Batgirl slowly emerged from the chemicals. Her mind felt all fuzzy.
What happened to her?
Harleen was smiling. Her smile was full of glee.
Joker and Batman looked at her in awe. Joker was especially enthralled. He had finally broken one of the bats.
Now Batgirl, just needed to succumb to the madness.
Barbara went over to Harley and tried to kick her in the face, but she dodged it. Batgirl tried to swing again and this time it connected with the target. The punch landed right on the side of Harleen's face!
Barbara felt fuzzy and confused. Her mind seemed to be splitting, like a fork in the road.
On one side, she had her normal conscience. The other side had a different type of conscience. It was desperately trying to get to her. There was a wave of terrible solutions, types that only a madman would find funny.
She grabbed her head and tried desperately to find the normal road, but it was disappearing, faster than footprints when it rained.
Of course, now everything seemed to be strangely funny to her. What did Harleen do?!
The jester looked at Barbara. Her eyes filled with devious wonder. "What's the matter, Bratgirl?"
It was getting harder to focus and stay...sane. The heroine had to desperately hold onto it all.
Harleen crossed her arms. "Though, it would probably be best if you change your name. It doesn't seem to fit anymore."
Barbara was confused about what Harleen was talking about? What did she mean by changing her name?
The heroine struggled to look up. "W-What do you m-mean?"
"Well...let's just say that…" Suddenly a lightbulb filled her mind. "Hold on! Let me show you!" She went over to a crate and looked all over for something. When she found it, Harleen went back over to Barbara.
"You want to see what I mean?" Asked the jester.
She pulled out a small mirror and let Batgirl see her face, see what she did.
Barbara was horrified! It couldn't be her reflection!
The face staring back at her looked exactly like Barbara, but there were a few changes.
First, her skin wasn't a normal peach color anymore. It was pale as the moonlight, same as Joker and Harley Quinn.
She touched her face, trying to see if the peach color could return to her face.
But it was permanent.
Her Iris had become a deep and expressionless red. Barbara's hair was the same, but the color was now black, as black as Batman's suit.
That wasn't it either. Last thing that changed was her lips. They weren't a normal red color anymore. Her lips now had a dark shade of black that matched her hair.
Barbara couldn't believe herself. She looked just like Harley and the Joker. Her father would hate her.
She grabbed her face and looked at the ground, crying. What had she become?
Harley smiled and walked over to her. "Dontcha cry. I can help you."
The heroine ignored Harley. She didn't want to hear her voice. This was all her fault!
The sounds and voices in her head were getting more malicious. It was getting harder to keep a grasp on reality.
What mattered anymore? Should she care?
"You alright, Barbara?" Asked Harley.
Her ears were covered. There was a ringing sound that was driving her crazy! In fact, Barbara thought she was starting to go crazy!
She looked like a freak! Another insane individual that belonged in Arkham. There was no way she could return to college, or let her father see her ever again.
But she was angry! There was a reason she looked like this! All of it was Harley's fault! That insane ex-psychiatrist!
"Why don't you smile? It'll make you feel better." The clown girl said.
"Shut up, Harley!" Commanded Batman.
Bruce was in shock. What could he do?
Harleen looked over at Batman. "Quiet B-man! I'm trying to make someone feel better!"
All her fault! All her fault! All her fault! All her fault!
It kept repeating in her mind. She needed to make Harley pay! There had to be drastic consequences.
Slowly Barbara looked up until her eyes were locked with Joker's henchgirl. Barbara's eyes burned with hatred.
Next thing, she smiled at her, showing off her pearly white teeth. Harley was happy. She and Joker had broken her and now there was another crazy person that would end up in Arkham!
Surely, that would drive Batman to insanity!
"You know Harley, all these years I've followed a code. A code of honor." She looked at her with a grim and sadistic smile. "But you never learn, do you?"
Harleen backed away in fear. "Could you stop? You're scaring me."
But Barbara didn't stop. She didn't want to. In a way, watching Harley be frightened was so...satisfying!
"You think I'm going to hurt cha?" Asked the heroine. "Scared? You should be. Look what you did to me." Barbara looked at her hands. "What type of enjoyment do you get out of seeing someone go crazy?" She clenched one hand and looked back up at Harleen. "I don't know what to think anymore. I think compassion, sympathy, love, and other things. They are out of my grasp. Something I can't get back."
Harley was really starting to regret what she did. Barbara was scaring her and that smile...it was creepy and unsettling.
"Did you really think that this was a good idea?" She looked over at Joker and Batman. "For years, I've let you go, Joker. I've followed your orders, Batman. Locked you in Arkham, Joker." She darted her eyes back at Harleen and laughed a little. "But now," Barbara put one hand on the ex-psychiatrist's shoulder. "I think it's time to meet your maker!"
Before Harley had time to react, Barbara had put her hands around her neck. She was squeezing, making it hard for Harley to breathe.
Barbara kept her insane smile as she was trying to kill Harley. "Isn't this funny?! Why aren't you laughing?! This is what you wanted!"
Harley tried to speak but couldn't. The words coming out of her mouth, desperately said that they couldn't breathe.
Batman rushed over to Barbara. He tried to grab her, but the heroine punched him in the gut.
"Buzz off!" She yelled.
While this was happening, Joker was laughing. Laughing at the insane individual he and Harley created.
"Barbara stop! You're killing her!" Batman spoke while trying to grab Barbara.
The heroine looked at Batman with a cold and emotionless look in her eyes. "That's the point."
"I didn't train you to become like them. This is what Joker wants!
Barbara ignored Batman and kept squeezing. Harley's face had now turned blue. Any second now and she would be dead. Or maybe she should snap her neck. That would be faster!
Suddenly, Batman grabbed Barbara and was able to throw her into some boxes. Harley fell to the ground.
