Quick author's note: In this chapter there is a part where Kurt tries to k*ll himself. I don't know much about overdoses so please forgive me if I didn't write it the way it would've happened in real life. This is the only chapter with a part like this. The rest is only going to mention it like in the previous chapters. Thank you3
~Part 3~
Sam POV
When he got the call from Finn, Sam wrapped up everything he was doing. He told the receptionist on his way out where he was going and he'd be in early the next day to make up work. Sam drove home as fast as legally possible, and parked in the driveway about twenty minutes later. He got out of the car and went to the front door. He unlocked the door and went inside. Finn said Kurt was on the couch but he wasn't anymore. Sam put his stuff down and walked around looking for Kurt. That's when he noticed the bathroom door was closed. It was never closed unless someone was inside. Sam tried the door knob but it wouldn't open. Kurt had locked himself in…
Ten minutes earlier
Kurt POV
Kurt was staring at himself in the mirror. He took ten. Ten pills and hopefully all his pain would be gone. Hopefully. In the show they ended up saving the man that overdosed. As long as Sam took his time, Kurt would be long gone by the time someone found him. He started to feel tired and dizzy. Kurt used the vanity to support him but it didn't work. Kurt fell to the floor and started to gasp for air. It was happening. It was working. Then Kurt thought of Sam. He thought of how Sam would react to seeing his fiancé laying on the bathroom floor dead. Kurt started to cry as he tried to fight it. Ten was enough. Ten was perfect. The perfect amount to make sure there was no going back. Not unless someone got there quick. Kurt wanted to do something but there was nothing to do. So, he laid there until everything went dark.
Current time
Sam POV
Sam reached to the top of the doorframe where the key to open the door was kept. He quickly unlocked the door and opened it. Then he saw him. His precious, beautiful, perfect fiancé, laying on the bathroom floor. Sam kneeled next to him and rolled Kurt onto his back.
"No. No please Kurt. Please come back to me," Sam begged.
Sam looked around the bathroom and saw the bottle of Tylenol. It was open and sitting on the vanity. Kurt did this on purpose. Sam quickly pulled out his phone and called 911. He told them what was going on and as soon as the call ended, his full attention was on Kurt. He held his hand and stared at Kurt's face. Tear stains ran down his cheeks and Sam knew he regretted it. He knew that as soon as it started to happen Kurt wanted to go back. But it was too late. A few minutes later Sam heard the sirens. Three paramedics came in with a stretcher and set it up next to Kurt and Sam.
"They're here now baby. They're gonna help you," Sam told Kurt.
One of the paramedics put her hand on Sam's shoulder. He looked up at her and then back at Kurt. He couldn't let go. What if this was the last time, he'd ever be able to be with him?
"You have to let go of his hand now. We need to bring him to the hospital," the lady said.
"I can't leave him," Sam told her.
"You don't have to leave him. You can come in the ambulance with him, but you have to let go so we can get him on the stretcher," she explained.
Sam nodded a little and reluctantly let go of Kurt's hand. The other two paramedics carefully lifted Kurt onto the stretcher and started to get an IV ready. They put in Kurt's left hand and started bringing him to the ambulance with Sam following closely. After they put Kurt in the ambulance, Sam got in and sat down next to him. He looked at Kurt's face and saw the tear stains again. He took his thumb and gently wiped them away before taking Kurt's hand.
"You're gonna be ok Kurt," Sam told him.
The ride to the hospital was silent other then the beeping of the machines making sure Kurt stayed alive. Sometimes the monitors would start beeping louder and faster. The two paramedics that were in the back with Sam and Kurt would start injecting different medicines into his IV and pushing on his chest. It only happened three times before they made it to the hospital and took Kurt inside. They brought him to a room and when Sam tried to follow, they stopped him.
"You can't come in yet sir," the nurse told him.
"I'm his fiancé! You have to let me be with him," Sam said.
"I'm sorry but we need as much space as we can get," the nurse replied.
"What if he's scared when he wakes up? I need to be there for him," Sam begged.
"I'm sorry," the nurse said.
Sam sat down in a chair in the hallway while the nurse went into Kurt's room and closed the door behind him. Sam played with his thumbs and bounced his leg while he waited. He could here the nurses and doctors rushing around inside. Occasionally a nurse would run out of the room and come back a few moments later with a medical cart or bag. Every time the door opened, Sam hoped one of the nurses would tell him he could go in but they never did. None of them even acknowledged he was there. About an hour and a half after they had gotten to the hospital, the door opened and a nurse stepped out of the room. Sam didn't hear the footsteps of other nurses and doctors on the other side of the wall and his heart pounded.
"You can go in now," the nurse told him.
Just as Sam stood up, he heard the monitors beeping faster and louder again. He heard people running around inside the room and yelling. Sam ran into the room and looked at what was going on. Kurt had woken up and he was thrashing around on the bed screaming. Three nurses were trying to hold him down while another one prepared a syringe.
"No!" Sam yelled at her.
Everyone in the room – including Kurt – froze and looked at Sam.
"S-Sammy?" Kurt whispered.
Sam rushed over to Kurt and the three nurses backed away. Sam instantly pulled Kurt into a hug and held him close. All the nurses and doctors watched as Kurt's heart monitor slowly went back to normal.
"You can't do that to me Kurt. I-I got home and- and you were just lying there," Sam said.
"I'm sorry," Kurt cried.
Sam held Kurt tighter and let him cry into his shoulder.
A few hours later, Kurt and Sam were cuddling on the hospital bed. Kurt was fast asleep but Sam was still awake. Every once in a while, Kurt would whimper or start to cry and Sam would just rub his back and softly whisper to him that everything was ok and he was there. Sam knew it would take a while for Kurt to be himself again but he was willing to wait. He was just happy Kurt was safe.
Kurt POV
Kurt woke up to the feeling of Sam's arms wrapped tightly around him. He nuzzled his face into Sam's chest and listened to his heartbeat. It was calming. He felt Sam's hand on his back start moving.
"Hey baby," Sam said softly.
"Hey Sammy," Kurt replied.
"How did you sleep?" Sam asked.
Kurt shrugged. "Fine, I guess. I kept having nightmares though," he told him.
Sam kissed Kurt's head and gently played with Kurt's hair. He loved that. The feeling of Sam's fingers running through his hair always helped him relax. "They'll go away baby," Sam told him.
Kurt nodded. "I hope they go away soon. I feel like I barely got any sleep but I can't fall back asleep," Kurt sighed.
Sam wrapped sat up and took Kurt's hand.
"Are you hungry baby? I can get you some food. Maybe after that you'll be able to fall asleep," Sam suggested.
Kurt held onto Sam's hand tightly. "Don't leave," he said quickly.
"I won't leave you but if you're hungry I can get you something from the café and bring it back," Sam said.
Kurt shook his head. "If you leave, they're going to start doing tests on me or make me talk to someone and I- I just can't right now," Kurt told him.
The nurse had mentioned to Kurt earlier while Sam was in the bathroom that he would have to have a few tests done and talk to a therapist about what happened. He didn't want any of that. It wasn't like he had ever tried anything like this before. He wasn't addicted to drugs. He just got overwhelmed. At least that's what Kurt told himself. That guy just pushed him too far. He just needed a break from everything. Kurt's biggest fear was if they made Sam sit with Kurt during his inevitable therapy session. If Sam was there, Kurt would have to tell him what was going on too. He couldn't do that. He'd been lying for too long.
One month ago
Kurt was walking home after a long day at work. He was just getting to the driveway when he heard someone behind him. He turned around and saw a group of guys walking towards him. They were all twice his size and had tattoos covering their bodies. Kurt started to walk faster but one of them caught up to him and grabbed his arm.
"What do you want?" Kurt asked.
"You live here?" The guy asked.
"Yeah. So?" Kurt said.
"I heard two dudes live here and they're engaged," the guy told him.
Kurt tried to pull his arm away. "What if we are?" He asked.
The guy smiled and Kurt knew what was coming. By now the other men had surrounded Kurt and the guy holding his arm. Kurt suddenly felt a knee hit his stomach. He fell to the ground and curled into a ball as he tried to cover his head and face. All of the guys surrounding him started to kick and punch him. Kurt felt pain everywhere and eventually everything went dark.
Kurt woke up to the feelings of gentle hands brushing his hair out of his face and soft whispers.
"Kurt? Come on baby. Wake up now," he heard Sam say.
Kurt slowly opened his eyes. He expected light to instantly blind him but all the lights were off and every window in the room had the curtains closed. Kurt lifted his hand to meet the one stroking his cheek.
"Oh, thank god," Sam said. "I thought I was going to have to take you to the hospital."
Kurt brought Sam's hand to his lips and kissed it. He felt Sam's lips against his forehead and couldn't help but smile.
"Baby, I found you on the ground outside. You were unconscious and there was blood all over you. What happened?" Sam said.
He couldn't tell him. It would break Sam's heart. So instead, he made up the best lie he possibly could and hoped Sam would believe him.
"I fell on the way home. I tripped on a garden hose and hit my head on some stairs. It was on a hill so I rolled a little. I guess I passed out before I made it inside," Kurt said.
It was a very complex and kind of horrible lie but Sam took it and that was all that mattered right now.
"Oh my god Kurt. I'm so sorry. Are you still in pain? Do you want any medicine?" Sam asked.
Kurt nodded.
"Ok baby. I'll be right back," Sam said.
Kurt watched as Sam got up from where he was sitting next to the bed and went into the bathroom. He didn't turn on any lights – thank god – but came back just a few moments later with Tylenol. Kurt took some of the medicine and let Sam cuddle up next to him in bed. They laid there all night and anytime Kurt ever whimpered or winced because he moved onto one of his cuts or bruises wrong, Sam rubbed his back and murmured soft and loving words to help him relax. A few times, Sam tried to mention taking Kurt to the hospital for his injuries but every time Kurt shot the idea down, insisting a nice warm bath and some rest would make him feel better. Eventually Sam gave in and the two fell asleep shortly after.
