Chapter 3
The Evolving Battlefield
The current situation of the terrorist girl known as Kallen was by no means a good one. Even as she managed to do her best to fend off the military on her own, what she could hope to accomplish alone was nowhere near what she would like to. She was just a single person fighting alone in an outdated Glasgow, and one that had already taken significant damage in her battle earlier. With her remaining energy continuing to tick away on her monitor, she was very cognizant of the time she had left to even be able to fight at all. And once she was down, what were Ohgi and the others going to do? And not just the rest of her group, but the residents of Shinjuku? They were all outnumbered and outgunned, and without a real plan of defense. They were essentially flailing around and resisting what was beginning to feel like the inevitable at this point.
She was loathe to admit it, but this situation might just be a hopeless one.
And a situation that was about to get all the more worse, as a pair of Sutherlands arrived on her location. One of which was piloted by someone already familiar with the opponent. "Look what we've got here. Our friend in the Glasgow is here for another round." Jeremiah Gottwald was quite pleased with the current turn of events. He had let the enemy escape as per Prince Clovis and General Bartley's plan to discover the terrorists' base. But now, orders had changed. The hunt had truly begun now.
As Jeremiah took aim, Kallen wasted no time in making her escape. Controlling her old Glasgow, she got out of there just as the Sutherland fired several shots in her direction. To say she was not optimistic about her odds would be her understatement. Down and arm and outnumbered was not a good situation to be in even if the hardware on both sides were equal. But the Glasgow she used wasn't even in top condition to begin with, their ability to service it limited. Parts were hard for their group to come by and their resources in obtaining them was hindered by a number of factors. All of that was reason enough to avoid a direct confrontation.
Then again, did she even have chance in a one-on-one? Again she thought about the state of her machine. The arm she had lost earlier was bad enough that she was constantly thinking about what she could be able to do without it. But that came back to the quality of the thing in question. It had already jammed once before, so how log until another incident like that? What if something else malfunctioned? Weapons not functioning was a bad situation on its own, but what if entire limbs stopped working? What if she lost her landspinners or camera? It was all over for her if something else broke.
As if to drive home how bad her situation was, she heard a warning go off, alerting her to her unit's power. "Damn it, just thirty minutes left!" Either she stayed and fought and was overwhelmed, or she ran away until she ran out of power. Either outcome, it didn't look like it would be favorable for her.
"The west entrance!" A voice suddenly came over her Knightmare's communications. But it was not that of Ohgi, or anyone else that she recognized. "Use the train tracks to move to the west entrance!"
"Who is this!? How do you know this code!?" she demanded. No one outside of their group should be able to come over this frequency. So who was this guy suddenly ordering her guy around? How could he even contact her? Had he taken a communicator from one of her comrades, maybe by force? Or maybe it was the one she lost? Or maybe he had just intercepted and gotten the right channel? Either way, she wasn't about let this slide.
"That doesn't matter. If you want to win, you're just going to have to trust me."
"To win?"
It was then that she realized that the idea of winning in this situation was something that hadn't even crossed her mind. That she had seeming accepted that victory was unachievable for her in this situation. Had she even thought surviving was impossible? She wasn't sure she wanted the answer to that question, honestly. But there was something she was absolutely certain of.
Yes, she absolutely wanted to win.
She wasn't sure she could trust this mystery guy, but she had made her up her mind. She had nothing left to lose at this point. No matter the choice she made in the options she had considered earlier, she knew neither would lead to victory. Neither of them offered her certainty of her survival. So she decided that as risky as her situation was was accepting his command, she would heed it. Any chance was better than no chance. And so she altered her Knightmare Frame's course, and went for the train tracks. Once she arrived at the tracks themselves, her machine leaped up and onto them, going in the direction she was told. "Okay. What am I supposed to do now?" Her voice sounded a bit panicked, but it couldn't be helped. Especially when she didn't receive an immediate response.
And naturally, her pursuers had not given up the chase. "Pathetic Eleven. I was hoping you'd put up more of a fight, but I guess I expected to much from this hunt." Jeremiah commented to himself. Gone was the fighting spirit it had shown earlier. Perhaps he had put too much fear into the pilot during their first encounter, was a thought he had. Then again, had it had a chance to resupply? Then of course, the machine was looking to him like it could fall apart any second now. No matter the reason, it looked like this wasn't going to be as challenging or fun as he had initially hoped.
At some point, during a time that Kallen wasn't sure how much time had passed, it was then that she saw something she hadn't expected. A train was moving towards them on the track. Why was a train even running right now? Before she could dwell further on the situation, the mystery voice spoke once more. "Since you trusted me, you're going to win. Jump onto the train!"
"Gotcha!" She didn't need to be told anything more on this order. She had already put her trust in his promise, so arguing why she should was not something to be considered. With a leap, her Knightmare flew threw the air and over the front car of the train and bounced off the second car.
Her pursuers were not to be deterred by this though. "You think you can get way with this distraction, do you?" Jeremiah was growing board of this game of cat and mouse now that the Glasgow pilot seemed to be only focused on escape. He moved his Sutherland to catch the train and with his Knightmare's effort, slowed it to a stop. Once it had fully grinded to a halt, he ordered his companion "You, go after the Glasgow!"
"Yes, my lord!" he replied, and his Sutherland leaped into the air. But it was at that moment that something unforeseen happened. While in midair, the Sutherland was suddenly struck by two slash harkens to the side, unable to dodge while airborne. Its head was knocked off, and it fell to the ground and slid off the tracks in a heap. The status of the pilot was left unknown to Jeremiah, the ejection block never triggering.
Turning to source, Jeremiah was greeted by another surprise. The culprit that had struck down the other soldier was a Knightmare, but not a Glasgow. He saw the familiar sight of a Britannian Sutherland peaking out from a nearby building. "What the hell? Friendly fire?" He was nearly speechless that such an incident could occur. Who the hell did its pilot think they were to be so careless!? "Whats your name and your unit!?" he demanded to know the identity, intending for them to face the full consequences for such a screw up like this. "We're after the one-armed Glasg-"
His words were cut off by his next shock as the Sutherlnad aimed its firearm at Jeremiah and began to open fire on him! The realization of the gravity of the situation finally sunk in. The previous attack had been no accident. The one in that Sutherland was not a member of the Britannian military, but one of the terrorists! He tried to get back, turning his own Sutherland's land spinners into reverse, only for one of his legs to explode from the enemy fire. Pulling out his own Knightmare's assault rifle to fire back, he took aim. "You, son of a-"
But he was cut off as a scream over the speakers of it reminded him of his original target. Kallen charged her Glasgow at him, not even needing to be told to take advantage of the opening. Knowing the tide had turned against him, Jeremiah took the only option he had to ensure his survival and pulled a lever at his side, manually activating his ejection system and rocketing his cockpit out of there to safety.
While Kallen found it unfortunate that she hadn't been able to finish the enemy off, she wasn't about to ignore the positive outcome here. Against all odds, she had survived! And it was obvious the only reason that she had come out on top was her mystery contact. "You saved me! But how on earth did you het a hold of a Sutherland?" she had so much questions for the man who had brought about this outcome. But when she looked over to the building he had attacked from, she saw that the Knightmare was nowhere to be found. It looked like he had cleared out of there after his last attack while she was preoccupied. "Where did he go...?"
"Kallen!" A familiar voice coming from outside her Knightmare, she was met with a surprise. Ohgi along with Tamaki, Minami and Inoue were running towards her. "What the hell was that radio message earlier?"
"What? He contacted you guys too?" she said through her Knightmare's external speakers, her surprise at the situation coming through clear to all.
"Sure did. Yoshida's group is on the way too." Sure enough, she could see Yoshida and Sugiyama in the distance, meaning all of the core members of their group, sans the still MIA Nagata, accounted for. Others were also gathering on the orders given. All present were quite confused by what seemed to be going on. Who was this guy that had shown up out of nowhere, was the primary question on their mind. How he had gotten in touch with them was also a primary concern of some, but they all were wondering what his aim here was. While the help he had given Kallen was certainly appreciated, many were warry about this whole situation.
It was at that moment that Ohgi's communicator signaled the return of the mystery savior's communication. "Are you in charge?"
"Uh, yeah." Ohgi replied. There was hesitation in his tone, but he wanted to hear the man out. At the very least, he had saved Kallen's life. He owed the the man that much at the very least.
"I present to you the cargo of that train. They're tools for your victory. If you want to use them to win, then follow my orders." he instructed.
Puzzled by what he was saying, they all approached the train to inspect the cars. Kallen used her Glasgow to open the first car, and they were all met with perhaps the biggest shock of the day. Her mouth was agape, speechless by the sight before her. The compartment was loaded with Knightmares! And not old Glasgows like hers, but Sutherlands! They appeared to be in perfect condition, and fully armed unlike her Glasgow.
How was this possible? The lengths it took their group to get a workable Glasgow was a seemingly herculean effort. But she couldn't imagine what it would take to get Sutherlands. Just moments ago, she had been shocked that her rescuer had used one of his own. She never expected him to have more then one. And it wasn't just this one car, as Inoue and Tamaki informed them that the next two cars were full of them as well. It was the same story in every car.
"All this... How is all of this even possible...?" In Kallen's mind, this situation was nothing short of a miracle.
"Woman in this Glagow!"
"Y-yes!"
"Stay where you are. Your unit is gonna run decoy."
"Understood." She had taken a risk earlier. She had some doubts even as she heeded his offer. She had none of those right now. He had saved her back there, and now offered her group this gift. She was absolutely willing to hear him out.
"Energy filler status?"
"About fifteen minutes worth."
"Then recharge it. In ten minutes, I'll contact you with your next instructions."
From his new location, hidden away from everyone so that he could focus, Lelouch took a deep breath. "This is wearing me out more than expected." Being on the battlefield was more stressful than he had expected. He had expected it to an extent, thought he had prepared himself mentally, but as was the case with most things in life, actually experiencing it was a different matter entire.
He then looked at the chess piece he held in his hand, the black King piece. Yes, this was indeed a new game, but in a way, it was no different than his usual. Just like those, he was have to use his wits and strategic prowess. Just like the game he had played earlier this day, he was taking over for a game already in progress, from a weaker and disadvantageous position. That was why he would need to steel himself, and muster all of his own determination. Because much like the games he usually played, he was indeed gambling on this one, too. But what he was betting this time was not money, but his very own life was the stake in this one.
"Hey, Lelouch." his new companion spoke up. He was surprised he had remained silent during his communications. Even though he had requested his silence when communicating with the terrorists, he had worried he might speak up anyway and say something stupid. He was pleased that those fears were unwarranted.
"What is it?"
"I get that the situation is pretty serious right now." He had watched same events that Lelouch had seen, and watched the efforts his partner had taken in preparing everything, like taking the robots of those others soldiers with that weird this he could do, tricking them to open up so he could use that power to get them to give up theirs, just like that woman before. It was a very serious and dangerous situation that Lelouch was working towards getting out of. "Isn't there anything I can do to help out?"
"Probably not." he replied flatly as he went about his continued preparations, not taking his eyes off the monitor. He had pulled up the monitor displaying all of the enemy locations, their IFF broadcasting clearly to him.
"Are you sure?"
"You're pretty small compared to the enemy we'll be facing. Judging from earlier, you have pretty good physical strength, but not enough to make a difference against a Knightmare Frame. You probably couldn't outrun one, either. Those fireballs you can use seem to have some force behind them, but I doubt that they have enough force or heat behind them to damage a Knightmare." His list of assessments seemed harsh and unfeeling, but Agumon knew he wasn't doing so to put him down, just giving his honest evaluation. He didn't particularly get much about how these Knightmare Frames worked, but he understood enough to see the key points that mattered. The robots were stronger than him is the only point that really mattered.
Agumon looked at the monitor, not really making much sense of the display. To him, it just looked like little dots on a screen. He didn't get much of what was going on. But he at least knew from asking earlier, those dots were enemies. But he could tell that Lelouch understood much more than that. He didn't seemed bothered that there was a lot of dots.
"So you're gonna beat all the enemies with your plan?"
"That certainly is the idea." He had set up up the chess board he picked up earlier. Partly due to his fondness for the game, it was easy for him to visualize the battle at hand in terms of the game. And how appropriate that his opponent in this game was one as familiar to him as Clovis.
That brought back memories, as many a game was played with his elder half-brother. Games that he, of course, always won. It gave him insight to how Clovis might approach the battle. He would often be aggressive when victory seemed in his grasp. But that aggressive style to press his advantage was one that also bordered on carelessness. He would leave areas exposed. And if that trait of his hadn't changed, it made Lelouch's strategy and goals in this battle clear.
Kaname Ohgi was still in disbelief at the situation he now found himself in. He had never expected to be able to get inside the cockpit of a Sutherland. But sure enough, here he now was. Each machine had the activation key and codes ready to go.
"Hey! You sure about this whole thing?" One of his companion, one Shinichiro Tamaki, voiced his concerns from right outside his new Knightmare. "These things have all had their IFFs removed. What if this is all one big trap?" From his perspective, this was all too perfect. It was too good to be true. There had to be some kind of catch.
Ohgi found himself disagreeing with him. "The other side has all the advantages in this battle. They don't need to spring an elaborate trap like this." They had been in the process of being completely overwhelmed. Their only Knightmare was about to be taken out. So why bother giving them the ability to fight back? That just wouldn't make any sense, and just seemed counterproductive to the situation they were in. He didn't know what was going on, but this sure didn't feel like a trap to him.
He was going about telling his group to get ready and get to the assigned points when the voice contacted him once more. "P1, can you move? It operates basically the same as what you're used to." P1 had been the name given to him. The one instructing them had given each of them a code, a letter like P in his case, with a number.
"Can't you tell us who you are? At least your name?"
"I can't do that. What if these signals are being intercepted? Anyway, if Q1 is on schedule, enemy Sutherlands, probably two of them, should reach you in about 23 seconds. Shoot them through the wall." Q1 was Kallen, who was acting as bait in this situation as instructed.
Though he could here Tamaki's doubts and see that many were skeptical, he had already made his decision. The odds were overwhelmingly against them before this guy had showed up, with almost certainly zero chance of coming out on top. So, like Kallen before them, he knew that they were in a position where there was almost nothing left to lose. "Everyone, double-check your weapons. Make sure you're ready."
"Enemy spotted at point F-31!"
"A feint, eh? How novel." For his part, Clovis la Britannia was amused that they would try their hand at something like this at this stage. By now, they had a good idea of what this group was made of. Though they had fielded a Knightmare, it would appear that single unit was all they had. The minor resistance they faced at this juncture seemed to be from artillery fired by people on foot. They didn't seem to have anything more. They didn't pose a threat at all to their vastly superior forces.
"Tell Lazlo Squad to go straight in. Have Eugen and Valerie strike from the rear!" Bartley ordered. A simple pincer like this would be more than enough to deal with a single enemy unit like this.
From his throne, Clovis was smirking, assured that his this would put a swift stop to this last desperate attempt from the rebels. But just as they were about to reach the point to strike, there was suddenly an alert and the signal from the two flanking Knightmares changed. "Sir Eugen and Sir Valerie, both lost." one of his staff reported. Indeed, the two Lost signals were there for all to see.
"What? An ambush?" This was...not the outcome that should have happened. How could he have misjudged the situation? Was this a fluke? Did they have stronger weaponry than they initially appeared to? And more importantly, how had they acted with such precise timing to their actions?
From his hidden location, Lelouch let out a light chuckle as he watched his monitor. "An ID signal can be a double-edged sword, dear brother." he said, knowing the confusion he must be facing at this moment. Indeed, while the data could prove useful to allies, should an enemy like himself acquire that very data, all of their actions and movements would be plain as day. Stripping the IFFs from the Knightmares he gave to the terrorists, their movements wouldn't appear on their system for tracking their troops. More importantly though, it would help obfuscate where his information was coming from. They would first assume that he was listening it to their transmissions before they realized he was using their IFFs and location data. 'As long as the terrorists follow my orders, my task at hand is sure to be completed.'
"P1, P4 and P7. Move one hundred meters to the right and fire your Slash Harkens towards Three o'clock." he commanded, telling them to deal with the squad of Knightmares heading for Q1. "P5, ready?"
Agumon watched Lelouch issue his commands, telling someone to get the jump on another enemy, or to surprise them or set up some trap. He watched on the monitor as dot after dot was replaced with a box that said "LOST" repeatedly. Lelouch would tell the guys over the radio to do something and more "LOST" would appear. While it might not look like much from his perspective, he understood enough to know that meant enemies were being beaten. He wanted to be able to help out in some way, but at least everything was going smoothly. But it did leave him with one question in all of this."
"So, what is the goal?" he voice his question between orders.
"In chess, the goal is to put the King in an inescapable position." Lelouch replied. "And that is the plan here. Our target is the King in this battle, Clovis himself."
He thought back to the game he had played hours ago, though it also felt like a whole lifetime ago to him now. When he had been just an ordinary student, or as much as someone like him could be. In many respects, that game and this battle were similar. Both were something he entered into after they had already begun. Both were games that appeared at first glance to be all but over, one decisive strike away from ending. And both of his opponents were people who seemed assured of their victory.
And, he was more than willing to bet, much like the nobleman he played earlier, his brother's attitude was shifting and his confidence disappearing. He only wished that he could see the look on his face right now.
By now, with Clovis and his staff, the situation had changed and the atmosphere on the bridge were completely different to how it had been earlier. And much to their horror, it had been learned that the terrorists had somehow gotten access to weapons that they shouldn't have. How the terrorist had gained their own military weaponry was something that they could not understand. And in such numbers like this? One or two would be one thing, but this many should be an impossibility given security and functions that should prevent theft. It was almost as if they had been handed over by people already piloting them. But that wasn't at all possible, right?
"Sir Glaube has ejected!" one of the staff reported, another pilot shot down by the terrorists.
"Change our codes! They're intercepting our transmissions!" Bartley barked at them. He was panicked, just as much Prince Clovis, which made the situation all the worse. They should not be in a position like this to begin with!
"We already have, sir! Four times!"
"Then do it again!
"This failure is unacceptable!" Clovis declared as he stood up from his seat, becoming increasingly furious. How dare these terrorists make a mockery of him! It was humiliating enough that they had made off with his research subject, but now he was losing to them on the battlefield? This would absolutely not be tolerated.
"Forgive me, your highness!"
"Good afternoon!" Lloyd Asplund said as his face appeared on the monitor, much to the irritation of Clovis and his staff. "Things seem to be going south right now. I'd say it's time to deploy ASEEC's special weapon!" His cheerful interruption was by no means appreciated by those he was contacting.
"R2, fire anchor." Lelouch ordered as he picked up a black Rook piece and placed it on his console. In another location, the terrorist he had given the role of R2 to launched their slash harkens into a VTOL, disabling it and causing it to fall from the air.
He then picked up a black Bishop piece and place it down as he issued his next command. "B7, use UN ordnance." And on that order, B7 fired on a tank and destroyed it.
"And N group, you'll continue your advance." This time the black Knight. The N group of the terrorists charged on a squad of four Knightmares. The two groups exchanged fire, but it ultimately resulted in the destruction of the Britannian squad, the rebels victory being signaled by four more "LOST" signals.
Agumon watched Lelouch's action with curiosity. He didn't really get why he kept messing around with those game pieces. He could tell from the way Lelouch was reacting that, whatever his plan was, it seemed to be working out. He seemed to be in a good mood at least. He still found his theatrics weird, though.
"Now then. The enemy has five options. Their move." Lelouch declared, mostly for himself. While the enemies numbers were still greater, the momentum was on his side. Keeping oneself calm and collected in the face of repeated failures and losses was not an easy task for most people. Even he had his limits before he would lose his composure. While most people would like to believe they could stay calm no matter what, it was human nature to react to whatever comes ones way. Success could bolster ones confidence, which could lead to boldness among many other emotion. And one the opposite side of that coin, failure could result in a number of reactions itself. Going from one end to the other in that spectrum was sure to elicit a strong reaction from anyone. And if his brother hadn't changed in the eight years since he last saw him, he had an idea of the reaction he was having right now.
"Fine then." Clovis was not happy. His anger had reached the boiling point. He had suffered humiliation after humiliation today. He had precious research subjects stolen, some of his absolutely most important. And he would not stand for a defeat here. These insignificant upstarts would absolutely, under no circumstances would best him. He would not accept any defeat here. "We'll be sending in Digimon."
"B-but my lord, sending them into battle openly like this is-" Bartley spoke up, warry of this idea. If word got out of them being used here, the repercussions could be dire!
"We'll worry about potential consequences later." Clovis was already making his way forward from his throne at the rear, approaching the center console to examine the map. "As long as we wipe out any witnesses, there should be no problems." He didn't now how the enemy was reading his moves so effectively, but that was going to end here. No matter how effective his enemy's strategy had been, if he did something that could not be predicted, victory should be assured!
While the enemy was spread out, the marker for the estimated area would be their first target. With standard weaponry being the most likely armaments in use here, something with thick enough armor should be more than enough to handle Knightmares. And for good measure, he'd use more than one. These pesky terrorists would rue the day that they had dared to make a fool out of him!
Leaving the room to take the necessary steps personally, he made one last declaration to his staff, making his order clear. "On my authority as Third Prince of Britainnia and Viceroy of Area 11, I, Clovis la Britannia, authorize the deployment of Special Digital Weaponry!"
Lelouch was observing the monitor, waiting for his opponent's next action. He knew his success had left his opponent's reeling. His brother was prone to reckless acts to try and recover momentum once put into a tight spot. He'd often fall for his provocations and move pieces into his traps. Or times he'd move pieces defending his King, and lose the pieces separating him from being put into Check or Mate.
One thing he found concerning though was how long it was taking his dear brother to react after his last move. It shouldn't be this quiet. Nothing had moved on his monitor, and he hadn't received any word on movements. Perhaps he had underestimated his brother. Maybe he had learned to control himself better these past eight years. Either way, it was just a matter of reacting accordingly to his next move.
"MONSTER!" A voice came through over the terrorist communicator. The voice sounded terrified.
A monster!? That could only mean one thing: A Digimon! Of course he should have expected one. How could he have been so careless? If they had already deployed them once today to search, he should have thought that he might see more.
"P5, report! What do you see?"
"It's a monster! It's big and bullets aren't working!"
It was only now that he realized he had based his assessment of Digimon off of Agumon and the other two kinds he had seen. While Agumon and the Gaossmon had been similar enough, the Geremon was as radically different as it could get. He was familiar with a Sutherland's capabilites, having done his research on them. If their weapons weren't working, what were they going to do? He needed more information, and quickly!
"Agumon! Do you know anything about it? How we can deal with it?" He had to remain calm, lest he fall into the same psychological trap he was trying to get Clovis with.
"Maybe, but not if I don't know what it is." He really wanted to help out in some way, even if it was just providing info. But he had no idea what Digimon this could be.
"Shit! There's two 'em!"
This was bad. The momentum he had gained was shifting, and if he didn't act quickly, he could lose it all. But
"I'm on my way!" A new voice from his communicator, though he recognized it immediately. It was the girl in the red Glasgow. He appreciated the initiative, but charging into the unknown like that wasn't something he wanted from her. Her value as a piece was higher than the others, the reason he had designated her Q1, the Queen piece, after all.
Still, it wasn't just her. He needed every piece he could muster in this situation. Unnecessary losses should be minimized. There was still too many enemies in his way, even after the sudden Digimon. He had to act quickly.
"If you see the enemies, will you be able to provide me information on dealing with them?"
"Definitely!" Agumon seemed serious. The look in his eye was enough to convince him. He was his only source of info on Digimon now, so he would have to trust his expertise.
Latching his harkens into the floor, he descend from the damaged building he had hidden in. As he did, he saw smoke begin to rise, and he used his sensors to pick up increased heat signatures. That would be the first place he checked.
Not far, Kallen was rushing for the same location. Tamaki had sounded terrified. She didn't know what this monster business was, but she wasn't gonna leave him to die. She also hadn't been the oy one, as several Sutherlands joined her, identifying themselves as Ohgi and the others. All were worried about their comrade.
Upon arriving, they were met with the shock of a lifetime. Tamaki hadn't overreacted like they thought. What they saw before them were...dinosaurs? There were a pair of them, two black and white dinosaurs. They walked on all-fours with a thick hide and hard shells, and what stood out the most was their massive horns on their nose. One of her comrades fired a few shots from their assault rifle, but they simply impacted against them without piercing the skin or shell. The bullets fell to the ground uselessly.
One of the dinosaurs looked to them and opened its mouth, before firing a sphere of fire their way. They all managed to avoid the sudden attack, but it exploded on impact where they had been moments before. While not huge, the explosion did carry a bit of force with it, and their Knightmares shook from the shock. Kallen decided to try and go for the eye, figuring that no matter how hard its exterior, eyes should always be a vulnerable point on any living thing. Firing her Harken at it, the creature avoided her strike. The creature definitely took not of her and turned its attention to her. She could already tell what was coming next, and was already moving away before the next shot was fired.
"I don't know what the hell is goin on, but we've gotta do something about these things!" she declared as she moved around the creature. Her Glasgow's speed should be superior, right? However, she was proved wrong as it charged at her, and she just barely avoided it ramming into her.
"Watch out, Kallen!" Ohgi said as he fired on the one going for her. Like before, the shots had little effect.
From a distance, Lelouch watched the battle unfold, taking notes of what was going on. Like the Gaossmon before, they seems to have an attachment for command. There was a camera on it as well. Both were also hardly feral beasts, taking attacks where they had little to fear, but carefully protecting their vitals, like their eyes.
"Those things are Monochromon." Agumon informed him. "Their skin and shells are super hard!" That much information was fairly obvious.
An idea forming, he took the terrorist communicator once more. "Can you hear me, Q1?"
"Yeah. What the hell are these things!?" She replied quickly.
"It will take too long to explain, but they're called Digimon. Britannia is using them as weapons."
"Digimon?" Kallen repeated. Why did that seem to ring a bell? Had she heard that somewhere before? She didn't really have the time to dwell on it given the circumstances. She couldn't believe that Britannia had something like these up their sleeves. "So what do we do about them?"
"I've encountered a situation like this before. They were forced against their will by a device strapped to them. You and the others, draw their attention for now, I'm going to take aim at the device."
"Sounds like a plan." And do so they did. While they now knew the creatures were faster than they seemed, they weren't impossible to avoid, and so her Glasgow and the Sutherlands circled around them, taking shots. They kept close attention on them, and made sure not to get to close to one another and become tempting targets. One in particular seemed focused on Kallen. Perhaps because her machine was missing an arm, or maybe because she had no weapons of her own. Either way, it kept its focus on her and tried for her when it could. But that focus also made it a better target, its movements more predictable.
After what felt like far too long, a shot struck the device attached around it, destroying the device, which exploded. "Thats one dow-" The Monochromon however did not seem to stop, firing another fireball at Kallen, who thankfully managed to dodge it. "But why!?" The Gaossmon put up no further problems, going their own way. They had been forced against their own wills to act and thus only really saw the ones causing them problems as their enemies.
"Does this mean...?" It was beginng to set in exactly why this time might be different.
"Can you hear me, terrorist scum?" A voice came from the attachment on the other Monochromon, broadcasting for all to hear. He recognized the voice immediately. It was Prince Clovis, clearly intending to gloat. "Your plan there was not a bad one. Indeed, we do have some problem Digimon that need coercion. But these Monochromon have no need for such a thing. They are entirely loyal to me, Clovis la Britannia, and carry out any commands I give them! And there orders are to eliminate you terrorists!"
"Damn, I miscalculated once more." He had assumed that this situation was one like the Gaossmon. Once again, he had based his assumptions only on the little experience he had. In retrospect, he should have at least considered the possibility of willingness on the Digimon's part. Taking the risk with the Gaossmon, fielding something you can't fully control was one thing, but something as tough as these Monochromon was an entirely different matter. Conventional weapons were seemingly useless on them. No matter how powerful they might be, they would be useless as a weapon if they couldn't be controlled.
"Well, that was a bust. Now what?" Tamaki, or as Lelouch knew him, P5, remarked.
The situation was getting worse every minute. He had hoped to end the conflict with these quickly, but that was looking to be an impossibility. And worse for him, the other Monochromon had decided to make him its target and began to charge towards him. Lelouch made to escape, but was stopped as a fireball from the other exploded behind him, preventing escape that way. He managed to dodge to the side to avoid behind rammed into, and the beast knocked down the wall next to him. He was out of options. He had no idea how to deal with these juggernauts, and escape was becoming an impossibility.
Suddenly, Agumon hit the lever to open the cockpit, and already moved to jump out the back as soon as it opened. Lelouch stopped it before his seat was exposed for others to see. Agumon perched atop Lelouch's Sutherland and wasted no time in shooting a fireball at the Monochromon. "Baby Flame!" The Fireball struck the creature's hide. Though it seemed to leave a light singe mark in the spot it struck, like the bullets, it didn't seem to inflict much damage if any at all.
For her own part, Kallen hesitated at the sight of Agumon. "Why... Why do I feel like I've seen that thing before...?" She hadn't ever seen it before today, she was certain! But looking at the tiny black dinosaur, she felt like she should know what it was. She figured it had to at least be another one of those Digimon things, which might explain how the person helping them knew what they were.
As the thing got closer, Agumon lept off of Lelouch's Sutherland and onto the Monochromon. It tried to shake him off, but the tiny creature held on as tight as he could. Gripping to the side, he had a clear shot at his target and took it. "Baby Flame!" And the fireball struck its intended target; The Monochromon's eye. It let out a roar of pain. Agumon was so pleased with himself, he was unprepared for what came next.
The beast then hit its side into a nearby building. It purposely kept its momentum low so as to not knock down its wall. Instead, it wanted to apply force to Agumon, who screamed in pain as he felt himself being crushed between the concrete and the Monochromon. It released its grip, and fell to the ground against and leaned against the building.
Lelouch could hear a noise from his side, his Digivice and he glanced reflexively to see its screen had lit up once more. "Man, I'm so lame..." Agumon's voice came through clearly to him. Ordinarily, he would pay more attention to the convenience of the device also functioning as a communicator between him and Agumon.
"Hey, what did you think you were doing?" He kept his tone down, but he sounded more concerned than he expected. He was surprised, but he cared more about the creature's safety than he expected.
"I... just wanted to help out..." From his position, he saw Agumon look over to him weakly. He tried to smile, but it was clear to any that it was in pain.
"You idiot! Get out of there!" He couldn't believe what he was about to do, putting his life on the line for a creature he had only known for less than a day. But the Digimon had been willing to put his own life on the line for him. He should be concerned with his own self-perseveration, to get out of this situation. He needed to get back to Nunnally, and he wanted to accomplish his goals. But in this moment, he couldn't bring himself to.
He fired at the Monochromon once more, just barely grazing its eyes. It let out a roar once more, and then fired a ball of flame towards Lelouch. Though he avoided it, one of his legs were destroyed in the process. He was trapped, and his back literally to a wall. He watched as the Monochromon walked towards him.
"Hey, I'm coming to get you out of there!" Kallen called out to him, driving her Glasgow towards him. She knew he couldn't escape on his own. While things had taken a bad turn here, she still owed him for saving her earlier. Plus, he had managed a lot in the fight earlier. It would be a shame to let all that go to waste and let him die after all the help he had given them.
But she wasn't the only one coming to Lelouch's aid. Agumon had run over to him, and stood between the disabled Knightmare and the approaching Monochromon. He raised his arms defiantly. "You're... not getting past me... no matter what..." The Monochromon rose to the challenge though, raising its foot above him, looking to end this once and for all. With all its strength, it went to slam its foot down on the small dinosaur and crush Agumon beneath its foot.
What happened next was something nobody could have predicted, not Lelouch or the others with the lacking knowledge of Digimon, and not even Clovis and his staff. As Agumon's tiny body was about to be crushed, flattened beneath the Monochromon's feet, there was suddenly a bright glow. The dinosaur's foot was lifted up as the form of Agumon rapidly grew in size. His entire body seemed to be glowing, looking as if he was now made of pure energy.
"Agumon... EVOLUTION!"
A stripe pattern appeared along his back, jaw and even shoulders and legs. Then, from the tip of his nose, a sing horn protruded out, followed by two more on either side of his head. His arms then shifted from being the thick ones they were two a more slender shape while his hands shifted, losing one finger but with a more defined claw shape, which even as he transformed, he used to push the Monochromon onto its back. Next were his legs, which grew longer and became more muscular while the short and almost stubby tail grew out to much longer length.
"GREYMON!" he bellowed, his voice having noticeably deepened. The light that engulfed his body dissipated, revealing his new form. His skin had gone from black to blue with black stripes. His head had a bone-like helmet covering the entire top half above his jaw, and his once green eyes now a piercing gold. In terms of size, he had gone from being much shorter than Lelouch to now standing at a height of just a bit taller than a Sutherland.
"You guys." he spoke out, looking over to Lelouch and then then the others, then back to the enemy. "You just leave this TO ME!" He charged the downed Monochromon before it could get up, using his impressive new size and strength to push back the Digimon into its brethren. The other Monochromon tried to push back once it got over its sudden shock of being attacked like this, but even planting its feet and attempting to push back, it proved to have less strength than Greymon. Eventually, he pushed him back and knocked it off its feet briefly.
"Your shells are hard, right?" He knew he had to use this opening while he had it. Greymon then lifted up one of the Monochromon over its head. Its struggled but Greymon made sure its limbs could reach him to stop him. "So what happens if I smash them together!" With all the force he could muster, he slammed the shell of one onto the other and they both roared out in pain. There seemed to be cracks in the spots he hit them against one another,.
It was at that moment that a pair of enemy Sutherlands showed up to investigate the explosions they had seen and heard, and saw Greymon and too aim, He avoided most shots, but one struck his shoulder. Though it didn't cause much damage, he did wnce in pain as it struck him. He saw it stuck into his shoulder, slightly piercing his skin. He realized his new form was tough and durable, but nowhere near as much as the Monochromon. He could probably take a few shots without issue, but couldn't
Lowering his head to use his helmet as a shield, he flicked the bullet out of his shoulder before running at the enemy. While his skin was one thing, his bone-like helmet was harder and the bullets that struck it bounced off uselessly. Getting in close much faster than they had predicted, Greymon grabbed one Sutherland's arm and effortlessly tore it off. He then followed it up by striking the other with his tail, totaling the leg. While that pilot managed to eject, the other tried to shot with its remaining arm, and Greymon used his impressive strength to push it back with ease and knock it off balance.
It was then that he was struck with a fireball, and grunted in pain at that impact. Looking back, one of the Monochromon had gotten back on its feet and looked at him defiantly. It was not about to go down without a fight. Charging at him, Greymon turned to face him. While clashing with him in a test of his newfound strength seemed appealing, there was something else that he could do now that he wanted to test out. And at the speed it was coming at him, the Monochromon probably wouldn't be able to change course and avoid him.
Opening his mouth, he prepared to shoot one of the fireballs he was accustomed to in his previous form. But This one was no longer a Baby Flame, but far stronger. "MEGA FLAME!" he declared, and his mighty fireball fired from his mouth and hit the Monochromon dead on in the face. It stopped its charge and stumbled to the ground and slid from his momentum. Placing his foot on the Monochromon triumphantly, he saw the device on the Monochromon and decided to crush it, even if it didn't really matter.
One might expect in this situation for Clovis to be be angry. But that was far from the case right now. Because he had just witnessed something wonderful.
"I want that enemy Digimon captured! Alive!" Clovis ordered.
In all of his time working with Digimon, Evolution was not something he had ever seen with his own eyes. He knew from what he had been told that Evolution was something that they could apparently do, but it wasn't something that he had ever seen nor replicate. Evolving could transition a Digimon from one stage to another, and often would come with a dramatic increase in power. Case in point, that tiny black dinosaur which couldn't stand up to his Monochromon had grown tremendously and his strength with it.
Whatever it was that caused here, he absolutely had to know! Just as much as that girl was, this was too important of a potential research to pass up. If he could discover the secrets of the Evolution process and replicate it... The possibilities were endless! Even if had to break it down and examine its data byte by byte, he would find out how to do it!
"Reinforce the Monochromon with some of the Knightmares guarding me, send in Bertz Squad and the remaining forces on standby! Surround them"
"B-but My Lord! Not every pilot here has the clearance for D-type knowledge!" Bartley protested. This was going too far! His liege was making such reckless decisions that could come back to. Even being a Prince and child of the Emperor could only protect him so much, especially should the Emperor himself get involved. Emperor Charles zi Britannia was known in some circles with the privilege of knowledge of some history of the inner circle of the Imperial Family's court, to show no mercy to even his own children should they anger him. He could think of one individual in particular who had incurred a particularly harsh punishment from him. And he did not want Prince Clovis to suffer under the Emperor's ire.
"My Lord, but what about the terrorists?" Another staff officer asked, not losing sight of the original goal.
"Deal with them at the same time if they have to! We can't let this chance pass us by!"
For his part, Lelouch watched as his monitor started to display something. He watched as Knightmare IFFs began to move once again. It seemed that the figt here had attracted the attention once more. Whatever the reason he could speculate, things were back on track. "Greymon, lend me a hand." he said into his Digivice.
"You got it." He walked over to the Sutherland and picked it up.
"Q1 and the rest of you, the enemy is sending in a large force as we speak. Do you have an area map?"
"Yeah, but it has no current landmarks."
"Thats fine. We're moving onto the next phase. Its time for mission number 3."
When the Sutherlands arrived, they found the two Monochromon, both on their backs with their horns embedded into the ground and locking them in place. While many were shocked by the sight of the Digimon, they didn't see any terrorists like they had expected. Indeed, Clovis was also puzzled when they radioed back and told him what they saw and more importantly, what they didn't.
Indeed, the terrorists were now underground, moving beneath their feet. Lelouch and Greymon with them. With another order from him, Kallen fired her Harken into the ceiling of the tunnel, weakening the ground and causing it to collapse. They all made their way quickly to escape, but those above were not so lucky. The ground beneath the soldiers and the Monochromon gave way and they sunk into the ground, many crushed.
At the sight of this, the tide had shifted back into his favor. Lelouch didn't even bother to suppress a laugh at the sight of countless "LOST" signals on his monitor. "And thats Check, dear brother!" His plan, despite some slight hiccups, worked perfectly! Even with the unexpected, he still came out on top in the end! "I can do it. I can! I can defeate Britannia!"
It seemed Geass wasn't the only useful thing he acquired today. His partner, Greymon as he was called now, was every bit as useful. With power like this, even if they threw more Digimon at him, nothing would stand in his way!
And on the G-1, Clovis backed up slowly, horrified by this turn of events. He had become blinded by the treasure before him, and had committed a sizable force to the task and lost it all. All those "LOST" signals appearing at the same time drove home how grave of a blunder he had just committed. He had walked into a trap, and paid the price.
It was apparent now that the enemy commander was a force to be reckoned with. He had read him like book. Predicted and countered his every plan. Even when he had sent in two Digimon and briefly regained control of the situation, he lost it when the enemy deployed a Digimon of their own. One with the ability to Evolve right before their eyes! His only advantage might actually be gone. Just who the hell was he up against!?
Given the resources he had, he had two cards left to play. One, he was unsure about using in this situation. Hesitant to lose it, should he bested once more. But the other...
"LLOYD!"
"Yes, your highness!" The scientist said, excited for what was sure to come. He had been waiting for this moment!
"Can it win? Can your toy beat them?"
"Toy? Now thats just rude." He had a smug expression on his face. He was confident that his creation could get results, and he wanted it to be reffered to properly. "My lord, please be so kind to call it by its name; Lancelot."
Suzaku was ready. He had suited up some time ago, and had been reading through the manual he had been given. He had a good idea of what he was getting into here. And part of him was excited to be able to pilot something like this. He was also hoping to put a stop to the fighting. Not privy the details of the incident, and he had many questions. But he was certain, if he could put a stop to the fighting, then that could help Lelouch get away.
He had heard the terrorist had released the poison gas. He wasn't sure what to believe there. The capsule he had seen hadn't had any poison gas, so that was fishy on its own. While he couldn't be sure that they didn't actually have another capsule that had poison gas, he couldn't get out of his mind why the lie. Putting that out of his head for now though, he focused on the task at hand.
"Lancelot." he said as he used his controls to spread Lancelot's legs apart, then move its hands appropriately. "Activate ME Boost!" With his machine's Yggdrasil drive spinning at full power, his Knightmare sped out of the launch at full speed.
He had to admit, the feeling of piloting this far exceeded anything a simulator could have prepared him for. And the rush he felt right now was something else! And it handled way better than he could have hoped for. Its performance might seem too much for some, but it was perfectly responsive to his actions. At the speed he was going, he could end this quickly with Lancelot's power!
And on that, he saw the first enemy. A Sutherland that didn't register with his IFF, just as he had been informed. With his machine's speed and his expert handling, he disabled it in a swift motion and forced its pilot to eject to safety. He was surprised by how smoothly that was, responding perfectly to his will. It was almost as if the machine had been made just for him.
Next, several more enemies appeared in his path, this time managing to fire at him. Seeing this as the perfect opportunity to try out the defenses, he activated the Blaze Luminous, a revolutionary new technology that provide a barrier that could defect anything! And sure enough, their bullets bounced off harmlessly. Firing his slash harkens next, he disabled their machines one by one.
Following that, even more Sutherlands appeared and took aim at him, but he weaved effortlessly through their fire. One after another, he disabled each one, taking out their heads and arms and forcing their pilots to eject
"Mega Flame!" a voice roared out and he avoided a massive fireball.
"What the hell!?" he turned to the source and saw...a dinosaur!? Sure enough, a blue dinosaur with a bone-like helmet was facing him down now. It then charged at him, its head lowered with its horns out. He evaded the attack, and swiped at its side with his slash harken extended out. Her grunted in pain, but it wasn't something he couldn't handle. He tried to grab him, but Lancelot's speed and agility proved superior. Suzaku knew if that thing grabbed him, it was probably all over for him.
Leaping over a tail swipe, he used his forearm mounted Slash Harkens to swing and dodge in midair. Firing his hip mounted ones, he struck into the beast and they seemed to embed into his skin. Grunting in pain, the dinosaur seemed to grin. Instinctively sensing something bad, he released them from their hold and restracted them, just in time to avoid the dinosaur grabbing the wires. He could tell, this thing was no feral beast, so he had to be careful or this thing would end him in a single strike.
"This guys pretty tough." the dinosaur spoke out. "Hes really fast and I can't hit him." It sounded kind of like he was talking to someone, but Suzaku couldn't see anyone around. "Hm? You sure about that?"
At that moment, two more Sutherlands, enemies from the looks of it, came at him from behind. Turning around to use his Blaze Luminous to black, he noticed that the dinosaur was using this opportunity to retreat. "Is it... working with the terrorists?" He considered pursuing, but something in the back of his mind said not to. Truthfully, part of him didn't want to fight it, he realized.
"Hes not following me." Greymon said back over his Digivice.
"Good. As troublesome as that thing is, I need you on standby right now. Get as close to the Checkpoint as you can without being seen." Lelouch said, the placing his Digivice into his new pocket. He wasn't going to be careless. Twice now, the battle had surprised him, and he was not going to be caught off guard a third time. As long as the terrorists kept that Knightmare busy at this most crucial juncture, all should be fine. But it was best to have some insurance should his next move go south.
This had been valuable experience for him all around though. The reality of the battlefield was something he had needed to experience firsthand. Unlike a game, the unpredictability and volatility were on a whole different level. In Chess, all pieces were on the board from the start and in plain sight for all to see. But on the battlefield, surprises could be moments away and new pieces could enter into the picture at any point. He would do well to remember these lessons going forward, because there wasn't a chance that he would stop here.
He had also acquired some invaluable tools today. The first was obviously the Geass, the thing that had made all of this possible. The second was his Digimon partner, with Greymon's overwhelming strength. And the third was perhaps these terrorists, and though rough around the edges, could prove useful going forward. Particularly, Q1 seemed to have the most potential. To be able to fight in an inferior machine with one arm and survive this long was something to take note of. He would have to see what she could do going forward, as there was always a need to have strong pieces up his sleeve.
Thanks to his efforts, he had acquired the attire of a soldier, and was approaching the G-1. Some surprises here and there in order to get to this point, and not everything had gone perfectly, but he was about to reach his main objective. And all according to his plan, there were barely any guards.
One of the few soldiers there tried to stop him and get his ID, but with a quick use of his Geass, the man let him pass with no issues. Really, this thing truly was magnificent. Its uses really were endless.
"It's time I put an end to our little game. This should be Checkmate, Clovis."
Kallen watched as Ohgi's Knightmare was disabled, and he ejected to safety. Considering how much losses they were suffering, she was shocked by the fact that nobody was dying. It was almost as if their opponent was deliberately avoiding going for kills. But that didn't make sense for a Britannian pilot.
Still, she figured she had to do something. She wasn't sure why the dinosaur, Greymon, had retreated, but things weren't looking good now. The numbers of enemies had been greatly reduced, but the foe before them now seemed just as insurmountable as those Digimon enemies before. She tried reaching the voice, asking for any strategy, but he hadn't replied in a while. She wondered if he had been taken out.
Seeing an opening as the white Knightmare forced another to eject, she charged in as fast as her machine could. She tried to strike it with her sole arm, but it caught her fist and then the Slash Harken she fired as a follow-up. Grasping it in its hand, her remaining weapon was destroyed and her last arm shortly after. She was now completely disarmed, in the figurative and literal sense.
This white Knightmare was probably even more terrifying an enemy than the Digimon. While those dinosaurs had frightened defense and power, she hadn't felt as helpless against them as she did now. It hadn't even struggled against her, the difference in performance between her Glasgow and it was like a vast canyon.
Just as it looked ready to finish her off, a very surprising announcement was broadcast for all to hear.
"Attention all forces! Cease fire at once!" a voice said over speakers from the Britannian G-1. A voice than was easily recognized as that of Prince Clovis himself. This surprised many, both military and terrorist alike. "I Clovis, Third Prince of Britannia, and royal viceroy of Area 11, hereby command you! All forces are ordered to cease fire at once! You will also cease destruction on any buildings or property! All casualties, whether Britannian or Eleven, shall be treated equally and without prejudice! In the name of Clovis la Britannia, you are herby ordered! Cease fire at once! I shall allow no further fighting!"
Kallen blinked in utter disbelief. She was perplexed by this sudden turn of events. She had no idea how it was done, but here it was playing out before her. The white Knightmare ceased it's attack and backed off of her. Not that she could do anything to stop it in her sorry state but watch it leave.
She was certain, this had to be the work of the mystery voice! But how? How did he get the Britannians to declare a ceasefire?
On the G-1, Clovis sat on the bridge in his command throne, the lights turned off. He didn't know how, he had gotten all of his staff to leave, including Bartley. It was just him and this man with his gun trained on him.
"Are you satisfied?" he said with a scowl. Though he was in a tough spot, he wasn't going to cower before this scoundrel.
"Quite." Lelouch had to admire his handiwork. For someone to be in this position, it should be impossible. But nothing was impossible for him now. He truly felt like he could achieve anything!
"So, what do you want do you plan to do now?" He remained still but watch his captor carefully.
"Good question." He had an idea of what he planned to do next. His Geass would let him command his brother, and he planned to interrogate him about a question that had burned in the back of his mind the last eight years; What did he know about his mother's death?
Eight years ago on that very days that his seemingly perfect world collapsed in on itself. The day his mother was killed, and in the tragedy, his sister lost her sight and the use of her legs. It was claimed to be the work of terrorists, but he never believed it. The grounds belonging to the Imperial Family were some of the most secure in the country, if not the whole world. For the perpetrators to not only get in to carry out the act, but to escape without a trace reeked of being an inside job. Someone was responsible, and he would find them and make them pay!
Clovis was to be but a first step in solving that mystery. Even if he knew nothing, he could hopefully point him in the direction of someone who might know something. Eight years was a long time, after all. Whispers and rumors could have passed throughout the Court. People could also develop their own theories or suspicions. And in moments, he would find out whatever Clovis knew on the matter. His plan settled, he reached up to remove his helmet.
As soon as he saw this, Clovis seized the opening and reached quickly into his coat. Lelouch stopped his action, expecting a gun and prepared to fire but hesitated when instead of a firearm, he held out a rectangular device. It seemed to have a lense facing him. Was it a camera? Or something far worse...
In these short moments of hesitation, mere seconds that felt like an eternity. Lelouch went to squeeze the trigger, but it was far too late. Clovis simply spoke one word.
"Realize!"
Greymon cautiously approached the place serving as the enemy's base of operations. He was big and stood out, so he didn't want to blow things for Lelouch, especially if his hunch was right.
As he got closer, he saw as the bridge burst open to reveal a large shape! Not needing to be told twice, he charged in just in time to see someone falling from where the bridge was. Taking a chance and grabbing them, he saw it was a soldier.
Before he could decide what to do with him, their soldier spoke up and produced a Digivice. "This is exactly why I told you to standby!" Lelouch said.
Turning back to see the the form that stood atop the G-1, it was a large red body, probably the same height as him. It was another dinosaur, similar in shape to him with green spikes going down from its head down his back along its spine. He knew what Digimon this was. "Thats a Tyranomon."
"Oh, so you can speak. That's a rarity from the Digimon I've seen in the past." He recognized the voice from earlier, though it was Greymon's first time seeing him for himself. He was being held in Tyranomon's hands. "Tyranomon is the finest Digimon in my collection. My strongest warrior."
"The conditions have changed." Lelouch said into his Digivice so only Greymon could hear him. "Retreat is the only option left."
Greymon wondered how that was going to be possible, but didn't voice his question. He could pick up on Lelouch's intent to keep their plans from the enemy.
"Just follow the plan I give you." He answered his unspoken question. Greymon nodded.
The stare down between Greymon and Tyranomon continued for a bit longer before Tyranomon acted. It was starting to feel like a cliche to Lelouch at this point as Tyranomon breathed fire towards Greymon. Honestly, this latest situation felt like those old movies he used to watch with Suzaku when they were children. Kaiju, they had been called, and often times looked a bit like dinosaurs, sometime able to breat flames or something that at least looked similar. Greymon avoided the fire and struck at the remains of the G-1. This caused Tyranomon to lose its balance and topple over, though it made sure Clovis didn't fall from its palm.
While it still was recovering its footing, Greymon charged at it, and attempted to strike Tyranomon with its own free hand. The red dinosaur caught the hard of the blue one and they briefly grappled. Seeing his opening here, Lelouch took aim with his firearm, aiming for Clovis. He took a shot he thought he had, but with both Greymon and Tyranomon wrestling for supremacy, their hands were constantly moving around. The bullet just missed Clovis's shoulder.
Lelouch got a good look at the expression on his brother's face. He was panicking, clearly not used to being on the frontline like this. He was terrified that he could die at any moment. If Lelouch's calculations were right, he would prioritize self preservation.
At that moment, several Sutherlands arrived, clearly here to investigate the sudden chaos at the G-1. However, this seemingly bad situation turned into surprisingly fortunate turn of events. "Unhand Prince Clovis, you beast!" The voice of one pilot announced through their external speakers as he fired at Tyranomon.
"Thats our cue." Not needing to be told anything else, Greymon turned to run away. As he did, he also saw another Knightmare approaching, the familiar white knight. Thankfully, it took note of the other skirmish to join in. "Make sure it's clear you're leaving Shinjuku. It would be a waste of effort if they thought it best to continue searching here for us."
In this last exchange, he had learned another valuable piece of information. It seemed not every soldier within the military was aware of Digimon. He could only speculate on the reason why, but it was definitely something he should know going forward.
As for the battle today though, while he couldn't call it a loss,, it certainly didn't feel like a win. At the very least, he hadn't expended any if his own resources to get here. He supposed that was definitely a positive to take away from this. His means had only grown exponentially today! Though speaking of growing, he had yet to figure out what to do about Greymon. His size was one of his strengths in battle, but it would be a massive undertaking to conceal him long term. Getting out of Shinjuku with him would be a challenge. He briefly wondered if he could use his Digivice like Clovis's on device a store him inside...
It was he contemplated trying to figure that out that he suddenly found himself descending rapidly. He looked down to see Greymon was glowing and in moments had become Agumon once more.
"How did you...?" No, on second thought he didn't want to deal with whatever his response was. He would just accept the positive outcome and worry about the reason later. "Just follow me."
Meanwhile, atop the tower of Shinjuku's signature sight, the former Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, a lone figure sat within the top floor, having watched the events below unfold. His body was obscured by shadows, made harder to see by the setting sun. He was tall though, bigger than a Knightmare Frame.
He chuckled to himself at the end of what he had witnessed. "Such an interesting turn of events. I never would have expected this outcome."
Yes, it was worth it to be here. To witness what he had seen. And he wanted to see what might be born from this event. He had even considered intervening, but ultimately decided against it. If he started bailing him out now, the boy might make a habit out of it.
"The return of you Chosen Children will certainly have an impact on things to come. I hope you don't let me down."
He then looked down at a small companion, miniscule in comparison to himself, even smaller than the average human. "We should watch how things unfold from here."
"What about the others? Only the Agumon appears to have come over to this world." The voice of this one was clearly that of a female.
"You needn't worry. The Witch seems to have reawakened all of the sleeping Digivices with this first one. While it might take time, all of them will beckon the Digimon they are connected to to come to this world."
This was the day. The day that a Demon had been born into this world, brought to life by that Witch. It was a day that he had longed for, that the Chosen Children, though he could hardly call them children now, would return. From that moment that moment seven years ago, where destiny called for them. Their actions from here on out would determine the course of the world and its future.
And he would make sure it went the way he wanted. He had waited a very long time for this, and he wasn't about to let this opportunity go to waste.
And thats chapter three down. I'm shocked I finished this so quickly, but perhaps that's because this and last were supposed to be one chapter originally, so the ideas and plan was still fresh in my mind. This ended up being longer than I wanted, but there was no way I was going to take 4 chapters just to get through Shinjuku. No matter the length, I was ending it here.
And we've got quite a deviation in sparring Clovis. When I decided to write this, I had always planned to spare him here. I wanted to do something different here. From the start I had the idea of Clovis being the first antagonist, and that wasn't going to end in Shinjuku. Where this goes from here, I hope I manage to use him in an interesting way.
