Chloé grumbled as she pulled a yellow hoodie on over her head. She had never been caught dead in a hoodie before. Pollen had suggested that she find a change of clothes so that it would be harder for Hawkmoth to hunt her down. And while Chloé agreed that she was right, she hated that it meant dressing in poor people's clothes. She at least managed to convince the bug that it was okay for her to add her signature color to the look.
Chloé was in a Carrefour, a building she had sworn she would never set foot in. But here she was, in a dressing room that looked like it carried at least three diseases looking at herself wearing black leggings with pockets and a very large yellow hoodie. She put a black baseball cap on her head and cringed as she pulled her ponytail through the back.
"This is the ugliest outfit I have ever worn," Chloé complained.
"Which is why it's perfect for evading Hawkmoth," Pollen assured. "Besides, My Queen looks good in anything." And as Chloé studied the way her butt looked in the mirror, she could kind of agree. But only kind of.
"This is ridiculous," Chloé mumbled, picking up Nino's backpack and shoving her other clothes inside with the Miracle Box. "Paris is such a big place, there's no way he'd be able to find me. It doesn't matter what I'm wearing."
"It would possibly be a trial for the holder of the Butterfly Miraculous. Alas, it would be much easier for Gabriel Agreste to find one teenaged girl," Pollen pointed out. Chloé groaned. Pollen was right. She had to remember she wasn't just dealing with a supervillain. She was also dealing with the world famous Gabriel Agreste and all of the power that came with that title.
"I can't believe Uncle Gabe is Hawkmoth. If only Auntie Emilie could see him now. She would be heartbroken."
"Imagine what is going to happen when Adrien finds out," Pollen added.
"The poor kid is going to have to send his own dad to jail. I might be mean to him, but I love my daddy. I could never imagine having to do that to him," Chloé whispered sadly.
"Well, let's cross that bridge when we get to it, My Queen," Pollen consoled. "Right now, we need to focus on getting Tikki and Plagg's holders back."
"We need a better plan," Chloé told the kwami floating by her head. "Sadly, tracking down an akuma that we don't know how to find and then winging it from there isn't the best idea. Is there anyone else that I can get to help me? Someone more like Ladybug?"
More than anything Chloé wanted someone to rely on in this situation. She was never good at coming up with ideas or plans. She always just had other people tell her where to be and what to do once she got there. Looking back, all of the good ideas she was a part of could all be credited to Marinette. Really, how did she not figure out Ladybug's identity before? Marinette even did that same weird look that she made when she was formulating a plan when she was in the suit.
"No one else knows Ladybug and Chat Noir's secret identities," Pollen answered solemnly. "Asking anyone for help could raise suspicion. We're on our own for this one."
Chloé looked at herself in the mirror. She could do this. She had to. If not, she would be running from Hawkmoth for the rest of her life and Marinette and Adrien would be gone forever. And while she could live without Marinette's snarky comments in class, she preferred a world with Ladybug and Adrien.
"Okay. So, as soon as we get out of here, we go straight to the place where Ladybug and Chat Noir were zapped away. And once we get there, we hope that the akuma left some sort of trail for us to follow, which is, you know, very unlikely."
"Pretty much," Pollen agreed.
"Great."
With a final grumble, Chloé slung the backpack over her shoulder and walked out of the dressing room. She headed straight for the registers, pulling the tags out of the clothes she was wearing so that they could be scanned easily. She waited in line quietly, not drawing attention to herself for any reason. Pollen had pointed out earlier that anyone could be working for Gabriel or an akuma in disguise. The lower she could keep her head, the better.
Every once in a while, she could hear a phone go off with a notification and people start muttering loudly. She didn't dare question it or look to investigate. She didn't need a reminder about her friend and idol having gone missing. It was finally Chloé's turn at the register and the lady scanned all of the tags that Chloé held out towards her. As she was ringing it up, she paused and looked closely at Chloé's face.
"Has anyone ever told you that you look like the mayor's daughter," the lady asked casually. Said mayor's daughter did not let her shock show on her face. Instead, she cleared her throat and played it cool.
"All the time!" Chloé tried to hide the usual lilt in her voice and talk as deep as possible.
"Yeah, it's a real shame."
Chloé felt her stomach begin to twist. The cashier typing into the machine had no idea the turmoil she was causing her customer. Chloé tried so hard to stop her voice from cracking.
"Shame?"
"You haven't heard? She's a criminal now." The cashier pointed to a nearby television that had Chloé's face all over it with the word "WANTED" smacked right below it. As the blonde looked around, she could see it on every screen and every phone. Her stomach had dropped further than she thought possible and her hands started shaking like crazy. She kept reminding herself that she needed to keep cool, she couldn't give herself away. She could feel Pollen pushing at her stomach in comfort from the front hoodie pocket.
"What...um what did she do," Chloé asked, swallowing all the spit in her mouth.
"She stole something really important from Gabriel Agreste and the owners of that bakery by Françoise Dupont. They have a huge reward out on her. It's going to be €16.47."
Chloé reached into her backpack and grabbed her card, swiping it through the machine. She waited for the usual ding that signified a purchase but it never came.
"Um, try one more time, hun. It says card declined."
Chloé swiped again, hoping that it was just a fluke. Her daddy kept all the money she ever wanted on the card, it shouldn't be declining. Unless, her father was in with Gabriel and froze her card.
"Still declined. Do you have another card?"
"Let me check," Chloé stammered. She reached into the backpack, immediately seeing if Nino had a wallet she could find a purpose for. She was sure that she was shaking very visibly now. She was panicking, trying to come up with any sort of solution that didn't end in the worst way possible. She could feel the kwami poking her stomach a lot now.
"Excuse me, is there an issue over here?"
Chloé looked up to see a security guard had come over to stand next to the cashier lady. His hands were pretty close to the taser on his belt. Chloé froze but still slowly secured the backpack on her shoulders, making sure the straps were on tight.
"N-no issues, sir." Chloé tried, hoping this would all be just a serious misunderstanding. No such luck. Apparently, just because she had Lady Luck's miraculous in her pocket didn't mean that it would rub off on her. Chloé made a mental note to remember how good of a name Lady Luck was before panicking as the guard started to call in a "10-66" on his radio. Chloé had been around Sabrina's dad enough to know that meant "suspicious person" and Chloé could not afford to get caught. She looked around to see more guards coming up.
"I'm so sorry," she told the cashier and guard before taking the baseball cap off her head. "Pollen! Buzz on!"
As the yellow light washed over her, she could see multiple guards running at her with their arms outstretched, holding all sorts of weapons. As soon as her transformation was up, Queen Bee vaulted in the air, thankful that her backpack was still securely on. She did a backflip over the guards, landing behind them. She felt someone grab her around her chest from behind and she panicked, quickly grabbing an arm and using her super strength to throw them over her shoulder.
The guards turned and ran at her again, focused on catching her. Queen Bee jumped up onto a nearby register counter and used it to launch herself into the pile of guards trying to attack her. She landed with her hands on one guard's shoulders, using her legs to swing around and kick two others. The momentum brought the guard she was perching on to the ground and her down with it. She jumped up, punching another guard in the process and using his falling body as a ramp to kick off and fly straight towards the last two guards.
Queen Bea slammed her feet into their chests, using her heels to knock them down and she wasted no time in running now that there was no one to stop her. She exited the store and used her top to swing onto the rooftops, ignoring any stares she got. She ran and swung herself faster and harder then she ever had before, pushing even her super endurance to the limits. She had to get away, but it seemed that wherever she turned there was some sort of law enforcement. She credited that to her identity being revealed to the public.
As soon as she was in the clear, she landed in an ally far from the center of Paris and called off her transformation, watching her kwami float down tiredly.
"I'm not going to be able to get anywhere. People know that I'm Queen Bee. They'll alert the police immediately."
Chloé was gulping in air as quickly as she could. She had been so scared that she would get caught. Who knows what would have happened if they had managed to take her down and drag her to Gabriel. To Hawkmoth.
"What if we make a new Queen Bee," Pollen exclaimed, the idea suddenly popping into her head.
"You've lost me, Bug."
"The Miraculous makes a suit out of the holder's innermost desires. That's why not every incarnation of the same superhero looks the same. You seriously think they were wearing spandex back in Ancient China?"
"Okay, point taken," Chloé shot back as she peered around the ally corner to make sure no one was coming.
"So, if your desires change, then so does the suit. Ladybug and Chat Noir probably won't look the same in a few years. Their suits will mature as they do. If we can change your superhero suit and give you a new name publicly, coupled with the magic of the Miraculous, the people of Paris won't know that you're the same Queen Bee."
"What about Hawkmoth," Queen Bee asked. Pollen thought for a second.
"He'll probably be able to tell," she muttered dejectedly. Then a thought hit her. "But...he can't tell anyone that it's you because how would Gabriel Agreste know?"
"That's brilliant, Bug! There's just one issue! How in the heck do I change my desires or whatever?"
"I guess we just attempt it when you re-transform, My Queen."
"Do you think you can do it, Pollen?"
"Well I can certainly try, My Queen. But I would need sustenance first."
Chloé handed Pollen the last bit of croissant they had. She would need to find something else before too long, especially if she needed to transform again. While Pollen was eating, Chloé turned to look at their surroundings. They were in the Vider District right where the akuma had last been seen. Chloé walked up to a particular spot of grey in the concrete.
"What is it," Pollen asked.
"This was the spot where Marinette got zapped. She was right here when she...when she disappeared."
Pollen looked down at the spot, trying to stop images of Marinette writhing in pain or disappearing suddenly. She shook her head to clear all thoughts, trying not to let her worry for her good friend and guardian distract her.
"And right here...this was where Chat Noir disappeared," Chloé told the bee kwami as she stepped further away to another grey spot.
"Plagg..." Pollen mumbled with worry. She personally had never had a holder disappear completely while wearing a Miraculous, but Plagg had. Countless times. He had described it to her once or twice and it wasn't at all pleasant. He often brushed it off but she could tell that he was scared of it, even now. Kwamis didn't die, but when a Miraculous was wiped from existence completely, it's kwami went with it.
Pollen felt very bitter about the fact that the lives of her guardian and her fellow kwami were completely reliant on one evil man's need for a piece of jewelry. She could only imagine how Tikki would be feeling. Plagg was her other half and Marinette was her best friend. Pollen tried to shake the feelings of sadness growing within her.
"It's okay, Bug. We'll get them back," Chloé said, sensing Pollen's distress. "We have their lives on the line. Not to mention my reputation. We'll get them back and clear my name. I promise."
Pollen smiled softly, seeing everything in Chloé that she had when they first met. The Bee Kwami often chewed all of the other kwamis' ears off about how much she loved her new holder but they never really listened. They all only saw what Marinette and Tikki saw, they didn't know her, not like Pollen did. But it was at moments like this when all of her good traits came shining through.
"We will, My Queen," Pollen encouraged.
"The only question is, how do we find an akuma that has seemingly gone missing," Chloé pondered, raising a thinking hand to her chin.
"I might have an idea, My Queen."
