there were four kids different from the rest, since their marks were placed on the right wrist. Those four little ones were children of very important and influential people in the normal world, and even more so in the one that emerged after the Flare. You could say that those fathers and mothers were the masters of the world, if it weren't for their constant power struggles and enmity, and because there were two very influential people who had equal or more power than them, Hayleen's parents. What there is no doubt is that these political influencers ended up playing important roles in the new world, either as scientists or entrepreneurs who own resources of great importance to survive.
Ladena Lichliter had been a major politician but she had resigned shortly after the first cases of the lethal virus began. She was still haunted by the reunion that had resulted in the rise of the Cranks to this day. Despite the fact that she had done her best to prevent it and had voted against it, being present during the deliberate outbreak of world catastrophe gnawed at her. She ended up dedicating herself more intensely to the companies that she owned, in which she had a virtual monopoly on the world's water.
A similar case was that of Hayleen's father. Randall was part of the same council as her mother, they were partners of work and she had sent him several emails in anguish about what had happened despite the fact that at that time they were already divorced. Her father had voted against as well but for more selfish reasons, certainly his companies benefited from what happened in the Flare and it did not bring him any benefit from mass murder. The epidemiological chaos that arose with the virus did not harm him either, it probably even eliminated several competitors, but it did generate a feeling of guilt that led him to work with WICKED.
In the years that followed the emergence of the virus they were investigating and discovering more and more things that would lead to a cure, including the existence of the Immune. All parents with young children affiliated with WICKED, or people interested in whether their child would survive the deadly disease, allowed the organization's scientists to test their children's blood for a result. This is how they soon discovered the genetic peculiarity of those four boys with a triangle on their wrist. In fact all the marked children were immune but the other four were not only immune, but were also genetically perfect.
Over the years, using methods that are better not explained, WICKED obtained all the marked children in his custody and discovered other immune children who did not have any triangular marks on their bodies. Ladena had received help from her best friend Alessa to secretly test her daughter's blood. The results agreed with those of the four children, immunity and genetic perfection.
By the time that had happened her mother was already suspicious of the results and she already knew the reason for the marks. In one of the meetings after the emergence of the virus, she had overheard the conversation between two co-workers, Katie McVoy, the main politician guilty of the global disaster and died due to her own mistakes, and Kevin Anderson, future minister of WICKED. During that talk she discovered that the children of these two had triangular marks on their wrists and that their names were Minho and Newt, names that stained the skin of her own daughter. Later, talking to acquaintances and using her political skill, she managed to discover that many children born with triangles on the back of the neck and that there were only two other kids with marks on the wrist. Ladena was sure the names of the boys were Thomas and Gally.
Lyn's mother had never been very superstitious but lately her faith had been shaken sharply. In the days leading up to the Flare an old man had preached the end of the world as we knew it, and everything he describes in panic was what had finally happened. Of course everyone has tried him as crazy and no one had believed him, but the video that someone had recorded of the old insane was still uploaded to the network for everyone who looked to see it. Luckily for Ladena, the moment she made the decision to visit him and ask about her daughter was one in which the virus had not yet spread throughout the world and it was not that difficult for someone as wealthy and influential as her to visit the clairvoyant without anyone finding out and without major problems.
When she finally sat down in front of the insane Yunik and asked him the question that she had been haunting since the birth of her daughter, the answer was even worse than she imagined. Her daughter would not be affected by the virus and she was the key to saving humanity, as well four influential boys. Yunik describes to her with tears in her eyes that there was a bond between Hayleen and the children that many would call supernatural, they were her soul mates. That connection would also be reflected biologically, their bodies would react strangely to each other and WICKED would want to carefully analyze why their brains behaved like this. Without a doubt, it is worth clarifying that at that time WICKED did not yet exist and that Ladena preferred not to ask about it, she had other preferences such as keeping her baby safe. From what the seer explained, her daughter would be safe physically but not emotionally. Yunik claimed that Lyn would be extremely fertile but only with those boys, since with the others she would be sterile, and that the same would happen with the four monsters (and, in fact, the old man called them that), something like bodies mates described him by mockingly referring to the soulmates he mentioned earlier.
Ladena really didn't feel like explaining exhaustively what the seer had told her but it could be summed up as Newt, Minho, Thomas and Gally being evil incarnate, extremely intelligent psychopaths who would only love Lyn. The fact of being with her would give them the necessary power to guide society in a new civilization that would be ruled by them for all eternity, and in which they would be free to do whatever they wanted to whoever they wanted, which Yunik had affirmed with a terrified glint in the eyes, was terrible for all but the kids marked with triangles. Also being with her would make them happy and they did not deserve happiness. Then she had explained to him that Hayleen would also be extremely intelligent and that she would be different from girls her age but that she was a good person and would not agree with what her soulmates did. In fact, her daughter was going to firmly refuse to fulfill her destiny and would try to avoid at all costs that these four psychopaths complete the bond that unites them and seal their happy future. She describes to Ladena that for this to happen her daughter had to have sexual relations with all the boys and that they were going to force her if she refused.
Finally, seeing the shattered face of politics, the seer added that although his daughter would suffer because that is not really the destiny she wants, since she is not like them and she would never be happy giving them what they need to destroy the world, the Psychopaths are her soul mates and she would love them as much as those monsters would love her.
Ladena had never been more relieved not to have told Randall about the names on Hayleen's skin, she was sure he would have strongly advocated for that fate to be fulfilled. It was probably everything and more than the father of her baby would have dreamed of, her daughter would be queen of everything and the future of their companies would be in the hands of more than capable people. In fact, he should not save competition because everything would be monopolized under the partners of his heiress, and they will save humanity of the virus that he had allowed to release.
By the time WICKED discovered the genes of the four boys and visited the seer, Ladena had already told her daughter about the future that awaited her and the importance of hiding the names on her skin even from her father if she wanted to avoid being handed over those boys on a silver platter.
Yunik who was desperate for help told Kevin Anderson everything he had said to the politic and more, but he claimed that he did not know who the girl was and that no one but him knew what would happen. Before being assassinated by WICKED to prevent the information from leaving that room, he notified them about the bond that would exist between the four boys and that the marked important characters for the future regime that would be formed and the survival of the human species, since they would have specific roles to fulfill, special abilities, and completely loyal to their kings. Before closing his eyes forever, he mentioned some very important proofs that would take place.
Over the years the children were trained in the WICKED barracks and were fully aware of the future that awaited them and what they had to do to fulfill it.
