Chapter 3

Mikasa is utterly incensed.

No one seems to believe her, but she can't blame them. She's a bit consoled by the fact that Levi here hasn't laughed at her though. Furlan Church, she learns his name, is Levi's roommate. He tells her a lot about Levi. According to him, her supposed previous captain is a genius programmer who lives discreetly. Away from the spotlight. Even though Mikasa has no clue what kind of job a programmer really does, he assures her it's a modest and legal job.

She has grown to like Furlan in the little time he spent with her. He's hospitable, unlike the certain someone that resembles a certain someone she knows. He also tells her that when Levi was 12, he accidentally created a virus that massively impacted the economy all over the world. Within just three days, ninety million infections were reported. Unsurprisingly, the virus dominated the news headlines globally and then, he was caught. Again, she doesn't understand it fully, but she compares it to the epidemic after the rumbling. She was confused but she still listened intently.

This land is called Japan. And Levi is said to be from Germany. Mikasa has never heard of such places in the past. But the Levi here is as amazing as her previous captain. It is said that this country recognized his brilliance and offered him citizenship in exchange for education and a job where he will keep himself off the fusses. Furlan says, it naturally favored Levi for he is the type of person that awful with publicity. Exactly like her captain.

The government provides for his needs and pays him abundantly. He lives frugally though.

And he seems to hate her presence.

"Are you done dressing up?" She hears Levi knocking on the door cautiously.

She draws a deep breath and glances down at her outfit. A small-sized, white collared-shirt and a pair of pants that doesn't quite reach her ankles. It was brought by the red-haired girl who introduced herself as Isabel Magnolia. The undergarment for the chest though, seems so complicated to use. "Yes?" She answers with uncertainty.

Levi opens the door and finds the brassiere his friend brought earlier lying on the floor. "What's that? You're not wearing any?" His dull eyes drop on her chest. "You are not."

Mikasa doesn't seem to be bothered. Levi from the past or future resemble each other so much. Except the future Levi looks younger and less stressed. With an equally straight face, Mikasa replies casually. "It's bandaged." She puffs her chest out to prove her point, bracing herself to whatever foul comments that's about to come out from the same mouth of the same face.

However, the heat rising to his face betrays her expectations of him. Suddenly, she feels embarrassed. Her previous captain would never show such raw expression. "What are you, a lady samurai?"

Mikasa has heard of the samurais from the Azumabitos. They were hailed from Hizuru and were honorable warriors who wielded sharp weapons to protect their masters and themselves. She tilts her head to the side, keeping her rash disgrace under control. "I heard about them. Although I also wield blades, I don't think my beliefs are befitting to become one–"

"You're missing my point, Mikasa." He interjects and Mikasa's heart skips a beat. Even the way he speaks of her name sounds like her previous captain. "You're wearing Isabel's clothes." Levi points out. Mikasa nods in agreement. "Clothes of an underdeveloped brat. We are going to the police station and stinky men dominate that world. You said you were a former soldier, have you always been like that? Even I can tell you should wear something in there."

He nags just like her previous captain. Mikasa looks away, now more self-conscious. Her shoulders start to slouch but she tries to keep her face straight. The slight blush creeping on the tips of her ears betrays her attempt to feign indifference though. "I don't know how to use it, Captain."

She expects him to laugh, but he doesn't. Instead, he walks toward his closet and pulls something resembling a cloak, but obviously not a cloak. It looks like a skirt with pants. He throws it to her and she easily catches.

"Wear that over your clothes." He leans his back on the wall, crossing his arms against his chest. It looks so familiar to her that she is reminded of her previous captain's habit. "And don't call me captain anymore. I'm Levi."

Reluctantly, she blinks and murmurs a small okay as she stares hard at the peculiar clothing. Unsure as to how she will wear it over her clothes and why he is still staying to watch her. She doesn't want to admit it out loud, but she doesn't know how to wear another complicated piece of cloth.

Mikasa refuses to embarrass herself further and Levi seems like he isn't going to budge anytime soon, his steely eyes glued to her in anticipation. She concentrates and finds a big hole that she immediately assumes is the opening. So, she lifts one leg to shoot it inside, but even before she can continue, she hears Levi clicking his tongue.

He's pissed, she can tell.

With one leg suspended in the air, her body slouched forward, and the opening of the cloth being held steady by her arms, Levi grabs the clothing off her without warning. Mikasa lets out a small squeak as she stumbles backward. As soon as she balances her feet, she stands in stiff formation out of habit.

"This is a hooded jacket for your upper body, not the legs. It works like a coat." He instructs seriously as he forces it over her head which greatly surprises her. "You wear it like this."

She suddenly wants to bury her chin under her scarf but realizes that she doesn't have it. Once her head pops out of the hole, she asks, "Have you seen my scarf when you found me?"

Levi furrows his brows and snorts, "You were bare-naked when I found you." He pushes one of her arms inside the sleeve. Mikasa is amazed at how such warm clothing exists. It is indeed like a coat and cloak combined, it works magic like her scarf too. "You don't have anything on you." He says quietly.

Hearing this, she bites her lower lip in anguish until she can taste her own blood. She is still in the dark, but she prays her scarf is safe somewhere. Anything but the scarf. Not Eren's memento.

He seems to have noticed her sudden gloom and decides not to press further. A flicker of conflicting emotions flashes across his face but as soon as it came it vanished. "I'll get you back home." He says, unexpectedly softer than she's used to. Thinking that this Levi and her Captain Levi are the same, is a mistake. They're not. And his attempt to comfort her seems to be working.

He stares at her and she almost squirms under his gaze. She's still taller than him by a few centimeters but it feels like he's bigger than her. He's sizing her up. "Thank you, Cap – Levi." She corrects herself.

He walks away without acknowledging and slams the door shut. She hears him shout, "We'll get you some shoes to wear."

Captain Levi in her timeline is dreadfully difficult to comprehend. Mikasa can never assume nor confirm if her assumptions about his thoughts are correct. When he talks, he usually gives off the opposite message he really means. He's awfully honest as well. She begins to wonder if she'd be able to read Levi in this timeline. A ghost of a smile flickers across her features as she stares at the door.

"We should bring Mikasa-chan along. How are we supposed to know her size?" Furlan tries to convince Levi as he inserts one foot inside his sneakers.

"Hange's is too big, Isabel's too small. Then we take just the right size–"

Furlan sweat drops. True enough to Levi's claims, the two girls asked Mikasa to try on their shoes last night. But, "What the hell is the right size?"

Levi opens the front door, his back facing his friend. "Not too big, not too small."

Furlan has long given up in examining how Levi's brain works. He's a genius after all. He groans as he taps the toe cap of his snickers against the tiled floor. "My, my. Whatever that right size is, a normal person like me would never know." He then steps out and trails off after he closes the door.

And when Levi says just the right size, he means buying all sizes in between Hange's and Isabel's sizes. Furlan can only shrug. Levi has money to spare anyway. He chooses a brown ankle-boot. Furlan tries to persuade him to get a more feminine and cuter style but he doesn't yield. "She won't be staying long." Levi reasons.

"She's still a girl, though. She must love cute things." Furlan whistles smoothly.

"Stop." Levi warns as he hands his card over to the cashier. "Don't get too attached. She's not a character in your otome games."

Furlan blushes, "I know." As expected of Levi, he can always see through him. While outwardly, Furlan seems to be very easy-going and flirtatious in nature. In all actuality, he is not good with interacting with women. Before he met Levi, he was socially awkward to girls. With the exemption of Isabel and Hange, in which he doesn't seem to perceive as womanly. He corrected this by playing hundreds of dating simulation games and eventually creating them which seems to work as he found himself being able to confidently talk to girls without being all cringey and embarrassed while doing so.

Once done, they come back and find Mikasa waiting by the door. Levi hands her three boxes of shoes. "We don't know your size, so wear the pair you think is the most comfortable."

She says nothing and lays the boxes in front of her as both boys stare at her in anticipation of her reaction. They get nothing. She is as expressionless as Levi. She tries on all the pairs until finally, she wears one. She fixes the boxes in order and sets it aside.

She stands stiffly as she looks back at them. "I'm going home."

Furlan nods with a smile, Levi agrees with a curt, "Right, let's go."

And off they go to the police station.
