Chapter 3
Traveling in the company of the world's strongest living thing and a potential Queen, logic would dictate that Naoko and Kenichi be careful with their words. However, as Felt and Reinhard were both eager to learn more about Subaru, the flow of conversation quickly turned into an informal one.
"Ah, so that's why he had such strange things with him! He'd gone to buy them!" Felt exclaims, referring to the various things Subaru had on his person the day they'd met.
"It seems the day he disappeared isn't far from the day we met him," Reinhard concludes, unaware that those two instances were mere hours apart if Subaru's restarts weren't taken into consideration.
Recounting the last time they'd seen Subaru was hard on both parents, but doing so helped them to confirm Subaru's time of arrival here. They could permanently let go of the thought that he'd run away. No, he'd been brought here against his will, just like they had been. He never intended to get away from them, they didn't cause Subaru's disappearance. Naoko and Kenichi both let out a huge sigh of relief and Naoko even shed a tear. Subaru must've felt so alone. Her son must've been so scared. None of that mattered now, she was going to see him and comfort him all he needed.
Reinhard then proceeded to tell them about his first encounter with Subaru. How he'd gotten himself in trouble with a bunch of thieves and proceeded to shout for help, albeit in a more feminine manner than most would. Reinhard chuckled when remembering the first time he'd met him.
Subaru's parents wasted no time thanking Reinhard for saving Subaru. Only a few hours in this world and Subaru was already in trouble! Naoko and Kenichi were worried at how often their son seemed to get in trouble. A worry that only got worse, when Felt decided to ignore Reinhard's subtle warnings and Kenichi's and Naoko's worried looks and in elaborate detail describe how Natsuki Subaru decided to save complete strangers from the hands of the Bowel Hunter. Reinhard was truly worried about his lady's forthcoming nature.
During Felt's retelling of that fateful night Kenichi, who had previously been relatively composed, showed signs of boiling anger. How could he have been so careless! While he was doing absolutely nothing, Subaru had been in constant danger! What a worthless parent he was! If he ever found this 'Bowel Hunter' he would-
"Do not think that way Kenichi-san," Reinhard says, interrupting Kenichi's dangerous train of thought. "That destructive mindset is one that yields no good. And besides, it's a bit of hidden information, so I'd appreciate it if Felt-sama and Subaru's parents don't repeat it anywhere else, but Subaru and the rest of the Emilia camp have already killed her." (AN: I know in canon that nobody knows but it's my story so it don't matter)
"Ehhhh! Oi you useless knight, why didn't you tell me this earlier!" Felt yelled, outraged at this reveal. She wanted to see justice come to that psycho murderer too! In all her wisdom all Felt could muster up now was a pout.
For a while after that, only the sound of the earth dragon pulling the carriage could be heard. Occasionally the driver would shout something to the adjacent carriages carrying their luggage. Inside the carriage, however, there was a deafening silence.
Both parents of the world-renowned Natsuki Subaru only grew more worried every time they heard something new about his time in Lugnica. Their poor boy, he'd been through so much in their absence, but despite that, he'd only risen above his challenges. It'd seem he'd become truly worthy of his fame. Would their arrival only bring bad memories of a time where he'd been stuck in his room, incapable of moving forward in life? They would confidently say the Subaru of four months ago would be ecstatic to see them. But the Subaru of the present was a changed man who'd overcome plenty of things without their support, and as such, they would be nothing more than a reminder of his worthless past.
Felt and Reinhard, both of whom lacked parental love in the traditional sense, looked at the worrying couple in front of them with envy in their eyes. But neither the proud Felt nor the hero of heroes Reinhard would ever voice out these thoughts.
With such thoughts, the carriage moved forward, getting closer to it's destination of Costul, in the Mather's Domain.
With nearly a day and a half of travel, the dragon carriage carrying the Natsuki couple had finally reached it's end goal-Costul. No unidentified carriage would be entered inside the gates of the Miload Mansion without prior notice after all, and Kenichi's and Naoko's appearance would be as sudden as the word 'sudden' could get. Getting down from the carriage, Naoko and Kenichi turned around to thank their companions.
"Thank you Reinhard-kun, Felt-chan it was nice, meeting more of our Subaru's friends," says Naoko who then pulls Felt into a hug.
"Um, dear, I don't think you should be so familiar with the possible Queen of this country," adds Kenichi nervously. But Felt unconsciously returning the hug eases his worries, this was fine, she was still a child after all.
"Once again thank you, Reinhard-kun, you've saved Subaru on multiple occasions it seems and so we couldn't thank you enough for that," Kenichi bows to the Sword Saint, truly grateful that he had looked after Subaru when Kenichi himself wasn't able to do so.
"Oh! The pleasure is all mine Kenichi-san, after all, Subaru has done far more for this world in four months than I've managed in my entire life," Reinhard says once again downplaying his worth with all his might.
And with that, the blonde-haired girl and her red-haired knight got into the carriage and made their way to their own destination. Leaving Kenichi and Naoko to make their way to their son.
The Natsuki couple made their way around the town, asking for directions, and slowly but surely were reaching their desired location. However, the longer they stayed in town, the more weird looks they were getting. Had they miscalculated somewhere? They'd been extremely lucky so far, meeting very nice people who were more than willing to help them. Had their luck run out? Were the people here not as kind as they'd hoped? All these thoughts were personified when a shirtless young blonde came right up to them.
"Alrigh', so 're you the people who the townsfolk have been all worried abou'?" He asked loudly. The boy was confidently baring his teeth at them. Teeth which were quite sharp noted Kenichi and Naoko.
"Um, we don't know what you're talking about young man, we were just trying to make our way to the 'Miload Mansion'. We have someone we want to meet," Kenichi said, sounding more confident than he felt.
If such a kind-looking Reinhard can be the most powerful man in existence then he didn't want to think about the possible strength of such an obviously powerful person.
"Not to startle anyone but it would seem they're pretty harmless Garfiel, don't just randomly scare people," another voice came from behind the violent youth, this new voice belonged to a taller boy with grey hair and an odd fascination with green clothes.
"My name is Otto," the youth introduces himself. "Used to be a humble merchant until unfortunate circumstances led me to become the minister of internal affairs at the Emilia camp. And this violent child," he says, indicating the blonde boy, "is Garfiel, the head of all things fighting in the Emilia camp, so please forgive him for being cautious when two complete strangers start asking about the mansion."
The odd duo of Otto and Garfiel now looked at Kenichi and Naoko, waiting for an explanation. If anything was amiss, Garfiel was ready for it. With tension in the air at an all-time high, Kenichi wasn't certain at what to do. Would revealing what they'd come here for make the situation worse? Would they undergo torture to make sure they weren't lying? Or would it speed up the process of meeting Subaru? Kenichi was in a bind.
This is where Naoko showed her true skill, the skill of completely disregarding the mood of the conversation which had been successfully passed on to Subaru.
"Oh! Such good friends Subaru has dear! Willing to threaten strangers for the safety of the people. It's sad that we're being seen as such when we just want to see our son but it can't be helped! Sooner or later this has to happen. So Otto-kun, Garfiel-kun, take us to Subaru please, it's been four months since we saw him and this mother is tired of waiting."
Kenichi, Otto, and Garfiel could only stare at Naoko's bluntness. Otto had been thoroughly taken aback by this and Kenichi was wondering if Naoko had thought this through. All that got washed away in an instant when Garfiel began laughing like there was no tomorrow.
"Hah! Spoken just like Captain's mom! No need for any checks, we 'ere worried for nothin' Otto-bro, let's quickly go back to the Mansion. Four months ya said? The Captain's gonna love this surprise, c'mon!" Happily, Garfiel dragged all of the tension out of the air.
And so, Natsuki Kenichi and Natsuki Naoko made their way to the Mansion.
