After Steve had left Gem lay a while thinking over how close they had become over the last couple of weeks. She trusted him. As six o'clock came round Gem began to get ready. She had made her decision; she just hoped he would still see her for who she was. She knew she had to tell Steve who she was, if she was gonna have something with him, then he deserved to know the truth. 7 came and went, Steve never showed. Gem was looking out of the window, when she felt the dart hit her in the back of the neck, she was out cold before she could do anything about it.
Gem came round in what looked like a cell. She shook herself awake. Her eyes were a little blurry, but she could make out the shape of someone crouching in front of her.
"Finally, you're awake." The stranger said,
"Where am I?"
"We're keeping you safe."
"Safe? Safe from what?" She murmured.
"The Cap has turned against S.H.I.E.L.D."
"Why would he do that?" She shook her head disbelieving and trying to clear the last of the effects of the drug. "And why would I need to be locked up to be safe."
It was then she heard footsteps. Rumlow appeared from out of the shadowy corner.
"For a goddess, you were easy to capture."
"Not a fair fight when you're shot from behind." She growled as she tried to stand.
"He's gonna be looking for you."
"Where is he?"
"He's on the run. He's now a wanted man."
Gem slammed her hands against the glass. Rumlow laughed.
"Carry on little princess, you're not getting out of there anytime soon."
"You'll regret this."
Gem did not know how long she was down there. Was it just hours or days or worse weeks? She had no way of telling. She had tried all her magic several times trying to get out, but nothing worked. She felt helpless, something she had not felt in a very long time.
Time past and then out of nowhere there came a flurry of activity, the echoes of people screaming, and shouting travelled down the halls to her cell. Gem smiled as her friend came into view.
"You're late."
"Sorry, I got held up." Replied Natasha with a smirk seeing that Gem's time here had not affected her sense of humour.
Once Natasha had let her out Gem hugged her. "Where's Steve?"
"He is looking for someone."
"Oh."
Natasha looked at her face, she was clearly missing him. "Don't panic, he will be seeing you soon. For now, I have to take you to our new home."
"New home? What have I missed?" Just how long have I been gone? She wondered as she fell in line with the quick pace Nat set.
"I'll fill you in on the way."
Natasha drove her for what seemed like a lifetime. She filled Gem in on everything on the drive, Hydra, S.H.I.E.L.D, Fury, Bucky. When they finally arrived at their new base, Gem was exhausted. Inside Nat introduces her to Tony Stark.
"Aww the Asgardian."
"The Iron man." Gem replied in the same sarcastic tone.
"I like her." Tony said, smirking.
Gem was shown to her new room. Everything in it was new. It was then she noticed the letter on the nightstand.
"Dear Gem,
I am sorry I cannot be there to help you settle into our new home. But I must see if I can find Bucky or at least know he is safe.
I am also sorry I missed our date. I will make it up to you when I get back. Tony has promised to look after you.
I will be back and when I am, I will take you on that date.
Keep training, Natasha is a good person and she will always help you. See you soon
All my love
Steve x"
Gem put the letter in the nightstand. Well at least she left her a letter, but as for their date. That was a different matter. Of course, she still wanted to go on a date with him, but she wasn't going to hold her breath as things just kept seeming to get in the way.
Steve arrived at Gem's room not long after ten. He knocked; he was nervous about seeing her.
Gem heard the knocking, she wrapped a towel round her, she was just getting out of the shower. She opened the door, thinking it would be Natasha, but instead there stood Steve with a very red and very shocked face.
"Hey." She said a little shyly.
"Hey." Steve stuttered. "I can come back later...I just thought I'd let you know I was back."
"No!" She reached for his arm. "I mean no it's fine, come in I'm glad you're back." Gem stepped aside and allowed him in. "Sorry, by the way, I thought you were gonna be Natasha. Let me get dressed."
Gem turned, but Steve grabbed her arm and turned her back towards him, he was going to wait, but it had been too long since he last saw her, so he kissed her. What he had not expected was for her to not only kiss him back, but also to run the tips of her fingers under his grey t-shirt pulling and pushing it at the same time until she managed to get it pulled over his head. Steve picked her up and sat down with her in his lap. He wasn't used to going this quickly and just as Steve was about to undo her towel Gem stopped him. Clearly neither was she.
"Too fast? I'm sorry." He asked, feeling a little ashamed of himself.
Gem put her hand on his face. "It's not that at all. It's just, before we do this, any of this. I have to tell you who I am." Her face suddenly took on a serious look.
"I know who you are." Steve stated.
"You know what I've told you. I need to tell you who I truly am." Gem got up, she slipped into shorts and a t-shirt. Steve took this as a signal that whatever had been happening between them was most definitely on pause and so pulled his t-shirt back on.
"I want you to listen, just listen. I will tell you everything. Then answer any questions you may have."
Steve nodded at her.
"I'm not just any Asgardian. I am the Granddaughter of Odin. I am niece to Thor and daughter of Loki."
Steve raised an eyebrow.
"I left Asgard after Loki's betrayal. I wanted to start again. My grandfather granted me a gift. I asked him to erase any memory of me from Asgard, the only people to remember who I was, were him and Frigga, my grandmother. Thor and Loki have no idea who I am. I came here and started to live a new life."
Steve stood up, Gem thought he was going to leave, he paced for a few minutes, then sat down opposite her again.
"Why here? Why did you choose to live here?"
"I had always loved earth. I used to get Heimdall to show me the people here. You were all so free to choose, to love who you want, to be who you wanted to be."
"And you can't be free on Asgard?" He asked, not knowing anything about the place than what Thor had told him and that wasn't much.
"You can. But I felt that with my parentage, I was always going to be judged. My grandparents love me very much, they understood that I needed to be allowed to live a life, without my father's shadow hanging over me."
"I can understand that. But why hide it from me, from Natasha."
Gem looked at him, this is what Frigga had warned her about. She was falling for him, and now she was having to explain. It was harder than she thought, and he looked so hurt. Gem reached for his hand.
"I never thought I would feel this way about anyone. I thought I could live among you all and never have to reveal who I truly was."
Steve looked at her face, she had a single tear rolling down her cheek. He knelt in front of her, he wiped the tear away.
"Do you hate me, Steve?" Gem asked both desperate for his answer, but also dreading it in case the answer was yes. Though how could she blame him.
"No, I don't think I could ever hate you."
"But my father…."
"… doesn't define who you are. I've watched you, you train, you work hard, you are a good person."
Gem woke the following day with the sun in her eyes and a warm feeling surrounding her, Steve had stayed with her asking her to tell him about her life on Asgard. He had a great deal of questions and in the end, they had fallen asleep together on the small bed. Gem was laid on his chest for a short while she listened to the steady beating of his heart before deciding it would be best if she got up. when she did finally make her move to get up, Steve wrapped his arms round her.
"Morning." He said groggily.
"Morning." Gem smiled.
Steve slowly let go of her and began to stretch his arms. After a few moments he gave a frustrated sigh. "Everything okay?"
"I have a meeting with Stark."
"Anything interesting?"
"Actually, we're going after Loki's staff. We finally have a location for it."
Gem sat up at this. "Do you want me to come with you?"
"No, your uncle is joining us." He sat up.
"Thor is coming here." Gem didn't know how to feel it had been a long time she had seen her uncle.
"He's already here." Steve watched as Gem pushed herself up and out of bed and started to pace. After a little while he took hold of her. "He knows we have an Asgardian here."
"I haven't seen him in so long."
"Do you want to see him?"
"So much but not at all, all at the same time." She bit her lip and looked down not knowing what to do. Would she be able to stop her mouth running away from her? She loved him so much, but if she were to utter that word in his presence it could unravel all her grandmother and grandfather had done for her.
Steve could see just how scared, how worried she was and so badly wanted to take that away. He placed his finger under her chin pushing upwards until she looked at him and then with a smile Steve kissed her.
"I would stay longer but, I better get going, whatever you decide to do I'm here for you."
"Thank you." Steve left and Gem collapsed back on the bed. Could she really go see Thor, he would ask questions, could she answer them?
…Chapter three end…...
