Chapter 1: Portal Incident
Ancient China
Kara bolted awake. Iit was still dark out, shortly before the sunrise. Her abrupt motion woke Mulan.
"Kara… why…" grumbled Mulan drowsily. Kara didn't notice her wife's complaint, instead running to the room where Heliu and Ruhuo slept. Her twins were gone! Then she sprinted to Rong and Mai's room - they weren't there either!
"Mulan, wake up!" Kara shook Mulan's shoulders. "The children are missing!"
Mulan was quick to kick out of bed, a tangle of sheets and pillows flying off the mattress. She figured she could put them back later. "Where do you think they went?" asked Mulan, attempting to hide her panic.
"I have no idea!" Kara threw her arms up. At that moment, Shang came in. He had been training in the garden but the commotion indoors broke his focus.
"Can somebody explain what's going on?"
"Our children are missing!" Kara snapped. "We have to…"
Just then, a hole opened in the space in front of them. Behind it was a different scene, a bird's eye view. It showed a shining silver-blue cove, surrounded by chalk cliffs to the east and a sparkling silvery-white beach to the south. Nobody had time to react before they were all sucked in.
