KABOOOM!
Amy gasped as she woke up. The storm over New York was still there. Sighing, she rubbed her eyes and looked at the time 3:05AM. She groaned and lay back down. She of course had been trouble sleeping for a while, since Jake had been injured. She could still hear the crack of the punch. The perp was in jail, but that still didn't make things any better. She missed Jake, missed his laughter, his touch...
Getting up and going to fetch a glass of water, she looked out the window. The streets were empty and quiet, with the exception of a cat stalking in the darkness. It paused and looked at her, before it vanished into the shadows. Alone once more. She stayed awake for the rest of the night.
The following morning however, she and the rest of the squad got a surprise. Amy looked up as the elevator door opened and gasped. "Jake..?" He words made everyone freeze as they looked over. There was Jake being pushed by Sharon, who had become his head nurse. Jake gave an excited cry as the whole room burst into cheers and applause. Amy ran over.
"Aah... Aaah... Amyyy!" Jake groaned out, rocking back and fourth.
Amy stopped and let the tears flow from her face, before kissing Jake on the cheek. Everyone else gave Jake a hug, who enjoyed it immensely. Holt came out of his office. "Ah, hello Sharon, Jake, it's wonderful to both see you here. Has the hospital allowed the visit?"
Sharon nodded. "Yes, physically his body is healed, now it is just the case of getting the inner clocks working again, but here we are. We are on our way to the park, aren't we Jake?"
Jake turned his head to her, his body moving like one of those nodding dog toys as he did so. "Da.. a.. d.. duc.. duckssh!"
Holt smiled and looked at Sharon. "This is wonderful progress. Please, come into my office so we can talk more and the rest of the squad can watch Jake."
Sharon nodded and ruffled Jake's hair, before following Holt. The squad all moved closer to Jake. Jake looked at them all and gave a high pitched cry, clearly in his element. Charles and Terry who both had kids instantly coddled on him- nearly everyone did. Jake spotted his old desk and gave a cry, pointing at it.
Terry moved around the back and pushed the chair over. "There you are Jake, back at the nine nine eh?" Jake looked at him, drooling onto his bib, his whole body moving, it was like he couldn't control it, but it didn't seem to bother him, plus he was strapped into the chair. He looked at Amy and took her hand "Aa.. aii.. ehh.. amy!" Amy laughed and smiled at him.
"Jake."
In the office, Holt and Sharon talked. "Jake seems to be getting better everyday."
"He has had a few set backs and more surgeries in four months than most people have in their life, but he doesn't let it stop him. He's a fighter I can tell you that."
Holt chuckled. "That, I am aware of." He watched Jake through the blinds and frowned a bit. "Why does his body move so much?" Sharon looked over and smiled as Terry tickled Jake. "Aside from being tickled? The doctors think it's his brain trying to.. recalibrate his movements, sort of like a reset."
Holt nodded. "And he's talking again now."
"A few words, though he can usually get what he wants by simply putting on the puppy dog eyes, he has everyone wrapped around his finger, but we don't mind. Everyday he does different lessons...Basically, he has forgotten everything apart from faces he now knows and has to learn it from scratch."
"Everything?" Holt questioned. Sharon nodded.
"Yes, walking, eating, speaking, toilet training. He's not like a baby, that is where most people have a misinformation. Jake can understand us, he just can't.. do things like he used to, but I don't mind."
Holt nodded and stood when Sharon did. "Well, we all thank you for your care." Sharon smiled and left the office with him. Jake spotted and waved at her, Sharon smiled. "Alright mister, we ready for the park?" Jake rocked back and fourth and looked at the squad. "du.. du.. DUH.. Ducckssh!"
Holt smiled and looked at Terry. "Sergeant Jeffords, why don't you spend it with them?" Terry looked over and nodded. "Thank you sir." Amy smiled and kissed Jake's cheek. Jake looked at her. "Am.. amyy..." Amy smiled.
"I'll see you real soon babe."
A few minutes later, Jake left with Sharon and Terry. His visit had cheered up the squad, knowing there was hope for Jake.
After walking for a bit, they made it to the park not too far away and stopped by the pond. Jake was silent as he watched the ducks as Sharon and Terry talked.
"My wife is called Sharon as well."
"Really? Do you have kids?"
"Two at the moment, twin baby girls."
Sharon nodded. "I can't have kids myself, but I like to think of Jake and the other people I care for as my own. I would do anything for them." Terry nodded. "I know, the 99 is part of my family." He watched Jake, who was staring down a duck and smiled. "He seems happy."
Sharon looked. "He is, most of the time. He still gets frustrated, but it is going to take time . We've made it this far in four months, we can keep going." Terry nodded and got up, walking over to Jake. "Hey buddy."
Jake whined as the duck moved away and looked at Terry, then smiled. Terry knelt next to his chair. "Ducks huh? You know, one time, I remember we were on a case and we got chased by some ducks, never seen you move so fast." Jake watched him and then laughed. "D-duck duck!"
Terry laughed and looked at him. Yeah, he knew everything would be alright.
