A/N: This was, by far, one of the hardest chapters I have ever written. I will warn all of you now, this chapter is a *tear jerker.* I have proofread the chapter at least 6 times, and each time I needed numerous amounts of tissues.
A little back story. Nana is my favorite character, to date, that I have written about. When I was in college, I volunteered at a nursing home and there were many "Nana's" there. They all had a different kind of spunk and no filter. I loved writing this one shot and although it is a beautiful story, it is meant to send out the meaning of Easter, and eventually come to an end.
Thank you all who left a review and thank you to those who helped me sort through making this a One Shot divided into chapters. You ladies on the Scandal Facebook page make it so much more inspiring to continue writing.
Enjoy this last chapter. Please, be forewarned, have some tissues nearby, unless you can take the sadness. Have a joyous Easter or whatever you celebrate with your family.
3 months later
Many magazines were following up on stories from the gala. They had pictures of Fitz and Liv together and it hadn't registered how popular Fitz was in the country. He had made millions in the real estate business and it was big news when he took over the nursing homes. Liv had no idea, but Nana did. Nana knew how special he was from the start. Fitz never broadcasted his millions or his fame. He was the most humble person Nana met.
Liv visited Nana frequently through her now three-month relationship with Fitz. They were taking it slow, and Liv was very comfortable and secure with Fitz. She enjoyed their time together, holding one another, feeling one another and kissing one another. She didn't know how much longer she could hold out, but with each passing day, she was falling deeper and deeper in love with him.
There were times when he was traveling, she missed him terribly. She couldn't sleep and she found herself calling him just to hear his soothing voice. So many nights, she fell asleep while Fitz was talking, but he never once took it as an insult. He loved hearing her fall asleep, he knew he was comforting her from afar.
On this day, a Friday, when Fitz usually flew back to DC, Olivia was visiting with Nana.
"Nana, are you really not going to talk to me? We've talked about this. It's going well. Fitz and I are happy, moving along."
"Livvie, I am not going to be here forever, what you are doing to Fitzgerald is wrong. That man loves you, and you love him, you know you love him, have you told him yet? Have you let yourself see the heavens?" Nana's hands were sternly on her hips, even as she sat in her wheelchair. She took one at Liv and she knew the answer.
"You have not told that boy you love him, you have not made love to him. He is going to walk away from you one day. You are going to turn around and he isn't going to be there, then what. I will tell you what, my door will be closed because I am not wiping your tears away. When did you meet, what day did you meet?" She cupped her ear and waited for an answer.
"Easter," Liv whispered.
"Louder, my hearing isn't well,"
"Nana, your hearing is just fine."
"WHAT DAY?"
"Easter and Easter brings new life. "
"That's right, but only for people who want it. Come on, help Nana into the bed." As Liv was pulling the light blanket up on Nana, Nana pulled Liv down by the neck. She looked commanding in her eyes. "Livvie, tell me you don't love him, and I will stop bothering you, tell me you don't want to make love to him and I will stop bothering you, and tell me you don't want a life with him and I will stop bothering you."
Liv broke from Nana's grip. She looked around her room. How it has changed in just three months' time. She had pictures of Liv and Fitz lining her walls and frames of them on her nightstand. Every time Liv visited her, she was talking so proudly about them. Nana brought them together and only wanted the best for her Livvie.
Livvie looked back down at Nana. She seemed a bit more tired than usual today. She was waiting for an answer. Liv's eyes filled up with tears. She placed her head on Nana's chest and she heard her heartbeat in her ear. "you have part of my heart beating with yours." She remembered Nana's words to her. Nana caressed her hair. "Livvie, why do you do this to yourself?"
"I do Nana, I do love him. I love him with all my heart. I miss him terribly when he's gone, and I wait for him each week. I watch for him, there are times I find it hard to breathe when he's not here. I want to make love to him, to belong to him and to share a life with him. Sometimes, it hurts so much thinking about it."
"Yes, my Livvie, yes, that is love. That is what you deserve." She took her chin and forced Liv's face to meet hers. "That's the new life waiting to come out in you. Go get your happiness." Even though she said she wouldn't Nana wiped away Liv's tears.
Fitz was standing outside the door the whole time. He heard the whole conversation, and he took a deep breath. If only Liv knew how his heartbeat for her. While he was away how he longed for her, how he missed her, how he needed her, and how he belonged to her. This was the weekend, he would do it, but he needed to talk to Nana.
He waited in the community room until he saw Liv leave. He walked into Nana's room. She was resting in her bed and when she saw him, she put her hand out and weakly said "Fitzgerald."
Fitz took her hand and sat on her bed. "Thank you, Fitzgerald, for staying by my Livvie's side. Please don't give up on her."
"Nana I wanted to ask you something." He pulled out a ring box. She looked at him and said, "Oh Fitzgerald, I am going to have to decline and say no, I am in no shape to get married to anyone."
Fitz put his head down in laughter and put the ring box away. "That's it Nana, I can never recover from being rejected from you. I am going to become a priest."
"Boy, take that box out and let me look at what you plan to put on my Livvie's finger. That stubborn fool better not ruin this."
"Oh Fitzgerald, this takes my breath away." Nana was holding a 1. 5 carat princess cut diamond ring. On either side of the initial diamond were seven small diamonds that made its way halfway around. Inside the band it read "Forever my Livvie". "MHM, my boy, this is perfect. Now tell me what you plan to do."
Fitz told her his plans for the entire weekend. They would return on Sunday, regardless of if she said yes or not. He still wasn't going to give up on her.
"After that weekend you just described to me if she says no, I will personally give her the Nana beatdown. Yes, you bring her right to me if she says no, how hard that girl will get it upside her head."
"Nana, I will see you on Sunday. If you need anything, ask for Quinn."
Nana gripped Fitz's hand. She pulled him down to her. "Thank you for bringing this old woman the happiness she's waited to see. This was my Easter wish. I love you Fitzgerald, like you were my own grandson."
Fitz smiled as he headed to get Liv and embark on the weekend he had planned.
Liv rested her head on his shoulder as the helicopter was taking them to the undisclosed place. Fitz hadn't said a word to her about where they were heading. He didn't even let her pack. He just showed up at the office and took her.
Abby and Huck knew all about it because they had no objection and Abby welcomed her departure from the office early even though they had three different parties scheduled for the next three months.
The helicopter landed on an amazing green lawn and Fitz escorted Liv down by the hand and into an enormous house. Once inside, it took her breath away. It smelled of wood and pine and just had a welcome home feel to it.
"Where are we Fitz, what is this place?"
Fitz took her hand. "Remember when I told you I had a place to settle down after all my homes are in order? Well, this is the place. This is Vermont. We are in the middle of nowhere. This is my house, well, I hope for it to be ours." He looked up. "There's rooms for lots of kids and a kitchen in case you ever want to make jam."
"Jam", she said laughing. "I don't know about jam." But her eyes caught his and she caressed his face. "Fitz, I love you. I love you so much. I can't take when you're away from me." Now the tears were streaming down, and she couldn't stop them. He pulled her close to his chest and she pulled him down for a kiss. It was a passionate kiss, their tongues touching in ways they never let themselves do before.
"Fitz, I am ready for you", her core aching, and her body screaming. "Fitz, I am so ready for you, please make love to me. Make love to me in this house. This place you want to be our home. Let's make it feel like home." They were both breathing heavy, and Liv took a breath and began to look around.
Liv looked all over, she looked at the kitchen and she looked up at the rooms, and then she looked back at Fitz with tears falling from her eyes, because he was on one knee. "Livvie, will you marry me? Will you be my forever?"
"Make sure you say yes ok?" "You are saying yes when he proposes" Nana knew this would happen months ago.
Liv put her hand over her mouth. She couldn't stop the tears from falling as her head was going up and down. She pulled her hand away and said "yes, Fitz, yes a thousand times yes."
He slipped the ring on her finger and he gripped his arms around her and lifted her with his face buried deep in her neck.
He carried her up to their soon to be bedroom. He took off her clothes piece by piece and with each exposure of her body, he kissed her with his warm lips. He kissed her stomach, her shoulders, and her breasts. When her underwear came off, he kissed her fold and he felt her weaken. He began tasting her for the first time, gently letting her down on the bed as he pulled her to the edge, his head between her legs.
He gently licked her clitoris and placed gentle kisses where his mouth had never been. His tongue found her entry and she pulled his hair and moaned his name. His eyes looked up to see what he was doing to her and her eyes were closed and her back began to arch. He stopped for just a moment to release his erection and continued. His tongue entered and exited, and Liv buckled on the bed, letting her body convulse.
It was an orgasm like no other and she was still breathing heavily as he came up for air and buried his lips on her. She could taste herself on his lips and it made her want him more. She held his head in place on her lips while massaging through his curls and his hand played with her nipples. She felt herself moan from deep in her throat.
His hand reached his erection and he poked at her entry. She let go of the kiss and held his head as he kissed her neck and guided himself into her. With one swift thrust he pushed deep into her body. Liv's eyes closed as she felt him deep inside her.
"When you make love to him, those stars will part, and you will see the heavens. There is no feeling in the world that can describe the feeling when you make love to your soul mate."
Those stars did part, and she saw the colors of the wind and the sky when the sun meets it at dusk. She saw comforting angels and heard calming music. He was fully in her now, she was feeling him inside her and she could do nothing but enjoy it. She couldn't moan, she couldn't scream, she could just see all the colors and feel all the comfort as a wave of weakness came over her and her body started to feel the pleasure flow and she met his thrusts, pushing with him.
Suddenly, like a tremendous wave of water from the ocean, they both came crashing down. The sensation hit them both, and they both hit their climax together. Liv kept her arms around his neck breathing deeply and unevenly, as he gently kissed her neck over and over.
They finally looked at each other. "I love you Fitz, more than you can ever imagine. Thank you for waiting for me."
"Livvie, I love you more, and I will forever love you. You are the love of my life. Thank you for choosing me, and I would wait forever for you."
He lay with his head on her breast as she massaged his curls. She chuckled a bit and said "Easter" and Fitz finished "it brings new life."
"Nana is never wrong" Liv said.
It was the moment Liv said yes to marry Fitz when Nana's heart suddenly stopped at the nursing home. The staff rushed to her side and was able to get it pumping again. She was very weak and had to be moved to the infirmary. They didn't think she would make it through the night.
While Fitz and Olivia were lying in bed, having made love for a third time, Liv was staring at the ring. "So, Nana knew all about this?"
"She did, she turned me down flat when I asked her, which is why you have the ring on now, I had to take the second-best lady in the world."
Liv chuckled and kissed him. "I love how you love her. She is my life Fitz. I know she says she won't be here forever, but I don't know what I would do without her."
Fitz's phone buzzed. It was Quinn and she knew he asked not to be disturbed unless an emergency arises. He jumped out of the bed and told Liv he had to take the call. Liv nodded her head, just staring at the ring and thanking Nana for bringing Fitz into her life. She couldn't wait to tell Nana she said yes. She wanted to see the smile it generated on her face.
Fitz stood in the doorway, with the most concerned face Liv had ever seen. She looked up and her smile turned to confusion. "What is it Fitz?"
He told her about Nana and how they had to get back right away. Liv's mind suddenly went blank, and her body went numb. She was having a hard time getting dressed and Fitz was trying desperately to calm her down.
They arrived in the infirmary. Huck was there with tear stains on his cheeks. Abby couldn't even look at Liv as she was holding Nana's hand. Quinn and Charlie were off to the side and had a few words with Fitz. "It isn't good. Her heart is very weak, old. She doesn't have much more time." Quinn told Fitz what the doctors told her, and Fitz walked over to Liv.
Liv was staring at Nana and holding Huck's hand. Huck brought Liv's hand to his face. "Liv, I am so sorry". He got up, placed a gentle kiss on Nana's cheek and whispered "I love you Nana" as he quietly left the room.
Abby came over to Liv's side and put her arm around her. "She opened her eyes once about an hour ago asking for you. She wanted to know if you said yes, but I didn't know what she was talking about."
Liv held up her hand for Abby to see the ring. Abby covered her mouth, and she started the ugly cry.
"I did say yes Abby, I did." Abby hugged her tight, sobbing, and that's when Liv started to sob also. Uncontrollable tears as she mouthed the word "Nana."
It was just Fitz and Liv left in the room with Nana after Abby gently kissed her and left. Liv sat on her bed and held Nana's hand. She had the oxygen tube in her nose and with Liv's touch, her eyes opened briefly. "Livvie, she whispered, "my Livvie." Her thumb felt around Liv's hand and rested on the ring. "You said yes. My Easter wish came true."
"Yes, Nana," Liv said between sobs. "I said yes. I told him I love him, and I said yes. I opened my heart to Fitz and I saw the heavens."
Fitz sat on the other side of the bed and Nana's eyes moved towards him. He held her hand and Liv saw him cry for the very first time. "Nana, thank you for bringing Livvie into my life", he said with a sob. He was having trouble getting his words out and Liv couldn't help him because her crying became heavier.
Liv reached over and their hands interlocked across Nana and rested on her stomach. They each held one of Nana's hands while they held their own.
"Fitzgerald," she whispered, "I told you when you met her, that was the day the Lord has made. Easter brings new life. It's time the two of you go and start that new life together. Nana loves you both and I'll be watching you from the heavens Livvie, you'll always see the heavens with your soul mate."
With that, Nana closed her eyes and lost her grip on both their hands as she took her last breath. Liv's head fell onto Nana's chest as she sobbed over again "Nana, Nana, I love you," longing to feel her caress her hair one more time.
Instead, she felt Fitz's hands on her shoulders. He picked Liv up in his arms and she buried her head deep in his neck as she cried for the loss of her Nana. He cradled her close as he took one last look at Nana and left the room.
He stayed with his Livvie all through the night and for the rest of the week. In the coming months they planned a very small, private wedding, and moved to Vermont.
Several years and three children later, they continued to reminisce about Nana. Every Easter they had all the same activities from the day they met. The activities were both at the Grant home and at a nursing home. The kids loved the egg hunt and the painting. Fitz and Liv told their children Easter was the day the Lord had made, and it brings new life. Each year they would plant a tree or new flowers to signify that new life.
One Easter their youngest, and only daughter, Annabelle had asked, "how do you know Easter brings new life?" Fitz and Olivia looked lovingly at each other. They told her, and her twin brothers about Nana, about how their little girl got her name, and how Nana brought mommy and daddy together. Liv caressed her daughter's hair, just like Nana always did to her. "We know Easter brings new life because you and your brothers are living proof that it does."
