Chapter Two
FBI Headquarters…
Same time….
Colby was looking at similar reports while waiting for Don to finish his phone call with Director Merrick and smiled as he sat in his friend's office.
"Yes, sir, thanks for the heads up and for the backup you are sending us, hopefully we can figure out what is going on." Don said as he continued with the conversation with Merrick with Colby half-listening as he thought about the case.
Two dead agents and a man who was head of the Forensics wing of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, who was in town to help look into a cold case involving a Senator's daughter who went missing back in the 1990s. Mark Walaker was brought in because they believed they had found something related to her disappearance and he was considered one of the best in the country.
The first agent, Agent Barry Menendez of the ATF, was stationed in Las Angeles and both Colby and Don knew of him by reputation as he was considered one of the most competent and well respected agents in his field and was currently working an investigation of a stolen shipment of experimental guns, details they are still trying to find out but the business responsible for the guns promised they will give the information they need.
The second and final agent, Agent Sofia Lorenson of the DEA was involved with an investigation that the FBI was helping with into an international drug trade. The drug, labeled Drug X, was a relatively new drug that has proven fatal to the majority of its users, most of whom were already users of heroin and/or meth. She and Colby actually worked together in CID on a couple cases, so Colby was glad to see that she also joined a federal agency after leaving the army.
'It's too bad, she did very well in CID and it looked like she did just as well in the DEA, which makes this case even worse.' Colby thought to himself.
Don got off the phone and turned to Colby, clearly annoyed that both the DEA and the ATF wanted in on this case but he couldn't blame them. These were their people and Mark was a well known consultant for those agencies too, further complicating the case slightly but he was still glad to receive some help in addition to Charlie's consulting.
"The two agencies sending in some people?" Colby asked
"Yep, and the two agents will be here tomorrow, along with a co-worker of Walaker's to help us shift with his work to see if it's relevant to the case." Don answered.
"Has the lab identified the poison that killed all three of them?"
"No, and it could take awhile before they can identify what it is and where it could have possibly come from." Don said, finding it such a strange way to kill someone, not something that is usually done to federal agents, not these days anyway.
"So anyone that any of the three have dealt with in the past that could explain who the poisoner is?" Colby asked.
"For Menendez and Lorensen, it doesn't look like it so far but it is still a big suspect list and for Mark, not so far either but we still don't know all of his acquaintances, so that is a possibility."
"Have you heard from Charlie yet?" Colby asked.
"No but he did say he will stop by later to see how we are progressing on our end and see if that will help him."
"Whiz kid would definitely find something we haven't, like he always does." Colby said with a smile.
"He sure does." Don said with a smile before asking Colby, "Is there any personal or professional connection between the three?"
"Nothing that we have found so far but Megan and Nikki are looking through their personal calendars and cross checking cases they may have worked on together."
"All right, see what else you can find out about any possible connections between either of the three and keep me posted Colby." Don said
"Got boss, and tell Whiz Kid that I'm looking forward to meeting you guys for dinner tonight." Colby said with a smile.
"I will and I look forward to seeing you and Liz there tonight." Don said with a smile.
Colby blushed and walked out of the office to get back into the case.
