When the morning arrived, Hawkes arrived shortly after Mac and Stella had just finished up putting away the dishes from the night prior and having a coffee. "Where's Rebecca? No offence, she's normally up and about. I see her catching the bus for work at this hour," Hawkes began and Mac looked at him. "Her car is having troubles so she takes the bus when she can. Local gossip knowledge of the building. There's a gossip per floor and luckily I'm the only one on my floor so I hear everyone else's."
"What's the issue with her car?" Stella was concerned as well now that they knew whenever Rebecca drove her car, she was driving a vehicle that wasn't as safe as it could be. Hawkes shrugged and she looked at the doctor who looked honest.
"She keeps to herself. She does things in the community, but her problems? Unless you see them or hear them, you'd think she has the perfect little life," he explained and Mac frowned knowing he now wanted to get the truth from her about the car and what was happening to it. "She's a good actress. We see more of the real her than the people who live in our building do." Mac looked at him and he nodded at the man. "That smile she wears? The one we see when she's walking in? It's the fake one. When she hears one of us, if you're able to see her face, you should watch it. She lets out a breath before the smile she wants to give comes free. Her fake ones are big and full of energy. The real ones? Small and subtle."
"You do realize you aren't one of the building gossips right?" Hawkes chuckled as he saw Rebecca walking out and then he stepped back in shock at her outfit. "You do forget I was a student at one point and dressed less than professional," she reminded.
"Never thought I'd see the day I'd actually see you in ripped jeans and a shirt that almost borders offensive," Mac admitted. She wasn't wearing a truly offensive top, but based on work dress code, there was to be nothing that exposed lots of skin. She was in a one shoulder top that the neck scooped low and almost revealed more than her chest. Mac and Stella had always appreciated they never had to get on Rebecca about her clothes as she was the youngest when it came to work.
"This should certainly help when Flack takes you into town. Please get a haircut," Mac begged as he looked at it. "No offence I can't stop staring at it every time you turn around," he responded. She nodded and he rolled his eyes at her.
"I had a reason to botch the bleach job," she responded and Mac chuckled at that. He then heard movement and nodded at Rebecca as he could see people were opening their shades and as Stella went to walk over to her, Rebecca walked away and made sure to slam her door.
"It's going to be hard. One minute we're colleagues and the next we're a fake little family that has issues," Stella answered looking at Mac. He nodded knowing what Stella was getting at with the statement. Before the mission, Stella and Mac were able to talk to Rebecca freely and tried to protect her. Now they had to protect her but she couldn't interact with them the way she knew how. Hawkes walked after Rebecca after a nod from Mac and as he knocked she opened the door.
"Hey," he greeted and he showed her makeup kits. "We have to make you look suicidal before you go anywhere."
"Nothing up on the neck or where it could get wet." He nodded knowing why she was stating that. She didn't want it wearing out somewhere and someone catching on so he pointed to one of the ripped sections of the jean that looked big enough to hold a cut and she looked at him. He then looked at the rips in the shirt and then tapped a spot that was where her elbow poked out and she nodded a little quicker. He began working and as Mac walked in to see the progress, he noted 4 scars on her arms each.
"Luckily I'm only going for a cut," she responded.
"I warned Flack and he agreed to make sure they cut your hair dry. No spraying it or anything. So if you can make one here," Mac began touching a spot on her neck. "Because from what you said they have, they'll think she was stopped by me," he informed and Hawkes nodded. As he made the fake cut, Hawkes noticed a couple times he had to pause as her neck tensed up.
"What's with the tensing? It's just makeup." Hawkes never saw Rebecca tense as much and she just casually shrugged before returning to her seated position where she had to work on keeping still. She never wanted anyone to see her weaker sides.
"Mac," Stella called out and he walked to see her looking at a file. "I looked at Rebecca Manx's records and it seems we don't know everything. I've requested records from the hospital in South Carolina as she moved to New York from there. I also am trying to access her current medical records from the New York Hospital that all our employees go to as we have health coverage there." Mac looked at her confused before he saw her pull it up. "This popped up in a police record. Rebecca's father was a Marine. He saved her from her mother and sent her to live with her aunt. Her mother was a convicted felon and was charged with child abuse. Rebecca moved back in with her mom in her early teens. Her father died in 2001," she began. Mac looked at her concerned and she nodded pulling up the death certificate. "September 11, 2001. He was confirmed to have been in the first tower that went down. Rebecca, well she was in school. But she heard about it from," she began reading the report before covering her mouth. "From you." Mac looked at the report and then saw the picture and the face came back to him.
*Flashback*
"Is there any signs of any kids?" Mac had just arrived to look for Claire, but he wanted to also protect the most vulnerable. He was about to say more before he saw a kid running towards the building and he ran after her and grabbed her. "You can't go in there," he warned and pulled her away since he saw the tower was still falling.
"My dad's still inside," the little girl snapped in a panic to try and escape Mac's grasp.
"Your dad would have passed. A plane struck the side," he calmly explained and then helped her duck for cover from another massive piece of the tower coming down and it's after effects.
*End Flashback*
"Seems Rebecca has her own 9/11 demons," Stella began and Mac looked at the records shocked before he saw Rebecca walking out and they pretended they didn't see anything. As Rebecca was ready there was a knock on the door and she opened it to see Flack there.
"Are you ready to go Rebecca?" She glared at him and Flack chuckled knowing she was just acting.
"I'd rather go by myself," she retorted. Stella knew Mac was about to start his role as well. So he waited as Mac walked over and handed Flack a card and he nodded knowing that it was a credit card under Rebecca's new ID.
"I know you would, but you were declared incompetent 5 years ago. I wish you could be declared competent again but until then I will take care of you," Mac answered as he looked to Flack. "She should be behaved. She got a decent night sleep."
"Yeah until you decide to give me up, just like my aunt," she muttered. Mac knew to keep quiet as Flack and her walked out to go get things done. Mac knew that she was just frustrated at the moment. As she closed the door, he knew she was getting frustrated by the act. It was a tough one to pull off, but she also seemed to be taking it with grace. She knew she had to be an incompetent, but that wasn't easy when you were so used to being someone like Detective Rebecca Manx.
"Well she has her first appointment with that creep today. Hopefully she can get in very easily." Mac looked at Stella and chuckled at that. "What? You make it sound like Rebecca's just a little demon child of the lab," she warned.
"She is a little demon. She just chooses who to be a little demon around," Mac answered as he grabbed a picture that they took at a party. Stella and Mac had managed to get one picture with just her and saw her small little smile. "I think in a way, it's a good thing she agreed to do this. Now we can see what demons potentially haunt her."
Meanwhile, Flack and Rebecca were driving downtown. "So you were a brat for your dad last night huh?" She glared at him through the rearview mirror and he chuckled. "You do realize that you're basically a little sister of mine through this right? Mac looks out for me and Danny as his sons making you a part of our family," he warned. She bit her lip and slammed her head back. When he pulled into the parking lot he walked over to Rebecca and saw her face looked stressed out. "Come on Becka," he cajoled and she slapped him for that. "Oh not allowed huh?" She shook her head and he helped her out.
"This thing is just," she began shaking her hands and he nodded knowing what she was trying to say without blowing her cover. She said thing in reference to Mac's hover parent nature, though he knew it was the mission in general. She was used to being independent, proving her knowledge. Now she had to pretend to be incompetent and more childish. Flack had even seen Rebecca's fake file and it stated she was so easily agitated that some people had just given in to keep her calm.
As they walked in, Mac's normal hairdresser saw them. "This must be little Rebecca." Rebecca instantly went behind Flack and he chuckled remembering that Mac and Hawkes made her act like she was shy. Anyone who knew Detective Rebecca Manx knew that was a load of bullshit. She did not care who you were. She would tell you exactly what she thought of you. Except for Mac and Stella. The whole team noted that even when she wanted to scream but yet she took it well because they were okay with teaching her what happened and how she can avoid the messes in the future.
"It is. Mac wanted to bring her but we got a lead from Detective Manx and he was called to the lab, so I got the pleasure of sticking around her for the day," he responded. The stylist then took them to her seat and Flack knew Rebecca's style he googled a picture so they didn't blow Rebecca's cover. As he watched her, he noticed every time the woman got near her neck she gripped the chair like a vice. When they finished the cut, Flack and her returned to the car and just stood outside it.
"What's with the neck grab?"
"I just don't like people near my throat," she answered. Flack nodded and as they drove by the lab, he noted she almost instinctively grabbed the handle. "So can't wait for this to be over with," she muttered. He chuckled at that before they arrived back at Mac's apartment.
"Now once you're in there I expect you to listen to your dad," he warned her and she stuck her tongue out before following. As they walked inside, Mac looked over her hair and smiled in relief. "Your favorite asked how she got the bleach there."
"And?"
"Kind of got snappy. Asked her how the hell she thought it got there," Rebecca admitted and Mac mentally snickered. He was trying not to laugh as he knew neighbors were within hearing range, but he couldn't help it somewhat.
"What happened to some respect outside of this house?"
"Regardless, I have to get back to work. I warned her to behave for the rest of the day," Flack assured and he messed Rebecca's hair and then left before Rebecca quickly shut the door and put a finger up and went to her room and hid her face. Mac followed knowing what she was going through. She knew at least she got to do the undercover with her team, but it didn't change it was hard not to mess with them like she usually did, give them data that she normally did or anything.
"You'll get through this. Besides you're getting hours onto your Masters Degree," he answered and she glanced at him. "Any time you're out in public it's hours to your Masters Degree or any time that someone's over," he assured.
"That's not the team," she reminded and he nodded at that. She sat up and fixed her bangs after 10 different pulls. "How short?"
"Too short in the bangs," she responded.
"She kept the length which I like," Mac noted indicating that the woman he usually saw had curled her hair for today. "Get changed. We have to head out to the psychiatrist."
"Gee. Just the trip I wanted to take," she sarcastically responded as she knew her window was open and he chuckled pulling her into his reach with his one arm and giving a comforting squeeze knowing she was not looking forward to this part. He and Hawkes were still dissecting her records, but Hawkes had said there was much to be discussed while Rebecca was entertaining Dr Colic. As they were driving he glanced at her and pointed to her shoulder and she glanced smirking and rolling it a bit to get the cut makeup exposed.
When they walked into the office, Mac gently set Rebecca in a seat and then looked at the secretary. "My name's Mac Taylor, I have an appointment for my daughter Rebecca Conrad-Taylor," he informed. The woman smiled and nodded at him.
"Dr Colic will be out to see you two shortly," she promised. As Mac sat with Rebecca he noticed her one leg wouldn't stop bouncing so he grabbed it and gently pressed down. He noted she honestly did not look okay with being in that office.
"It'll be fine," he whispered and she nodded knowing that she had to get through this. Mac knew he'd have to ask her about it later as the facts she dealt with psychiatrists once a year anyways and she never seemed phased got to him.
"Rebecca Conrad-Taylor," the doctor called out as Mac glanced up and he nodded at the man before standing up and then noticing Rebecca who would not get up. Mac knew what she was doing as they had discussed a few ideas of what she could pull while her room window was closed and the blinds were shut.
"Rebecca, the doctor called for you."
"Dad I just want to go home," she whined and Mac looked at her shocked at how pathetic her voice could get when she put some effort into it. She did sound like a little kid trapped within an adult's body. He pinched the bridge of his nose for show.
"Rebecca you know you are required to see a psychiatrist. I'm sorry but this has to happen before we can go home. Now either get up on your own free will or you don't get to go to the mini putt place that was built with your older brother," he warned her. She stood up and as she followed she quickly shrugged Mac's hand off her shoulder. "I'm so sorry about this Dr Colic," he apologized looking defeated.
"It's alright. Let's go inside," he answered and before Rebecca could let out a biting remark, as rehearsed, Mac slammed a hand over her mouth and firmly guided her to a chair and sat her down and crouched so he was eye level with her.
"You will not let out another biting remark. You will behave for the rest of the time we're here or I will call Don and tell him that you aren't going mini putting for a month," he warned and her eyes widened. "Yes. The entire month."
"I still don't see why I have to be here. I am completely fine with taking care of myself. Not my fault my aunt tossed me in those places after mom died! She ditched me and don't act like you won't do it again. You ditched me with my aunt the moment mom died. The minute Stella thinks I'm too much she'll make you get rid of me too," she snapped.
"Rebecca Claire!" Mac didn't expect the response but knew based on how she was tossing all the facts out at once about the story, he knew she was making it so easy for the doctor to take her on. "I'm sorry that you felt I abandoned you after your mother died. I never wanted you to feel alone. But your aunt and I agreed you living with her was safer. My job was not very safe at that time and to ensure you were safe I wanted you to stay with her. I tried to get up to her house as often as I could to see you. I never stopped loving you. Stella knows you feel like she's trying to take your mother's place but she doesn't want to do that. She's trying to love you just as much as Claire would so you don't feel alone anymore. As for the locking you up again, that's not my choice. If a doctor thinks you at any time are more of a danger to yourself I'll have no choice but to let them institutionalize you. If I could find a way to get you declared competent again I would," he warned.
Neither of the two of them noticed how Colic was looking at them. "Whatever," she muttered looking away.
"I am so sorry Dr Colic. We are ready to start but I have no idea where these outbursts are coming from," Mac answered honestly. He secretly knew Rebecca was picking low blows while in front of Colic so then he wouldn't give her up as a patient.
"It's alright. Her outburst allowed me to learn a little about the both of you," he assured calmly. He then looked to Rebecca. "From what you and your dad were talking about you like mini golf. You any good?" She shrugged and didn't look at him. "You mentioned your mother."
"She's dead. Died in 9/11," she responded calmly. Mac noticed a tear in Rebecca's eye and wondered if something about 9/11 triggered something in her mind. He never really had a chance to get to know Detective Manx except for her work side and that was intelligent and snappy, but she had a heart of gold for her team. She would stay longer so Lindsay and Danny could go home to their kids, or so Stella and him could leave early.
"Well from what your last institution and doctors sent me, I want to work with you 4 days a week. Would this time slot work for you Detective Taylor?" Mac nodded knowing it would allow him to go to work and get some stuff done but also work with Rebecca on what they were doing. He then looked to Rebecca. "I can see marks all over you. I'm taking it you used to try and kill yourself." She nodded and then looked at the one on her arm that Hawkes made that looked a bit more recent than the others. "When's the last time you tried?"
"About a month ago. Just before my case worker let me come back to live with dad," she answered quietly. She then tilted her head and chuckled hollowly. "Would have finally succeeded too if that witch hadn't found me," she chuckled.
"Detective Taylor I have a few things to discuss with you if you can stay behind for a moment," Colic began and he watched as Mac stood up as fast as Rebecca and grabbed her arm.
"I do have a moment. I called Hawkes and he's downstairs just outside the door. You can go down to see him. That's as far as you go," he warned her and she nodded going quickly not even acknowledging the psychiatrist.
"Why do all shrinks talk behind their patient's backs?" She was going to let the comment slip and Mac grabbed her arm and landed a firm swat on her bum. "OW!" He looked at her and she nodded and getting down to where Hawkes was waiting.
"So what do you do right now, when Rebecca's outbursts get out of control?" Mac knew this was a part of the psychiatrist evaluation.
"Me and Stella try just putting her into a corner, taking privileges' and the odd swat to her behind," he explained calmly. "Some days I just want to give in because I don't want her making a scene in front of the world," he answered.
"As you saw from my email, I choose more extreme measures to discipline my patients. When she gets very out of hand I want you to be willing to not just swat her, but give her a good old fashioned spanking. It'll remind her what happens," he began and Mac nodded albeit not liking it. He'd have to do it. "I do check to make sure the parents of my patients are doing what they asked so I know whether or not I should keep them as my patients.
"I understand and I assure you, that unlike her aunt, I won't give up on her. We will do what you need," he answered.
"Then I will see you Monday to Thursday at this time," he informed and Mac nodded walking down to see Hawkes and Rebecca laughing and joking around. But as he walked out, Rebecca's attitude mimicked what was back in the office.
"In the car. I have to talk to Hawkes for a moment," Mac advised. She groaned and walked over to the car and got in without a complaint. "She's in for a ride. He won't take her if I don't resort to measures such as spanking her," he informed and Hawkes's eyes widened. "Good you get the issue. I won't force it, but if we can make it only appear that way, I'd appreciate it."
"Me, Adam and Danny will look into it and let you know. When's her next session?"
"Tomorrow at the same time," he warned and Hawkes nodded going over to his car and driving off knowing he had to hurry. Meanwhile in Mac's car he looked at Rebecca who looked drained. "You did well Rebecca. He's not denied you. We're already in."
"Good," she yawned. Mac looked at her and she shrugged. "Don't feel bad about what you did. We had no choice."
