Back at the hospital, Rachel had been told of her newfound disability last night, it was now Tuesday morning, she had cried herself to sleep and had shouted at Finn when he tried to kiss her to calm her down, she felt disgusting and helpless, something she had never felt in the entirety of her life. Her fathers were trying to act as normal as possible for her sake, but Rachel could see in their eyes they were struggling not to burst out crying as they watched Rachel struggle to move. She was still strapped into the body brace and nurses came in every hour, moving her legs for her or emptying her waste bag, checking her vitals etc. All in all, it was humiliating, Rachel Berry was an extremely stubborn and independent person so having everything done for her and not having any say or control over any of it made her feel small, she felt useless and quite honestly couldn't think of what life was going to be like outside of these four walls.
She knew that the glee club had been told as her fathers had informed her that she was going to have some visitors after school. She really wasn't looking forward to that; it was hard enough seeing Finn and her daddy's' pitiful stares, but having 12+ of her friends stare at her like she was an alien really wasn't something she was going to enjoy.
Kurt, Blaine and Mercedes had come in first, adding to the numerous teddy bears she had received. Mercedes had been the first to cry but after Blaine saw how humiliated Rachel looked watching Mercedes cry over her he had taken lead of the visit, cracking jokes, telling stories…and never had Rachel ever been more thankful for the boy, giving him a small smile and a thank you as they left.
Next had been Tina and Mike, they hadn't stayed for long as Tina couldn't watch Rachel without crying so they'd told her to get better soon and all the usual inspiring messages everyone said thinking they'd somehow made her feel like she hadn't just been hit by a truck.
Surprisingly, next had been Quinn, Rachel had heard someone open the door, she knew someone was there; she could hear them breathing, Rachel couldn't see them though, the stupid body brace preventing her from doing so. She was about to tell them to come in or something but before she could she heard hesitant steps and the next thing she knew Quinn fucking Fabray was standing over her.
Quinn felt like she was going to faint. Seeing Rachel bed bound; unable to sit up made her want to cry. Never in her life had she seen Rachel so powerless and weak. The girl had been warned by Rachels's fathers of the physically fragile state the girl was in, all of them had been prepared to see the body brace in hopes they wouldn't cry, the berry men had also told them that crying only made Rachel feel worse, Mercedes and Tina had already broken that rule, so Quinn willed herself not to cry. She had to be strong, if not for herself then for Rachel.
Licking her lips and taking a deep breath she cautiously approached Rachel's right side. The left side was completely bruised so she went round the other side, Rachel's eyes following her.
'Hey' she said softly not really knowing what to say.
She watched as Rachel swallowed and then responded in a hoarse voice 'Quinn…' her voice cracking at the end.
'do you want some water?' Quinn asked helpfully hearing Rachel's strained voice, when she got a small nod almost unnoticeable, she lifted the jug on the table pouring it into the plastic cup with a straw in it before slowly bringing the straw to Rachel's chapped, dry lips, a sad smile tugging at her lips as she watched the injured brunette slowly drink it, after Rachel pushed the straw out her mouth, Quinn took that as her sign that she was finished. So, after placing the cup down she peered over Rachel again.
'so how-how are you feeling' she asked softly, instantly cursing herself realising that was the dumbest, most insensitive question you could ask the girl who had just been told she was now paralyzed.
Rachel found it funny though, chuckling dryly 'like I've been hit by a truck' she responded, her plan was to make Quinn laugh or something, it was her attempt at making the visit less awkward and sombre. Instead, Quinn looked down at the floor briefly, wringing her hands together. Rachel knew what she was going to say so, before the blonde could even dare try to blame herself Rachel stepped in.
'Don't Quinn, just don't ' she pleaded frustratedly.
'This is my fault Rachel, I texted you, this is my fault' Quinn was close to tears but willed herself not to cry, not now at least.
'You're right you did text me, as well as pretty much all the glee club plus my fathers. I don't remember much but from what I've been told, my injuries are a result of the truck drivers brakes failing to stop, I texted you five minutes before it happened, I wasn't on my phone when it happened' Rachel reassured her, Quinn could see it was hard for Rachel talking about the accident so she left it at that, making light conversation until Quinn pointed out there were other people waiting to see her, so with a promise to come back tomorrow and small smile she left, letting Santana come in.
'Hey Berry' she said with as much strength as she could, her and Rachel weren't exactly close but seeing the brunette like this made Santana realise that Rachel was going to need a friend, a friend who wouldn't coddle her or treat her like glass like the others seemed to be.
Rachel eyed her curiously. Santana sighed 'look Rachel, this sucks, this is a sucky situation and I know they're all weepy and treating you like a baby, so with that in mind I'd like to apologise' Rachels eyebrow rose, this was the first time Santana had ever called her by her first name, though she had to admit everything Santana had said so far was true.
'I am honestly really sorry for the way I have treated you the past couple of years, I was a bitch to you and called you names and it wasn't cool because you haven't done anything to me , and when I came out you were really cool about it because I heard you shouting at Finn for outing me, so I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm sorry. From now on you can consider me your friend, but be warned, I'm not gonna treat you any differently then I treat my other friends now that you're in a chair Nessarose' Santana continued.
Rachel beamed hearing Santana call her 'nessarose' it was a wicked reference, and she knew Santana must have done some research.
'I accept your apology Santana' she smiled.
Santana grinned 'there's not many people outside, most of them are coming tomorrow, they didn't want to overwhelm you, I brought Britt with me, she wants to see you' Santana asked, wondering if the poor girl was too tired.
Luckily, Rachel hummed her approval 'Just tell her not to be too loud, my head hurts' she muttered as she struggled to keep her eyes open.
