Chapter 3
Sweat dripped down Bella's forehead causing her eyes to sting badly. It was a nice distraction from the incessant itching of her nose under the corse fabric mask though, having an itch you can't scratch may well be worse than all her past broken bones combined Bella thought to herself.
Even in summer Washington was not that hot and the taxi windows were all open. Yet, Bella found the environment stifling. Years of living in the pacific north west had thickened Bella's blood. Florida was going to be much worse. Needing a distraction from the itch, Bella was happy to hear her phone chirp.
JACOB: Bells I really don't think you should be doing this.
Bella sighed, this wasn't the type of distraction she needed right now.
BELLA: I have to, you KNOW I have to. Everything will be fine.
JACOB: I should at least be there with you.
BELLA: Don't be stupid. Leah is going to pop any day now.
JACOB: Who thought letting me become a father was a good idea?
BELLA: um... I think maybe the rez school you went to was lacking in their biology lessons there
JACOB: ha! You be safe Bella keep your Damon mask on and text me when you land.
BELLA: Will do!
Bella put the phone down and closed her eyes. They wouldn't be at the airport for at least another 30-minutes. Bella knew Jake was right in a way. Boarding a tin can in the middle of a deadly pandemic wasn't the smartest of ideas. But when Bella got word of Renee's accident she didn't think twice. Charlie never let her visit him once after quarantine started and once he fell ill it was impossible to get the hospital to let her in. Bella never got to say goodbye. It seemed to be a running theme of her life. All the people she loved left her without so much as a fair well. The Cullens popped into her mind instantly as Bella shook her head violently to try to get them out. They were gone. She had accepted that years ago. All she had left now was Jacob and his pack and her mother- for now.
By all accounts and purposes Renae should of been the one to die of Covid. A die hard anti-masker, she was convinced the virus wasn't actually real. That is until she got word of Charlie passing from it. After that, Renae was a changed woman and did her best to protect herself for Bella's sake. Unfortunately a mask was not good protection for a motorcycle crash. Bella was in no position to blame her mother though. After all Bella spent years as an adrenaline junkie all for the purpose of trying to conjure up images of Edward again. She would still be doing it to be honest if it has not stopped working and triggered her to try drugs as a new method. Bella only tried drugs once as once was enough to send her to the hospital fighting for her life yet again.
They called it a suicide attempt. It wasn't. Even though Bella didn't want to live without Edward she also didn't want to die. Dying when the person you love and hope to be with again is immortal seemed a pointless endeavour.
That was the Bella of years ago though. Today's Bella finally has her shit together. Meaning, that today's Bella has finally figured out how to put one foot in front of the other and shield herself from any more pain. The key was robot mode as Bella liked to call it. Robot mode was incredibly useful. It kept annoying unwanted suitors away and it allowed her to do her job better as it kept emotions out of it. Bella's one life goal now was simply to do some good for others since she knew any hope of happiness for herself was destroyed the day Edward discarded. Now she wanted for just try and help discarded children as best she could. But, like herself, not all of her cases were fixable. Robot mode let Bella cope with that.
Charlie's death nearly destroyed her self-imposed robot shield though. Not being able to say goodbye was almost too much to cope with. And, when Bella got the call that her mother had been in an accident and was in critical condition she didn't think twice about booking the next flight out. If her mother was going to leave her too now then Bella was going to at least get some closure first. Her robot mode depended upon it.
When the taxi pulled up to the airport Bella was only half surprised to see that it was busy. In fact, it seemed even busier than normal, most likely because all smaller airports had closed, a decision that really didn't make much sense if you asked Bella. At least everyone appeared to be wearing masks and keeping a good distance apart from each other.
Things remained fairly Covid secure all throughout the security check in and boarding process. Bells easily found her b seat on row 16 and buckled herself in, hoping no one would come to sit in seat A and that she would be able to move over to the window after take off.
There was no such luck though as the plane kept getting fuller and fuller. With limited flights running it seemed the ones that were would be jammed packed. Bella heard the grumpy old woman before she saw her.
"I'm exempt. Look at my badge people I have a medical exemption so just get out of my way," the angry woman shouted. Somehow Bella just knew instantly that this woman would be her seat mate and that it was going to be a long 4 hour flight.
And oh boy was Bella right.
