Chapter 3: Not Going To The Library
Taylor Hebert
"Dungeons and Dragons For Dummies." I held up the book, closely examining the cover.
Before laying it on the floor of the warehouse.
I'd look at it later. I decided.
There was so much I had to do! I had to test my superpowers. Reading could wait, for once.
I had stopped by a warehouse about 20 minutes from my house. It was big enough for anything crazy, but also secure enough to where no one would really notice any noise.
I decided to start with the most basic. Super strength. I was pretty sure 25 STR wasn't average.
And so I punched a wall.
It impacted with a dull thud. No painful shock ran through my body, and the harsh wall didn't even scratch up my hand.
Instead, a spiderweb of cracks littered the surface, some of the wall chipping and breaking off.
I wanted to punch it again, but my eagerness to test my shield abilities was overwhelming.
"Alright, so um, how do I access my new shield form?" I questioned, fastening my shield to my arm. "[Shield Form Change: Leaf]?"
My dull grey shield flashed, and in its place was a round green metal. Just a bit bigger than the original, shaped like a heart facing me. Curves and indents making a leaf pattern, the green jewel still in place.
[Leaf Shield (Small)]
Attack: 3
Defense: 10
[Leaf Storm] (LV: 1)
[Plant Collection 1]
"Huh." I scratched my head. "That solves one problem then. Alright."
I took a deep breath.
"Leaf Storm!"
I felt a pull, a tug, coming from deep in the pit of my stomach.
I could make the force of leaves concentrated or scattered across the room, but only for the timeframe of a few seconds. With a vision in my head I blanket the room with a violent tornado of leaves.
A whirlwind scatters green in every possible direction around me. Anywhere I looked I could see, but I knew that a regular person would have had trouble even opening their eyes.
After a few seconds, it died down.
"Woah."
And that was just from the dead leaf on my windowsill.
I looked around the floor, looking for anything to pick up. The closest thing to me was a rock, one that looked like it had smashed through a nearby window. Probably from a kid, bored from a long day at school.
I pushed it into my shield.
[Rock Shield (Medium)]
Attack: 10
Defense: 35
[Equipped Active Skill]- [Rock Wall] (LV: 1)
Creates a rock wall. Not much else to say.
[Passive Skill Acquired]-[Rock Collection 1]
Allows you to quickly and readily pick out different kinds of rocks and sediment. Are able to conduct adequate petrology.
I was itching to try it out, but I needed more.
My pepper spray weighed heavy in my pocket.
But I mean… no, I couldn't right?
I needed to learn restraint. I needed to keep a clear head. If a gang member comes by-
"Oh, wait. Duh, I have super strength."
What the hell was a gang member going to do?
I quickly took it out, and put it into the jewel on the shield.
[Blinding Heat Shield (Medium)]
Attack: 15
Defense: 15
[Equipped Active Skill]- [Heated Blinding Spray] (LV: 1)
Utilising heat and organic chemicals harnessed to blind enemies, instantly causing anyone in the area to be hit by the effect of the attack. Causes pain and blindness up to a few minutes.
[Passive Skill Acquired]-[Hot Flashes 1]
Allows you to quickly and readily be immune to [Blindness (Small), as well as easily adjusted to hot temperatures.
Woah that was actually really good.
"[Shield Form Change: Rock Shield]!"
The leaf morphed into a large grey block, with a leather strap for me to wield it. The green jewel was still in the same place, but the solid square shaped rock was as large as my entire torso.
"Rock Wall!"
A large slab of rock burst from the ground in front of me, at least 10 feet high and as thick as my shield.
How does defense work again?
While shields are impervious to damage you are not, and the defense rating anywhere on your body reduces the damage you receive to your person. The current shield you have equipped reduces damage by 3.5, and hits with the added force of 10 damage.
3.5 didn't seem like a lot. I frowned to myself. It didn't seem like a lot at all, especially since my whole thing was defense.
Maybe it upgraded over time? Or I could unlock even better shields that seriously upgraded my overall defense.
A pop up appeared on my screen.
Hp: [4,300/4,300] Mp: [2,000/1,700]
"I don't know what either of those are." I confessed, taking in the numbers for a few seconds, trying to decipher their meaning.
Either way, I was just happy to be able to use my power like this, in the safety of the warehouse.
A sudden rumble shook the warehouse, and I tensed in panic.
Hearing the sound of distant screams I raced outside to see the commotion.
The sound of gunfire filled the street, and I could see people running.
I could feel this fear and anxiety crawl up my throat, before a sea of calm washed it away, letting me piece together what was happening.
Gang war.
My eyes darted quickly, barely making out the sight of gang members wielding powerful weapons and firing in a populated area.
My feet started moving. I couldn't stop.
What was I doing?! I didn't even have a costume!
My green eyes locked onto a nearby clothing store, and my jaw set.
It'll have to do.
Chapter 3 everyone! Quite a short one, but I just broke it off from this mass of story that I made in the timeframe of two days. I'll be posting a big chapter in 4 days from now, so I can take a bit of a breather. Leave a comment on what kind of Shield Taylor should absorb next.
