For a few seconds after she opened her eyes, she forgot the events of the yesterday. For a few precious seconds she indulged in Jay's smell in their bed, for a few second, she didn't cry. But then the reality of the situation came crashing through and those seconds seemed like an eternity ago. However, she didn't want to simply wallow in the situation, she knew poor Jay was feeling worse than she was and she was determined to be there for him. She had updated Voight of Jay's situation and he told her to take as much time as they needed. She was sure him and the team would be by to see him today. Will had checked in on her too.
She showered, had breakfast, and headed to the hospital. Jay was being discharged today and she still needed to tell him about them before he realized he doesn't live at his old apartment anymore.
She found him awake and sitting in the bed just looking at the wall.
"Good morning."
"Hi."
He turned to look at her and she could see the bruises in his face had turned purple he barely had any part of his face that wasn't covered. "Did you have a good night?"
"Yeah whatever meds they gave me knocked me out until this morning."
"Good." She hated having to walk on eggshells with him. "Did you have breakfast?"
"Well, the nurse me something that didn't even taste like food but luckily Kev and Ruz were here and brought me good coffee and some decent food."
She could see now the discarded coffee cup in the trash. "Nothing like a good cup of coffee to get the day going."
"Voight was in here too."
"What did he say?"
"Just to take my time and he's sure I'll be back on my feet and back to my old self soon. It was good seeing them, made me feel comfortable. They told me about Antonio and about Al."
"I am sorry you are having to hear all this bad news together. When Al died it was a difficult time for everyone in intelligence. Voight took it the hardest, but everyone rallied together to find those responsible and I think that helped with the grief."
"Kev told me that. He also told me Kim adopted a little girl."
"Makayla. She's a sweetheart. You and she are great friends."
"Really? didn't picture me as a kid person."
He said it jokingly but it was a hard stab at her heart. She remembered when they had found out she was pregnant and how happy Jay was. "Well, you are. You take her to the park and to the zoo. Everyone in the team helps Kim with babysitting so we've all become her aunts and uncles."
"Makes sense." There was a somewhat awkward pause. "Do you know where my phone is and my wallet? I asked the nurse and she said it all my personal items and they would have been released to my NOK so I figured Will or you might have it. I don't know if I have you as my NOK but I figured if since we are partners and if we are good partners maybe."
"You are the best partner." He was the best partner in the world, and she was grateful Voight hadn't separated them when they got together. "I do have all your personal belongings, but I want to tell you a few more things before I give them back to you. "
"Sure shoot."
She had been dreading the conversation and rehearsing how to tell him. I mean how do you tell your husband he's married to you while he believes he's in love with someone else? She had asked their team and Will not to say anything, she needed to tell him herself. "Jay we have been partners for 6 years and while working together we became friends and then we became more."
"Were we involved romantically?" Jay was very surprised. Right now, the only woman in his life was Erin he didn't understand how he would have gotten involved with Hailey Upton.
She swallowed hard at seeing the utter shock in his face. "Like I said we got close as partners, you were always there for me on the hard cases, and I was there for you too. It kind of became our thing to meet after a hard case drink a little and talk. Then I was sent to New York for a temporary assignment and we both realized we wanted more. So, when I came back, we finally took that step and told each other how we felt." She paused, wanting to give him time to take it all in. "Do you want me to keep going?"
"Yes. I need to know."
"Well, we were together for a year and then you asked me to marry you."
"Are you saying we are engaged?"
"No. we are married. We got married 5 months ago."
Jay didn't believe what he was hearing. He was married? Married to Hailey Upton? Or was she Hailey Halstead now? So many things he couldn't process. This wouldn't be a lie would it? I mean she has no reason to lie. "I am sorry, but this is difficult to process."
"I know I understand. I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I can't even imagine what it must feel like to have 6 years of your life just vanish and then having to find out about so many changes in your life all at once. Its frightening to me so I am sure you must be terrified."
"Yeah, no kidding."
"Jay I am here for you and you can ask me anything you want. I don't want you to get overwhelmed, but I needed to tell you about us before I give you your things."
He saw her pull a bag under her jacket and she handed it to him. He started taking items out of the bag and understood why she told him they were married. There was a wallet, it looked pretty used but I wasn't the wallet he remembered having. There were some keys, a phone, and a wedding band. It was then he looked at Hailey's hands and saw a matching ring on her finger. She saw him looking and put her hand in her pocket. He then looked at the phone, it was bigger than the one he remembered having and seemed to have less buttons.
"You just touch the screen and put your thumb and it will start. I don't know how much battery it'll have I left the bag in the car last night and didn't even think to charge it."
He was surprised when she took his finger and placed it on the phone, but it didn't feel weird. As soon as his finger touched the screen a picture of the two of them came up. They were laughing and he was hugging her. She seemed to know what he was thinking.
"If I remember correctly, we were having a team pizza night and were taking some pictures afterwards."
"They look happy." He knows its him in that picture, but he still sees it as someone else.
"We were."
He imagines this must be difficult for her too. "Listen I am sorry I don't remember you and me being an us but. Erin!"
Hailey turns towards the door to see Erin Lindsay standing there.
