Chapter came out late than I wanted it to. Off from school break now, and considering it's the end of April and near the end of the school year, you know what that means! Exams!
...yay.
In all seriousness though, weekly updates are definitely going to be the norm. But please know I'm prioritising my studies before anything else. Just know I'm happy with both my studies and my writing!
Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Ch3: A Date Across the Earth
After what happened half a year ago, seeing Kaiju in the wild wasn't as rare as it had been before.
The mass awakening that had caused panic and fear, had spurred back life into some of nature's most terrifying but majestic creatures to have ever roamed the earth. Seventeen and counting. That was the most recent recording of the number of Titan's founded and identified to be alive- either within a deep sleep or not. Most of them had awoken from their slumber and almost instantly started to reform the earth of its natural habitats and environment- their innate radiation and (surprising) care for the environment restoring the earth they called home. Just by setting up their own territory, these gigantic creatures replenish the life of the world.
And of course, as the King, Godzilla would keep them all in check, making sure the balance of life on earth was maintained. There was the squid-like Titan known as Scylla who he often saw near the continent of Antarctica. There, the fast melting ice had seem to come to a standstill, no longer in the threat of completely being destroyed- and no longer risked the lives of the innocent wildlife that lived there. There was also the mammoth-like Titan known as Behemoth, who the King would often see near the quiet rainforests of the Amazon. Where the tusked Titan had wandered, the greenery, once terraformed and close to losing its natural environment, had been replenished full of life and started to restore and grow vastly around the Amazon. And, there was also the pterosaur-like Titan that acquainted itself to a volcano north of Fiji...
Godzilla didn't like visiting there often.
In any case, when Titans were seen out in the wild, it would usually be when they were restoring the planet to its previous greatness- the greatness they had lived with millions of years ago. And the King wasn't one to miss out on this too. From when the mighty Alpha had swam through the pacific ocean, he had left behind newly restored reefs and gave back life to many marine life that suffered in the polluted waters. Strangely enough, though it was in his best interest to stay elusive and undetected, Godzilla was the one Titan that humanity had seen the most frequently out of all of the Titans- much to his dismay. It couldn't be helped when almost everyday he would have to go out into the world to make sure no other Titan dared to cause any problems or threatened the natural order. This was also coupled with the fact that the King had gone out of his way- on more than a few occasions- to protect many of the human cities from newly awakened Titans that had come to either make their homes where the cities stood, or outright destroy them. There was one Kaiju, in particular, that would frequently come to destroy densely populated area's of humanity out of his own cruel accord. In doing so, challenging Godzilla and his authority, and causing his patience to run thin and his rage to grow stronger after every quick victory against this opponent. The King remembered him from the Olden Days. A reptilian-like Kaiju, much like him, standing upright. Instead of a maw, his mouth was a sharp beak filled with serrated teeth, and where his claws would be, a long, curved hook would accompany the rest of his arm. He was a vicious and sadistic Kaiju, and his hatred for humanity (something unfortunately shared with other Titans) made him a threat, in the King's eyes, but one he could easily deal with.
He supposed this guardianship of humanity and his rather adamant nature in recent times had given rise to the humans appreciating him more than fearing him- although this guardianship wasn't out of his own sentimental attachment to them. Often- a little bit too often- many people on cruise ships or tour boats would have their face quickly filled with surprise as the familiar coal-black of his dorsal plates would surface out of the water for all to witness. It was a sighting akin to that of being able to witness a whale out in the wild with how frequent it had been, and how the people on the boats were so intrigued with it.
Somehow, after reappearing just six months ago, a sighting with the King of the Monsters was turned into somewhat of a tourist attraction.
To put it simply, to see Titans going around and doing their own business in the modern age wasn't unheard of, nor didn't remark any confusion or uncertainty. However, this had slightly changed for a moment. As within the day, onlookers would look on bewildered whenever they would see the King making his daily rounds across the earth- accompanied by a moth-like Titan, with massive wings that sparkled a deep blue, resting comfortable on his back as they traveled together across the ocean.
Like they had done millions of years ago, The King and the Goddess had promptly left the island with the beautiful waterfall and flourishing greenery to spend the day travelling around the earth with each other. It had been so long since they were able to find a moments of peace to be able to do such a thing, and Mothra had worried they would cause unnecessary trouble exposing themselves so fully to the world. However, Godzilla assured her that they'd been fine and that he would have had to go around the world checking on the others anyway.
"Do you not want to fly around rather than laying on my back?" Godzilla had questioned, looking up towards her when they had left the island. Of course, he wasn't opposed to it- he found it rather comforting for her to be so close to him. But he didn't want to sacrifice her own enjoyment for the sake of himself. "I thought you couldn't wait to start flying. And I know I'm not the most comfortable thing to be laying down on."
In response, Mothra simply laid her head sideways atop his, smiling peacefully as her crystal blue eyes stared at the flowing waves that parted around them as he swam forward, feeling her draped wings skim across the surface of the water. "It is better this way, is it not?" Mothra questioned as she gently stoked the back of the king, getting an audible purr from him in response, "Whenever we were given the chance to travel together, I would always accompany you like this. I have many a chance to use my wings, why waste this opportunity?"
After that, there was no more doubt about it as they continued forward on their path. It was an enthralling experience for Mothra to see how much the world had changed since the last time she had a proper look at the earth. Given what had happened in her last life- even from the moment she hatched out of her egg- the new world didn't give her the best of first impressions. But, having the serenity of the water and presence of her King really made the journey worthwhile as she gazed longingly at the islands they'd pass, and see the beauty they had to offer.
They had actually come quite close to an island inhabited by the Japanese populous- but luckily wasn't too populated to warrant a massive, country-level panic. To what was to be expected, Mothra had started to become anxious of what the humans might do about them getting so close, but Godzilla assured her they wouldn't stay long and that he wouldn't even make landfall. Of course, monitoring them intently, Monarch issued an evacuation warning. Not because of Godzilla (maybe partly so, actually), but they feared a Kaiju attack was immanent and that the King had come so close as to prepare to meet the Titan that would attack (he had done so in the past, after all). Soon, the humans that were on the beach of the island fled inwards to the main city. But their fears were misplaced, as Godzilla came close to the beach but stayed within the water.
It was like any other beach, really. Warm sand surrounding the island, and gentle clashing of water as it met with the sand. And dark-green grass that led further away. What really set it apart were beautiful, pink trees decorating the beach, ones where cherries had seemingly just bloomed into season adding more to their beautiful aesthetic. Mothra was confused at first, until Godzilla had gestured to her to make landfall on the beach. She looked back at him, not wanting to intrude on the lives of the humans for the sake of herself. However, both could sense the many eyes that were watching them, and how the loud noises they could hear from panicked citizens had died down to a standstill the moment they showed that not a threat was eminent. They could tell the humans were intrigued.
The King has simply wanted to visit, for her.
After some persuasion from Godzilla, Mothra finally allowed herself a very, very small smidge of selfishness as she gracefully flapped her wings and left Godzilla's head. She then landed onto the beach, carefully making sure her slender limbs didn't sink too deep into the sand, and moved close to a nearby tree- noticing how some were nearly as tall as she was- inspecting it to the point where she noted every detail about the pink tree, careful not to accidentally harm it in anyway. For a moment their was complete silence, from both the Titans and the humans. But soon, the silence was filled with a loud and enthusiastic squeak, then an ecstatic shrill that was heard by the remaining humans on the island. Looking back, Mothra could see Godzilla giving a small smile, signalling to her that she should continue inspecting these cherry-blossomed trees, much to her delight. After a while, Monarch issued an O.K. for the residents of the island stop the evacuation, but remain in the main parts of the city, although stressing to the public to make sure they weren't anywhere near the beach. But it couldn't be helped, out of sheer curiosity, to get closer and witness the Titan joyfully play around the sakura trees. Strangely enough, with her exited movements and the way she would often squeak and rub her fur against the trees, it was comparable to that of an exited puppy playing with a new toy.
Well, as comparable as a Kaiju can be to a puppy.
After a few moments, Mothra turned back around to thank Godzilla for taking her here, only to find he had disappeared entirely from where he was resting within the water, watching her contently. Soon, the worry and confusion overtook her, as she quickly left the sakura trees and spread her majestic wings to fly into the sky and try and find out where he had gone to. Luckily, she barely had to travel very far, as when she followed the beach and had started to circle around the island, she saw the back of his massive form and was ready to thoroughly question him on why he had left her without saying anything first. But, when he had turned around to meet her face, she was met with a peculiar site. There, standing up fully, the water coming just above his ankles, the King of the Monsters clasped firmly between his jaw, an alluring, uprooted sakura tree- making sure barely any of its beautiful, pink leaves would leave its branches so soon.
That was now three strange, out of character things in only one day the mighty King had managed to do: Firstly was glowing pink, second was his willingness to allow another Titan to ride on his back, and now third was that he was essentially offering flowers to another.
Godzilla gave Mothra a guilty but excited look as he tilted his head slightly to the side and rested his eyes- a way of telling her a mixture of 'sorry' and 'surprise!' Taken aback at first, Mothra glowed as pink as the tree itself and calmed her heightened worry of his abrupt disappearance, relieved he hadn't done anything too rash. Then, she turned her attention to the gift he was offering her, coming close to his face and inspecting the delicate tree. The longer she kept her eyes on it- sometimes extending her forelimbs to touch and caress the branches- the more she could tell how eager the King was to be given a response simply by the way he was breathing, noting how his steady breathe slightly blew away pink petals from the tree. Then, she gave a squeak of delighted gratitude as her pink flourished into a joyous blue, clasping the tree and the sides of Godzilla's head firmly between her frontal limbs.
The King gave a soft rumble in response. He could tell she liked it.
After their little stop, they continued their way across the ocean once again, with the King giving a sort of 'tour' to the Goddess, so to speak, as Mothra held the sakura tree securely against the back of the king. He had a lot he wanted to tell her in the long years they spent separated, and showing how much the world had really changed was one of the things he was excited to tell her about. Occasionally, when passing lands that were uninhabited by any humans, they would come across their fellow Titans doing whatever. Once the King was seen by them, all would promptly bow respectfully, making sure they showed to their King that they weren't causing any trouble. And when this would happen, Godzilla would always take this time to bring his subjects attention to Mothra, keen to show off her return to them, whether they knew of her rebirth or not. Of course, being her polite, usual self, Mothra would bow back to the other Titans and greet them kindly. Being the King's significant other half, not only was she well known amongst the other Titans, but well respected by them… most of them, at least. But, noticing the sun's decline and realising there wasn't much time left in the day, within the vast ocean, Mothra had told Godzilla she wanted to use the remaining time they had left to really stretch out and use her wings. Naturally, the King obliged and welcomed her request, slowing down his speed in the ocean, wanting to still continue forward.
Standing atop his back, setting her gift gently aside and extending her great wings, Mothra took to the air. And what an amazing feeling it was to be back high in the sky. To feel the wind beneath her wings, and to taste the air as she quickly glided across the heavens was what she had dearly missed. And what made this even better was the fact that she could now fly for the sake of enjoying it for herself and have fun. No urgency filled the flap of her wings, nor did she take off for the sake of engaging in a battle. More than she hoped, these would be the factors that would be needed for her to take flight. But now, in this time of rare peace, she was free to soar through the air without a care in the world. Godzilla, who had been watching from the start, sighed a heavy breathe and was happy she was enjoying herself so much, Although, after a few minutes, the King noticed how her movements became quicker and more coordinated, and how she would quickly change directions by spinning through the air. Then, his eyes widened in surprise as she realised what he had started to do.
She was dancing.
Each twist, turn, spin- even down to every beat of her wings- had perfectly conveyed her personality: quick, composed, gentle, powerful… beautiful. No other Kaiju would ever dream of presenting themselves in such a way, but Mothra wasn't like most others. She had pride in illustrating her peaceful and loving character to the world. She didn't care how out-of-place this looked for massive creature, a monster some had called her, this was. She was given a rare opportunity to re-acquaint herself with something she loved to do, and being one who lived everyday to the fullest, she wasn't going to waste it. Giving a loud shrill jubilantly, the Goddess wheeled through the air and skimmed across the surface of the ocean, relishing in her amazing dance.
She continued until the sun had finished setting.
In present time, the King and the Goddess rested in the cave they had made their home, after returning to their island. They had already returned to their usual resting positions; Godzilla laying on his underside keeping Mothra's small form close to his side as he wrapped and surrounded his tail around her. Only a couple hours ago did the sun completely disappear, allowing the darkness and serenity of the night to take over. Within the calmness of it all, Godzilla was now gently grooming the fur of the tired-out moth with his tongue as Mothra purred thankfully and cheerfully, resting her head atop her claws and closing her eyes. Beside them, laid Godzilla's gift to her, its pink colour still visible within the cave thanks to the strong luminosity of blue from the two Titans. They enjoyed the calm silence, they'd realised a while back that each other's company was enough for them. There, for a while, they basked in each others warmth until Godzilla finished his grooming of her.
"Did you enjoy yourself?" the King whispered, keeping his head close to her body.
Mothra opened her eyes and perked up her head from the ground, looking back at the King's face. "Yes, it was quite refreshing," Mothra replied lovingly, looking upwards to face his eyes. "Most especially because I could spend the day with you."
Nodding slowly at her, the King laid his head down onto the cave floor so it was against her soft head. Smiling and giving an audible squeak of satisfaction, Mothra pressed her head further into the side of his, allowing Godzilla's strong arms to gently wrap around her small body, keeping her close to him.
"Just like the Olden Days." Godzilla said as he caressed the side of her fur-covered body.
"Just like the Olden Days." Mothra replied, chuckling as she nodded her head, nuzzling against his snout.
Once again, silence filled the air as the two rested against each other. And the silence would have continued, had Mothra not remembered that she wanted to do one more demonstration for the King before he slept. On the verge of closing his eyes, Godzilla suddenly perked his head up the moment he started to hear a familiar tune being hummed and shrilled, resonating within the cave. Turning towards Mothra, Godzilla fixated his gaze upon her, seeing how she moved to sit upright and lean her back against the side of the his body, returning her stare at the ocean's tranquility. Taking in a deep breathe, Mothra started to sing a soft and slow melody that echoed across the island. It was a song she would have often sang to her King whenever he was agitated or angry- his rage being a detriment to the world, and himself. But finding herself in such a peaceful situation with him, the Goddess couldn't help but sing her heart away as she naturally started to sway from side to side. The song wasn't anything like the normal sounds the other Titan's would make. Even to human ears, there was a distinct and calm melody within Mothra's peaceful song. Sombre yet uplifting; quiet yet emotional, music filled the heart of the King as he continued to stare at her until he found himself sleeping, the song still playing within his dreams.
There she stood within the room, lights flashing around her within the darkness, subtle beeps of technology being the only noise to accompany her in the night. Staring intently at the screen, Dr Ilene Chen watched Godzilla's dormant form and Mothra's song upon a screen within Monarch's headquarters. Her eye's studied the two Titans, trying desperately to piece together the mystery her mind was forming in her head.
"But why now?" The mythologist whispered, squinting her eyes further the more she thought about the King of the Monsters and the Goddess.
"Why what?" a young voice from behind her said, startling her and causing her to finally break away from the screen and look behind her.
Standing behind a control panel within the room, a young girl- around the age of twelve- smiled back, giving a look of remorse for scaring her before walking closer to the doctor, curious about what she was thinking about.
"Oh, Madison!" Ilene said quickly, relieved to see a familiar face, "What are you doing here this late at night? Does your father know you're here?"
The young girl sheepishly turned away at the mention of her dad, smiling guiltily and putting her hands inside the pockets of her jacket.
"Well…" she began, unable to look the adult in the eye, "My dad doesn't actually know I'm here. But, after hearing what had happened today, I just had to sneak off to here to know more about it. After all, I'm a future Monarch scientist, ya know?"
"Yes, don't worry, I know." Ilene chuckled kindly. Despite what had happened to the young girls mother- and her family as a whole- she was glad Madison remained enthusiastic and cheerful not just within Monarch, but in her regular life as well.
"You do know what happened, right?" Madison questioned, expecting Ilene to have said more, "Surely you saw it on the news."
"Yes, I know what happened with Godzilla and Mothra," the doctor quickly replied, "In fact, I was part of the group monitoring them for the day."
"So you've seen it all go down?!" Madison enthusiastically said, unable to keep herself from rambling much longer, "It's amazing right? Who would have thought that Mothra not only laid and egg, but one that would hatch so quickly? And I've heard that the Mothra that hatched last night could be the same Mothra as before- memories and all! Also, when Godzilla traveled around with Mothra and ended up at an island near Japan and offered Mothra, something that was basically a gift to her…"
As she continued to talk about what she heard or saw on T.V., Ilene returned to watching the screen, the anxiousness in her stomach not going away even with the light-heartedness in the room. She had to find out why Mothra was reborn so soon- and the sooner, the better.
"...so, as weird as this sounds, they basically went on a date, right?" Madison finished, looking back to Ilene to await her response. But all she got was silence, and a feeling of uneasiness.
"Dr Chen?" Madison called, hoping she hadn't bored the doctor to the point where she was ignoring her.
"Hm?" Ilene said absent-mindedly, but soon realised her rudeness and turned back to meet the girl, "Oh, sorry Madison. I just had to think for a little bit. I've been doing so for a couple of hours now."
Seeing the seriousness in her face, Madison slowly walked so that she was beside her, and watched the two Titans on the screen with her. "What are you thinking about?" Madison whispered, the silence becoming unnerving to her.
"I think…" Ilene paused and stopped herself. It would be unwise to tell the girl the full truth. She didn't want to worry her, especially after all she's been through. Then, making up her mind, she spoke, the calm seriousness slightly scaring the girl.
"I think I need to speak with my sister."
Question: If Godzilla and Mothra lived amongst humans, where do you think they would take each other out on dates?
I reckon Mothra would take Godzilla to Starbucks
And Godzilla would take Mothra to Krispy Kreme (or Dunkin Donuts, depending where you're from)
(Also, apparently sakura trees can grow up to 40 ft or 12 m tall!)
