Zuko took a deep breath and let the sea air fill his lungs. He was waiting on the docks on Ember Island waiting for the Southern Water Tribe ship to arrive. Toph stood beside him. She had arrived late last night and was now actively complaining about the state of the metal of the ship his sent.
"Sparky, I'll help you design some new ones. A beginner metalbender would be able the destroy the hull." Zuko smiled down at the greatest Earthbender.
"Thanks Toph. I'll keep that in mind and discuss it with my maritime minister."
"Good! Now how have you been? Thanks for organising this trip. Definitely needed a break."
"Your welcome! I am glad you could make it. I think we all needed this. I've been very busy. It seems everyday there's a new project I have to look over or evaluate the seriousness of death threats. How have you been?"
"Good! We will have our first graduates in a few months, and we got record number applications. I wonder how many of those dunderheads will survive the first month. But about your death threats. Suki and I have been talking about setting up some more permanent security in Cranefish Town. Maybe I could help you with your security too?" Zuko looked at his friend and smiled.
"Thank you Toph, I'd appreciate it."
"But no work here Sparky, this is a holiday."
"Yes, yes I know! I only promised to look over..." The ground rumbled beneath him.
"Zuko!"
"No really it's nothing. One or two documents..."
"You just promised me this was a holiday."
"And it is! I just promised Katara..."
"Oh..." and a vicious smile spread across Toph's face making Zuko heart drop. "Oh I see, you promised Sugarqueen. Well in that case..."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing, we all know you have a soft spot for her."
"No I don't! She's a good friend like you are." "Pfft please spare me, I know when you're lying." Frustrated Zuko pinched the bridge of his nose. "Can we not have this conversation? I just want to run some ideas by her and see if she might like a position as Southern Water Tribe Ambassador." Toph gave a low whistle. Zuko felt his cheeks redden.
"It was my mother's idea, and I doubt she even wants it. Especially with Aang bound to the Air Temples..."
"Whatever you say, but Twinkletoes won't have a say in it I think. Do you know if he's coming here?"
"No, I haven't heard from him, and Katara hasn't mentioned him either. What do you think it means?" Toph simply crossed her arms in annoyance.
"I think I am the only one around here that isn't blind." But before Zuko could question that statement the Southern water tribe vessel came into view and before long laid docked against the pier.
His heart soared with happiness as he saw Sokka first, waving enthusiastically to him and Toph. Suki and Katara appeared on deck as well. With a quick wave they started to disembark.
"Careful now, don't give yourself a heart attack." Toph said cheerfully and took some steps towards the water, feeling a flustered Zuko behind.
He was unprepared for all the feelings rushing through his body as he laid eyes on her again after almost 2 years. Despite wearing very simple travelling garb in soft blue and white, he could swear he had never seen Katara look so radiant. She hadn't grown much in height but had blossomed into a beautiful young woman. Her long wavy dark brown hair was in it's signature half up do, showing off her well defined cheekbones and framing her ocean eyes. The way her simple dress hung off her body showed her curvy yet fit physique. Zuko couldn't help but admire her toned bronze arms and relish the delicate curve of her neck. His heart hammered and he felt blood drain away from his face and pool to his stomach.
'Agni, get a grip! She's your friend'.
He unconsciously tried to brush his hair from his face before realising he'd tied up. He hoped he hadn't looked stupid, but at least he felt a bit more in control of himself and confidently stepped towards Sokka, greeting his brother in arms. Both young men had grown and looked surprisingly similar in their physique. Both tall, with broad shoulders and chests, their arms heavily toned. Sokka's wolf tail had gotten longer too as had Zukos hair, reaching past his shoulders in it's current half up. It had been a while since they trained together but Zuko knew it was only a matter of time before he would be challenged and he looked forward to it. He had always enjoyed Sokka's warm and open demeanour and didn't mind being embraced by the Water Tribe warrior.
"Zuko my man! It's good to see you buddy."
"You too Sokka, it feels like an age."
"Thanks for organising this man, I am so excited. Beach parties, good company and great food. What more can a man want?" Suki punched his arm. "Owww, apart from a beautiful and wonderful girlfriend of course." Suki grinned.
"How romantic you are..." she sighed sarcastically at Sokka before giving Zuko a warm hug.
"Hello Zuko, it's good to see you again. I hope my girls aren't giving you any trouble?"
"It's good to see you too. No, not at all, the Kyoshi Warriors are great as always. But they have missed you these past few weeks." Suki sighed.
"Yes I know, Toph has probably mentioned but I want to look into further reorganising the force to give everyone and us included," she gestured to her and Sokka, "a bit more stability." Zuko nodded in understanding. Travelling between the Fire Nation, the South Pole and Kyoshi Island on a regular basis would be draining for anyone.
"I look forward to hearing your suggestions, though I promised Toph there would be no work this week."
"So you won't be needing my help then?" Her teasing voice went straight to his heart and he grinned at her, before engulfing her in a hug too.
"You know I'll always need you Katara." He said softly. "Whatever time you can spare I'll be eternally grateful. It's very good to see you again." His golden eyes seemed to drown in her vibrant blue eyes. She smiled.
"It's very Zuko to see you too. And since you've asked so nicely I'll happily help."
"You guys don't understand the concept of a holiday do you? Honestly nothing has changed, you all still suck at taking breaks." Toph interrupted and Zuko reluctantly let go of Katara's shoulder that he'd been holding. He swore he could see an evil sparkle in the unseeing milky green eyes of his friend. Katara happily came over to her friend and greeted her warmly. Meanwhile one of the servants came down to inform Zuko that the lunch was ready to be served. This earned a cheer from Sokka and the five of them made their way up to the Summer Palace. Zuko offered to carry Katara's luggage which she gave him gratefully before being pulled into conversation with Toph. Both being bending teachers the two women had lots to talk about and he wanted to give them some space so inside he walked with Sokka and Suki, who filled him in on everything he had missed in the South.
His mother had been right he had really missed his friends.
He had revamped the Summer Palace a few years back. He'd specifically focused on completely renovating his father's rooms to create some new areas, such as guest bedrooms in the others nations styles. He knew his friends would appreciate some reminders of home. His father's old study he had completely demolished to create a peaceful courtyard garden. It had become one of his favourite places. His own bedroom faced it and the Water Tribe room entranced faced it too, as well as having an ocean view. He had been very excited to show Katara, wondering what she thought of it.
"Wow Zuko this is amazing!" She exclaimed as they turned the corner and were greeted by the greenery in the courtyard. The excavation had revealed a natural stream running beneath the palace and Zuko had guided it through the garden space. The sound of water was soothing to his ears.
"Thank you, I am very happy how this turned out." He told her and watched as she explored the different plants and marvelled at the Silver Wisteria growing up pergola that created lovely dappled shade.
"You should be proud, it's a little part of paradise here. I can imagine you'd never want to leave." She said smiling and admired the crystal clear water.
"The gardens in the capital are beautiful too, but I admit I enjoy the peace and quiet here. You know…" he hesitated slightly and felt a blush spreading as Katara looked at him. He cleared his throat. "You know you are always welcome here." Her eyes drowned him and her cheeks turned a soft shade of pink.
"Thank you Zuko." To avoid embarrassing himself any further, he showed her to her room.
"If you need anything let me know. Now take all the time you need to refresh yourself. I'll tell the servants we'll have lunch shortly." He said quickly, not trusting his voice and left.
He didn't see her longing gaze as he walked away.
She sighed to herself, trying to forget his alluring golden eyes, and opened the door. Another gasp escaped her lips. The usual dark cherry wood of the Palace had been painted a dazzlingly white. The walls were decorated with intricate carvings, Water Tribe banners and weapons. Several beautifully woven carpets covered the dark wooden floors. There was a comfortable seating area with a plush sofa and chairs facing the courtyard. There were several cabinets and closets, as well as a Water Tribe styled desk and chairs. But the showstopper was the large magnificent canopy bed by the large half moon window, that Katara realised were actually glass doors that led to a private balcony with an ocean view. The canopy bed was covered with blue and white sheets and a multitude of pillows. Silvery sheer curtains hung above. Completely dazed she let herself fall onto it and couldn't help but feel delighted as the soft mattress that hugged her in an embrace. She wished she'd never have to leave.
Icy dread filled her then. How could she even think that? Of course she couldn't actually stay here. This was only a holiday and soon she would back in one of the Air Temples. They didn't have the same comforts as this, with harder beds and minimal decorations. Certainly no Water Tribe ornaments. She sighed as tears filled her eyes. Being here she couldn't help but compare how it made her feel. She felt far more at home here then there, even if her room hadn't been specifically decorated for her. She hadn't missed how happy it made Zuko to do this for all his friends. He wanted to make new and happy memories in this place, to replace the dreadful ones he'd had. She thought it was sweet how much he cared. She loved seeing that happy smile on his face, seeing the sparkle in his eyes. Those eyes! They seemed to burn right through her. Had she seen them darken in desire? No, they couldn't have and shouldn't have. Zuko was her friend and she was, for better or worse still with Aang. She couldn't think this way; it wasn't fair to either of them. She didn't want to hurt Aang, nor embarrass Zuko with her feelings of desire that he didn't even reciprocate.
She stood back up and headed to the ensuite bathroom. She wasn't surprised by its delicate opulence, a white marble bathtub and clear crystal elements resembling ice. There was even an outdoor section that housed a private hot spring. Spirits help her. She usually wasn't one for luxuries, she hadn't grown up with them, and travelling around the world with the Avatar also didn't provide them. But as the Southern Water Tribe was being rebuild she did incorporate new technologies and being here she couldn't imagine how Zuko must have felt when he and Uncle Iroh had deserted for the first time, living without anything. Aang was very strict when it came to rebuilding the Air Temples as authentically as possible, Katara had given up adjusting some of his views a long time ago. Suki's voice entered her mind. Did she really want the life he was offering her? Would that make her happy?
She splashed some cold water on her face and looked at her own reflection. She hoped Zuko hadn't seen that blush when he told her she would always be welcome here. It felt mortifying that she didn't have any control of her body. She thought back when she saw him at the docks, blood rushing back to her cheeks. He was so handsome, his scar only adding to his charm. His proud angular features, sharp golden eyes and long luscious black hair. It had grown longer these past few years, and his half top knot made her feel hot all over. She wondered what it was like to run her fingers through his hair. What did it feel like to be wrapped in his strong warm arms?
'Tui and La Katara, get a grip!'
She focused her attentions on her baggage, unpacking all her belongings. Her closet already contained a few items, mainly reds and whites but she was also surprised to find a dark blue dress. It was a simple cut with a horizontal neckline and a long billowing skirt. A lighter blue wrap highlighted the waist. Its long sleeves were sheer and would be great in the Fire Nation heat. She marvelled at the light silky material and ran her finger along it. It was stunning. Her own simple outfits seemed to pale in comparison. But as much as she wanted to change into it, she decided to save it for the Coronation Celebrations. Knowing Zuko, she was sure he didn't mind if she took it to the Palace. Her comb would look stunning with it. Had he planned it? Excitement pooled in her stomach at the thought. She changed into one of her own outfits. Over the years she had collected and made some Water Tribe outfits that better fitted the other nations. Her light tunic and skirt would be perfect.
Checking her hair and face a final time in the large mirror she headed towards the dining hall Zuko had pointed out to them before. Sokka and Suki were already there, and not too long after her own arrival Toph and Zuko joined them and they all dug in.
Lunch was as delicious as she had always reminder and it was such fun to all be together again, although they missed Aang's presence. Toph had looked at her critically as she tried to explain his absence.
"I am sure he will join us later. He isn't one to miss spending time at a lovely place as this." She said, trying to reassure herself more then anyone else and she tried to stop her rising frustration. Why hadn't he written her? Why hadn't he responded to Zuko's invitation himself? When would he become less selfish and think more about others, others that didn't think or feel like he did?
Thankfully her brother and friends didn't bother her about it and they all actively decided to have as much fun as possible to fill up the avoid.
As Sokka had predicated the first few days there were beach parties galore. The high of summer had faded with resulted in lovely temperatures to enjoy the sunny beaches. Katara loved being in the water, surfing on her iceboard. Sokka and Suki challenge Zuko and Toph repeatedly for Beach Ball and the four played match after match. To Katara's surprise Sokka and Suki eventually won. After a lovely day, they wound down with some delicious dinner and played pai sho with tea far into the night. Everyone could finally relax.
They fell into a comfortable routine. Zuko and Suki were usually the first one to rise and would have some morning tea. Katara and Sokka rose later in the mornings and would join them by the beach ratio. Once Toph awoke they would head to breakfast together and discuss the day ahead. Apart from the beach they had gone to one of the nearby towns where Katara, Sokka and Suki had splurged on different fashions, trinkets and gadgets. Toph and Zuko had strolled behind them, first bemused and later annoyed when Sokka couldn't decide between two different belts from two different stalls. Katara meanwhile had wistfully debated to get a silver bracelet that was decorated with mother of pearl and abalone shell in a flower pattern. It was far more than she wanted to pay. She wouldn't have any use for it later on. Suki and Toph had disagreed with that statement and had urged her to get it. But in the end she decided against it, with pain in her heart. Aang would probably think it was ridiculous anyway. She didn't see that Zuko had discreetly gone back to the vendor when the rest of the group were deciding where to get lunch.
On one of the final days they had hiked up one of the many dormant volcanos on the island. The lush grown provide the perfectly cool shelter on the way up and after several hours they were treated to magnificent views of the island.
"You know, sometimes I forget how beautiful the Fire Nation is." Sokka had admitted and clapped Zuko on his shoulder. "I am glad we're friends so you can show us."
"Believe me Sokka, it can still surprise me as well. Usually I am stuck in the Capital and don't leave the Palace for days. Being around nature clears my head." Zuko couldn't help but see Katara nod agreeing at his words. His heart skipped a beat and Toph snorted beside him.
"Yeah I am sure the view is stunning."
"Shut it Toph." He hissed earning him a laugh. Thankfully the rest seemed oblivious. Sokka took Suki's hand and went further up the path.
"Come on Suki, I want to see if there are any Panda Lilies here. I remember when we were in Makapu, Aang and I found them in the volcano there. They would look beautiful in your hair."
"Are you sure Sokka? I've heard they are extremely rare."
"That's why they would look stunning, a rare flower for a rare beauty." He said and gave her a quick kiss. Suki blushed happily and Katara's heart filled with happiness seeing them so in love. Zuko and Toph exchanged exasperated looks and Toph rolled her eyes.
"I am stuck here with idiots."
"Tell me about it."
"Oh don't start Sparky, you're an even more sappy romantic under that tough exterior."
He really couldn't disagree; she always knew when he was lying.
That night Suki had a crown of Panda Lilies as they all sat around a beach bonfire, enjoying the night sky.
"I miss this." Toph had sighed into the cooling air.
"Yeah me too." Katara agreed with her, laying down on the comfortable sand.
"As happy as I am that the war is over, we had so much freedom." The young earthbender said. "I love teaching but there are so many responsibilities now, stuff you can't just run away from."
"We're not kids anymore chasing some ideals, we have to enforce them now. More people are counting on us than ever before." Zuko added.
"Yeah it feels like an age ago doesn't it? Katara remember how Gran Gran helped us go after Aang. Did you ever expect we would find ourselves here?" Sokka asked and his sister laughed.
"Here? On the beach in the Fire Nation, best friends with the Fire Lord? Oh of course." Everyone laughed around her. 'Possibly in love with the Fire Lord? Definitely not!' She gritted her teeth, pushing away the thought. Thankfully Suki started telling a tale about one of Avatar Kyoshi's adventures and she focused her mind on that, away from her heart.
As midnight passed Sokka, Suki and Toph excused themselves to go to bed. Katara declined. It was a full moon and sleep would be difficult. Instead she went closer to the sea, letting the incoming waves wet her feet. She was surprised to hear Zuko behind her.
"Do you mind if I join you? I'd like to talk to you." Her heart hammered soloudly in her chest she lost her voice. Instead she simply nodded and he seated himself next to her.
They sat together, watching the waves shimmer in the moonlight. Neither had to say anything to know they both thought about the evening after their mission together.
"Are you cold?" Zuko offered after a while, sending a shiver through her spine.
"A little…" She said meekly, but instead of making another small fire, he angled himself slightly behind her so she could lean against his warm frame. Sparks travelled through her and she became hyper aware of her surroundings. Her breath, his heart, their closeness and the waves rumbled in her ears. She managed to mumble a thank you. He didn't seem to be affected by their closeness a lot. Instead he was straight to the point.
"I've been talking a lot with my mother, your father and my advisors and we've decided it would be best if we would have a permanent Southern Water Tribe representative at the Palace. Trade agreements are increasing steadily and will grow more with every expansion in Cranefish Town. Like I told you in my last letter I'd really like your advice on how to handle those negotiations and situations. So I wanted to ask you before anyone else if you would consider such a position?"
"You mean as a… a…"
"Southern Water Tribe Ambassador, yes." She couldn't help but turn to him in surprise. Dark golden eyes engulfing her. Tui and La, why was he this close? He saw her reaction and misinterpreted it.
"Don't worry, I know you're very busy with teaching at the South Pole and renovating the Air Temples with Aang…" Why did the latter sound so bitter in his ears? He didn't mean it too. "I don't want to pressure you into anything! I already told my mother you were busy… but she urged me to ask incase…"
"Yes." She replied almost breathless. Now it was Zuko's turned to looked surprised.
"What? Are… are you sure?" She bit her lip.
"I… I don't know… I mean you're right, I am busy with things but…" She sighed softly and closed her eyes. Taking a few deep breathes she ran the idea through her mind. She couldn't believe she had so easily agreed. She honestly couldn't but she wanted to. The opportunity to do something more. To represent her people. To help with the rebuilding of multiple nations and to be here… If she would refuse she would regret that for the rest of her life. She looked at him. He smelled of smoke, sandalwood and something musky she couldn't quite place, it was entrancing.
"I've been thinking for a while now to do something different. If I am honest, I am not really happy right now." She looked up at the ocean and felt his concerned gaze on her. "It's one of the reasons I am currently at the South Pole alone. Aang and I… I don't think we can make this work. We both want different things. He doesn't really understand that I need something different."
"Have you guys been able to talk about it?" She shook her head softly.
"It's… it's very difficult to discuss or talk about."
"How? You've been together for so long. Surely you're able to communicate your wants and needs? Aang must know that someone like you can't be tied down?"
"Zuko, it's been going on for a while now…"
"How long?" She exhaled sadly as his sharp response.
"Some years."
"Agni Katara." He muttered, trying to hold back his anger. He felt his hands balled into fists. It hurt him to hear her so unhappy. He knew there had been some problems… but nothing like this.
"I know, I know. It's stupid. Every time I think we are getting better, something happens. Or when I think it's the end, something else will repair or disguise the problems. But I don't know how long I can continue this. I always expected it would work you know? We've experienced as much together. He loves me so much and he needs me. But…"
"But that's not enough." Zuko said simply and she nodded.
"I don't feel like myself anymore. I need a change."
"And this could be it?"
"Yes I think so…" She breathed and Zuko felt his heart swell in hope, it was almost painful. Agni he could kiss her. He sharply breathed in, pushing the impulse away.
"It… it would be an honour if you would accept Katara believe me. But I think you should first talk to Aang before you make up your mind."
"Yes of course, absolutely. I just wish he was here now."
"I understand." He said softly and they fell into silence, both needing time to think. Katara couldn't help but lean closer into his chest, gazing at the moon. She had a lot to think about.
A while later he walked her back to the Palace and to her room.
"Thank you for the lovely day today again Zuko. And thank you for your offer. I promise you I will fully consider it." She said and gave him a smile.
"The honour was all mine Katara. Whatever you decide I will respect completely." He promised seriously and before he had time to think about it further he raised one of her hands to his lips, sealing the promise.
Gold and blue met and sparks seemed to fly like lightening.
"Katara? Zuko? Is everything alright?"
The burning sensations in their bodies were doused by ice.
"Aang?"
