Chapter 3: Plans and executions
Beacon Academy was... certainly not how Briar imagined. She dreamed of becoming a Huntress and attending Beacon ever since she was a child. Her teachers at her old school expected nothing less from her. Things, of course, didn't go her way. The first instance of this was when Summer said she didn't want to be a Huntress, the second was when she dissappeared. So when she saw her sister on the airship headed towards Beacon, she was quite surprised. Before her brain could even register it, she was trapping Summer in a hug. Briar was so glad that her sister was okay and she had so many questions. But Summer was... well... Summer. She acted like nothing happened, then she started talking about fighting criminals and Uncle Whitley drugging her. It was all too much. Briar felt like her brain shut down for a minute.
"So... You're telling me that Uncle Whitley drugged you?" Briar had to say it out loud to be able to comprehend what Summer told her. "Don't you think this is a little too far fetched?" she asked after a brief pause. She was half expecting Summer to start laughing and tell her it's a joke, but she didn't.
"I can't stay here." Summer stated. "You have to help me escape." Briar's face fell as she stared into her sister's silver eyes. You can't be serious. You can't do this to me. She wanted to say, but no words left her mouth.
"Well, if it isn't Summer Schnee." said the familiar voice of her cousin.
"Hi Lia!" Briar tried to not sound as lost as she felt. Summer was preparing to run away, but Briar managed to catch her.
"Lia... What a joy..." Summer mumbled with as much unenthusiam in her voice as humanly possible.
"I wasn't expecting to see you here. I would've gotten you a gift."
"No thanks. You being here is enough of a gift. " Summer looked like she was in physical pain just by being around Lia. Briar decided to step in before their the situation could escalte any futher. Summer and Lia's arguing... wasn't very pretty.
"So what are you doing here, Lia?" she asked. Lia gave her one uninterested answer, while Summer tried to get out of her hold, which she managed when the ship landed. Lia immediately used her semblance to dissappeare, leaving Briar alone. Well not really, her friends were still there. Somewhere.
The last night really shattered Briar's dreams about her time at Beacon. Summer was planning to escape, Lia was apathetic to everything around her and one of her classmates thought she was a slut.
No stop. Briar took a deep breath and left the shower. After brushing her teeth, she moved on to getting dressed. She decided to wear a strapless dress with a pink top and a black skirt pluss her usual stockings and cape. She was about to go to the cafeteria, suddenly she bumped into Lia.
"Briar!" she exclaimed happily, which wasn't really usual for her. "I was looking for you?"
"Really?" Briar couldn't help but ask, deciding to leave the 'I found it hard to believe' part out. Snark wasn't really her thing.
"I know we don't always get along... " Lia trailed of. By 'not always' She probably meant nearly never. Their relationship wasn't much better than the one between Summer and Lia, the only difference was that Briar tried not to antagonize Lia and be nice. (With limited success.) "But as your cousin and someone in dire need." She paused for a second, visibly in pain because of what she was about to say. "You've gotta help me get out here."
"What?" Briar really didn't know how she could help with anything.
"You're a fighting prodigy and always had amazing grades. Maybe you could get your mom to talk to my moms. Convince them to take me away from this place."
"Well thing is..." Briar was scratchingq the back of her neck awkwardly. " My mom is on a mission right now. I can't really contact her. But I'll see what I can do. " she added. As rude as it sounded, Lia leaving was most likely going be a relief for everyone. Lia sighed, then disappeared, without another word. Briar was eating her breakfast when Summer slamed her tray to the table.
"Why didn't you wake me up?"
"Sorry." Briar mumbled. "You looked like you had a rough night."
"Thanks I guess... " her sister mumbled then started eating in a way, that wasn't really usual for her and would most likely make their mother roll in her grave.
"Looks like you have a good appetite." Briar commented. She didn't mean it as an insult, but Summer seemed to take it as such.
"Yeah, well when you leave on the street you don't always get to have breakfast. " Briar's eyes widened.
"You were starving?"
"Of course not! I just... didn't always got to eat... Just leave it!" the candycane-haired girl mumbled. Briar somehow felt like she was slapped on the face. She should've helped her mom trying to find Summer. What did she do instead? Lived her life like nothing happened, while her sister was starving on the street.
"Summer, if I..."
"I said LEAVE IT." Briar was taken aback. Summer was always grumpy and rarely kind, but not openly angry. She didn't know what to say. They ate in silence. Summer quickly finished and was about to leave when someone called her name.
"Summer!" It was a boy, around their age with brown hair and eyes. He was wearing khaki pants and jacket with a white shirt.
"I swear to fu..." Summer growled, but when she turned around and saw the boy, her anger seemingly disappeared. "Goosie."
"My name is Matt." said the boy in protest.
"Who is he?" Briar chimed in.
"Matthias Goose. Call me Matt."
"My name is Briar Rose. I'm Summer sister." Briar introduced herslef and they shook hands.
"What are you doing here?" he turned back to Summer.
"I was kidnapped by my uncle." the other girl replied in a casual tone. Matt let out an awkward laughter, not really knowing how to react. Briar didn't blame him.
"So... How do you know each other?" she asked.
"I was staying with Goosie and his mother before I was abducted." Summer explained. "By the way, have you managed to contact your mother? I tried calling her, but it didn't work.
"No. I'm writing her letters." he answered. "Why?"
"I wanted to ask her to get me out of here, but it looks like I'll have to go through the forest. "
"What?" Briar and Matt asked, equally confused.
"Through the forest. We're going to be thrown into the Emerald Forest. The security around the forest must be less , so I might be able to get out."
"So... You're really leaving... " Briar muttered. Sure, she knew what Summer was planning, but this just felt like twisting the knife.
"I'll be gone by afternoon." Before the smaller girl could say anything an announcment was made through the intercom system.
"All first year students report to Beacon cliff for initiation."
"Better get our weapon." Briar mumbled.
"Today, you'll be asigned teammates. The first person you make eyecontact with, will be your partner for the next four years. After you partnered up, make your way to the northern end of the forest. You'll find an abandoned temple containing several relics. Each pair must chose one and return to the top of the cliff. You'll be monitored and graded, but the teachers won't intervene. " Headmistress Goodwitch explained. Briar was pretty low on spirits before, but being launched into the air brought her a bit of excitment. She used her glyphs to landing and started running. Maybe if she found Summer, she could talk to her, convince her to stay. Suddenly, she heard something. Somekind of commotion. She quickly made her way towards the noise.
"Summer?" she asked, when she arrived. But it wasn't Summer. It was guy from last night, fighting a bunch of beowolves. For a moment was tempted to leave, but when the guy heard her and turned around, he left his back open and a beowolf was about get him. So Briar took a deep breath, unfolded her weapon into bow-mode and shoot the grimm.
"I didn't need your help." the guy said.
"Yeah, that's why you left that opening for the beowolf." Briar countered and ran to him, turning her weapon into an axe for close combat.
Lia felt letargic. She tried everything to convince her moms not to send her to Beacon, but nothing worked and, sadly, she wasn't an adult, so her parents had the right to send her to this prison camp. But that was just the tip of the iceberg. When her cousins showed up she instantly lost the little hope she had, that her years spent in Beacon will be at least painless. Briar was bearable, even if she was incapable of ever shutting up, but Summer was a huge bitch, who would no doubt make her life here miserable. Well... even more miserable.
Her disnterest didn't leave her even when they were, literally, thrown into the forest. Lia used her semblance to jump futher, but landed after a couple of jumps. She didn't want to use up all of her aura. She started running towards north, hoping to finish the task as quickly as she could.
Suddenly her four ears picked a noise. She looked down into a large pit, where she was met with a pair of silver eyes. Lia immediately turned away and used her semblance to up out of sight.
Hell no! There's no way in hell that she'll be the partner of Summer fuckin' Schnee. She hoped that her cousin would take the hint and move on. Unfortunately in trying to get away, Lia successfully jumped right in front of an ursai. It didn't really bother her. She grabbed her weapon and was about to shoot the grimm, when someone grabbed her arm and yanked her away.
"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" she shouted.
"Chill out. I..." Summer started, but Lia didn't intend to let her finish.
"I don't want to be your partner! Haven't I made it clear?!" Before she could've continued however, Summer yelled:
"Shut up! Just shut up for a second!" Lia didn't even know why she obeyed. Maybe it was anger in her voice or the fact that she haven't really heard Summer shouting before. "Okay. So you don't want to be here either?" Lia nodded. "I have a plan."
"I'm all ears." Lia muttered, smiling a bit at her own joke.
"All we have to do is pretend to be stupid." Summer whispered. Lia raised an eyebrow, not really understanding what she meant. "If they we look incompetent enough, then sooner or later they'll kick us out. So what do you say?" Lia let out a sigh then streched out her hand.
"I'm in." a moment after they shook hands, the ursai catched up to them. The two girls looked at each other, then Summer shouted:
"Oh no! An ursai!"
A/N: I hope you liked it.
Fun fact: Lia's semblance is called Disappear and she can disappear and appear in different places. It's basically teleporation.
