Days passed and now he found himself in a little, somewhat sick, routine. Sleep was no longer an option for him, he realized that the third night when the dream had awfully morphed into a vision of the future he desperately wanted but knew he would never have. Now he was mostly scared to close his eyes and see the things that he thought he had let go of long ago. But what is a half youkai to do in the middle of the night in a crowed city, full of scents and mostly stenches that hurt his sensitive nose? Well, Inuyasha had found out the answer to that rather quickly…

He had devoted himself to watch over her while she slept.

He had been pleased to know that she still had the same room in the second floor of the old shrine house, and even more please to discover that the tree that had been so young back then had now a sturdy trunk and strong branches to support his weight and plenty of foliage to cover up his frame.

But what had come to an even bigger surprise to him was that he had been able to enter her family's land at all, he had thought that after the incident where his father had almost destroyed the shrine to pieces asking for an explanation to his wounded stated they would put up any sort of barrier to forbid them entrance to their territory. That thought was what brought him up there, to start with, what was the harm in trying even when the answer was already no? He could go and had his hopes shattered and then he would be able to move on with his life.

But there wasn't any barrier, he had been able to enter and climb up the tree and look through her window until he found her sleeping form. From his perch on the tree he was down win and even if there was a slim chance that some of her scent would escape from any crack on the window or if it would be wide open he wouldn't be able to pick up on it. That was a bad and a good thing at the same time.

Bad because he desperately longed for her warm sweet scent to fill his lungs, warm his heart, erase his pain, and lift his burdens… but good because he was sure that after that brief moment the pain would come back with vengeance once he had to force himself to leave her again. So he force himself to be happy with just seeing her, even if he could not make up her face clearly because of the dark and the distance. He would have to be content with the fact that she was safe and sound under his watchful eye.
