Mr. and Mrs. Loud decided to speak to their other children while the Doctors and nurses worked on stabilizing and making Luan comfortable.
As soon as the kids saw their parents with visible tears streaming down their faces they knew something was very wrong. The children huddled close to each other as a way to comfort each other for whatever it was they were about to hear.
"Kids, Luan's sick," Rita began while her husband sat beside her inconsolable.
"I'm certain if the Doctors and nurses will simply allow me back there that I can quickly cure whatever is ailing our comedic sibling," Lisa said with a voice full of confidence as she attempted to enter behind the double doors separating the waiting room from the place where patients were kept.
"I don't think you can help this time honey," Rita said as she pulled Lisa into a hug, she wasn't a huge fan of physical interaction but her mother seemed like she needed a hug and so she complied.
"Luan's sickness is in her brain…a tumor," Lynn Sr. tried to explain through shaking voice.
"I wonder if that bump is why she tortures us every April Fools Day thinking it's funny?" Lynn Jr. wondered out loud.
"So…if Lisa can't cure her, then what can?" Lori asked as she tried wrapping her own brain around the seriousness of the situation.
Lynn Sr. released a primal wail as his wife attempted in vain to comfort him.
"Nothing can," she said simply, sucking all the breath right out of the room.
"Oh, come now mother, medical science has made leaps and bounds in curing all types of ailments, there must be something that can be done!" Lisa insisted.
"Sweetheart…this tumor is on Luan's brainstem," Rita explained calmly.
Lisa's face quickly sunk as the weight of the situation hit her like a freight train.
"So…like, there's nothing anyone can do?" Luna asked as her eyes communicated that she was quickly heading towards a full-blown meltdown.
"Well…we can surround her with plenty of love while we can," Rita said, trying to regain some level of control out of a situation where control was next to impossible.
"What do you mean, while we can?" Lana asked innocently.
Rita buried her face in her hands and wiped the residuals of her tears as she prepared to tell her six-year-old something that most adults can barely comprehend.
"Sweetie…since there isn't any cure for Luan's tumor…eventually…she's going to have to go to heaven,"
"You mean, Luan's gonna die?" Lana asked quietly.
Mr. and Mrs. Loud could only nod.
The kids immediately burst into tears and the family just huddled in a big group hug.
Leni's tender heart allowed her to eventually speak up, "when can we go back to see her?"
Luan didn't quite know what was going on yet, but she knew she was in big trouble, no joke.
First off, the nurses had brought in an ice cream sundae that was the size of her head. She hadn't seen this much ice cream since she had her tonsils out when she was six…she hadn't been able to speak for a week. A week without puns was a pretty painful week for her (though she remembered her family adoring the break). She knew that this was worse though. They were already rewarding her, despite them not doing anything to her.
When she inquired about this the nurses simply said, "it's the least we can do,"
Comedic people aren't supposed to let their guards down and show emotion other than silliness, but she had to admit that she was afraid. She wished her family would come in and give her a big hug, but another part of her wondered if they would even really care.
Her parents and siblings didn't exactly try to hide that sometimes they found her annoying, if not an outright menace. She had tried to keep her tendencies more under control (with the exception of April Fools Day), but sometimes the groans of her siblings burned her more than she let on. She knew that big families often showed love in an untraditional way and she also knew her family thought she was funny, but she still felt unappreciated and like her family might be happier without her.
These thoughts weren't exactly out of nowhere, Luna's roommate words this morning combined with her teachers beliefs that her pranks were heartless, combined with whatever the heck was hurting her head so much made the poor comic feel anything but funny.
She just hoped that the doctors and nurses could get her feeling better soon.
