"Kyo!" Cheerful as ever. "Did you sleep okay? I made breakfast, I hope you're hungry."
Even though he feels utterly exhausted and his bones feel heavy and leaden, he still smiles ever so slightly when he sees her. "Yeah. I slept fine. Not very hungry though, I'll eat later."
"Is the kitty getting bested by a little rain?" Shigure mocks merrily from behind a newspaper.
Outside the rain hammers against the window. And it's true, Kyo can feel the ache deep in his bones, but like hell is he going to tell Shigure that. "Just shut up," is all of a comeback he can muster at the moment.
"If there's something you'd rather eat I'd be happy to make it for you," says Tohru, "You really should eat something before school."
"I said later," Kyo says bluntly.
"Don't waste your courtesy on him, Ms. Honda, " Yuki says cooly, finishing the last of his own breakfast. "It's best to just let him sulk when he's like this."
Kyo scowls, "I'm not sulking, you damed rat!" He stops when he notices Tohru wince at the sound of his raised voice. He rubs the back of his head awkwardly and seats himself at the table. Head down he says, "Fine, I'll have some. Happy?"
Tohru jumps to her feet gleefully and grabs him a serving.
Kyo manages a couple bites but his stomach is uneasy. The dream still weighing heavily on his mind. He pushes his food around absently. "So what were you two so excited about this morning anyway?"
"Huh? Oh!" Tohru lights up, "Yuki and I were just discussing details for the banner our class is making for the graduation ceremony! I've been put in charge of paint, so I'm trying to decide on the best colors to—" a sudden look of dread falls over he face, and she goes pale, shrinking back into her shoulders shamefully. "But we don't have to talk about that now. Is—is the food good?"
Kyo feels a twist in his gut. Graduation was just over two weeks away. Two weeks. That's all he had. Akito assured him; graduation day and not a minute more. It feels surreal. He would start the day surrounded by classmates giddy with excitement for the possibilities of the futures ahead of them, and he would end the day locked behind closed doors, alone until the day he died. His palms feel clammy and he lowers his head. He pushes his dish away and rises from the table. "I'm gonna get ready for school."
"O—okay," Tohru goes to clear the remains of everyone's breakfast, gathering the dishes in her arms then moving over towards the sink to get them washed. When she turns her sock snags a rough spot on the floor and she yelps, tripping and falling forward suddenly. Dishes shatter and rain down in shards around her.
"Ms. Honda!"
"Tohru!"
Tohru sits up shakily, apologizing manically, "I'm so sorry, I'll clean all of this up, so clumsy of me, I'm so so so sorry!"
"Ms. Honda, you're bleeding!" Yuki gasps.
Tohru looks down at her arm to see a long jagged cut running from her elbow across her forearm and she shrieks. The cut looks deep, blood already creeping down her hand and staining her skirt.
"I'll get a towel," Yuki says hurriedly.
"Yes, you should keep pressure on it," says Shigure getting to his feet. "I'll call Hatori."
Tohru can only stare dumbfounded as the boys shuffle about around her frantically. It's in the chaos that Kyo kneels beside her and grabs her injured arm, holding it up in his hand. "You need to keep it elevated," he says, "It will help stop—" That's when it happens. Light, blinding and pure shoots out from his hands, causing everyone in the room to shield their eyes. When it subsides, Tohru gasps.
"My arm…it's…"
Yuki has come over with a towel, but he drops it to his side when he sees. "It's healed," he says breathlessly.
"Well I'll be damned…" says Shigure.
"Kyo how did you…" But Tohru doesn't finish her sentence. Kyo blinks at her, confused by the expression of horror that spreads over her face. He puts a hand up to his pounding head just as the droplets of blood from his nose speckle the floor beneath him. Tohru's mouth is moving but Kyo can't hear what she's saying to him. The image of her doubles and swims in and out of focus. Blearily, he sees her reach out to him, then he sags sideways and sees nothing at all.
