Tenth grade: September
Misaki knew that it was wrong of her to doubt Tamaki's strength. He had proven countless times that he could be incredibly powerful when he wanted to be. Confidence was a strange thing when it came to her indigo-haired friend. She noticed that he would have these moments of pure and utter determination and, with a blink of an eye, they'd be gone. It truly, and honestly, didn't make any sense to her. Brushing back a strand of hair, Misaki sighed, lightly bouncing on the balls of her feet as she waited for Mirio to answer the door.
"C'mon, loser," She muttered, raising her fist to knock once more, "We can't be late—we'll give Tamaki a heart attack."
The crisp, late summer breeze felt nice against her skin. Even with the uniform and tights she wore under the skirt—what other pervs laid in wait, she didn't want to know—Misaki didn't feel overheated. Then again, she rationalized, it was only the morning. Before she left for school, her parents made sure she drank some coffee. It was easier this way; it was harder for her to fall asleep when she had caffeine running through her veins.
"Hey, Misaki!" Mirio's bright voice dragged her from her thoughts. Glancing up, she wasn't surprised to see that the uniform looked great on him. While hers clung a bit too tight to her hips and her mom had to modify the waistline of her jacket a bit, she felt awkward in it. Maybe it's just not my color, Misaki wondered, absentmindedly pulling the hem of her skirt as she smiled at her friend. "Sorry you had to wait for me—my mom wanted to make sure she got pictures and all that. Are you excited?"
Misaki laughed, the sound holding a strange mix of lazy cheer. No matter how much coffee she drank, how many horror movies or thrillers she watched, there was always some aspect of her that sounded tired. It bothered her. A silent bother that no one except herself knew about. Sometimes she wished she could always be as energetic as Mirio; but, in those moments where her eyes sparkled with the same excitement, the fog that often covered her mind faded, and her all she wanted to do was run, she remembered the drawbacks of it all.
Her quirk was so tiring. To be in the constant state where her body craved sleep—that made her bones yearn to lay down and begged her eyes to close (even if it were just one moment)—and only becoming awake when someone else's light was so high. Her dad explained it to her in the simplest of terms: she simply absorbed the light someone gave off. Yet, for it to work properly, she needed to be around someone who was constantly awake—constantly excited and ready for whatever was to come. Basically, Mirio. She latched onto his light and her body used it to create her own.
"I am!" Misaki responded with just as much vigor, nodding her head before leading him towards their next stop.
Like syrup dripping from a tree, or honey slowly oozing out of the bottle, she began to feel life. Twisting her fingers into the thick cloth of her jacket, she listened to Mirio as he spoke about his morning. Life crept through her veins, fueling her much more than the coffee did, the familiar hum buzzing through her.
"Do you think Tama-chan's freaking out?" She asked, blinking owlishly at Sunshine. A soft smile pulled her lips, a slight bounce in her walk, Misaki felt alive. Reaching for Mirio's arm, she held it tight and stared at the black numbers that sharply contrasted against the grey background. 7:47, she mused, biting her lip and let him go, "He definitely is."
"Don't worry, Misa-chan," Mirio laughed, "He'll be fine."
Misaki scoffed, slightly offended that Mirio thought she was concerned. She wasn't, mind you. She just wanted to know whether or not they'd have to deal with an 'more-anxious-than-normal' Tamaki, or wake him up. Misaki didn't remember him fainting this much in the manga…maybe it was because he was still young? Ah, she lightly shook her head, ignoring the strands that tickled her lips, whatever the case, he's going to be amazing no matter what…they both are.
"I'm not worried," She stated, "I just want to know if one of use had to carry him to class."
"Like you could even lift him," Her blonde friend teased, the blue of his eyes twinkling with mischief.
Misaki scowled, "Of course I can lift him—he barely weighs anything despite eating so much. That's totally unfair, by the way."
"What is?"
"The fact that Tama-chan can eat so much and not gain any weight!" She said, before sighing and looking off to the side, "I wish I had his metabolism."
Her Mary-Jane's tapped against the sidewalk, the sound oddly soothing. Although Misaki hated waking up early (well, she loathed getting out of her bed in general), she loved the early mornings. It was quiet, the world around her silent as life drearily passed by. Everybody was always lost in their own world during this time. She liked it better this way.
Mirio hummed from beside her, catching her attention, and she almost laughed when she saw the look of concentration on his face. Brows furrowed, lower lip pouting out, nose scrunched, the only time Misaki ever saw him this focused was when he used his quirk and when they were taking a test.
"I never realized it before, Misa," She raised her brow, "But Tama-chan does it a lot…maybe we should bring snacks for him in case he gets hungry during class?"
Dear Lord, she sighed, running a hand down her face, "I guess we should."
The things I'm going to do for you guys…just promise me you'll help me, too? Okay?
I didn't realize it had been forever since I updated! I apologize for that-time literally just slips by. I'm disappointed with this chapter, ngl.
